궁금허요-잉: 동네 이야기

담양이 고향인 누군가의 어린시절 이야기를 전해들었다: 친구와 해가 지고 달이 뜨도록 신나게 놀고 집에 가는 길, 달빛에 드리워진 거대한 대밭 그림자, 살랑바람이 부추기자 쏴아-아-아-아-아- 달려들었다고, 너무나 무서워 콩닥이는 가슴을 안고 냅다 뛰어서 집에 갔었다고. 단편 동화의 한 장면 같은 추억이다. ‘대가 있는 곳마다 마을이 있고, 마을이 있는 곳마다 대가 있었다’는 담양은 1973년 개발제한구역으로 지정되어 옛 모습을 꽤 많이 간직하고 있었음에도 최근 여러 변화의 바람으로 그 풍광이 조금씩, 하지만 빠른 속도로 변하고 있다. 처음에는 죽물시장이 대나무박물관이 된 것을 보곤 조금이나마 체감하는 것 같았지만 담양에서 머무는 몇 개월 사이에 눈 앞에서 수시로 변하는 풍경을 보았다. 계절이 바뀌었고, 오가는 사람들이 달라졌으며, 없던 건물이 생겨났다. 눈 앞의 광경은 진행형 ~ing 인데 생활하며 주민들로 부터 알게 된 이곳, 담양 향교리는 기억 조각들의 집합이었다. 변해온 과정 하나하나를 기억하는 주민들이 보는 동네는 어떤 모습일까. 나지막이 “죽물시장, 좋았제” 하는 어르신들 옆에 앉아 듣는 담양의 옛 풍경은 너무나도 궁금한 것이었다. 이젠 그 모습을 볼 수 없으니 그저 상상해 볼 수 밖에. “궁금허요-잉.” 정말로 궁금해서 이야기해달라 청했다. 대밭, 관방제림, 죽물시장, 관방천, 죽녹원, 향교에 대해 물었고 어르신들은 언제나 더 풍성한 이야깃 거리로 화답하여 주었다. 역사책에 차마 담기지 않을 당신들의 소소한 삶의 이야기를 입가에 옅은 미소를 띄우며, 또는 먼 선을 바라보며, 가끔은 언성을 높이며, 타지에서 온 손녀 뻘에게 전해주곤 하였다. 눈 앞 주차공간이 대밭이 되고, 두 발로 서 있는 포장도로가 빗물이 흐르던 깊은 도랑이 되었다... ‘옛날 모습’은 관계의 본질을 보여준다고 생각한다. 사람과 사람, 사람과 자연, 자연과 자연. 그들의 삶, 역사, 그리고 나의 삶. 그 본질과 마주했을 때 비로소 나의 모습을 반추해 볼 수 있게 된다. 아침에 눈을 떠서 마주치는 모든 것들이 그 ‘옛날 모습’에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 그 모습을 살았던 이들과 동시대를 향유한다는 것은 시야의 풍경이 정적인 것이 아니라 항상 변하는 중임을, 그렇기에 매 순간, 모든 모습이 지나온 시간 위에 실재한다는 것을 생각하게 했다.

Wonder-ing: Damyang Story

I heard from someone recalling his childhood in Damyang: On the way home, after playing with friends until after dusk, the huge shadow of bamboo field sprung at him with a hair-raising sound as a breeze encouraged it. Scared out of his mind, he ran for his life home.

Damyang scenery used to be described as ‘villages being where the bamboos are; bamboos being where the villages are.’ Although Damyang kept its vista for a long time since the designation of limited development district in 1973, the landscape recently has been going through changes slowly but surely.

The changes seemed fairly dramatic at first to see how the Bamboo Market turned into Bamboo Museum, however; the contemporary changes in the landscape were witnessed during the 3-month stay. While the scenery is constantly in progressive changes (-ing), the place, Hyanggyo-ri of Damyang is an assembly of memories.

How would the village look like in the eyes of residents, who remember the changes the place went through? As the elderly residents uttered, “The Bamboo Market used to be great”, I could not help but wonder the scenery of Damyang in the past. With no visible remains, I could only follow the traces from stories.

“Wonder-ing”. I sincerely wondered how it used to be like.

About bamboo fields, Bamboo Market, Gwanbang stream, Juknokwon (Bamboo Garden), Hyanggyo (Confucian temple) and more, the elderlies had so much to share. They told their trivial life stories to me, who is like their grandchild, sometimes with faint smiles; sometimes staring at a distant mountain; sometimes in rough voices. While listening, the parking lot would revive into bamboo fields and the paved road would turn into deep gutters for rain to run down.

I believe the ‘scenes from past’ show the essential relationships: human to human; human to nature; nature to nature; their lives; history; my life. Only when such essence was faced, I could reflect myself at last.

Everything encountered in a daily life has its root in the ‘scenes from past’.

To savor the coevality with the ones who lived in such scenes from the past is to remind that the landscape in sight is never still, and that every moment and every spectacle exist on the passed time.

“옛날에 짓기 전에는 거이가

“400년 된 나무들.

“사람이 팔도에서 다 모였다

대밭이었어, 쩌런 대밭.”

우리 쬐까맸을 때나, 그 때나, 지금이나, 여 똑같어. 더 커졌을라나.”

그 말이제. 부산, 마산, 뭐 춘천, 서울 할 것 없이 장사들이 와서 사가서 팔기도 허고. 죽물전에 없는 거 읎어. 생활용품이 거이가 있어.”

Before the buildings, all were bamboo

Some 400 year-old trees.

Everyone came from all over the

fields. Like that one.

They have been the same,

country. Busan, Masan, ChunCheon,

even from when we were little.

Maybe they got more big... maybe.

Seoul...

Buyers came to buy, sellers came to sell.

You could find everything there, almost all the household things.

“참 좋았어, 여그 물이 맭아갖고.

“죽녹원이기 전에 그냥 산이야.

“전통 있는 향교제.

여가 시방 대사리도 겁났어!”

대밭도 있고 상수리나무도 있고.

인자는 제사만 지내고.

전에는 상수리였는데 인자는

엣날에는 한문 같은 걸 갈치기는

대밭이 되아부렀어.

했어.

요래가 다 도토리 산이었어.”

It used to be so nice, the water so clear.

It was just a small mountain,

It’s a time-honoured hyanggyo.

We could catch so many marsh snails!

before becoming Juknokwon.

Now it’s only used for ancestral

There used to be more oak trees

그 때는 대밭이었어 기어들어가고 기어나오고.

It was all bamboo field here.

We had to crawl in and crawl out.

지금의 대담미술관과 향교식당, 차들이 주차되어 있는 곳도 대밭이었다 한다.

Where Art Center Daedam, Hyanggyo Restaurant, and parked cars are used to be all bamboo fields. Densely packed with bamboos, people had to crawl in and out.

도랑이 있어야 비오면 물이 이리로 내려오지. 나 시집 왔을 때는 길도 요만해서, 기우뚱 기우뚱 올라가면, 아이구…

Water came down through the gutter here.

When I came to this village after marriage, the path was so narrow.

Walking along swaying left and right...

예전엔 좁은 길 옆으로 깊은 도랑이 있어, 가끔씩 빠지는 사고도 있었다고 한다.

The paths in the village used to be very narrow and had deep gutters on the side. Some people had accidents of falling into the gutter.

우리 어렸을 때는, 여기 비가 많이 오면, 물이 여기까지 넘실넘실 넘실 했어. 그러면 담양읍은 전부 물바다가 되었어.

When we were young, whenever we had a heavy rain, the water level rose upto here, swelling.

The whole Damyang became flooded.

댐이 생겨나기 전, 폭우가 올 때면 관방천이 쉬이 불어나서 수위가 지금의 도로까지 올라왔다고 한다.

Before the construction of dams, the water level used to rise up to where the roads are now and the whole Damyang was flooded by heavy rain.

물이 얼마나 깨끗했는데. 잉어, 메기, 자라, 장어… 짱어라고 하지.

The water used to be so clear.

There were Carp, catfish, terrapin, and eel... We say Éel.

예전엔 관방천에 더 크고 다양한 생물들이 살았다 한다. 광주에서 잡으러 오는 사람들까지 있었을 정도로 ‘대사리’라 불리는 다슬기가 많아서 쉽게 잡아서 먹곤 했다는데 이제는 그 모습을 찾아 볼 수가 없다.

More variety of fish used to live in Gwanbang Stream. The stream used to be full marsh snails, but they are nowhere to be seen now.

돌다리, 작년엔가 놓았어. 그 전엔 저기 뛰엄다리, 거기로 다녔지.

The stone bridge was installed last year.

Before that, we used the stepping-stones there.

주민들과 방문객들이 관방천을 건널 때 많이 애용하는 사각 돌다리가 불과 1년 밖에 안 된 것이라 한다.

The rectangular stepping-stone bridge people use now to cross Gwanbang Stream is only a year old. Before that, everyone had to go around and cross the old stepping-stones or the bridges further away.

옛날에는 더 많았어. 집에서 키우는 것을 내보내면, 저녁되면 훈련이 되어서 자기 집 찾아 가.

There used to be more.

They were sent out from the houses.

When the sun goes down, they would find their way home.

예전엔 관방천에 많은 수의 집오리가 무리 지어 모습을 보였다 한다.

More flocks of tame ducks could be seen at Gwanbang Stream back in the day.

옛날에는 냇가에서 채소도 씻고 빨래도 하고 다 했어. 우리 시집와서는 다 했어.

Back in the days, we washed vegitables and did laundry with the water here.

We all did it when we got married and came here.

예전의 관방천은 더 넓었다 한다. 지금의 나무 계단이 있는 곳 까지가 물가였고 돌계단이 있었다고 한다.

Gwanbang Stream used to be wider: the water reached where the wooden stairs are now.

저녁 먹으면 부인들이 막 목욕가자 해서 다 모여서 남자들은 저 밑에서 하고 여자들은 여기 위에서 하고.

After supper, the ladies would call everyone out for bath.

Everyone gathered, men would wash down there; women would wash up here.

예전의 관방천은 더 넓었다 한다. 지금의 나무 계단이 있는 곳 까지가 물가였고 돌계단이 있었다고 한다.

Gwanbang Stream used to be wider: the water reached where the wooden stairs are now.

예전에는 이런 것 없었어. 가마니 하나 딱 놓고, 놀고, 부채질하고…

We didn’t have anything like this before.

We would just sit on empty straw bags, play and fan ourselves...

관방제림에는 여러개의 벤치와 평상, 정자가 설치되어져 있는데, 예전에는 그런 것 하나 없이 나무 그늘 아래 쌀가마니 피고 앉아 더위를 식혔다고 한다.

There are quite a number of benches and places to sit now. But back in the days, there were no such things and people would just sit on straw bags in tree shades to cool down in summer at Gwanbangjerim Forest Park.

대나무로 울타리 만들어서, 이렇게 이렇게 묶어서 담양읍 주변을 막았어.

We would make bamboo fences by tying like this, and enclose Damyang area.

담양읍 전체를 둘러 높은 대나무 울타리를 성곽처럼 세웠었다고 한다.

There used to be tall bamboo fences installed around Damyang area like a fortress.

‘난장 턴다’고 해서 저기서 씨름판 벌리면 사방에서 장사들이 모여서 씨름했지.

When a bout of wrestling happens, every strong man would come around and wrestle.

담양교 밑에서 큰 씨름판이 매년 축제처럼 벌어졌다고 한다. 또한 ‘상하’라는 놀음판도 벌어져 항상 북적였다고 한다.

Korean wrestling, Ssireum festival used to be held every year under Damyang Bridge. Also, a gambling game called ‘Sangha’ gathered people around at the same time.

여기 고목이 된 것은 조선시대에 심겨진 나무고 저기 이만한 것은, 한 삼십년 전에 심겨졌는데 다 저렇게 컸어. 제 2의, 그러니까 신관방제림을 심은 거지.

The big old trees here were planted in Joseon dynesty.

The ones smaller there were planted about thirty years ago.

They’ve grown.

It’s like Gwanbangjerim Jr.

만성교에서 담양교 쪽으로 가는 길에 심겨진 계목나무(느티나무) 길이 꼭 관방제림의 푸조나무 길을 연상시키는 데에는 이유가 있었다. 신계우 전군수님이 삼십여년 전에 관방제림을 염두에 두고 조성했다 한다.

On the way from Manseong Bridge to Damyang Bridge, there is a path with rows of Elm-like Trees, a smaller version of Gwanbangjerim forest park.

Ex-governor Shin Gye Woo planted them some 30 years ago.

여기 말고 저기 있었어, 정자가.

Not here, the pavilion used to be there.

담양에는 유명한 정자도 많지만 마을 곳곳에 주민들의 쉼터이자 만남의 장소로 쓰이는 ‘모정’들이 있다. 향교리의 정자는 나무계단의 조성과 함께 위치가 바뀌었다.

Mojeong/Jeongja (pavilion) is a place for resting and meeting for the residents. The location of Hyanggyo-ri jeongja changed with the installation of the wooden stairs.

광주에서 남원까지. 지금은 없어. 저 산, 남산인데 철도가 저 산을 끼고 돌아갔지.

From Gwangju to Namwon.

It’s no longer here now.

The train track went around that mountain, Mt. Nam.

담양과 광주를 오가고 순창을 거쳐 남원까지 가는 기차가 있었다는데 일제강점기 이후 해방기에 없어졌다 한다.

There used to be trains running between Damynag and Gwangju, which reached Namwon through Sunchang. The train track was removed at the time of independence from Japanese occupation.

죽녹원이기 전에 그냥 산이었어. 전에는 상수리나무가 많았는데 이제는 대나무 밭이 되었지. 여기가 다 도토리 산이었어.

It was just a small mountain before becoming Juknokwon.

There used to be more oak trees than bamboos.

It was an acorn mountain.

죽녹원이 된 성인산에는 대나무보다 상수리나무가 많았던 적이 있었다 한다.

Before Juknokwon, there used to be more oak trees than bamboos at Mt. Seongin.

저기 차 있는데 까지 쭈욱 저기까지 죽물시장이었어. 말도 못했지 말도 못 해.

To where the car is parked there, the Bamboo Market was full of items and people.

There is not a word to describe it.

Undescribable.

광방천을 따라 5일 마다 세워졌던 ‘담양장’은 죽세공품의 생산지이자 유통장으로 전국 팔도에서 온 사람들로 북적였고, 새벽 4시부터 자정이 넘어서까지 활발한 죽공품 매매가 이루어 졌다. ‘죽물전’은 80년대경 사라졌고 나이드신 주민들의 기억과 대나무박물관에 그 흔적이 남아 있다.

The Damyang Bamboo Market took place along Gwanbang stream every 5 days, and was very crowded with people all over the country to buy and sell bamboo articles.

From 4 AM to after midnight, brisk trades were carried on.

The Bamboo Market disappeared in the 80s and its glory remains in elderly memories and the Bamboo Museum.

암. 죽세용품을 이고 지고… 죽물시장 볼 만 했어. 그 안에서 누구 찾으려면 한 시간 걸렸지.

Carrying bamboo goods on heads and backs...

There were so much to see at the Bamboo Market.

If you looked for someone there, it took one hour to find the person.

관방천을 따라 5일 마다 세워졌던 ‘담양장’은 해가 뜨기 무섭게 담양의 크고 작은 면에 서 밤 새어 만든 죽세공품을 잔뜩 이고 지고 오는 사람들의 행렬로 시작되었다 한다. 전국 팔도에서 몰려든 사람으로 항상 심히 북적였다고 한다.

The Damyang Bamboo Market opened along Gwanbang Stream with the march of merchants carrying loads of bamboo goods made over night from the little villages around Damyang. It was very crowded with the people from all over the country.

그 때는 냇물가 따라서 국수장사를 했지. 죽물시장이 사라진 후부터 방천 위로 올라가서 국수장사를 하지.

Noodles were sold along the stream then.

When the Bamboo Market disappeared, the noodles shops moved up to the embankment.

죽물시장에는 새벽부터 물건 팔러 나온 상인들과 열심히 흥정하는 구매자들의 허기진 배를 달래 줄 국수 천막들이 있었다. 이제는 담양의 명소가 되어 관광객들이 많이 찾는 국수거리의 ‘진우네 국수’는 오래 전 죽물시장에서도 사람들이 많이 찾던 곳이라 한다.

At the Bamboo Market, there were not only bamboo goods, but also noodles to appease the hunger of the mercahants and buyers. Noodle Street, one of the tourist attraction of Damyang now, originated from the noodle tents at the market along the stream.

아 그렇지. 냉장고 같았지, 여름에는 시원하고. 겨울에는 따뜻하고 김이 났지, 뭉게뭉게.

Right.

It was like a refrigerator, cool in the summer.

It was warm in the winter, volumes of vapor would rise in air.

마을마다 ‘시암’이라 부르는 공동 우물이 있었는데 사각형의 향교리 큰시암은 지금의 죽녹원인 성인산에서부터 바위 틈으로 졸졸 내려오는 석간수였다고 한다. “물 조-옿제!” 아직도 동네 어르신들은 시암에서 떠다 마시던 물맛을 자랑으로 여기신다.

Each village had its own ‘Siam’, a common water well.

Hyanggyo-ri’s square siam was full of water from Mt. Seongin, where Juknokwon is now.

“Great water!” the aged residents are still proud of their water, although it is no longer there.

죽순, 요만하지. 자고 일어나면 요만큼 커. 칠월이면 키가 커서 가지가 딱 펴지지.

Bamboo shoot, it’s this small.

But it grows this much overnight.

By July, they all get so tall and branches grow out on top.

대나무의 새순, 죽순은 4월 5월에 많이 보이는데 자라는 속도가 빨라, 밤 사이에 쑥쑥 커서 며칠만에 키가 큰 대나무가 되어 버린다. 하루가 다르게 자라는 모습이 경이롭다.

Bamboo shoots can be seen in April and May. They grow so fast, that they become tall bamboos just in a few days.

It is amazing to witness how they grow.
