A Dream to a Destiny:

Razny Jewelers Marks 17 Years in the North Shore with a World-Class Expansion

HIGHLAND PARK Stanley and Jane Razny were leaving an entire world behind— friends and familiarity they may never again know. Together, they traveled for weeks across waters and lands to settle in Illinois, a home that promised stability with wide-open leafy roads and communities founded on family. The journey was anything but easy for a young couple. Still, they were confident it'd be more than worth it. Their future was waiting for them, after all. All they needed was the fortitude to work for it. A gifted bench jeweler, Stanley found his place with Leed's Jewelers in the North Shore, almost 5,000 miles from where he'd started. Like a brilliant diamond in a platinum setting, the North Shore is the jewel making Chicago shine even brighter as one of the most distinguished cities in the world. Neatly tucked against Lake Michigan's coast, it boasts the Highwood neighborhood's culinary delights, the oldest American outdoor music festival in Ravinia Park, and luxury shopping in downtown Highland Park. Many impressive landmarks have made this area the Midwest's worst kept secret. These destinations include the Bahá'í House of Worship, Chicago Botanic Garden, Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, and Northwestern University. Awarded for excellence in masonry, each brick of our boutique in Highland Park was laid at the direction of Stan Razny Jr. and his wife, Ingrid. For these second-generation jewelers, who were starting a family of their own, a commitment to community was paramount. "We've taken our time to learn what works," says Ingrid Razny. "Our specialists live within the community and understand the needs of our guests. We hand-select each item displayed as if we were choosing jewelry and timepieces for a dear friend. The families of the North Shore have rewarded our meticulous care with a loyalty that is nothing short of humbling." Indeed, Stan Razny Jr. insists on selecting the area’s only jeweler representing Swiss timepieces

innovators such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier, and Breitling, alongside designer and custom jewelry from the industry's top artists. Additionally, we are proud of our in-house service and design shop, complete with expert watchmakers and artisans.

Along with a wide range of private philanthropic efforts and events, Razny Jewelers is solidifying our bond with the North Shore in an unprecedented way in 2020. We are happy to announce the vast expansion of our Highland Park boutique at 1700 Green Bay Road! With more space and an updated aesthetic, we bring the best of the world right to the front doors of suburban families. By investing in the area's well-earned reputation with brick and mortar retail, which is essential to a thriving community, we are raising the caliber of the in-person shopping experience. We are most proud of the new Rolex installation, like no other in the city — a layout nearly ten times the size of our previous in-house Rolex boutique, and one of the most substantial arrangements held by any private, familyowned jeweler in the nation. Our renovated location also offers a sprawling single floor, housing a modern in-house Cartier salon, an extensive collection of Breitling timepieces surrounded by a new Breitling visual concept, a space dedicated to diamond artisans Rahaminov, Kwiat, Penny Preville, private rooms, and exclusive VIP shopping suites. Stop in to study the most dazzling diamonds in the world, or peruse our custom jewelry collection, crafted by the Razny Jewelers family. Seventeen years after Stan Razny Jr. began working side by side with his parents, he and Ingrid built the Highland Park boutique from the ground up. Another 17 years have passed since then, and it seems only fitting that we continue the legacy started by one young couple immigrating from Poland with a dream, who found promise and support in the North Shore.

Visit us today to discover our newly expanded Razny Jewelers boutique.

Growing and Grounded: Four Razny Jewelers Locations

Addison: 1997

The beautiful flagship location in Addison is full of history. It was here that the family’s partnership with Rolex, a brand synonymous with excellence and ingenuity, first began in 1998. A year later, in 1999, Razny Jewelers earned the privilege to represent timepieces by Patek Philippe, the last independent, familyowned Genevan manufacture and considered by many to be the most prestigious watchmaker in the world. Alongside these world-renowned timepieces, Razny Jewelers’ Addison location offers custom and designer jewelry, and an in-house expert team of watchmakers, jewelers, and designers for repair and servicing.

Highland Park: 2003

Awarded for excellence in masonry, Razny Jewelers' Highland Park boutique was designed and built by the Razny family. Here, Razny Jewelers has formed a bond with the North Shore. Their specialists live within the community and understand the needs of the clientele. The families of Highland Park and the surrounding areas have rewarded their meticulous care with a loyalty that is nothing short of humbling. It is the area's destination for luxury, including custom and designer jewelry and timepieces by Rolex, Patek Phillipe, Cartier, and Breitling.

Hinsdale: 2008

World-renowned craftsmanship meets small-town sensibilities; residents of the western suburbs and downtown dwellers looking for a change of scenery flock to Hinsdale for the neighborhood's historic shopping district. Families stop in often while walking their dogs or running errands with their children to browse our collection of designer jewelry and timepieces crafted by Rolex and Breitling. This community has thoughtfully stitched the Razny family into the patchwork of their lives.

Chicago: 2016

Razny Jewelers' Euro-style boutique in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood is the second luxury shopping concept of its kind in the country. This 7500 sq. ft. three-story location, designed to showcase the world's leading Swiss timepieces by Rolex and Patek Philippe, now also includes luxury safes and watch winders from German craftsmen Buben & Zorweg. Brides-to-be will also find a captivating collection of our bridal jewelry on the second floor. On the third floor, lives the stateof-the-art Rolex Plaque Watch Repair Center, bringing the attention to detail Geneva's known for to Chicago.

Thinking about relocating or purchasing a second home in warm, sunny Florida? You should consider the idyllic, small residential community of Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island, just south of Sarasota and north of Sanibel. This shimmering jewel is home to a beautiful historic downtown, sugar sand beaches, challenging golf courses and world-class fishing. There are no high-rises and residents take advantage of the incredible shelling, dog park, farmer’s market, bicycle path, Community Center and Johann Fust Library. Flights from O’Hare can land in four nearby airports with a private airport just five minutes off island. This winter haven offers a mix of luxury residences for purchase with visitors enjoying the impeccable service of The Gasparilla Inn & Club since 1911. With almost 30 years of successful experience working with buyers and sellers on the North Shore and continuing to offer services with a strong team in Illinois, I am happy to now offer my depth of real estate knowledge in your search for a Florida residence. Having made Boca Grande my second home since 1989, I am knowledgeable about all aspects of island living.

THE LIFESTYLE LIST

26

T IS LATE OCTOBER as I write this note, and I am already dreaming of the first sparkling snowfall, blanketing open lands in white and highlighting the skeletal winter beauty of our community’s trees. Each year I look forward to the snow’s glorious quiet that seems to beckon reflection and introspection. Quiet will touch the holidays this year in many ways. Lake Forest’s Tree Lighting Ceremony that has filled Market Square with song, dance, and good cheer for 35 years will be reimagined as a lighting up of community parks. Most will be decorated with lights that will remain on for the entire holiday season. Family walks through snowy parks and songs around home pianos will replace the beloved carols and cider in town, but the comforting feeling of community will live in all of us. Our December issue celebrates community and holiday spirit. In the Neighborhood’s “The Sound of Music” is a feel-good story about the Lake Forest Civic Orchestra, who will hold two performances of their Holly Jolly Family Concert on December 5th at the Gorton Center. House & Garden offers Allendale’s Cocktails for a Cause, a recipe for traditional Christmas puddings, and a how-to on forcing festive bulbs. The Lifestyle List offers holiday gift guides for him and for her, helping take the guesswork out of giving. On the subject of gift giving, our feature “Tucked Away” shines a light on toy store Sage Explorers, a hidden gem on Lake Forest’s Bank Lane. Owner Allison Gurza, who taught at the School of St. Mary for 15 years, has her shelves stocked with toys and games for children of all ages. Cover story “Making Spirits Bright” shares Dailey Method owner Rebecca Asfour’s story of keeping her studio doors open and building her new —wildly successful—retail business Raleigh Bird. I suggest snapping up her cozy casual wear before it sells out!

“Building a Mystery” explains the meaningful motivation behind Paul Bergmann’s The Architecture of Stanley D. Anderson, with James Ticknor and William Bergmann, a recently published book that shares incredible stories surrounding some of our community’s finest architecture. I plan to gift it to the all of the architecture buffs in my life. Finally, F & B shares the story of an extraordinary community gift in “LifeChanging Support.” Nonprofit organization North Chicago Community Partners provides equitable, high quality education and services to children and families that bridge the opportunity gap for those in underfunded school districts. Now more than ever, NCCP needs help supporting our neighbors to the north, so they can continue to meet the needs of children, families, and educators during this global health crisis. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy December days to read our stories. I wish each and every one of you a happy and healthy holiday season.

LACING PAWS OF ILLINOIS (PPI) was established in 2008 in Lake County with the goal of saving animals from high risk situations. Since opening, PPI has saved the lives of nearly 2,000 dogs and cats. All of the animals that are taken into the care and comfort of PPI receive proper veterinary care and a loving foster home while they wait to be placed in the “Hearts of their Forever Homes.” For those not quite ready for a pet, Placing Paws Adoptable Plush Pets are ready just in time for the holidays. Adopt a Plush Pet and help a real-life rescue dog or cat in need. All come with a Placing Paws bandanna, collar, and adoption certificate, and there is a wide variety of breeds to choose from. RENÈ ROMERO SCHULER EXHIBIT AT THE GALLERY

T

HE GALLERY LAKE FOREST is proud to debut Renè Romero Schuler’s  new art exhibit, I’m Making Lemonade.  The show—which runs throughout the month of December—exhibits two collections of work that demonstrate the breadth of Renè Romero Schuler’s art. The show’s title, I’m Making Lemonade, refers to the artist’s approach to artmaking and creation in this especially transformative year. One collection is focused on the symbolism of butterflies. The pieces in this collection are oil paintings on canvas, and sales from this body of work will be donated to LEAD, a Lake Forest based 501c3 organization. LEAD’s mission is to promote healthy family relationships, emotional wellness, and the prevention of alcohol, drug use, and other risky behavior by youth by providing parents and schools with cutting-edge substance abuse prevention and mental health services.  Of the Butterfly series, Schuler says, “My personal connection with butterflies is much like anyone else’s might be—they symbolize rebirth or transformation, and when you’ve had a ‘colorful’ life such as mine, this vision is a powerful one. I have essentially reinvented myself several times through my own life. I’ve gone through various

32

stages of personal development, and I have made a concerted effort to grow, adapt and change; hoping that each stage would bring more joy, beauty and happiness to my existence.” The second collection in this exhibit is comprised of beautifully elusive figures that showcase a new technique of original oil paintings on French Arches paper. The result is a subtle and strikingly beautiful whisper of imagery and feeling. “These paintings are deliberately ethereal, transcending space and time, and essentially emerging and flowing through the mist,” Schuler shares. “As always, my work is loaded with symbolism, and the figures stand tall and beautiful in the face of the ‘mist’, the texture, or the ‘mark-making’—all emblematic of ‘the Human Condition.’ The most important message to take away from experiencing my work is that we are all beautiful, and not despite all the baggage, scars, and bad choices we bring to the table, but because  of those things that have shaped who we are today.”

In lieu of an opening reception, Renè Romero Schuler will be holding gallery hours throughout December. Guests may make appointments to visit with the artist and view the paintings by calling The Gallery at 224-544-5961. The Gallery is located at 202 Wisconsin Avenue in Lake Forest.

AKE FOREST RESIDENT LoriLee Bielski spends a good portion of her day juggling responsibilities, making decisions, and doing her best to direct employees in the right direction as a partner in a global digital services firm. But no matter what, she always makes time for herself … and her bassoon. “It’s the one time in my week that I truly must focus on one single thing,” says Bielski, who has played the bassoon in the Lake Forest Civic Orchestra (LFCO) for the past 13 years. “I think it is almost a relief for me to follow someone else’s direction for a little while.” Indeed, as a high-profile executive currently juggling a constantly changing business environment, Bielski has often used her participation in the LFCO as a metaphor within her work life. “I’m an ensemble player, meaning that I must always know how to blend and harmonize, and these are the same things that are so important within any company,” Bielski says. “I even hire people who have played music at one time or another, because I then know that they are, in fact, center brained. They can essentially pull from both sides of their brain.”

This intriguing trait is another example of the multiple benefits of leading a life that includes music—one shared by the 55 current members of the LFCO, an organization that spent a good portion of its 32nd season finding a safe outlet for talent, creativity and sheer sanity during the ongoing pandemic. “Music is something that I can rely on, de-stress with, and have fun with,” explains LFCO President Howard Martino, who has sought solace in music ranging from Bob Dylan to Johannes Brahms in recent months. “It enables me to forget the stresses of life and let the music absorb into my soul.” Granted, from the beginning of time, humans have often felt like their world was crumbling around them. And for members of the LFCO, many of the most moving pieces they play came from the most tumultuous of times. “When I think of music making, I always try to get inside the head of the composer first,” explains LFCO Music Director Christopher Ramaekers, who is looking forward to his fourth season with the group—who performs primarily at Lake Forest’s Gorton Community Center. “Then, I think about the instability of the time in which they too lived, and I really do believe that it deepens our appreciation of their work.” It has been a bit of a salve for this trying time in the history of the LFCO. Mere days after a dynamic performance back in March, the world closed down due to COVID-19. And for several weeks, Maestro Ramaekers and the members of the LFCO found themselves in a bit of limbo as they devised Plan A, Plan B, and even Plan C for the future immediately ahead of them. “We wanted to provide our membership an outlet to play if they chose,” explains Martino. “But we also wanted to ensure their safety.” “This past summer, an ensemble I was in literally practiced in my garage,” Bielski chuckles. “We just wanted to make music -LFCO MUSIC DIRECTOR in any way we safely could.” CHRISTOPHER RAMAEKERS The members will be the first to admit that even before the pandemic, the group was facing its share of challenges, including the age of their audience seemingly getting older each year. “We are not immune from that, because the truth is that

“Just getting the chance to stand in front of a group of people creating live music again was something I will never forget.”

every orchestra had been facing this for a good number of years,” explains Bielski. Yet during “Gortina,” where they performed Alexander Borodin’s String Quartet #2 Nocturne at the Ravinia-style event held in Gorton Community Center’s parking lot last August, the members of the LFCO began to see the tide turn. “I truly believe that there is a new audience out there that is hungry for live performances of any and every kind,” says Bielski, who is also a member of a small chamber group within the LFCO. “To see all of the families who came out to enjoy that concert was a breath of fresh air for all of us.” “Just getting the chance to stand in front of a group of people creating live music again was something I will never forget,” explains Maestro Ramaekers, who will lead the LFCO in two performances at their Holly Jolly Family Concert on December 5. “I can’t even describe the sense of normalcy it was for all of us. Yet, at the same time, it reminded all of us how not normal any of this is.” And yes, there are certainly more challenges and, perhaps, more changes to come. For example, the group has been performing more chamber works as of late and delving into the works of more obscure composers, both new and old. “It’s a time of adapting and contemplating new ideas,” Bielski says of the group, which is currently considering recording more performances for its constantly evolving audience. “We are reaching out to our community to truly see what they want and need at this precarious time,” concludes Maestro Ramaekers. “Coming together in this way provides another level of emotion—an added dimension along with so much more honesty to our performances. When you are experiencing something like that together, it truly heightens the communal feeling of it all.” The Holly Jolly Concert is a collaborative family event featuring traditional and new Christmas carols, taking place Saturday, December 5. The Lake Forest Civic Orchestra will perform this concert and all 2020-2021 concerts at the Gorton Community Center’s John & Nancy Hughes Theater, 400 E. Illinois Road in Lake Forest. have run CO-OP PR, a public relations agency specializing in luxury marketing, media relations, and VIP events, for about 8 years, handling PR programs for clients from interior designers to retailers like Ferragamo and J. Crew, to major events like the Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show and Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens. A memorable experience from my early PR days in Chicago during the late 90’s was managing the publicity surrounding Karl Lagerfeld’s visit. He flew commercially from Paris and arrived without his luggage. He couldn’t have been more lovely about the situation even though he was faced with back-to-back media appointments. I recall he went straight to Jill Sander and bought enough clothes to get him through the visit. That would make me feel better too! This month I am focused on the opening PR campaign around the launch of IPPOLITA at 900 N. Michigan Avenue. The Chicago boutique marks the brand’s first store outside of its Madison Avenue flagship and eliminates the behind-the-glass barrier found in most luxury jewelers. Utilizing magnetic displays, customers are invited to touch, try on and experience jewelry in an intimate way an especially interesting concept to launch in this age of distancing and separation. I absolutely love the way their jewelry feels. COVID is pushing me think out of the box for how to fete the opening, which will include small pod ‘solobrations’ with the brand’s founder & CEO Ippolita Rostagno. FO REST & BLUFF

HIS LUSH RED AND GREEN arrangement is dotted with plump pomegranates, known throughout history to symbolize eternal life, fertility, death, rebirth, and abundance. The pomegranate continues be a symbol of Christmas in Greece, where it is commonly used to decorate the holiday table and hung above the door of the house on Christmas Day. Supported by an antique silver pedestal, the fruit stands out like ornaments on a tree—surrounded by Dutch Antique hydrangea, red tulips, boxwood branches, shiny magnolia leaves, blood red scabiosa, scarlet ranunculus, and velvety Hearts roses. THE DISH

TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS PUDDING words, recipe, and photography by Monica Kass Rogers

52

S

TIR IT UP! That is the chorus in Britain on Stir it Up Sunday, right before Advent. Churchgoers hear, “Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people,” and anyone— churched or not, with a love for boozy Christmas puddings stirs up the fruity mix to get the holidays going. Loaded with spice, fruit, nuts, and tradition, the Christmas “pud” is a lovely creation, more moist and mellow than American fruit cake. Since it is fed little tipples of brandy from the day it is made until Christmas, the treat emerges a well-spirited highlight of the holidays. Our recipe yields one large pudding centerpiece (made with a 7.5-inch x 5.25 inch pudding mold), with enough extra batter to make six little minis to go alongside. We have included a bright mix of raisin, dried cranberry, and apricot as the fruit base, but you can substitute in sultanas or currants, dried cherries, figs, or dates. Because the traditional “mixed spice” used to make British Christmas puddings is not readily available as a blend here, we have incorporated it in

the recipe as separate spices, along with a simple and delicious method for making your own candied citrus peel. To finish the pudding, you can cloak the finished pudding in a glaze of our brandy cream, or, simply dust it with a little powdered sugar snow. We have garnished with true sprigs of holly—the customary topper which represents the crown of thorns—but if you do the same, be careful not to let the berries touch the treat—they are not edible. Adjusting beloved British pud recipes for American larders, our recipe gives the quantities in cups and tablespoons. We have made it with frozen butter, rather than suet (although you can sub in a bit of suet if you like that savory flavor). And if you do not have a steamed pudding mold on the shelf, you can use a 6-cup mixing bowl. For the minis, little metal pudding molds are available online, but you can also use porcelain ramekins in a 3/4-cup size. Note: There is a little leeway in how much you fill the molds. If you use smaller molds for the minis, be sure not to fill beyond 3/4 full. There is enough space in the 6-cup pudding mold to fill with the main pudding batter, plus what you do not put in the minis.

THE DISH Christmas Pudding Makes one large pudding centerpiece (pudding will be about five-cups in size), and 6 mini puddings (each ½ cup) Equipment needed: one 6-cup pudding mold with fitted lid OR 6-cup mixing bowl with greased parchment paper and aluminum foil to make a lid, and kitchen twine to tie around the wrapped mold; six 3/4-cup mini pudding molds or ramekins with greased parchment paper and aluminum foil to make lids, and kitchen twine to tie around the wrapped mold; two large stock pots to steam the puddings, one for the 6-cup mold and one for the six minis. For the marinated dried fruit: • 1 cup black Thompson seedless raisins • 1 cup dried apricots, finely chopped • 1 cup dried cranberries • 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and cut into small dice • Juice of 1/2 orange to make 3 tablespoons (reserve orange peel to make candied peel, recipe below) • Juice of 1/2 lemon to make 2 tablespoons (reserve lemon peel to make candied peel, recipe below) • 2/3 cup cream sherry or ruby port

• • • • •

removed and discarded, bread torn into tiny bits 1/2 cup toasted, finely chopped pecans 2 large eggs 1 Tbsp honey 2/3 cup stout 1/3 cup whole milk

For greasing the pudding molds: • 4 tablespoons softened butter or 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening For the brandy cream: • 4 tablespoons salted butter • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, sifted • 2 cups whole milk • 1/4 cup superfine sugar • 5 tablespoons brandy

Make fruit mixture: In a large, non-reactive bowl, combine raisins, cranberries, apricot, and apple with the orange and lemon juices and sherry. Mix, then set aside while making candied citrus peel. In a small saucepot over medium-high heat, cover the orange and lemon peel with 2 inches of water. Heat to boiling and simmer For the candied citrus peel: • Peel of 2 fresh oranges, with much of the for 15 minutes. Strain peel out and discard white pith removed, diced small to make water. Replace cooked peel in pot, cover with a second batch of fresh water, heat to 2/3 cup • Peel of 1 fresh lemon, with much of the boiling, and simmer for another 15 minutes. white pith removed, diced small to make Strain peel out and discard water. Repeat one more time. 1/3 cup Next, heat 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup • 1/3 cup sugar water, and bring to a boil. Simmer for three minutes. Add cooked citrus peel, reduce For the batter: heat to low and continuing simmering, stir• 2/3 cup self-rising flour ring occasionally until peels are translucent • 1/4 tsp ground clove and liquid becomes a syrup. Scoop candied • 1/4 tsp ground mace citrus into the bowl of marinating dried fruit. • 1/4 tsp ground coriander Cover with a clean kitchen towel and allow • 1/4 tsp ground Jamaican allspice to marinate for 24 hours. • 1/4 tsp nutmeg • 1/4 tsp ground caraway seed Make batter: • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon Sift flour, sugar, salt, and spices into a large • 1/2 tsp salt • 2/3 cup frozen unsalted butter, grated bowl. Add crumbled bread. Stir in the fat (substitute 1/3 cup of shredded beef suet (butter, and suet, if using) and chopped pecans. Whisk egg and honey with stout for 1/3 of the butter if you like) and milk. Stir into dry ingredients (this is • 3/4 cup light brown sugar • 3 slices of f resh brown bread, crusts traditionally where each family member gives

the bowl a stir). Spoon all of the fruit mixture into the batter and stir to incorporate. Prepare and fill pudding molds: Using softened butter or solid vegetable shortening, copiously grease the inside of each mold. Starting with the mini pudding molds, fill each with about ½ cup of the mixture, making sure each mold or ramekin is no more than ¾ full. Smooth tops to level. Spoon the rest of the pudding mixture into the large mold. Remaining batter should fill the mold about two-thirds of the way. Smooth top to level. Cut and grease rounds of parchment paper to place on the top of each mold. Cover with lid (if using a pudding mold that comes with a lid) or cover each mold tightly with two layers of foil. Using kitchen twine, encircle each pudding, wrapping from top around bottom and up again. Tie to create a handle. Fill each of two large pots with enough water to come half the way up the sides of the molds you are steaming. Cover pots, heat water to slow boil, and steam the puddings for four to five hours, replenishing water if the level gets low. Remove finished puddings from steamers and cool. Remove wrappers. Prick surface of puddings with a toothpick and drizzle with a little brandy or sherry. Cover and store in a cool, dry spot. Unwrap occasionally to drizzle with a little more brandy, until Christmas day. Make brandy cream: In a heavy saucepan over medium-low heat, melt thebutter. Add flour and whisk constantly to create a thick, smooth paste. Continue whisking for 1 minute. Add milk and continue whisking for three minutes to form a smooth sauce. Add sugar, whisking until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to low and whisk for another five minutes. Whisk in brandy. Pour over pudding. Note: brandy cream can be made ahead, kept in the fridge, and reheated at service. To serve: Remove puddings to serving plates. Prepare brandy cream to pour over or serve on the side. Garnish with holly sprigs, being careful not to let any holly berries touch the puddings—the berries are inedible.

These tall and graceful showstoppers need more time to bloom, so look for bulbs that have already been planted to have flowers in time for the holidays. Place in a sunny location and rotate for even growth and tie or stake as necessary to keep upright. According to experts at the Chicago Botanic Gardens, “Amaryllis bulbs can tolerate dryness, but not soggy conditions.” Therefore, allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. Each delicately scented flower will last about one week, with more blooms to follow. Amaryllis bulbs can last for years if stored and properly cared for.

Paperwhites (Narcissus) are winter blooming daffodils in zones 8-10, but in our zone 5 they need to bloom indoors. Delicate and fragrant, these clusters of snowy white blooms are easy to grow and long lasting. Nestle the bulbs root side down in a decorative cache pot or clear vessel filled with glass or marble stones. The roots should barely touch the water to wake them up and entangle themselves in the stones for anchor. Rotate the container in a sunny spot so the blooms grow upright, or tie them loosely with twine to keep together. GIFTING SERENITY Making mental health treatments accessible to all. words by Dr. Bal Nandra photography by Robin Subar

68

HE NATIONAL conversation on mental health is helping to remove stigmas and give people a heightened awareness of how mental health affects our daily lives. We are seeing more honesty about various mental health struggles and the ways people are seeking treatment. This is an essential step in society, but one that still has limitations for many. IV Solution, Ketamine Centers of Chicago provides alternative and additional therapy for those struggling, but treatments are often not accessible to everyone. The lack of access to mental health care for those in financially difficult situations is a huge barrier hurting many communities. Therefore, Dr. Bal Nandra, IV Solution, Ketamine Centers of Chicago’s Chief Medical Officer, is thrilled to announce a new 501(c) (3) foundation created to address these very concerns. Dr. Nandra created the Serenity Foundation to sponsor ketamine infusionbased treatments for those experiencing financial hardships who are seeking more than just conventional medications and treatments or have failed multiple therapies. In the midst of the giving season, the Serenity Foundation will begin to achieve its mission with the support of donor funds from philanthropic, mental health, wellness advocates, and organizations. Psychiatric services are integral to the health and wellness of our communities and Serenity is needed now more than ever to finally provide a novel and effective treatment to those in need. Ketamine treatments can be used for depression, PTSD, addiction, and other mental health illnesses. Ketamine’s surprisingly high success rate and speed at which it was able to relieve major depression was reported twenty years ago at Yale University. Since then, dozens of studies have duplicated those findings, and ketamine administered intravenously via infusion is 70 to 75 percent effective for relieving the most difficult mental health cases. Ketamine has been longitudinally studied for years to assure safety of patients and proves to have minimal to no side effects. The Serenity Foundation and its Board that includes Alexa James, CEO of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), believe that ketamine treatments are an impactful service that should not discriminate based on a patient’s financial situation. “IV Ketamine treatments should be accessible to everyone suffering from depression, anxiety, chronic pain, PTSD, and more,” says Dr. Bal Nandra. “Why should treatments only be limited to those that can afford them? When we start taking care of everyone and their mental health needs, our society will be a much better place.” If you would like to inquire more about giving to Serenity Foundation or are in need of financial assistance, visit serenityfoundationusa.org. IV Solutions and Ketamine Centers is located at 712 N. Dearborn Street in Chicago. For more information, call 844-9-IV-MEDS (948-6337) or visit chicagoivsolution.com or ketaminechicago.com to watch and listen to our many patient testimonials, news, and radio stories.

BUILDING A MYSTERY The newly published book by Paul Bergmann, , tells the incredible story of some of Lake Forest’s finest architecture. words by Tricia Despres photography by Robin Subar styling by Theresa DeMaria

W

HEN PAUL Bergmann reflects on his childhood, many of his memories are within the offices of renowned architect Stanley D. Anderson. Of course, prior to his death in 1960, most knew Anderson as the architectural visionary behind the signature Country Georgian style that quite literally transformed the landscape of Lake Forest. But as a fifth grader with a big curiosity, Paul Bergmann simply knew Stanley D. Anderson as the man his father worked with each and every day. Paul’s father, William Bergmann, served as a partner at the historic architecture firm of Stanley D. Anderson and Associates. And on many a Saturday, Paul would accompany his father to the office to do everything from sweeping floors to emptying ashtrays. But as the years went by, Paul Bergmann was given more and more responsibility within the office, including the rather mundane job of tucking exquisite architectural drawings into a countless array of file cabinets within the Lake Forest-based firm.

“I was always intrigued with the really old ones,” recalls Bergmann in a recent interview with Forest & Bluff. “They were such beautiful houses from the 1930s. I was continually asking my dad where the houses were and if we could go drive to see them.” But life often got in the way, so they would rarely have the opportunity to take that drive. As William Bergmann got older, many of those unique drawings were ultimately packed up into boxes that found their way to the Bergmann household, essentially collecting

dust as the world continued to turn. “My dad always promised that he would sit down with me and go through the drawing collections we had and tell me the stories behind them,” remembers Bergmann, who also works as an attorney and is a lifelong resident of Lake Bluff. “But you know how it goes … those discussions never happened.” But after William Bergmann’s retirement in 1992 and shortly before his death in 1994, he came to his son with an urgent request.

“One of the things he charged me with was to find a home for those drawings,” Bergmann remembers. And now, he has. Bergmann’s new book, The Architecture of Stanley D. Anderson, with James Ticknor and William Bergmann, serves as the definitive look at the architectural works of Stanley D. Anderson and highlights many of the extraordinary architectural foundations of the homes and institutions that make Lake Forest what it is today. The book also drawings of works done outside the state of Illinois, from quaint vacation cottages in Canada to elaborate ranches in Wyoming. “I still remember pulling out the very first drawers of drawings at my parent’s house and being almost overwhelmed

by it all,” remembers Bergmann, who currently serves as a board member of the Lake Bluff History Museum and is a past board member of the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation and the Elawa Farm Foundation. “There was not only a mystery within those drawings, but little surprises within each one.” Finding a home for more than 10,000 drawings of nearly 1,700 projects such as Lake Forest High School and the Northern Trust Bank building was not as easy as it might sound. While Bergmann originally thought that he would hand over the entire collection to The Art Institute of Chicago, he was made aware that they wouldn’t be able to accept his gracious offer unless the entire collection was indexed and archived first. So, Bergmann got to work. “Some of the drawings were of quite simple jobs, like repairing a screen door or fixing the back steps of someone’s porch,” the archivist of the Stanley D. Anderson Archives remembers. “But then, there were the drawings of some of the finest residences in Lake Forest and beyond.” The only problem was that many of the drawings either did not have addresses listed on them, or the address had changed since the home was originally built. “A home’s address in 1936 might not be its address now,” Bergmann remarks. Therefore, Bergmann was left to scour through countless telephone books of the time and research various anecdotes about the properties. Finally, Bergmann was able to publish his book this year. One of the residences featured in his book is Stanley Anderson’s very own house, which is now a part of Deerpath Hill Estates, a subdivision on King Muir Road that Anderson designed for Henry Turnbull from 1926 to 1929. As the story goes, Turnbull went bankrupt in the Depression, even-

tually giving the house to Anderson to cover the fees owed. “We moved into this house in 1984, and I can still remember the day that William Bergmann, who was the last surviving architect of Stanley Anderson’s firm at the time, stopped by,” remembers Lake Forest resident Jim Opsitnik, who lives in Anderson’s aforementioned Deerpath Hill Estates home. “Not only did he tell us about the history of the house, but he also provided us with the original blueprints of the house. From that day on, I have worked on various upgrades to our home while working incredibly hard to not destroy its integrity.” Bergmann notes that in the days leading up to the release of his new book, he was jumping out of his skin with excitement, thrilled that the project had was complete and the book would soon be out for others to enjoy. He also could not help thinking about what his dad would think. “I think my dad would be proud, but also quite surprised that I did this,” reflects Bergmann. “Some days felt like an endless jigsaw puzzle that I would never finish. But now that I have, it feels so very good.” The Architecture of Stanley D. Anderson, with James Ticknor and William Bergmann is available at Lake Forest Book Store, 662 N. Western Avenue, Lake Forest, 847-234-4420.

Lake Forest’s REBECCA ASFOUR thrives through positivity and creativity, building a community rooted in wellness.

N

OT MUCH STOPS Lake Forest’s Rebecca Asfour in her tracks. But ask this owner of The Dailey Method in Lake Forest and Vernon Hills to walk you through what the last six months have been like and it causes even her to stop and catch her breath. “We knew something really bad was coming,” Asfour recalls of the news of the pandemic shutting down boutique fitness studios and small businesses like hers. “Our clients were getting nervous and our class attendance started to fall off.” Then in mid-March, the governor deemed small businesses like The Dailey Method as non-essential and had to close. “The day after I closed the studios and cancelled all of our classes, I taught my first class virtually on Facebook,” she says. “I could tell that people needed to move and connect in a safe way. For me, movement is my grounding, my medicine, my therapy—and I know this is true for my community, too. I needed to figure out how I could best serve them and do it quickly.” What Asfour didn’t expect was a community that would rally around her. She had clients who were nervous to take in-person classes because of COVID-19 but they wanted to keep their memberships with the studio. “The generosity and commitment to our studio is something I’ll never forget,” she says. “So many of our members kept their memberships going even when our doors were shut. This was incredibly motivating to me—in those really dark hours when giving up would have been much easier. But our teachers stepped up and agreed to teach from home. Our barre classes translated incredibly well online—no equipment needed. It took us about six days to figure out how we

“For me, movement is my grounding, my medicine, my therapy—and I know this is true for my community, too.” could use Zoom to teach, we created new class formats that were shorter and more focused, and soon we had a full schedule of barre and cycle classes online. The quality of our online classes was amazing and we had hundreds of people moving with us each day. In the early days of the pandemic, our online community truly helped each other stay connected, grounded, and sane.” Today, The Dailey Method continues to teach virtual classes and record them, giving members more than 400 saved classes they can take on demand. As restrictions on fitness studios relaxed, Asfour enhanced her class offerings. “Now we have indoor in-person barre classes as well as cycle (50 percent of pre-COVID-19 class capacity is allowed) at each studio,” she explains. “There is a class available at almost any hour someone wants to workout with us.” As Asfour began to regain her class momentum, the clamor to bring back the athleisure and loungewear apparel she sold at the studio reached a fever pitch. “There’s always been this part of me that wanted to have a retail store,” she says. “Last year, we expanded our in-studio retail selection quite significantly. It was a natural extension for us to sell cute workout wear and cozy, athleisure items. We offer high-quality pieces at reasonable price points, and we carry smaller, niche brands as well as well-known ones like Spiritual Gangster and Beyond Yoga. I try on and test everyFO REST & BLUFF

thing we sell and I can make recommendations on what will work for clients.” Using the technical skills she honed as she took her fitness studio online, Asfour launched her online retail space, “Raleigh Bird.” “Raleigh” is the name of her 10-year-old daughter and “Asfour” means “bird” in Arabic. Just in time for the holidays, Raleigh Bird customers can buy online and pickup in the studio, ship to their house, or even select $5 local delivery, which means you can receive your purchases the very next day. “Now having our retail online, we can serve our customers who are coming to the studios for class and the ones who are staying at home. Plus, with local delivery, we are able to offer a convenient experience. It gives people the ability to shop local but at Amazon

speed.” In spite of having to navigate a year filled with challenges including supervising e-learning for her two young children, and sharing home office space with her husband Charlie, Asfour has never wavered in her commitment to keeping her studios open. “I channel the power of positivity,” she says, having just celebrated her fifth year of owning the Lake Forest studio. “I haven’t always done this, but in the last several years, I’ve found that if you approach a challenge by looking at the opportunities and possibilities around it, you can turn it around into something positive. I’ve always wanted to figure out how to teach online and have an online store and 2020 just told me it was now or never.” To learn more about The Dailey Method, visit thedaileymethod.com. HE GOOD NEWS for North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) is that their work has not stopped since COVID-19 struck the world in midMarch of this year. And the bad news is . . . though their work has not stopped, they have found an even greater need to be filled in the community. Co-founder and executive director Jennifer Grumhaus says this life-changing turn of events has allowed NCCP to hone in and focus on what is really of utmost importance. “The pandemic highlighted the need for the whole child and whole family support. We made a conscious decision to refocus our investments and make a real difference.” NCCP was founded in 2008 with capital from the Gorter Family Foundation, a Lake Forest family. The original goals of NCCP are much the same as they are now. “When we became aware of the needs of our neighbors, we decided to be part of the solution and help make a change. Our mission is to provide equitable, high quality education to all children and to try and figure out how to bridge the opportunity gap for those from underfunded school districts,” Grumhaus says. She is a former investment banker who changed careers after business school. “I married a man from Lake Forest and never expected that this is would be my life’s work. We have five biological kids. We have 30 plus other kids that have moved into our home for a period of time, over the past 10 years, several from North Chicago.” “The ‘community school’ is the foundation of NCCP’s operating model. Rather than building another community center or spending money on bricks and mortar, the school becomes the setting for our work, so the money we raise and the talent Fresh produce provided by and time we mobilize directly Elawa Farm is appreciated by the 175 families who attend supports students, families, and NCCP’s bi-weekly food educators,” Grumhaus explains. distributions. “We’re trying to fill the gaps, not be the teachers. We hire from the community and hope to strengthen communities through the schools. We now have 35 employees and about 2,000 volunteers that work with us. They’re all very diverse, from different neighborhoods. Seventy percent of my employees are from North Chicago, Waukegan, Zion, on purpose. We’re really serving their

community, if you will. My job is just to create a platform for these amazing young people, to do the work of their own community,” Grumhaus says. Before COVID-19, NCCP supported the social, emotional, and academic skill development of students and helped address basic needs. This included lunchtime learning programs and after school programs. NCCP serviced approximately 1,500 students every week in some kind of wraparound program. They also provide a school-based food pantry where they served 250 to 300 families—and a health clinic in school that serves several hundred students a year. There is also a vision program so children can get glasses. Additionally, they help plan and execute about 70 family events, engaging families more in the learning of their children. “NCCP supports educators by doing all we can to ensure students come into the classroom and are ready to learn and have the extra support they need to thrive,” says Grumhaus. “NCCP is the lead organization ensuring our students are whole and healthy. Even during this COVID-19 crisis, they continued their important part and went above and beyond providing at-home educational activities for our students and lightened many burdens on our families,” says the Mayor of North Chicago, Leon Rockingham. “Jennifer Grumhaus and her staff have the energy, hope, and fire that’s resonating throughout the community—bringing so much to so many. Our schools have significantly improved in many areas and NCCP has a big part in that success. We are grateful for their FO REST & BLUFF

Since mid-March, NCCP has distributed 7,500 Snack and Learn Kits which include math, ELA, science, and art activities for students to complete at home.

commitment to D187 and the city of North Chicago.” When the organization was originally founded, NCCP worked with grades K-12. But about five years ago, after working alongside the school district and after receiving support from a significant corporate sponsor, they were able to create an early childhood center in North Chicago. They now have about 280 young students, ages 3-5, who are able to receive a free education. When COVID-19 struck, Grumhaus wasted no time gathering her team and figuring out how they were going to meet the community’s needs. As a school-based program that could no longer meet in the schools, they basically had to rethink everything. “In 72 hours, we recreated the whole organization. Every employee said, ‘we’re not afraid, and we want to serve.’ We stayed on the front lines and we became an essential business.” The first thing NCCP did was create a whole new program structure, which they called the Community Care Plan. The plan includes three new programs, one of which is designed to provide essential resources to families, including food and infant care items. Instead of only serving food through the school-based pantry, NCCP now distributes resources at multiple locations to approximately 200 families each week. Next, they attacked the challenges inherent with virtual learning, especially for lower income families. When March came and everyone was sheltering in place, most people found it challenging enough. But for the families that NCCP serves, that challenge was at an entirely different level. “We just knew how difficult virtual learning would be for our families. We also knew how difficult shelter in place would be,” Grumhaus shares. “Sheltering in place is different if you live in Lake Forest. We usually have a stock of books, board games, and art supplies that we can leverage to fill the time. Many of the families we serve don’t have access to those types of resources.” Well aware of those differences, Grumhaus and her team decided to do something different for the families they serve.

86

“Instead of doing more virtual learning, virtual engagement, we decided to put tangible things in the hands of our children and families. We created two new products, one called a snack and learn kit. Each kit is distributed weekly and includes five learning activities all in English and Spanish and several healthy snacks.” Grumhaus shares that in addition to these kits designed specifically for children, they also prepared “family activity kits, which are more robust and designed for the whole family to use. We distributed these kits one time per month. The kits include cooking, art, health and wellness and STEM activities. We hoped they would keep families engaged and connected.” “Our community school model is very unique. We have strong, authentic relationships within and around North Chicago. More than 50 partners work alongside us to support students and families. Churches, corporations, civic partners, schools . . . their extraordinary contributions of time, talent, and treasure make our work possible and differentiate NCCP from other organizations,” Grumhaus says. “All of the communities in Lake County are rich with resources. It is humbling and encouraging to watch neighbors unite.” For more information, please visit northchicagocommunitypartners.org.

HEN YOU THINK about it, who better to open an educational toy store than a former educator? Allison Gurza grew up in Lake Forest and, other than escaping to California for six years during college, has lived here all of her life. For 15 years, she taught at School of St. Mary, mainly in 4th and 5th grades. “When people would ask me, ‘how long have you been teaching?’ and 15 years would come out of my mouth—I would think, ‘where did all that time go?’ It really felt like a blink of an eye. I was so dedicated to teaching that it was truly my whole life. And I thought, ‘okay, I need to do something different to have a little bit more life balance.’ But it’s so funny, because this year, this has been my whole life, trying to keep the store going,” Gurza says. Gurza left teaching in 2017 to open Sage Explorers. Located on Bank Lane, half of the space is dedicated to unique and interesting toys and games for children of all ages, and half is a Learning Center, where Gurza and a team of educators provide tutoring services.

“I didn’t want to completely leave teaching—that’s why this is the perfect combination.” What makes any business not only survive, but thrive, undoubtedly takes both inspiration and ingenuity. It is clear that Gurza has both in spades. Sage Explorers has been a bit of a community secret, as it is tucked away on Bank Lane. But the store is a huge hit among loyal customers. Tish Houston was first referred to the store because the staff provides tutoring. “My daughter has used the tutoring service, and I have found the tutors to be great,” Houston says. “My daughter really enjoys working with her tutor and has gotten a lot out of it.” “And Allison is a great pleasure to work with, and very professional in scheduling and all parts of that. That brought me into the store, and I just love the store. I think it’s adorable. They have such unique and unsual toys. And again, Alison is wonderful, providing recommendations on age appropriate choices. And I think that’s where the bent of it being a little bit educational is a great fit,” Houston says. Gurza has stocked the store with new items for the holidays and is in the process of hiring to keep the store consistently open. She envisions going to an appointment only model, because the store itself is small. Gurza is proud to carry many brands from local Lake Forest vendors. Some of these include Lit League, which is a book club in a box, Cards by Prissy, handmade greeting cards, Creative Cuts—another line of handmade greeting cards, a book by local author Patricia Ensing, E-Blox, circuit building sets that are compatible with Legos, and Slam—a card game developed by local young man, Owen Schuler. The merchandise at Sage Explorers includes high quality toys and games for infants, toddlers, and children of all ages. It also carries a large selection of puzzles and crafts. Everyone is encouraged to come in and simply play. Gurza has demos of all games and wants kids to try them out before purchasing. Complimentary gift wrapping is another great perk. Gurza is delighted to lend a hand if you are not sure what you want or need. She takes pride in being able to truly listen to what customers want and to guide them accordingly. Sage Explorers also has a web site where customers can order online either for either curbside or in-store pick up, or for free local delivery. Gurza shares, “Hopefully, with the tutoring going well and customers starting to filter back in, we have made the turn.”

“I didn’t want to completely leave teaching—that’s why this is the perfect combination.” Running any kind of business right now presents a whole new set of challenges. “When COVID-19 first occurred and the kids were e-learning, the tutoring aspect really took off and the store essentially temporarily closed. I still tutor almost all day long,” Gurza says. “We take all precautions to make the tutoring aspect safe. Masks are 100 percent required. I did invest in very nice and high-quality air purifiers.” “Our saving grace was Easter. Nobody could leave their house to get supplies. I was up to my eyeballs making Easter baskets. It was really fun. Luckily the store was very well stocked. I made them by age, with different games and toys. And I would supplement when parents wanted them to have candy, from Sweet’s, so that was convenient. I was here every day, even though the store was closed. I was filling online orders, doing delivery, taking phone orders, and creating Easter baskets.” After that it got very quiet. Allison used that opportunity to fine tune some of her business skills. “Obviously my background was education and I could run a store in normal times without a good business background. But running it this year, I decided it was time for me to take the time and learn more about how to better manage the business. Because we were in very lean times and I wanted nothing more than for the store to succeed and survive. I wanted to know how to get it on more Sage Explorers is located at 644 N. PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE TUMMY TUCK words by Steven Bloch, M.D.

O

ne of the most frequent requests that I get is for a “Tummy Tuck.” Many patients find that despite diet and exercise they cannot achieve the shaped, toned, flat abdomen they desire.

In assessing a patient for a “Tummy Tuck” multiple factors are taken into account.

1. What is the status of the overlying skin and the degree of laxity? Is the laxity confined to the lower or upper part of the abdomen or both? 2. What is the status of the underlying muscles? Do they meet in the midline or are they separated from pregnancies or intra-abdominal fat. 3. What is the distribution of excess fat? Is it diffuse or localized in the lower upper abdomen? Does it extend to the flanks? Depending upon the above assessment a customized operation can be performed to address these concerns. There are multiple procedures or techniques that can be employed. NATURE’S WONDERS TRANSFORMED

S ONE OF THE 20th century’s most gifted artists, Jean Schlumberger created fantastic designs that transformed nature’s wonders into objects of mesmerizing beauty. With gold and dazzling gemstones as his palette, he captured the glory of flowers, exotic birds, and mythical creatures in bejeweled statements unrivaled in the world of jewelry design. Though cast in stones and precious metals, Schlumberger’s is a world of energy and movement. Jellyfish with sapphire tentacles and jeweled dolphins undulate with the rhythms of the sea; glittering petals and leaves are stirred by gentle breezes. “I try to make everything look as if it were growing, uneven, organic,” he once said. “I want to capture the irregularity of the universe.” Schlumberger’s first design in precious metal and gemstones—a gold cigarette lighter in the shape of a goldfish with gemstone eyes and flexible tail—became a classic. In 1941 he created the Trophée clip for Diana Vreeland, legendary editor of Vogue. Now in the Tiffany & Co. Archives, the clip features an oval-cut amethyst and ruby shield with a warrior’s chain mail scaled with diamonds, and longbow, arrows, spear, and ruby-set sword in blue enamel. In 1956 Walter Hoving, chairman of Tiffany & Co., asked Schlumberger to join the company. A special design studio and salon were decorated to the designer’s specifications. With an unlimited supply of the finest colored stones now at his fingertips, Schlumberger created some of the most fabulous jewelry designs of his career.

94

Schlumberger often traveled to Bali, India, and Thailand to fire his imagination and create his own magical mementos, such as the exotic Oiseau de Paradis clip with yellow beryl, amethysts, emeralds, and sapphires; and the Sea Bird clip that combines a bird’s beak and head with a serpent’s body in pavé diamonds, rubies, and spike-like 18k gold plumage. His work is distinguished by a strong sculptural quality, and this strength of design unifies the varied elements in his most intricate pieces. As in nature, every flower, leaf, bird, and fish is unique—a true Schlumberger original shaped into a well-integrated work of art. In later years, Jean Schlumberger returned to Paris, the city that awakened his artistic soul. He died in 1987, at the age of 80, leaving a legacy of bejeweled flowers, ocean life, and birds of wonder. Tiffany & Co.’s high jewelry collection, The Legendary Designs of Jean Schlumberger, is infused with an imaginative spirit and curiosity, celebrating Schlumberger’s distinctive use of colored gemstones and radiant Tiffany diamonds—among the most expressive and innovative in the world of high jewelry design. The Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Bird on a Rock clip in platinum and 18k yellow gold with an oval aquamarine and round brilliant diamonds seen above is a part of this collection. The gemstones are customizable—style icon Bunny Mellon’s 1965 version was created with Lapis lazuli, ruby, and diamonds. Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Bird on a Rock clip in platinum and 18k yellow gold with an oval aquamarine and round brilliant diamonds is available at Tiffany & Co., Northbrook Court, 847-272-5785.
