More than just a qualification....... At North Hertfordshire College we are changing the way that students are taught and education is delivered, in order to fully prepare young people for today’s employment market. As a founder member of the Gazelle Group of colleges, our students ‘learn by doing’ and gain not only technical and industry specific skills, but general business and enterprise knowledge as well. For example, our Hairdressing students will not only learn the skills required to cut, colour and style hair, but will also gain customer service, marketing and administration skills from working in our commercial salon. We believe that this extensive set of skills and experience will make our students both sought after by potential employers or prepare them to create their own employment. This year we have built on our existing commercial services and launched a number of learning companies where students will work on live projects and gain industry experience relevant to their course of study. As well as working within the college itself, our students gain valuable experience working on projects for the local community. Our Health and Social Care staff and students worked with the local police force and council to launch a new youth club in the Hyde area of Stevenage. The club has proven to be a huge success, not only in providing students with valuable experience and giving young people a place to go, but reducing the crime rate within the area. This year we are launching the first annual ‘Kick Start Christmas’ market, inspired by the traditional German Christmas markets. Our students will be involved running stalls, providing theatre and music performances on stage and decorating the centre in preparation for the market. Our Beauty Therapy students are working with the charity ‘Kissing It Better’ this term to provide a range of beauty treatments to patients at Lister Hospital, and our students will also be producing a schools information pack for Stevenage Youth Council.

Entrepreneurship as a strategic driver for change Fintan Donohue, Chief Executive Officer of North Hertfordshire College founded Gazelle along with four other college principals with the aim of transforming further education through enterprise and entrepreneurship. Working with the Gazelle colleges are a number of Gazelle entrepreneurs such as Peter Jones and Doug Richards who have pledged to bring their knowledge and experience of building and growing successful enterprises to the Further Education sector. The Gazelle Group now consists of nineteen colleges from across the UK whose students have had opportunities to enter national competitions and attend enterprise conferences, exhibitions and workshops. This year our students competed against 10 other colleges to reach the final of the Pantrepreneur Challenge; a competition set by Pants to Poverty brand founder Ben Ramsden. Students were tasked with designing a pair of Olympic themed pants and creating a marketing campaign to sell as many pairs as possible within a restricted timescale.

Our students visited MADE: The Entrepreneurial Festival in Sheffield to attend workshops and hear from speakers including Wayne Hemingway and Peter Jones. We have also recently teamed up with Gazelle Entrepreneur Penny Power to launch the Digital Youth Academy at the Goldsmith Centre in Letchworth and teach young people how to use their digital and social media skills to meet the needs of today’s businesses and find employment.

“Working with the Gazelle colleges are a number of Gazelle entrepreneurs who have pledged to bring their knowledge and experience of building and growing successful enterprises to the Further Education sector.”

Are entrepreneurs born or made? Have you ever wondered how or where entrepreneurs like Sir Alan Sugar, Peter Jones or Richard Branson get their business acumen? Were they born with an intuitive creativity or did they gain it along the way by learning through experience? Peter Jones believes that if you have the ambition to succeed that you can be supported towards success and learn the skills required to be successful in business. It’s for this reason that he has collaborated with awarding body
