J Yians - Leaders of Tomorrow The theme for this 2017 issue is “JYians - Leaders of Tomorrow”. JYians are fortunate to be in a school that nurtures the R3IGHT VALUES and that envisions JYians being part of a Gracious Community of Lifelong Learners, with Strength of Character. This is evident in the many leadership programmes and character education lessons and informal inculcation on being self-leaders, peer leaders and leaders in the school and community. Picture yourselves, JYians, a few years into your future – which leadership role will you be in? Wisdom tells us that we become leaders not because we lead others but that we take the Lead. But, if you think you are a leader, are you sure you have followers ? More importantly, where are you leading them to? By taking the lead, we are growing and improving ourselves and our followers. Good Leaders never have to look back in regret. The 2017 Magazine hopes to have captured some of the significant moments of JYians growing and developing, aiming to be Leaders of Tomorrow ! Together We Will Succeed !

Joy of Learning @ Juying

This would be my final note as Principal of Juying Secondary after five years of leading the school alongside my very capable past and present Vice-Principals Ms Jennifer Wong, Mr Steve Ow, Mr Peter Quah, and Mdm Soh Beng Mui. Mdm Soh Beng Mui has been appointed by the Ministry of Education as the Principal-Designate of Juying Secondary and will take over the leadership baton from me while I move on to lead Crest Secondary - a Specialised School for Normal Technical students, from 15 December 2017. Over the last five years, together with our school management team and staff members, we have built a very strong staff culture where we share a common vision, mission and philosophy to make Juying Secondary an inviting place for JYians to grow and nurture into responsible ladies and gentlemen with strength of character and a passion for learning. Many of our signature Academic and Character building programmes such as the Applied Learning Programme (Oracy), Learning for Life Programme (Aesthetics), 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Leadership Programmes, just to name a few, are the results of our concerted planning and conscientious efforts put in by our staff members. Please join me to thank all my staff members who often go beyond the call of duty to ensure that the needs of your child/ward are met. With the strong support of the Juying Parents’ Support Group (JPSG) led by the past and present Chairmen, Mr Thomas Loh, Mrs June Lee, Mrs Wendy Neo, Mrs Dionne Ng, the JPSG has grown from strength to strength as evident in your strong turnouts at numerous school events – be it the CNY Lohei session, Fitness Run, Family Bonding Day, Teachers’ Day gift-making, parenting workshops, etc. For that, I am grateful for your strong partnership to make a difference not only to your child/ward, but to the many other JYians who needed that strength and support. You all are indeed awesome! I often share that Juying Secondary is a special, unique choice school for many because our teachers, staff and parents are the ones who make all the difference. I am very confident that with your strong and continuous support, together with Mdm Soh’s wealth of experiences in the various Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges, and MOE HQ, she would be in a very good position to lead Juying Secondary to greater heights in the years to come. Together, we will succeed (as in our school motto) in making Juying Secondary a great school! Thank you.

The SAC Chairman

School Advisory Committee

December 2017 marks a significant milestone in the JYian history. Not only has it been my 10th year of involvement as JYian School Advisory Committee (SAC) member, it is also sadly the year Mr Seet Tiat Hee leaves Juying Secondary School as her 4th Principal. His positive impact on Juying since December 2011 has been very significant and I am sure we will miss him dearly as he moves on to lead Crest Secondary School. The school’s academic performance had continued to improve under his Principalship and parental perception of Juying Secondary as a choice school also rose favourably. The cut-off point for admission to Secondary 1 Express is now 195 and 2017 also marks the year when Juying Secondary offered places for Direct School Admission (DSA) for the first time. Mr Seet’s strong leadership had inspired committed support from all the teachers and staff, and he has built a positive school culture where JYians can confidently develop to be Leaders of Tomorrow, which this year’s magazine has fittingly adopted as its theme. While we say Farewell to Mr Seet, we are happy to Warmly Welcome Mdm Soh Beng Mui as our new Principal. Posted to Juying Secondary in September after completing the Leadership in Education programme, Mdm Soh has seamlessly taken over the reins from Mr Seet by swiftly getting to know the JYian family and building on the excellent legacy Mr Seet has built over his five years in Juying.

The SAC hosted a farewell-cum-welcome lunch for our two School Leaders in November 2017 at the Raffles Country Club, which would give way to the construction of the Hi-Speed Railway in a few months’ time. The SAC will continue to give our strong support and work in partnership with our new Principal, Mdm Soh and her staff to mould Jyians as Leaders of Tomorrow and bring Juying Secondary School to new heights of success! Together We Will Succeed!

Outstanding Computing Teacher Award

MR RUDIE ASMARA

Mr Rudie Asmara with Rachel Quek (2E2) Jurong West Primary (2015) & Ng Jia Xuan (2E2) Boon Lay Garden Primary (2015) during an ITP micro:bit DigitalMaker session.

“What If Coding Is Your Superpower?” That is the question that Mr Rudie Asmara would like any class to think about. He then explains that coding is learnable and will be central in the future economy. Despite that, there will be many opportunities for those who are technologically proficient and equipped with the right computational thinking concepts.

He is also the curriculum developer of Juying’s Information Technology Programme (ITP). With his team of technology educators, they have successfully implemented a unique programme to develop digital fluency, computational thinking and collaborative Google Cloud proficiency for all lower secondary students.

Mr Rudie Asmara, recently awarded the MOE Outstanding Computing Teacher Award (OCTA) 2017, is a passionate educational technologist who inspires both his students and colleagues.

The programme also includes technology applications for learning such as eMindMapping, Prezi presentations, 3D modelling, personalised learning channels, MOE’s Code For Fun Programme and most recently micro:bit digitalmaker space, just to name a few.

Mr Rudie continuously demonstrates great passion as a Computing teacher. With his strong content knowledge and pedagogy, he inspires and motivates his students in the learning of Computing and its applications. On top of that, he has contributed significantly to the professional development of the teaching fraternity through sharing of valuable ICT knowledge with his colleagues and the setting up collaborative learning communities.

Juying students have profoundly benefitted from this programme allowing them to work collaboratively across Google platforms with ease, completing inter-‐ disciplinary project work and effectively harnessing technology as an enabler for their learning and cyber wellness awareness.

An a technology educator, Mr Rudie believes that all students today have to be equipped with the digital fluency to utilise any technology available to them in order to be effective, future-‐ready individuals. The Subject Head of Computer Applications (CPA), also collaborates with his fellow CPA teachers to implement an exciting CPA curriculum which includes gamification, Youtube tutorials, Scratch programming, creative vector graphic design and an increasingly dynamic baseline ICT skills.

Applied Learning Programme (ALP) VISION

Every JYIAN a confident and competent communicator using Standard English.

MISSION

To equip all JYians with lifelong learning skills, attitude, and values that competent and confident speakers should espouse, and to provide each JYian with an opportunity to showcase them.

From its inception in 2011, the Applied Learning Programme (ALP) helmed by the English Language Department has come a long way. The school’s ALP, which aims to “Develop Confident and Competent Communicators”, has a Tier 1 Programme for all classes called “Stand and Deliver”. Every student takes turns to prepare his/her speech and is scheduled to speak during his/her recess breaks at a designated area called the “Speaker’s Corner” in the canteen. This year, the school erected a stage with a podium and installed TV screens in the canteen for student speakers to showcase their live speeches. As of the end of Term 3, close to 750 students have gone through the “Stand and Deliver” programme.

Applied Learning Programme (ALP) The ALP Team piloted the Tier 2+ Programme called “Juying Roving Reporters” this year and is currently in the process of producing its second episode for the “What’s Up at Juying” series on Youtube. Four Juying reporters have been featured so far, out of the list of student enthusiasts who have expressed keenness in becoming a reporter. As part of this Tier 2+ Programme, student reporters experience how to conduct interviews, learn how to craft interview questions and get a taste of field reporting, when they cover school events. This year, the “Juying Roving Reporters” reported on the Annual Lunar New Year Celebrations in school and the Nanyang National Day Observance Ceremony in collaboration with Nanyang Community Centre. Our cornerstone cohort workshops, part of the school’s campaign to encourage and equip all JYians with the wherewithal and skills in public speaking and

Syahmi Alzam (2E1) doing his Stand & Deliver

The Tier 2 Programme called the “Juying TED-Talk Series” began this year and happens during the morning and afternoon assembly sessions. TED speakers may speak with or without slides. Teachers and prefects were featured in Semester 1, while student volunteers and department representatives were featured in Semester 2. TED speakers prepared their own scripts and slides on the topic that is related to the theme of the week. These weekly themes cover both international and local issues, and give students a greater awareness of the events happening around the world and in Singapore throughout the year. This year saw close to a total of 65 Juying TED speakers being featured, a result of the enthusiasm from students and support from the various departments.

presentation, have continued to reap benefits. The customised vendor-led workshops, aligned with the MOE English Language Syllabus (2010) Principle of Spiral Progression, has supported the Secondary One to Four/Five students this year. Each cohort undergoes training on the basic to intermediate skills of public speaking for their presentation delivery on the school’s various platforms. For example, the Secondary 3 cohort underwent training to learn how to identify their presentation focus and put together effective presentation slides to aid in their TIE/VIA trip TED-talk sharing. This is a partnership between the CCE and the ALP committee, to get students to share their insights gained from their overseas trips to the school to benefit other JYians. This year also saw a rise in the number of student emcees who have been given the opportunity to host a variety of school events. In total, about 30 student emcees from Secondary 1 to 5 were selected. The committee collaborates with Pathfinders, who are industry practitioners, to tap on their real-world knowledge and experiences. This year, the team invited Mr. Steven Chia, a veteran host and reporter from Channel News Asia, to share with students in an assembly talk on the importance of current affairs. 2017 marks the committee’s eventful and auspicious year as we embarked on two major competitions – YMCA’s Plain English Speaking Awards and AngloChinese Junior College’s Orator’s Trophy 2017, the latter for which our very own Irina Insyirah managed to vie for a place as a semi-finalist. This is an unprecedented first in our brief history. We look forward to even greater things to come in 2018!

Science

Humanities

VISION

Every JYian a self-directed learner, with an inquiring mind.

MISSION

To cultivate lifelong learners with an awareness and interest in the application of Science in their daily lives.

The Science Department strives to inculcate the joy of learning in our students by providing them with varied experiences to stimulate their curiosity and discover their interests. Through our specially - selected programmes, our students have also acquired new knowledge and skills relevant to the real world.

Talent Development Programme

Our talent development programme comprises competitions and learning journeys which cater to our students’ interests and strengths. This year, we had teams from Secondary 3NA and NT participating in two ignITE challenges. In the Mad Mocktails challenge, students put their understanding of liquid densities to the test as they concocted the most unique and delicious mocktails, by layering different juices and syrups. Teams also took part in the Derma Rouge challenge for the first time, learning the basic anatomy of the skin and types of wounds, followed by creating different types of wounds using common household items. One of the teams did us proud by making it to the finals! Besides developing the spirit of resilience and innovation in our students through these experiences, the competition even inspired some of them to be special effects make-up artists in future!

The Secondary 2 and 3E Biology students went on a learning journey to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and Chek Jawa respectively. There, they explored the ecosystems, learnt during lessons, and were fascinated by the diverse array of organisms and their adaptations to their habitats. The other Sec 3E students participated in Science Centre’s Brainfest, where they competed to solve a murder case by using their critical and analytical skills to crack puzzles and interpret clues. The Secondary 1 students explored the Future World exhibition at the ArtScience Museum, entering a futuristic world of high-tech interactive artworks and were blown away by the magic of cutting-edge digital installations.

Science Assembly Presentations

In line with our school’s Applied Learning Programme to develop competent and confident communicators, we engaged enthusiastic students to share on their learning experiences from the competitions and learning journeys they had participated in. What better way to inspire the students and spread the passion in learning Science than hearing from other passionate students themselves! We had the Secondary 4 students sharing about their ignITE challenge experience in 2017, the Secondary 2 and 3 students sharing on their learning journey to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and Chek Jawa. Although it was a first for many to do a wholeschool presentation on stage, they bravely overcame their fears with support from our dedicated Science teachers and presented confidently! Next year, we aim to have students sharing on their topic of interest related to Science.

VISION

Every JYian a Global Citizen.

MISSION

To enable JYians to be confident, socially responsible and possess an entrepreneurial spirit.

This year, four teams of Secondary four Geographers represented the school to compete in the Hospitality Race at Republic Polytechnic, in the School of Hospitality. After giving their all, all four teams qualified for the Finals, which will be taking place at Sentosa in September 2017.

‘Every JYian a Global Citizen’ is the vision of the Humanities Department. This is in line with the school’s vision of a gracious community of lifelong learners with strength of character. In building a community of gracious and lifelong learners, we envision to develop all JYians into well-informed, responsible citizens with a sense of national identity and a global perspective. We work towards engaging students actively to develop them into confident, self-directed, critical and reflective thinkers. In order to achieve these aims, it is important that students develop competence in three areas: knowledge and understanding, skills and processes, values and attitudes. We strongly believe in learning which extends beyond the four walls of the classroom and our learning journeys prove that there is no boundary to our quest for knowledge. With the whole school roped in for the Humanities Inquiry Approach, the study of Humanities subjects (Geography & History) is question-driven with reliance on evidence and knowledge construction by the students. Students become engaged learners as they take on roles as reflectors, explorers, critical thinkers, knowledge producers and reporters. It is a year filled with learning journeys organised by the Department in fulfilling the Geographical Investigation (GI) and Historical Investigation (HI) learning experiences for the students:

VISION

Every JYian a self-directed learner, innovative individual and confident team player.

MISSION

To nurture an informed awareness and appreciation of the visual arts, cultivate an inquiring mind and innovative spirit in working with materials and tools.

Every JYian a self-directed and collaborative learner through the use of IT.

MISSION

To build a pervasive culture of promoting effective use of ICT into the school curriculum to enhance pedagogy that engages collaboration and self-directed learning.

We hope to prepare JYians for tomorrow’s rapidly changing world by providing them with the opportunity to think creatively and develop entrepreneurial dare. In building a community of gracious and lifelong learners, we envision all JYIANs to believe in their own abilities, thus becoming independent learners, creative thinkers and confident team players.

The IT Department harnesses technology to provide an enriching learning experience to all JYians. We aim to promote a pervasive culture of effective use of ICT into the school curriculum to enhance pedagogy that engage collaboration and self-directed learning. In order to maximise learning moments, the following programmes are implemented:

This is in alignment with the school’s OYSTER philosophy in which we believe that every student can learn, and that our objective is to provide a nurturing environment for each JYIAN to develop creative and critical thinking skills so that they will be able to “shine and illuminate any organisation they may enter in the future” with these skills required of an effective artist, nutritionist or engineer.

IT Enrichment Programme (ITP) With the growing complexity and need for 21st century knowledge workers, MOE has prescribed a baseline ICT standard across all Singapore schools. In order to meet these required baseline ICT standards, all Lower Secondary JYians undergo a compulsory IT Enrichment Programme (ITP) which is incorporated into curriculum time.

Achievements

The strategic focus of ITP is to equip students with 21st Century Skills with the emphasis on computing and digital core competencies.

C&T department is proud to celebrate with our JYians who have done better than the national percentage distinctions and/or passes in the following subjects in the year 2016.

In addition to the bonding games, the students went through a series of sports and games and performing arts CCA auditions. Under the guidance of our teachers, the Secondary four student leaders facilitated the camp. In line with the JYian tradition, the Secondary One students were formally embraced by the JYian family during the Installation Ceremony. Every student was presented with a symbolic JYian Pearl by their Form Teacher, which indicates that each student is ready for the inculcation of the school values of R3IGHT.

1 2

In May, during the 2-day-1-night bonding camp, the students took part in the Army Open house and Climb Experience. Through these activities, the students learned the cooperative and collaborative skills for effective teamwork through experiential learning.

Secondary 3 and 4 The Secondary 3 students were encouraged to sign up for “Category A” Elective Module (EM) which was jointly organised by the ITEs. They opted for the Videography module and Mobile Robotics module. They spent four days at the ITE, mostly involved in hands on activities. The Secondary 4 students opted for Automotive Engineering Elective Module. Students had a feel of Go Karting, Motion Driving Simulators, learning journeys and career prospects related to the industry.

Secondary Two R3IGHT Adventure Camp

Secondary 3 R3IGHT Programme (TIE/VIA Trip)

The outdoor adventure camp aimed to nurture in our students the following:

As part of the Secondary 3 R3IGHT Camp this year, the Secondary 3 students embarked on their TIE/VIA trip to various Southeast Asian countries, in order to develop their global awareness and cross-cultural skills through exposure to other countries and cultures, thereby deepening their commitment and rootedness to Singapore.

The ability to • exhibit the R3IGHT values of respect and responsibility for self and others, resilience and teamwork. • develop 21st century competencies such as communication and interpersonal skills to build and manage relationship with others. • build class spirit and friendship, and establish positive teacher-student relationships through outdoor adventure learning.

As in 2016, the students undertook the conceptualisation, research and planning for their own TIE/VIA trips, facilitated by their form teachers, in order to learn more about a particular social issue agreed upon by the entire class. As students themselves, many classes chose to focus on youth and education related issues around the region.

The Secondary 2 Adventure Camp was held at MOE Labrador Outdoor Adventure Learning Centre from 26 to 28 May 2017. There were 2 sets of outdoor activities – water and high/low elements. The activities such as dragon-boating, kayaking, caving, zip line and challenge course emphasise the building cohort dynamic, class unity and teamwork. Prior to the camp, the class committee leaders and prefects led their class in preparing the class cheer and involved all their classmates in the 7-minute performance for the campfire. The Secondary 2 JYians displayed their enthusiasm when they put up their upbeat class performances during the campfire. The parents and guests who came to support the camp participants went home feeling happy and in equally high spirits. 1

Student Leadership Development

VISION

Every JYian a Values-Driven Leader.

MISSION

To develop confident, compassionate, competent and committed student leaders who serve the school, community and nation.

Staying in line with our vision of every JYian a valuesdriven leader, we entered 2017 with a list of programmes catered to further develop our student leaders in the area of self-directedness and entrepreneurial dare. Our March and June holiday workshops conducted by our own teachers were centered upon student leaders taking up responsibilities in helping the school and community. Secondary Three student leaders were heavily involved in the planning of their own VIA project based on their choice of audience while Secondary Two student leaders embarked on their service learning journey as part of ‘The Ripple Effect’ initiative.

Student Leaders’ Investiture

Juying Secondary held its 3rd Student Leaders’ Investiture on the 21st of March 2017 to celebrate the inauguration of the next batch of student leaders taking on their respective leadership roles in their classes, CCAs and the Prefectorial Board. Symbiosis, which signifies the interdependence between the student body and student leaders, is the theme for this year. Angel Tan, the newly elected Head Prefect of 2017, reminded the school that not only can the student body support the student leaders, but also that the student leaders can learn from the student body.

1

Speech by Head Prefect

‘The Ripple Effect’ is a student-led initiative which provides opportunities and a platform for students to champion ideas and initiatives on areas they are passionate about. More significantly, this initiative allows the theme of ‘Dare to dream’ and entrepreneurial dare to be visible amongst our students. Our SLD programme will continue to develop each JYian into a values-driven leader whose decisions are strongly influenced by the school’s R3IGHT values for the future.

CCA Leaders

In the presence of the entire school, the Class Leaders were first presented with their leadership badges by their Form Teachers, followed by the CCA Leaders receiving their leadership badges on stage. The Prefects then had a walk-in ceremony into the hall and trooped up stage to receive their badges personally from the school leaders.

Student Well Being

Student Well Being

Student-led Parent Teacher Conference (Mid-Year) In the presence of the form teachers, the students presented their academic progress and character development to their parents. This platform empowered the students to reiterate their goals, share their reflection on the areas that they have done well or need to improve on, and finally their plans to do better. This conference is beneficial for parents as well when they witness how their child has assumed greater ownership in his/her progress and development.

Academic Excellence Recognition Ceremony The Academic Excellence Recognition Ceremony(AERC) is held annually, by level, to recognise the hard work and achievements put in by our students over the past year. The ceremonies that are held by level, enhance the connectedness between prize winners, parents and their fellow cohort. The Academic Excellence Recognition Ceremonies were planned strategically in conjunction with an address by Mr Seet to the parents for a specific purpose. For the Secondary Two level, AERC was delivered with a talk on streaming on the Upper Secondary subjects by the various Heads of Departments – Craft and Technology, Humanities, Math and Science. Whilst for the Secondary Three level, AERC was conducted together with the TIEVIA Overseas trips presentations. The AERC for Secondary Four and Five was delivered together with the release of the students’ Mid-Year results as it was a good opportunity to help the students bridge the learning gaps over the June holidays.

Total Defence Day

Total Defence Day was commemorated to mark Singapore’s fall to the Japanese in 1942. This day reminds our students that Singapore is defensible, is worth defending and we ourselves must defend Singapore. In Juying Secondary School, we had lessons facilitated by teachers with a section on ‘A Plan to Protect’. This lesson provides a safe space for students to discuss their thoughts and feelings about terrorist threats in the world today. The Secondary Four students were involved in a Total Defence strategy card game – Guardians of the City (GOTC). This provided a hands-on experience for students to deepen their understanding of Total Defence beyond conceptual frameworks, learn about the threat environment we are in and also how we can all play a part to keep Singapore safe and secure.

Chinese New Year Celebration

On 27th January 2017, students and staff gathered together in the school hall to celebrate Chinese New Year. The event was graced by our MP for Choa Chu Kang GRC (Nanyang constituency), Mr Yee Chia Hsing. The Mother Tongue Department put together several entertaining cultural performances to welcome the Year of the Rooster. The cultural dance, guzheng and crosstalk performances certainly added a festive mood to the entire concert. This year is also the first year in which the Chinese New Year video-making competition was held. Many classes produced creative and humorous videos that enthralled the audience.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration

Darian (3E2) and Safi (3E3) hosted the Hari Raya Celebration

Students and staff of Juying Secondary School welcomed Hari Raya Aidilfitri by enjoying a mini concert that was put up by our very own JYIAN students and teachers, and our Cultural Dance Group members. This year, we were fortunate to have visitors from Jiangyin Junior Middle School to join in the celebration together with our JYians. Our emcees, Darian Logan (3E2) and Safi Arinah (3E3) livened up the atmosphere for a funfilled celebration with humour, charm and smiles. We kicked off the concert with a dance item from our Cultural Dance Group. Besides hosting, they also shared on the Do’s & Don’ts when visiting our Muslim friends during Hari Raya. The festive mood was further boosted by the melodious singing of Misha Akilah & Nur Arafah Nadrah from 3E2. The concert ended with our teachers who sportingly adorned the traditional Malay costumes, singing a Hari Raya song for the concert’s finale.

National Day Observance Ceremony @Nanyang

This year, we celebrated National Day together with the Nanyang Community Centre and the residents and schools in the Nanyang Constituency. As the only secondary school in the constituency, we took on a key role in the event, leading various key components including road marshalling of the Harmony Walk and formation of the human giant birthday cake. Besides coming together to celebrate the nation’s birthday, there was also a wonderful spirit of giving with each participant bringing along a canned food item to be donated to needy residents, serving an important reminder to all staff and students on how we can all play a part in contributing back to the community. 1

For the 3rd consecutive year, our annual Fitness Run was successfully held at Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC) & SAFTI Military Institute. This year, a total of 42 parents joined the teachers and students to complete the 2.4km route. The atmosphere was constantly filled with the thunderous roar from our students, as they competed in the inter - House cheering competition. This year, the Rockies and the Andes cohorts emerged as the winners of the cheer competition. With respect to the race timing, the Rockies cohort also won the overall championship for the Fitness Run. The SDC guided tour through the racial harmony exhibits was an enriching and meaningful experience for everyone to understand the importance of understanding and respecting racial and cultural differences within a society.

Our Nutz Crew has done us proud again this year by clinching the Silver Award for the YellowRen Modern Dance Competition. Nutz Crew was also awarded with Merit in the SYF Arts Presentation 2017. However, winning competitions is not our main priority. The skills learnt and values instilled is far more vital and will nurture our dancers to become a better person who will contribute to the society. Nutz Crew has also participated in competitions such as DanceWorks! 2017. They demonstrated strong resilience by competing with older youths during these competitions. Through joining DanceWorks! 2017, they have become anti-drug ambassadors and will not tolerate any forms of drug abuse including smoking and alcohol consumption. 6

Here is what our JYians have to say about our Learning for Life Programme: ‘I had learnt to be confident when I dance because I must show the energy in my performance. Most importantly I must be “thick skinned” and not to fear to make mistakes in front of a crowd.’ - Ash, 1E1

‘I enjoyed the learning journey to Esplanade. It helps to boost my self-esteem as it made me be aware that even men could take part in the dance performance and not to be shy about it.’ - Andrew, 2E2

‘I really like the chorus ‘Whoop Whoop”. Although the dance is challenging but I had overcome the difficulties. I can dance now.’ - Batrisyia, 1T1

‘The learning journey to the dance performance at Esplanade has help to develop my sense of responsibility as I am now aware how to behave in such cultured venues.’ - Lee Xuan, 2E2

Nutz Crew was also invited for the 4th year to perform for the River Hong Bao Chinese New Year Performance at The Float @ Marina. Through such invited performances and winning competitions, Nutz Crew has donated the

amount of prize money to the needy students in Juying Secondary School. This is an example on how they contribute to the Juying family who has always been giving them the support and encouragement. To provide learning opportunities for all, they were actively involved in school events such as the Teachers’ Day Performance. Several bonding activities have also been organised to foster a stronger sense of camaraderie amongst the dancers. This included attending Singapore’s most celebrated outdoor dance event, Ballet Under the Stars. 1

Cultural Dance

The Cultural Dance has been actively involved in school and outdoor performances with a variety of dance styles including Chinese Contemporary, Jazz Dance, K-Pop and Modern dance. This was made possible with the care and guidance of the CCA teachers-in-charge, Mdm Diyana, Ms Ho Sing Ern, Ms Chen Yonghua, and Ms Li Jing. Most notably, our instructor, Ms Teng Ru Hui, had coached our dancers on relevant dance skills, knowledge and choreography. The students develop their understanding of the basic dance skills through the varied dance styles that help them to structure and strengthen their knowledge of dances.

Through this camp, students learn more about one another and learn to respect other ethnicities and religions. It also provides the opportunity for students to display their graciousness by looking out for others and being exposed to cultural dance knowledge through teamwork and sharing. The Cultural Dance continuously acts as a platform that supports and further develops the character building of students in Juying Secondary School.

Choir

National Cadet Corps (Sea) 2017 has been a significant year for our NCC (Sea) coeducational unit. From the effort and perseverance injected by our cadets and officers, NCC unit attained the Silver Award in the Annual Best Unit Competition (BUC), maintaining the standards set in the previous year. This year, our very own Precision Drill Squad (PDS) attended a course conducted by NCC HQ which enabled them to choreograph their first performance for the Nanyang National Day Celebration dinner, commemorating our nation’s 52nd birthday. The team exhibited teamwork and resilience as they entertained the guests with a fancy drill showcase.

Activities for 2017 includes: 1

1) Cadets achieving the Movement (SKM) Badge

2017 has been a significant and remarkable year for our Choir because we made the commitment to challenge ourselves. From the beginning of the year, we were determined to participate in both the SYF as well as B-dazzled Show Choir Competition 2017. SYF took place in April while B-dazzled was held in July. Our biggest challenge lies in not having adequate time to practise for the B-dazzled competition after SYF as both events were only three months apart. After discussions between teachers and students from the Choir, we agreed unanimously to increase the frequency of our training from twice weekly to three times a week starting from January. One out of the three weekly practice sessions was devoted to prepare for the B-dazzled competition. The practice routines were not easy. After all, the nature of SYF and B-dazzled competitions is vastly different. SYF focuses on choral quality and students need to be able to sing in unison. On the other hand, for B-dazzled, students’ movements have to be in-sync and wellcoordinated while singing melodiously. Despite the trials and challenges, the Choir students displayed resilience and persevered till the end. They supported one another to overcome challenges by continuously reminding each other of the steps, timing, formation as well as dance movement. They learnt to care and help one another to polish their skills. When we finally accomplished the two major goals of performing in the SYF and B-dazzled competitions, the Choir turned into a big and warm family. In our CCA, everyone cares for one another. We have come a long way. What matters is not the outcomes of competitions, but our memorable journey together.

3

We would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to everyone who have supported our students in ensuring they have received the highest possible chance of success. National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC)

English Language Drama & Debating Society

National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC) was introduced to the school in 2007 and aims to develop each cadet into a responsible and civic-minded citizen. The CCA sessions also provide a platform to nurture and mould the leadership skills in every cadet. 2017 was a momentous year as the unit has made great strides forward and celebrated several achievements. The unit was first awarded Gold for the NCDCC Unit Overall Performance Award (UOPA) which is an evaluation of the overall performance of the school unit’s system, processes and active involvement of both cadets and teacher officers. We are also proud to announce that Warrant Officer Md Putera Alfian Bin Abdul Rashid and Lim Bi Wang were awarded the SCDF-NCDCC Pinnacle badge which is the highest accolade given to the most outstanding cadets who display exceptional leadership qualities and have made extensive contributions to their units and HQ NCDCC at the national level.

‘I choose to be incomplete until I figure this out.’ - ‘Box’, a play ELDDS adapted for our entry for Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2017. This year, albeit armed with little experience, ELDDS bravely participated in the SYF for the very first time. After months of grueling practice, ELDDS obtained an Accomplishment award, with a script that focused on students’ daily struggle of fitting in and truly finding meaning within their own lives. 1

After the SYF, the members continued to be involved in weekly intensive drama sessions with their instructor to hone their drama skills, build their confidence and competencies in stage performances.

1

The next highlight of the year is the unit’s participation in the Precision Drill Competition (PDC) where cadets spent several months preparing to showcase a selfchoreographed precision drill performance to display their creativity and precision in the execution of foot drills synchronised to the rhythm of the music. As the nation celebrates 50 years of National Service (NS), LCP Andrew Tan was selected to represent NCDCC as part of the NS50 contingent during the Chingay parade this year to showcase our appreciation for the contributions by national servicemen and to highlight the importance of Singaporeans’ continued support for NS. Several cadets from the unit were given the honour to be part of the Guard of Honour contingent in the NCDCC Day Parade 2017. The selected cadets persevered through the numerous training sessions and took pride in their participation in the prestigious parade.

LJ to National Art Gallery

For some, art is a hobby, for others, art is a way of life. In Juying Art Club, we provide an opportunity for students to maximise their sense of creativity and critical thinking, as well as broaden their mind in appreciating visual art.

3

We also aim to broaden their aesthetic skills through a learning journey to National Gallery Singapore or to an art workshop about food clay art! This year, as part of their VIA project, we had the opportunity to collaborate with Nanyang Community Centre, creating pieces of artwork called “Plank Art”. Students get to create pieces of artwork that symbolises the different occupations available in Singapore, regardless of race, gender and religion.

4 5

The Green Club engages its members on environmental awareness in a fun and meaningful way through structured programmes and activities that encourage and empower students to make a difference on planet earth for generations to come. The Lower Secondary Green Club members are dedicated in looking after and maintaining the plants and green areas of our school on a regular basis. They are also responsible for beautifying other areas in the school, including the staff toilets and taking charge of the Green Wave 2017 event. This year, to celebrate the Green Wave 2017, our Vice Principal, Mr Peter Quah, had planted a Guava sapling plant near the security guard post.

The Media Technology Club provides a platform for students to pick up knowledge and skills in the domains of audiovisual, robotics, Chinese chess and photography.

walked away with both the Gold and Silver awards. The tenacity of the teams did not stop there as they also clinched Gold in the 2017 Inter-School Picomouse Competition.

In the Audio Visual and Public Address domain (AV/ PA), students undergo rigorous on-the-job training while supporting activities and events. Our training includes equipment orienteering, handling and troubleshooting, technical handling tests, teambuilding (Lower Secondary) and manpower management (Upper Secondary). In an effort to mould future leaders, the current President, Vice President and EXCO of the club are given the autonomy to run CCA training under the watchful eyes of the teachers-in-charge who facilitate the CCA.

In Chinese Chess, students attend each session to learn the manoeuvres and counter-moves on the chessboard. With the routine and structure as well as the intimate nature of the sessions, our student players can hone their skills in a safe environment while interacting and getting to know their opponents cum team members well. With the targeted training and help from their chess coach, 40% of the members managed to clinch Bronze trophies in the Yuhua Cup this year.

In the Computing, Robotics and Enterprise (CRE-8) domain, students are trained to programme and debug a picomouse through theory and practical lessons. Each year, teams are sent to participate in various picomouse competitions. One such example was the StrITwise Hackathon @ Ngee Ann Poly where 64 secondary students participated in an overnight Hackathon where they pitted their programming skills against one another to build the most innovative and creative game over 2 days and 1 night. Two teams from our CRE-8 Robotics Club, wowed the judges with their Python programming skills and walked away with the 2nd Prize. In the Singapore Robotics Games 2017, our intrepid teams seamlessly won the judges over and

In the photography domain, students are trained to effectively utilise a myriad of photography skills to aid them in taking stunning pictures during school and external events. Students also get the opportunity to try out different camera models from our DSLR range, along with specialised lenses. These skills are also refined when students get the opportunity to attend photography workshops such as the VJC-Canon Photography Exposé VIII held in 2016. Through means of providing support for the school and participation in competitions, students are able to put into practice the school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork.

2017 has been remarkable for Juying Secondary School’s Badminton Team. We kick-started the year by participating in the annual West Zone Inter-school Badminton Championship. Our ‘C’ Division girls had managed to enter the second round of the championship for the first time. It was no easy feat to be up against strong competitors but our girls showed great sportsmanship. Furthermore, we have also participated in various tournaments throughout the year to expose our players to various levels of competition and to hone their skills. Several of our ‘B’ Division players have medaled in the Decathlon Tampines West CSC Badminton Tournament. Low Jun Kai, Isaiah (3E2) clinched Champion of Boys U14 Singles, Teoh Ci Sin (3A1) clinched Runners Up for Girls U16 Singles, and both Lim You Jun (3E3) and Jay Pang Wei Ler (3E1) clinched Second Runners Up for Boys U14 Singles. Besides developing our students’ passion for the sport, we also hope to cultivate values of compassion and empathy in our students. This year, our CCA will be participating in a values-inaction project to pack food that will be distributed to needy families during Deepavali. In addition to being athletic and strong sportsmen, we hope to nurture our Badminton players into virtuous citizens of the society.

Basketball

Football

2017 has been a fruitful year for Juying Basketball Club. The year started with the ‘B’ Division boys taking part in the National Schools Basketball Championship in January, which they had been preparing for intensively since the December holidays. The boys displayed strong resilience and teamwork when faced with strong opponents. Although they did not manage to make it to the second round, they managed to clinch the “Fair Play” award, which is awarded to the team that demonstrated sportsmanship throughout the whole tournament. Encouraged by the award, the boys continued to take part in the BAS Basketball Development League and played with more confidence in every game. Motivated by their seniors, the ‘C’ Division boys trained even harder for their National Schools Basketball Championship in July. Nearing to the competition, a few friendly games with other schools were organised and the seniors helped out enthusiastically with a common goal. Their efforts paid off when the ‘C’ Division boys entered the second round for the first time in 11 years and managed to emerge as Top 10 in the West Zone.

2 1

The boys have truly demonstrated the 5 aspirations of a JYian Basketballer:

1

3

1. I am not a JYian Basketball player. I am a JYian LEADER who happens to play basketball. 2. Our hearts have to be in whatever we do. 3. During critical periods, a leader is not allowed to feel sorry for himself, to be down, to be angry or to be weak. We must beat those emotions. 4. Discipline is doing what we are supposed to do, in the best possible manner, at the time we are supposed to do it.

2

4

5. Communication, trust, collective responsibility, care and pride are the 5 fundamental qualities that make a great team. Each is like a separate finger on a fist, individually important but unbeatable when together.

Juying netballers had a busy schedule in 2017. At the start of the year, the girls competed in the West Zone Netball Championship that was organised by Singapore Sports School, from January to February. After the championship, while our Secondary 4 and 5 girls bid farewell to the team to prepare for their national examinations, selected Juying netballers participated in the Level 1 Umpiring Course which was essential and useful in equipping the girls with not only skills in playing netball but also understanding ground rules and umpiring matches. These skills were later brilliantly exhibited by these girls during the M1 Challenge and Active Carnival that was organised by Netball Singapore. Besides that, Juying netballers also participated in a variety of friendly matches with other schools to polish their skills as well as to establish rapport with fellow netballers. Our girls may not have had the wealth of achievement this year but they definitely had fun and fruitful experiences in 2017!

JPSG has always been supportive and actively involved in many school events such as the Annual Fitness Run and Teacher’s Day Celebration. In addition, parents are always ready to come forward and organise meaningful activities to foster a strong relationship between the school, families and other parents. Our annual parent-initiated activities include Family Bonding Day, Teachers’ Day Gift-making, and Sandwich-Making for the graduating students sitting for their GCE O-Level examination. These activities send a positive message to our children that we take an interest in their education.

The SWC looks not only into the well-being of the staff of JYSS, but we also ensure that our Juying Family does its part to give back to society. In November 2016, the SWC organised a staff VIA session at the NTUC home where we worked with the elderly to paint ceramic elephant figurines. These figurines were then auctioned and the proceeds were donated to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (STPMF). In February 2017, a Chinese New Year Lo Hei was carried out for all staff to celebrate the occasion together. To take a break from our hectic schedules, we also helped organise a Durian Fiesta in school for the second year running. Our gracious sponsors from the School Advisory Committee arranged for the durian vendor to come in directly from Malaysia, to the school for a durian feast! In September, educators were treated to a scrumptious dinner at Tung Lok, Arena Country Club, where we

celebrated our Teachers’ and EAS’ Day. The theme, “Glamourous in Black & White” encouraged teachers to turn up in their best, was chosen in consultation via staff votes. We have also given out “I3” (Inspiring Learning, Impacting Lives and Inculcating Values) and R3IGHT” (Responsible, Resilience, Respect, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork) Awards to affirm staff during Teachers’ Day Dinner. Our talented teachers also conducted classes for all staff as postexam activities. The SWC has also organised a series of Sales@Lounge for the staff to indulge in some retail therapy. We have also implemented the fortnightly “Fruit Day” to encourage healthy eating among staff. In addition, we have also rewarded staff on “No MC Day” by giving out packets of Milo.

Dear JYians (Old Boys, Old Girls), Juying Secondary School values every student – both past and present. In our midst, we have more than 125 JYians who have updated their contact particulars with us at our JYian portal and have kept the valuable relationship strong. The objectives of setting up the JYian Alumni is to present opportunities for JYian family members to bond and network. It also serves as a good platform for our Alumni members to contribute your effort and show concern for JYians who need all the guidance and care they can get. To encourage more partnership, we have created a new Facebook account and the first bonding session will be held during the school’s Teachers’ Day celebration. We hope you will join us in such bonding sessions. Always Remember: Once a JYian Always a JYian! Principal Juying Secondary School
