THE VISION OF NEWTOWN Institution: Delft University of Technology Type: Masterâ€™s graduation project Location: Naujamiestis, Vilnius Tutors: R.Nottrot, J. van der Voort, P. Stouten Year: 2014/01 - 2014/11 Many urban spaces during the course of time have lost their intended semantics, identities and representations, and might therefore be defined as post-spaces of various kinds, for example post-industrial, post-Soviet, post-Modernist, etc. In many cases these post-spaces require restructuring not only of their meaning and identity, but also of their functions and urban life. The socialist mass-housing neighbourhoods could be taken as a good example of such case.
In this project the specific attention is given to urban living environment, mainly focusing on a socialist mass-housing quarter located in a formal industrial territory in Naujamiestis district in Vilnius. Many of these residential areas were built over fifty years ago and have not been modernised ever since. Therefore they do not correspond to todayâ€™s demands in terms of physical state of housing, quality of inside and outside spaces, etc. This thesis project is based on a hypothesis that the redevelopment of public space of this particular residential environment could act as a catalyst for urban regeneration. Master thesis is a research and design project. Research is focused on the identification of the major urban issues and development of urban renewal strategy of the postsocialist housing area. Design part is aimed at proposing an architectural intervention that could contribute to districtâ€™s current transformation from industrial territory to creative district and revitalise its public space by introducing new urban scenarios and attracting more diversity in terms of residents, activities and lifestyles.
The master plan includes new green stripe (park) and public axis (boulevard). Central element of the proposal is the mixed use building consisting of live+work dwellings that provide space for young creative businesses (workshops and studios) and additional commercial space that facilitates missing functions of everyday life (shops, eating-out places,etc.). The target group is young creative people, therefore flexible and affordable housing is suggested. Both the public axis and the park provide continues experience that leads through the building to its central square. The building itself is organised in a way that the most public place is on the ground level, whereas going up the level of privacy gradually increases.

The building acts as a central node located at the intersection of two roads, namely the main axis and the green stripe. It can be accessed via gates reaching the main square or from the park entering the building on the first floor. The
picture shows squareâ€™s activity during a low season - it can be actively used and attract local residents throughout winter too.

In the design of outer facade emphasis is placed on natural and sustainable materials. Outer facade is designed as a contrast to existing all-concrete buildings, bringing ‘softer and warmer’ materials to the area. 1 Larch wooden panels

HYBRID BUILDING Institution: Delft University of Technology Type: Master 2nd semester project Location: The Hague, Netherlands Tutors: M.Hartevelt Year: 2013/04 - 2013/06 The Central station and new multifunctional buildings next to it are already attracting a large amount of people everyday. However, educational complex (The Royal Library, National Archives, Literature Museum and Netherlands Music Institute) with public space around it is not playing any important role in the process of revitalization of Bezuidenhout area, even though it has a huge potential to involve people and create a pleasant urban environment.
As world is becoming more and more digitalised, a perception of public library should change as well. More openness and exposure to wider society should be introduced and its public space should be given new identity.
Firstly, the missing link between Theresiastraat and The Central station is re-created by introducing a new â€œhigh-laneâ€? - straight and unobstucted link from point A to point B. The visual connection is gained by demolishing a part of existing entrance of the Royal Library and creating continues glazed facade, that introduces a notion of openness and improves public accessibility. The covered passageway with integrated digital screens attempts to build a quite interesting layer in the city for cultural information such as up-coming events, agendas and timetables. This transitional spot enables various cultural organisations - theatres, cinemas, museums, art galleries, etc. - to promote themselves and catch people`s attention. The added value is achieved and space becomes beneficial to its surroundings. Secondly, underused public space in front of The Royal Library is transformed into a new public square. It is elevated from street level so passers-by could feel that they are entering different space - a place to stop. Green hills in the square bring back human scale and by obstructing straight visual connections invite citizens to stay.

RESET/RESTORE Institution: Delft University of Technology Type: Master 1st semester project Location: Rotterdam, Netherlands Tutors: L.Hrsak, D.van den Heuvel Year: 2012/09 - 2013/01 Everywhere around us there are examples of apartment buildings that seem to have outlived their natural lives. They have deteriorated into a pitiful state and do not comply with present day life style demands. Yet, simply tearing down these buildings is no longer a preferred solution. From the point of view of sustainability, attempts should be made to salvage and reuse them.
The project aims to investigate the possibility of reusing and reprogramming a defunct apartment building. At the corner of the Westzeedijk and the Schiedamsedijk in Rotterdam, an area called Vasteland, several buildings offer themselves for an intensive make-over. Design assignment is to transform and reprogram one of the Vasteland apartment buildings into a contemporary icon of living in the heart of Rotterdam. Central to the assignment is the relationship between program, space, load bearing structure and services. How do modern life styles differ from those of the past, which spatial organizations cater for these life styles and how are they to be reconciled with the existing structure and services?

ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND THEATRE Institution: Vilnius Art Academy Type: Bachelor graduation project Location: Žvėrynas, Vilnius Tutors: A. Burba Year: 2011/01 - 2011/06 The territory is located in the Western part of Vilnius, in a district originally called Zverynas. The site is surrounded by Vytautas street from the West and Mickevicius street from the North, therefore well accessible by any type of transportation or on foot.
Considering the characteristics of current relief and a prevailing typology of district’s urban development, small, scatterred volumes strongly related to human scale are suggested for the site. Along streets volumes are situated in a perimetric way, as it is typical in the district. In the center of the site building units are smaller, more scattered thus creating inner spaces for recreation, public events (amphitheatre) and openings for panoramic views of a river. Volumes are integrated into the relief so that green roofs could be used as terraces. Another recreational zone is created along the riverside, by transforming it into a public park accessible for all citizens, considering the shortage of green zones within the district. Academy of music and theatre consists of the main academic block (with general learning, performing and music classes, rehearsal space and audiovideo studio), library block, Academy canteen and the main theatre for public performances. As an extension of the theatre the amphitheatre is designed for summer events.

THE BOOKSTORE Institution: Universidad Politecnica de Valencia Type: Bachelor 5th semester project Location: Valencia, Spain Tutors: P. Selles Cantos Year: 2009/09 - 2009/12 The task of the project is to redesign an old furniture changing its function to a bookstore. The site is located in the centre of Valencia, on the ground floor of a residential building.
A bookstore is a place where people come to buy a book or seek after some peaceful moments of reading. The challenge is to create an interior which is simple, clear and functional, but at the same time offers different zones and activities easily accessible to customers. Therefore the area is divided into several areas, such as the main exposition and reading zones, internet access, media and press, as well as, into three levels of height.
The interior is designed of cube shapes emerging from ceiling and floor used as tables and shelves for book exposition, lamps or places to sit down. In the bookstore books are stored and presented for customers at the same time. Some books are presented for exposition on/in their delivery boxes using them as tables. The interior is kept simple and somewhat casual, however always changing.

FAMILY HOUSE Institution: Vilnius Art Academy Type: Bachelor 3rd semester project Location: Žvėrynas, Vilnius Tutors: A. Burba Year: 2008/09 - 2008/12 The site is located in the suburbs of Vilnius, in recently developed residential area called Bendoriai. The house and its surroundings such as terrace, sauna building and swimming pool are designed for a family of four and planned according to their daily needs. Clear and laconic geometry and focus on building’s functionality are the most important characteristics. The house is designed by intersecting two rectangular volumes thereby creating two distinct zones: one for daytime activities and work (consisting of sitting, dining, cooking and working zones) and another for overnight rest and comfort. Interior layout is reasonable and convenient: taking into account a path of the sun throughout the day kitchen and dining room are located in the east, living room with terrace in the south, work room in the west, entrance, garage and utility room in the north. On the upper floor separate rooms ensures privacy for each member of the family. The yard with leisure facilities is fenced from the north side avoiding street noises and creating privacy. The family’s life is closed from the street and neighbours, but at the same time it is completely open to the forest.
