LOCAL LITERACY PROGRAM PRODUCES RESULTS FOR EARLY READERS EDITED BY DEBBIE LEE THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
While the North Shore takes pride in its excellent public schools, it is sometimes easy to forget that neighboring districts face challenges that seem impossible to surmount. At Waukegan Public School District, 69.7 percent of children are low-income, one-third are English language learners, and a quarter of the student population is chronically absent. But women like Diane E. Winter, Chief Judge 19th Judicial Circuit Court, actively work to move the needle on these statistics. For five years, she has served as a tutor for Reading Success, an early literacy program developed by the Continued on PG 8

NEWS BONDY. PARKER BONDY Cont. from PG 1 coaching or helping,” Bondy says. “The instructors get to showcase their talent; the kids benefit because they’re receiving valuable tips and advice in between the commitments to their teams or classes.” Bondy launched the venture—Talenthood’s first Midwest branch—in early January, mere weeks after running into the 16-year-old founder of Talenthood, New Yorker Cooper Cohen, while vacationing in the Caribbean territory Anguilla. “Cooper,” Bondy says, “worked with a young soccer player in New York and then, later in the week, went to one of the player’s games to cheer for him. Imagine how thrilled that kid must have been when he saw his new mentor supporting him from a sideline.” But there’s more to Talenthood than giving local youth the opportunity to become a better athlete, or a finer musician, or an ‘A’ student in math, or a more efficient video editor. Talenthood also features a philanthropic component.
Each student/mentee donates $2 of each $40 session to one of three organizations: the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation, which is committed to embracing life’s challenges through gastrointestinal cancer research and education; Fenix Family Health Center in Highwood; or Great Lakes-based Kids Rank, which provides military children with a sense of stability through interactive group learning experiences. Talenthood’s math: add or hone a skill or two in 60 minutes—and add a couple of dollars to an organization’s coffers. Bondy chose the trio of charitable entities. “We are honored and grateful that Parker selected our foundation,” says Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation President and Founding Board Member Peter Eisenberg, whose son Henry is a good friend of Bondy. “It’s not surprising; Parker has been dedicated to giving back through our foundation for years. He’s a natural, doing what he’s doing with Talenthood. He’s genuine. I’ve seen him interact with his young cousins and Henry’s young cousins.
Parker always takes time to find out what interests young people. “His communication skills, along with his maturity, allow him to connect with people … people of all ages,” Eisenberg adds. Each instructor receives $32 for each $40 session, with $6 earmarked for Talenthood’s marketing efforts and website design. Bondy had a stable of 40-50 instructors through January 31; he makes sure all of his instructors are competent in their respective fields. He has welcomed seasoned soccer, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, and volleyball players into the Talenthood fold, as well as experienced swimmers, gymnasts, pianists, drummers, guitarists, and singers. More than 120 local parents had inquired about Talenthood-North Shore Region in its first few weeks of operation. Bondy’s administrative staff? Bondy. Just Bondy. “I’ve learned a lot since starting this,” says Bondy,

But he loves the opportunity to give back more than that. There’s hope that this will spread to other communities. Talenthood can have such a positive impact. Everybody wins— the kids, the kids’ parents, the instructors, the charities, and the community.”

Pom and Circumstance LAKE FOREST HIGH SCHOOL’S DANCE TEAM EXECUTES SCARY-GOOD POM ROUTINE, EARNS RUNNER-UP HONORS AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN FLORIDA BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Lake Forest High School’s varsity dance team frightened its head coach, Alexis Linton, in the middle of its final-round performance earlier this month at the Universal Dance Association’s National Dance Team Championships in Orlando, Florida. “It was kind of scary because it was going so smoothly,” Linton recalls. But pure joy stomped fear as Linton’s squad of dynamic Scouts—competing in the Medium POM division—held its final pose for four seconds following a highly athletic, super-in-synch routine on February 2. “That was the pinnacle of our season, and we experienced it on the final day of a national competition,” adds a proud Linton, whose 15-member troupe finished runner-up to a crew from Louisiana and also took ninth in the Medium JAZZ division. “I remember two key moments during the final when I thought, ‘Yes! Yes! That’s it!’ “Special,” adds the team’s third-year coach, who

cheered in high school and in college and danced professionally for years. “The whole weekend was special, a culmination of several months devoted to hard work and staying positive.” The varsity team’s road to claiming national silver on Super Bowl Sunday started last summer, when it automatically qualified to perform in Orlando by capturing top accolades at a summer camp held at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. But it didn’t start practicing the choreography

it would showcase on the national stage until November. T.J. Maple, of Nacogdoches, Texas, served as pom choreographer. The dancers practiced for three hours after school Monday through Friday and for nine hours every Saturday and Sunday. Some even found the time to hit the fitness studio at The Dailey Method in Lake Forest or complete rigorous CrossFit sessions. “We consider ourselves extreme athletes,” says senior Lilly Neil, a tri-captain with classmates Marissa Giangiorgi and Ava Manelis. “We gave it our all for three months. The workouts were lengthy and tough. We built our stamina and got in incredible shape. It was worth it. During our final routine, we could feel each other’s energy, and we fed off that. What also helped us was seeing our coaches, who were right in front of us, react positively to our moves; we knew we were doing well. “As soon as our routine ended, I felt a ton of pride.” Heard, after one of the Scouts’ performances in The Sunshine State? “I was told a security guard said, ‘That was a whole lot of sweetness out there,’ ” says a hoarse Audrey Giangiorgi, Marissa’s mother, who lost most of her voice due to her excessive cheering at the Walt Disney World Resort. “Another person
said, ‘Wow, do they know pom!’ The girls amazed me, amazed all of us. They didn’t just work hard, physically; they also studied videos of their routines at home, as well as pictures and screenshots. “The timing they had built and built and built, with the help of their coaches and choreographers, was outstanding,” she adds. “And they peaked, together, at nationals. It was a true team.” Some of the members have been dancing since age 3. Others play a varsity sport or two and dance on the side. Others are varsity cheerleaders. Their collective chant in the 2019-20 season: “One Team, One Fight, One Dream.” Team LFHS—a year after placing fourth nationally in the Large POM and Large JAZZ divisions—nailed its pom performance in the preliminaries on January 31, allowing it to advance directly to the finals segment two days later. In between it placed ninth in a field of 50 national jazz qualifiers with an affecting “Tiny Dancer” presentation, choreographed by Faymie Link, of Phoenix, and Megan O’Malley, of Austin, Texas. “Our pom routine is hard-hitting, athletic, and packed with fast movements,” says Rice University-bound Marissa Giangiorgi, a fourth-year varsity dancer, like Neil. “It takes a lot of teamwork, along with trust, to make it work and to make it look

good for the judges and audience members. So much of it is about making quick, unique visuals with our arms and legs. We also popped some tricks and jumps.” Giangiorgi and seven of her dance mates will graduate in the spring. Expect them to espouse the program’s motto, “P4L” (“Poms for Life”), and do next winter what so many others did during UDA Nationals this winter. “Our alumni are the best; they are incredibly supportive,” Neil says. “They called us, texted us, and posted something every day we were in Florida. The number of text messages we got from them, we couldn’t believe it. But we definitely appreciated their enthusiasm and constant interest in how we were doing at nationals. “It seemed like we received a text message every second.” Other members of the national runner-up ensemble: Caroline Allard, Olivia Elsasser, Lauren Plante, Lilia Simeck, Lucy Surkamer, Mary Considine, Erin Earls, Tess Ivinjack, Caroline Walsh, Ava Douglass, Lauren Milanak, Emma Drowne, and Elsa Dahlgren. Choral Mastery CHRISTIAN STIRLING LEADS SINGERS ON MUSICAL JOURNEY OF ENRICHMENT BY MONICA KASS ROGERS ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
By 6:45 on a Thursday night, most of the North Shore is headed home thinking, “One more day ‘til weekend break.” But not Christian Stirling. As music director at Saints Faith, Hope, and Charity Catholic Parish in Winnetka, he’s just beginning the string of rehearsals and Masses that are the highlight of his week. Watching him nimbly scoot from organ bench to piano stool to podium—with a bounce in his step and a smile on his face—it’s clear he’s in his happy place. “Choral music is my passion,” says Stirling, his British accent giving the “O” in “choral” the tall, open sound he coaches the choir to use when they sing. “That’s been true as far back as I can remember.” As a small boy in England, Stirling went to weekday evensong services in Cambridge, and Sunday afternoon Mass in a 11th century Norwich cathedral. “The beauty of it,” he remembers, “was so inspiring: the space, the sound of the organ, and the beautiful anthems being sung by boys that were not much older than me. It was the combination of all three— voices, music and setting—that really inspired me. I knew that’s what I wanted to do.” Decades later, after years of boys’ choir singing, music education, chairing two high school music programs, and getting a Doctorate (DMA) in Choral Conducting at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Stirling is still at it. He came to the U.S. on a Winston Churchill Fellowship (the British equivalent to a Fulbright Scholarship) in 2005, to examine similarities and differences between music education in North America and the UK. He met his future wife Heidi, a flautist and two-time Grammy-winning vocalist with the Chicago Symphony Chorus, and started at Faith, Hope, and Charity in 2008. Now, in addition to selecting and composing music, and playing the organ and piano for five Masses each weekend, he directs the choir and teaches music at the church’s school. His goal, for parish and pupils alike, is to instill a lifelong appreciation of music. The work that leads to that— weaving together the right music for each Mass, directing the choir, and teaching the children—has many different elements. Stirling’s priority with children is to teach them to read music. “That is the fundamental element that I think every music curriculum should have. But sadly, you rarely find it anymore,” he says. “In music education, a lot of the world has gone off on this tangent of very quick fixes. Like, ‘Oh, let’s have them go and do five weeks of African drumming, and then we’ve got the music requirement sorted.’ Yes, African drumming is wonderful and has many important musical benefits. But, an effective musical curriculum is characterized by a regular, systematic programs of sequential

study. One wouldn’t expect to learn to play the piano in five lessons, or indeed master African drumming in five lessons —it takes months or years. The only way kids can access music for a lifetime, and become independent learn-

ers, is first to teach them how to read it.” Stirling starts with basic staff notation, which encompasses pitch and duration. “The two big organizers to music are pitch (Is the note high or low?) and duration (How long does the note last?)” he explains. “Once you’ve got those pillars, you can read music. You have the pattern, the code.” Stirling says it takes the kids just a few weeks to learn to read music. “With that, they’re equipped to explore music independently, with the skill to pick up a piece of music and work it out for themselves, which can be very exciting for them.” Another maxim Stirling has in teaching is to introduce many kinds of music. “That’s always been a driving force behind my pedagogy,” he says. “I believe it’s important to push through what they know, to get to those things that are not so prominent and visible in their culture. There’s always that fine balance between meeting them where they are at, but then helping them to stretch a bit further.” The same is true in working with a choir. “In a typical church choir you may have people who never had any musical training, and those who are accomplished,” he says “A rehearsal is very much about the relationship between you and the musicians. You have to understand personalities, limitations, and strengths and work with those. As a conductor, you are a facilitator, ena b l i n g people to come on a musical journey with you, compromising where you need to, but striving to achieve your vision for how

I consider all worship— whether the music is old or new—to be contemporary, because it is being sung in the present, in the here and now.
a piece of music should sound.” Rehearsing music with the choir, Stirling guides the group toward “a very healthy choral sound. striving for unity of vowel sounds, good intonation, good breathing and posture, and good diction. The more solitary work of music composition and selection, is another compelling part of Stirling’s occupation. In the Catholic Church, the musical portions of a Mass are prescribed by a Liturgy of the Word at the beginning, and a Liturgy of the Eucharist later. As well, the choir sings hymns, psalms, and an anthem. To choose the music fitting this format for five Masses, Stirling studies the Scripture readings and the message for the day, matching musical selections with some element of those themes when possible. He must also balance the music stylistically. “There is a lot of debate in the Church between old versus new music,” says Stirling. Striking the right balance, he says, can be tricky, because music is a very subjective art form and likes and dislikes don’t always fall along age lines. Stirling’s thought? “I consider all worship— whether the music is old or new—to be contemporary, because it is being sung in the present, in the here and now.” While Stirling confesses he has a bias toward selecting choral music by British composers, such as Vaughan Williams and Herbert Howells, he also likes the music of Gjeilo, who writes in a style that is more sophisticated than pop music, but with some of its idioms. Stirling also writes music himself: liturgical pieces, anthems, and compositions for special occasions. He composed the music for his wedding, and his daughter’s First Communion, as well as an entire Faith, Hope, and Charity Mass setting. He’s included some of his pieces in services, without fanfare. “I don’t make a big thing about it,” he smiles, “I just slip them in here and there.” Looking ahead, he wants to compose more music, publishing it so that it can be shared. “Always, my ultimate goal is to engage people more deeply in their lifelong experience of music. Choral music is one of the most compelling ways to do that.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
