JYIANS OUR SUPERHEROES The theme for this 2018 issue of our Yearbook is ‘JYIANS – OUR SUPERHEROES’. What constitutes a superhero? We could broadly define a “hero” as someone who rises above his or her fears and limitations to achieve desired goals. A hero embodies what we believe is best in ourselves. Heroes include fictional figures such as Batman or Superman, or “real world” SCDF firefighters who bravely risk their lives to enter burning buildings to save others. Our theme is not just heroes, but “superheroes” – who can be defined as “individuals with fantastic powers, who share certain characteristics namely “strength of character, deep belief in a system of positive values, and a determination to protect those values”. The superhero, more than the ordinary hero, has abilities that normal people do not and cannot have, unless they gain such “super powers”. Thus, a superhero such as Superman, “is bigger than life” and displays such characteristics as never quitting or waivering from his/her values. JYians, you are superheroes in many ways! You are well ingrained with the R 2IGHT VALUES and you have Strength of Character. You strive to achieve the Vision to be Gracious and you are Learners for Life! With our R 2IGHT VALUES and 21st CC skills, JYIans will achieve extraordinary accomplishments that will impact lives! In this very issue, the Pages will celebrate JYians in action and in their best, and with their family and community of many hands that raise them into “Superheroes”. By celebrating the 2018 journey and victories, we are confident that JYians, Our Superheroes will continue to bravely take on new challenges and scale new heights of success. For Juying, U & I, Together we will Succeed!

Our students have worked hard and continued to put up a commendable and consistent performance across the different academic subjects, sustaining a splendid all-round value-added performance for the school at the GCE O and/or N level examinations for the past 5 consecutive years. JOY OF LEA RNING @ JUYING There is a superhero in all of us.

APPLIED LEARNING PROGRAMME VISION Every JYIAN a confident and competent communicator using Standard English

MISSION To equip all JYians with lifelong learning skills, attitude, and values that competent and confident speakers should espouse, and to provide each JYian with an opportunity to showcase them.

LONG TERM GOALS 1. To equip all JYians with lifelong learning skills, attitude, and values that competent and confident speakers should espouse. 2. To provide each JYian with an opportunity to showcase them in an environment that effectively engages and stimulates critical thinking. 3. To cultivate skills for Cognitive Development to develop students as critical thinkers and self-directed learners of which communication is a critical skill.

From its inception in 2011, the school’s Applied Learning Programme, which aims to “Develop Confident and Competent Communicators”, has come a long way. The school’s ALP has a Tier 1 programme for all classes called “Stand and Deliver”. Every student takes turns to prepare his/her speech and is scheduled to speak during his/her recess break at a designated area called the “Speaker’s Corner” in the canteen, which is a stage equipped with a podium. There are also TV screens installed around the canteen for student speakers to showcase their live speeches for other JYians to watch. The school’s ALP has two Tier 2 programmes. The first is the “Juying TED-Talk Series”, which takes place during morning assembly. TED speakers prepare their own scripts and slides on the topic that relates to the theme of the week, which may cover both international and local issues. This gives students a greater awareness of the events happening around the world and in Singapore. The second is the “Juying Roving Reporters”. Student reporters get to experience of conducting interviews, and learn how to craft interview questions and get a taste of field reporting. This year, the “Juying Roving Reporters” covered the Lunar New Year Celebrations in school and the Nanyang National Day Observance Ceremony that the school participated in. They also did an interview with our Principal, Mdm Soh, which was published in the School’s SHINE Newsletter. They also interviewed the Non-Teaching Staff members to feature them in the School’s Juying Times. Our cornerstone cohort workshops, part of the school’s campaign to encourage and equip all JYians with the wherewithal and skills in public speaking and presentation, have continued to reap benefits. The customised vendorled workshops, aligned with the MOE English Language Syllabus (2010) Principle of Spiral Progression, has supported the Secondary One to Three students this year. Each cohort gets to undergo training on the basic to intermediate skills of public speaking for their presentation delivery on the school’s various platforms.

30

This year, we piloted the Talent Development Programme, which saw 20 students entering into the probationary training that was tailor-made to equip our students with the essential skills in scripting, emceeing, interviewing, improvising and public speaking. After 8 weeks of intensive and enriching training, our JYians became much more competent and confident in taking on emceeing roles in school events such as the Annual Colours Award Prize Presentation and Cohort Academic Excellence Prize Presentations. Moving ahead, our Talent Development student speakers will have more opportunities to sharpen their skills and enhance their experiences in the ambassadorship programme with Gardens by the Bay, as well as compete in the YMCA’s Plain English Speaking Awards 2018 and Anglo-Chinese Junior College’s Orator’s Trophy 2019. 2018 has been an exciting year for the school’s ALP and we look forward to even greater things to come in 2019!

Mathematics Department 2018 has been another successful year with innovative ideas in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. Math teachers continue to strive to ensure that students are able to internalise abstract mathematical concepts and apply them in problem solving. Peer assessment was piloted in a few classes and students had many opportunities to articulate their understanding of concepts. They learnt to provide quality feedback to one another using precise mathematical terms and subject vocabulary. Students also participated in the International Competitions and Assessments (ICAS) for Math and were exposed to creative problems at a higher level. We are proud to achieve 9 Distinction, 31 Credit and 14 Merit awards this year. In addition, our lower secondary Normal Technical students came in 4th in the team category of Hands-on Learning with 3D drawing the All Singapore Secondary Mathematics Competition for Normal Course.

"Let's Get Gritty!" - Secondary One Post Examination Activities OBJECTIVES The series of activities aim to hone the socialemotional competencies of students as well as enhance peer relationship. Through experiential learning, students would also build resilience as well as put the school’s R 2IGHT values to practise. The secondary one cohort was involved in fun-filled and meaningful activities such as a circus workshop, learning journeys, interest-based workshops as well as class bonding sessions during the 4-day programme. The programme ended off with a talent showcase. Through the experiential learning, students get to understand what being a gritty JYian entails – Grit = Passion + Perseverance in attaining long term goals. The cohort went on learning journeys to the Art Science Museum, National Museum and Marina Barrage.

Besides the Circus Workshop, the Secondary One cohort also took part in interest-based workshops conducted by the form teachers. Students were allocated the workshops based on their choices. The myriad skills include: i. Origami and creative napkin folding ii. Basic conversational Japanese Language iii. Diving iv. Brain-teaser games v. Introduction to Psychology (Memorising strategies) vi. Weight training vii. Scrapbooking viii. Planning a free and easy travel itinerary ix. Fact or Fiction?

During the 2-hour Circus Workshop, the Secondary One students learnt valuable circus skills from Mr Jay Che and his team from Circus In Motion. The three sets of skills learnt are namely diabolo, juggling and walking on globe. This programme instils values and social emotional competencies in students too. The training ended off with an interclass competition and showcase.

These activities aim to ignite passion and the joy of learning in the students, in the hope that they will pick up skills on their own based on their interest and keep the passion of learning going. Class Chillax time was set apart for bonding with peers and form teachers.

Secondary Two and Three TIE/VIA Programme During the June/October holidays, our Secondary Twos and Threes were involved in the Trips for International Experience (TIE) in various countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. The objectives of the trip are to develop our students in the 21st century competencies of global awareness and cross-cultural skills. Through their experience in serving the needs of children in orphanages and schools and also tackling environmental issues such as water pollution, our students have definitely grown in their self-confidence and self-directedness as well as developed into more concerned global citizens and active contributors to handle social issues around them.

Secondary Three Outward Bound Singapore (OBS)

MOE-OBS CHALLENGE PROGRAMME 2018

The September holidays was an unforgettable school holidays for our Secondary Three JYians.

As part of the National Outdoor Adventure Education Masterplan, the MOE-OBS Challenge Programme seeks to develop ruggedness, resilience, and build cohesion amongst youths. The programme comprises a series of school-based Physical Education and Character and Citizenship Education lessons facilitated by teachers as well as a 5-day expeditionary course at Outward Bound Singapore (OBS).

For five days (3-7 September), they went through an experience of a lifetime at the Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) at Pulau Ubin. During that eventful training, they experienced a variety of outdoor activities that challenged their mettle. They were able to hone their teamwork and leadership skills while surviving the elements. In the process, they also went through a selfdiscovery journey. They have returned home stronger, wiser, with grit and determination. The OBS programme was a great way to build resilience, forge teamwork and develop new friendships among students of all backgrounds from different schools.

Using the outdoors as the ‘classroom’ for learning and development, students have a unique opportunity to work together with peers from other schools and to overcome various outdoor challenges. The programme also incorporated innovative programming elements, such as new team-based challenges and expeditions around outdoor spaces within Singapore via park connectors and waterways, thereby helping students gain a deeper appreciation for our natural environment.

We hope that with the confidence and mental fortitude gained, every participant can play a leading role as an active citizen to contribute to Singapore in the future. 51

Student Leadership Development Programme/OE Transitioning from Prefectorial Board to Student Council On the 26 March 2018, Juying Secondary School Prefectorial Board officially transited to Juying Secondary School Student Council during the Student Leaders’ Investiture. Previously, our Prefectorial Board emphasised more on ensuring discipline in school and assisted in the running of day-to-day duties. With time, there was a greater desire among students to uptake more responsibilities especially in school matters, thus beginning the shift to Student Council. When informed about the transition, our Student Councillors were brimming with excitement and enthusiasm about being the voice of the JYian student body. The Executive Committee members also expressed their desire to work with other groups of Student Leaders and enable changes that benefit the student body. At the Investiture, Foong Sin Chen, the President of Student Council, envisioned that all stakeholders should work together like a gear system to propel the school to achieve great things. She emphasised that such synergism and interdependence among different stakeholders are critical to produce an impact that is greater than the sum of all parts. As Student Councillors, they, therefore, assume a more active role that enables them to be more proactive to take initiatives which can benefit the JYians and the school. The Councillors will be exposed to extensive opportunities in developing themselves in the areas of communication, collaboration, self and team management through more structured and established platforms. They will join in meetings with teachers and Principals, participate in symposiums or conventions organised by other schools and leadership workshops by top organisations. The Councillors are put into the real world to learn how different leadership skills are being utilised and, in turn, cultivate their own unique set of leadership skills.

2018 Semester 1 Student - Led Parent Teacher Conference On 25 May 2018, the parents and guardians of our students were invited to the school for the student-led Parent Teacher Conference. It was a great opportunity for parents and guardians to discuss the academic progress and character development of their child or ward. Students also shared their reflection on the areas they have done well or need to improve on. It was a great platform to see our JYians really feel empowered and take ownership of their own learning and personal development in academic studies and character development.

Local Values-in-Action (VIA) Programme

Students interacting with the senior citizens playing various board games.

During the June/October holidays, our Secondary Twos and Threes were involved in the Local Values-in-Action (VIA) programme proactively reaching out to the local community near our school. The students were actively involved in helping the residents at Boon Lay, mostly senior citizens, in the clean-up of their homes. This was followed by engaging the senior citizens in a range of interesting activities in the afternoon. Our students planned and led these activities enthusiastically. Through the interaction, the students learnt the values of responsibility, care and the importance of teamwork.

Total Defence Day 2018

Our Total Defence Day commemoration this year was split into two activities. Our first activity touched on one of the more recent threats to our survival – terrorism. For this, we conducted a massive whole-school activity where all the classes got a chance to play Guardians of the City, a Total Defence card game designed to allow students to better understand the Five Pillars of Total Defence, and how each of them play a part in keeping terrorism at bay. The game incorporates elements of competition and teamwork into a very immersive and interactive experience for the students. To increase ownership of the game, Uniformed Group cadets were also specially trained in the game beforehand, and deployed to the various classes to help the form teachers to facilitate the students learning and playing the game. During the reflection session, students shared that through working with limited resources, they learnt that there are trade-offs to every security decision, even when done with the best of intentions (for example, when people’s lives are disrupted due to tightened security measures, which may be necessary due to a heightened security risk). They also realised the power of a Galvanised People (a key card in the game), and why we all need to work together to defend Singapore. While our first activity dealt with the more recent threat of terrorism, our second activity dealt with a decades-old existential threat to Singapore – water. The school collaborated with Public Utilities Board (PUB) for this activity, which started with an assembly talk on Singapore’s precarious water situation, and how we have leveraged on technology in order to achieve water self-sufficiency.

We then conducted a water-rationing exercise, in order to let students have an experience of how inconvenient it can be not to have clean water at the turn of a tap. Although it was not a very extensive exercise, it was enough for the students to feel the pinch, and better appreciate Singapore’s clean water supply. Finally, form teachers led the students in doing a “water audit” of their own household, then they saw for themselves how much water they were using through their daily actions. Through these two activities, the students definitely gained a better appreciation of the different threats to our survival that Singapore faces, and also how each of them can play a part in better defending Singapore.

Lessons & “Music & Dance Showcase” for our Dance, Guzheng & Ukulele modules.

Learning for Life - Music & Performing Arts Overview At Juying Secondary School, our Learning for Life Programme – iACE@Juying (I Appreciate, I Create, I Exhibit my talents at Juying) seeks to plant the seed of aesthetics appreciation in all our JYians; develop their artistic abilities in the different fields of performing arts and provide them with opportunities to create and exhibit their artistic talents. Under our holistic Learning for Life Programme, JYians learn to play a musical instrument such as guzheng or ukulele; learn different dance styles such as hiphop and jazz and go on excursions to museums and watch local and international productions. It is our firm belief that every child is an artist within. Hence, it is our mission to nurture every JYian to bring out the artist in them and achieve our vision of ‘Every JYian An Artiste’. Here is what our JYians have to say about our Learning for Life Programme:

60

“I have really learnt from music and dance programmes (Learning for Life Programmes) that my school has offered. I got to choose between playing the Ukulele or Guzheng for music lessons and to learn to dance. I was really thankful for the dance lessons because they had helped to bond our class. We had really enjoyed dancing together as a class. The Ukulele programme had made me appreciate music much better and I also learn to overcome my stage fright because of dance and Ukulele programmes. I would also like to take this time to thank Mr Eddie (Ukulele Instructor) because he would always take time to teach us individually and slowly when we are not sure about the chords. I would also thank Ms Christina Ng for being so patient and kind whenever we were noisy and encouraging us when we are behaving well and putting in effort in playing the Ukulele.” MUHAMMAD SHAMEERHAFIQ BIN AZMAN, 2T1

‘Thank you for this programme. I have had an interest in dancing since young so this programme was very exciting & very fun for me.’ - KATRINA, 1A2 ‘The learning journey to the Forum Theatre at Esplanade helped me to empathise with people more.’ - ASYUHRAH, 2E1

‘LLP has benefited me a lot. I tried out different instruments. I now know the feeling on how performing on stage is like. I now have more confidence.’ MUHD ARIQ SYAZANI 2A1

We kick-started the year Battle of the captains by participating in the annual West Zone Inter-school Badminton Championship. Our ‘B’ Division girls and ‘C’ Division boys teams managed to enter the second round of the championship. It was no easy feat to be up against strong competitors but our players showed great sportsmanship.

Furthermore, we have also participated in various tournaments throughout the year to expose our players to various levels of competition and to hone their skills. One of our girls’ teams, comprising players from Secondary 1 to 3, entered the quarter-finals in the Wee Kim Wee Badminton Trophy Challenge for the first time. Besides developing our students’ passion for the sport, we also hope to cultivate values of compassion and empathy in our students. This year, our CCA participated in a values-in-action project to pack food that was distributed to needy families during Deepavali. In addition to being athletic and strong sportsmen, we hope to nurture our Badminton players into virtuous citizens of the society.

Sports - Basketball “Gather and Hands In!” Juying Basketball started year 2018 with intense focus towards a common goal – play hard till the final whistle blown. The boys have been training hard since the December holidays, from the friendly games to carnival. Their efforts paid off when the ‘B’ boys entered the second round of the West Zone Basketball Championship and eventually achieved Top 8 in the zone. Motivated by their seniors, the ‘C’ Division boys trained even harder for their West Zone Basketball Championship in July. Although they did not manage to make it to the second round, they have shown Friendly Games their improvement in every game. With that, two teams of ‘C’ boys went on to participate in the BAS Basketball Development League for greater exposure to the sport.

As mentioned by Michael Jordan, “Never say Never, Because Limits, Like Fears, Are often just an Illusion”. You and I, Together We Will Succeed. “Juying, Whoosh Whoosh Whoosh!”
