Coming Soon Folk Songs from Southern Africa Vol. 1: Secular South African Vol. 2: Sacred South African These collections are the result of the collaborative efforts of the Wits Choir from Johannesburg, South Africa, Dalene Hoogenhout, conductor, and the Wingate University Singers, Kenney Potter, conductor. These teaching resources contain folk songs and include pronunciation guides, an instructional DVD, and reproducible transcriptions.

Wingate University, traditionally ranked as one of the “best values” in the South by U.S. News & World Report, serves more than 3,000 students on three campuses in Wingate, Charlotte and Hendersonville, N.C. Founded in 1896, the University offers 35 undergraduate majors, 37 minors and career concentrations, numerous preprofessional programs, graduate degrees in business, accounting, education, physician assistant studies and sport administration, and doctorates in pharmacy, physical therapy and education. With a 14 to 1 student/teacher ratio, Wingate students gain the tools and support needed to excel in academics and apply that learning toward an extraordinary career and life.

Choral Music Through regional and international concert tours, the Wingate University Choirs are recognized for excellence in musical artistry. With four choirs available to music majors and non-majors, every student at Wingate is offered a place to sing and is encouraged to make music performance a vital part of their undergraduate liberal arts education. This singing experience is rooted in a varied repertoire that represents Western and nonwestern musical traditions, American sacred music, gospel and spirituals, folk songs, and hymns. Committed to global education, the choirs have travelled to South Africa and to the Baltic countries of Estonia and Latvia where they received Grand Prix honors at the Pärnu International Choral Festival. Participation in University Singers, Chamber Choir, Women’s Choir, and Men’s Choir encourages the students to engage vocally, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as they rehearse and perform. In turn, the singers strive to inspire and engage their listeners’ minds, souls, and spirits through informed, artistic performance. Wingate University strongly believes that the performing arts are an important element of a comprehensive collegiate education. Our vocal and instrumental music programs promote interdisciplinary learning and assist in the development of the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. The participating students, which represent dozens of academic disciplines, enjoy an enriched experience and broadened global perspective. For more information, visit http://www.wingate.edu.
