2012 PBR World Finals story by Cindy O’Neall photos by Mandy Burns

I have been fortunate enough to attend most of the past PBR World Finals Events. The 2012 Event was one of the most exciting, intense and emotional so far. It was exciting because this year featured some of the best bull power ever assembled at one event. Per JW Hart, the 1st performance was the strongest pen of bulls he has ever seen. It was intense for the fans at the event as well as the ones at home hoping their favorite cowboy would prevail. Emotions ran high as fans and fellow competitors watched as Chris Shivers made his last rides. On opening night it appeared it was going to be a tough weekend when only 6 of the top cowboys covered their bulls. Thursday night things changed however when Chris Shivers proved he still had it by winning the round 4 Just Bucking News

with an 89.75 ride. Fans went wild and it appeared maybe Chris could pull off a Finals win his last year. Friday night the crowd was ecstatic as Shivers turned in a 90.75 round win again on Shepherd Hills Sod Buster with Luke Snyder chasing him with a 90

point ride. Later that night in a press conference with Chris and Luke, Luke stated how much of an honor it was to be sitting there with Chris and that anytime you have someone like Chris Shivers nipping at your heels you are never safe. Luke also said he was enjoying the heck out of this and he could not

stress enough how much of an honor it was to be sitting there with Chris. Chris said he had 3 rides left in him and he was going to give it all he had until Sunday night then turn it over to the rest of the guys. Shivers cowboyed up and picked Chicken on a Chain. There was not a dry eye in the house Sunday as Chris made his last 2 rides. Things did not go his way but he still showed his true championship style that made us all fans. One of the most loyal Shivers fans I know said she was never a bull riding fan until 1997. She saw Chris ride on TV at a relative’s house. She has been a Chris Shivers and PBR fan every since. One thing she did point out that made her a fan was that no matter how Chris did he always acknowledged and tipped his hat to his fans in appreciation. Several years ago I had the honor of picking Chris up at the airport and taking him to

2012 PBR World Champion Silvano Alves

do some promo events. He admitted that he hated to be on the road and away from his family but the love of the sport and his fans made it worth it. After the finals Chris is going to settle down on his ranch in Louisiana where he has approximately 1000 head of yearlings and 200 head of momma cows that he wants to focus on. He also plans to continue to support the mini bull youth program. He feels strongly that this is something great for the kids and gives them an opportunity to ride for a lot more money then he ever got to ride for & is safer for the kids. So it looks like Chris will be giving back to his sport in his own special way. As the 2012 finals came to a close the Brazilians would once again prevail. For the third year in a row they have swept the top honors. In the past 3 years the Brazilian team has been very impressive by winning the World Championship, World Finals, and Rookie of the Year. Going into the Saturday night round

Robson Palermo was sore and banged up but he did not let that stop him from winning the round. Afterward he told us that with some ice and a little help from Dr. Tandy he felt good. Robson was very proud to have won the World Finals 3 times ( 2008, 2011, 2012 ). He plans to take some time after the finals to return to Brazil to see his family. Mainly though to focus on is right shoulder with therapy and possible surgery. When Robson was asked how he felt about retiring after he watched Chris Shivers this weekend, he

replied, “I love Chris and I am going to miss him a lot and I cried each time they did a deal for Chris.” Robson said “I am not done yet, I hope to have a couple more years. I come over here hurt everywhere but I am going to laugh like a kid, I am happy.” Silvano Alves knew going into the finals it was a close race and that he could possibly lose or possibly win so he focused on just staying on his bulls. When asked how he felt about being the first rider ever to win Rookie of the year (2009) then come back and win back to back World Titles he replied, “I have always wanted to be a good bull rider but I never imagined I would get to this place.” “Ever since I was young, I have always tried, been very dedicated and loved bull riding.” He said, “I don’t do it for the money I do it because I am passionate about it, that is what gets me.” Both men were very proud of each other on their repeat accomplishments and plan to stay dedicated to the sport and come back next year. They have great appreciation for the fans and support. Just Bucking News 5

Tracye’s Bucking Report by Tracye Dethero

Lane Scott Bull rider, Lane Scott of Kennebec, South Dakota, has known since he was small that a career as a bull rider was in his future. Lane and his sister traveled with their father to rodeos where he would watch the bull riding. The bull riding event instantly caught Lane’s eye and he knew from then on that bull riding would become a big part of his life. At approximately three years old, Lane began riding oversized roping steers. At four years old, he started riding sheep at the rodeos that his father, bull fighter Beaver Scott traveled to for the SDRA (South Dakota Rodeo Association) and the NBRT (Northern Bull Riding Tour). At seven years old, Lane began riding in the Little Britches rodeos and competing in local and Indian rodeos. He then followed his dreams 8 Just Bucking News

a bit further into junior high school and high school rodeo. Lane’s family has always been supportive of his career choice. His father took him around and introduced him to some of the bigger riders, and his mother and older sister would take him to rodeos when he didn’t have traveling partners. Currently, Lane has six traveling partners that he travels with to different rodeos, hopping around in-between South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska hitting rodeos in the different states. Now as a senior at Lineman High School, Lane is competing in approximately 150 rodeos a year with many different associations including the TPBR (Territorial Professional Bull Riders), NBR (Northern Bull Riders), NBRT, and the PRCA. He has

most recently been selected by Team RodeoX to represent their logo while riding. “We are beyond excited to have Lane as a part of our team. He is truly an exciting rider to watch and his potential for success cannot be measured. Lane embodies everything that RodeoX stands for; the youth, excitement, grit, determination, and big dreams that power this brand. We hope to have a long and successful relationship together, following each other into a bright future,” said company spokeswoman, Echo Sharkey. With each rodeo Lane continues to ride to the whistle with high scores and a style all his own. After he rides his bull, Lane enjoys helping others and talking with youth about the sport as his mentors did when he was younger. “I’ve worked in the bull riding industry for many years, and I spend a great deal of time around bull riders, but Lane definitely stands out among them. I can’t remember ever seeing anyone ride with such a relaxed style...he makes it look effortless and watching him ride is always fun...his energy is contagious,” said Sharkey. As the sport of bull riding grows in popularity, Lane sees more and more young boys want to try their hand at the sport. After graduating in the spring of 2013, Lane would like to go back to the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation where he grew up and teach the boys what he has learned at different bull riding schools and from practice and riding professionally to prepare them to ride at a rodeo that is held at the Rosebud Fair in August. What makes this young rider stand out in a crowd you may ask?

With all the rodeos Lane attends he puts 110% of himself out there with the other riders, this summer Lane entered an event in McCool Junction, Nebraska which was put on by Diamond E Bucking Bulls, in memory of Hunter ‘HD’ Hogan whom was killed in Afghanistan on June 23rd in combat operations. Lane was able to spend time with the family for a few days before the bull ride and listened to them talk a great deal about Hunter. The McCool Junction bull ride had two long go’s and a short go. Lane received a 78 and an 81 in the long go rounds, to make it back to the short go. In the short go, he rode his bull for 84 points for a total of 243 points on three head. For his amazing rides, Lane won first place. As he received the buckle, he did what any other great cowboy would; he gave the buckle to Hunter Hogan’s father, Steve, and Hunter’s wife, Brittany. “I felt that giving then the buckle was the right thing to do,” said Lane. “It meant a lot to me to win it and be able to give it back to them as

jogging, training on a Rowdy Ranch 360 drop barrel, along with competing on the weekends is part of what makes him successful. With all of this going for him, Lane is no doubt one of the up and coming bull riders to keep your eye on.

a memory of Hunter.” This year, Lane filled his PRCA card and is looking towards the future progressing to be on top of the game, riding in the PRCA, PBR and hopefully as every cowboys dream, winning the world. Recently in Kansas, Cooper Kangeisser and Todd Leftwich proved that. Kangiesser, a 2006 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier and 2007 Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo winner, won the bull riding average at the Central Plains Rodeo Association’s year-end finals in Hutchinson. Leftwich,

a ten-time International Finals Rodeo qualifier and past IPRA world champion runner-up, did the same in the saddle bronc riding. The CPRA has long been a strong rodeo association that allows Kansas-area cowboys to compete at a high level without straying too far from home. One of the funnest saddle bronc riders to watch over the past decade has been Mike Outhier. A consistent Wrangler NFR qualifier, he established himself well in that event. But Outhier is more than just a saddle bronc rider. He’s a two-time Linderman Award winner, having also earned money in bareback riding, tiedown roping and team roping. During Outhier’s days in the IPRA, he was also a talented bull rider, having earned Rookie of the Year honors in that event, plus the other two riding events. Now he’s making his mark in another event. While the

Dunn, dubbed Mr. Smooth, was one of the most talented and knowledgeable bullfighters to work in the PRCA, and the bull riders of the day clearly appreciated his ability to protect them from harm’s way. A throwback from the old school days, Dunn’s trademark baggies and George Washington wig keep his image engrained in so many people’s minds. And he was also a good comedic clown. Having watched him in person, I was always impressed. Sometimes scenes fade over time, but there are two in particular of Dunn that are still very vivid to me. One is of him up against fighting bull Crooked Nose during the 1986 NFR bullfights. The other is of him and fellow clown Ted Kimsey racing their ponies in the mud at the end of the grand entry at my hometown rodeo in Pretty Prairie, Kan.

The rodeo world is richer for having known Rex Dunn .

Luke Kaufman at the Wild hare Saloon in Owensboro, KY

Luke Kaufman grew up around the sport of rodeo, riding bulls and playing guitar in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He started playing the guitar at a young age and then began playing for his family at Christmas at the tender age of 12 years old. It was also around this time he began writing poetry and eventually started writing his own songs. He then started taking his guitar to school and playing each time he had a chance to sit down. After getting hurt riding bulls, Kaufman was

sitting on his front porch one day thinking about what he would do after his bull riding career was over. Naturally, singing and playing guitar became the answer. Kaufman’s guitar would ride shotgun when he went to help set up arenas with friends while

a right place for everything. One thing led to another, and the rest is history. Kaufman released his first album, “Cowboy Baller” in 2010 through Ledfurd Story by Tracye Dethero Records. “Cowboy Baller,” is mostly toe tapping, bull riding, music taking a break from riding along with a few slow ballads, bulls to heal up. After the like “Cowboy’s Angel” and portable arenas were assembled “Kiss You There”, to round out and the cowboys were sitting the album. around, they would ask Here we are two years later that he bring out his and Kaufman has passed the guitar and play for them. time working his song writing Long time friend, J.B. magic yet one more time with Mauney, told Kaufman his latest album “Beyond the that he should go out on Bunkhouse.” Kaufman began the road with the other working on this album as bull riders and play his soon as his first album was guitar after rodeos at bars finished, writing songs while in the towns where they out on the road performing were staying. the mix that he wanted. That mix was to have a little bit of everything for all of his country music fans. A few of Kaufman’s favorite songs on the album are “I Like The Girls,” featuring singer song writer, Matt Borden, and “We Rock & We Roll.” “Cowboys are very diverse in what they listen to, I wanted to put together an album that would appeal to all of them,” said Kaufman. A week after its release, Beyond the Bunkhouse sold approximately 7,000 to 10,000 copies on itunes. Kaufman continues to stay out on the road performing approximately 15 shows per month, with Sunny Ledfurd and Matt Borden. I was recently able to spend time talking with Luke Kaufman and watching him perform in Redding, CA with Matt Borden and Sunny Ledfurd. Kaufman is an amazing young man that enjoys what he does along with spending time talking with his fans at shows and rodeos. His performances are fun filled and definitely worth taking the time to watch. Kaufman currently resides in Mooresville, NC, where he is able to spend time with friends and family relaxing, writing, and recording when not out on the road.

WADE SUNDELL After finishing the past two seasons within a stone’s throw of a world championship, saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell appeared this summer to be well on his way to winning his first gold buckle. But a persistent knee injury put his 2012 season on hold. Down but not out, Sundell is working his way back to good health. He’s anxious for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and confident that he will have as good of a chance as anyone to become the world titlist. “It’s coming along pretty good,” Sundell said about the recovery process. “I’m feeling awesome and getting stronger. When we get to December, I should be at 100 percent.” Sundell, a four-time WNFR qualifier, had been battling a knee injury all year, he said, but continued to compete. After falling short of his expectations at Cheyenne, Sundell had a tear in his meniscus, and had it scoped in early August. He sat out of competition for a month, then competed at Ellensburg, Puyallup and “a couple of smaller rodeos.”

While at Puyallup, Sundell made it to the final four, and while hurting, he knew he couldn’t pass up an opportunity to get on Lynx Mountain. “I knew that was a pretty nice horse, but it took all I had. After that, I decided to come home. Well, I really didn’t decide, it was decided for me,” said Sundell, who was ranked first in world standings at the time. “I am glad I went back to competing, though, because I earned about $20,000 during that time.” Sundell had knee surgery

While sidelined, Sundell was overtaken in the world standings during the last week of the regular season by Jesse Wright, who has been one of Sundell’s toughest competitors at the WNFR over the past two years. He trails Wright by $19,000, and has only a $500 lead over No. 3 Cody DeMoss. “I knew it was a good possibility I’d lose my spot, but actually, I figured I’d probably be going in (to the WNFR) third. Those guys have been riding too dang good and you’re not going to shut them out.” Some of the toughest competitors historically at the WNFR are right up at the top of the standings list. Jesse Wright has been nothing short of stellar in his two WNFR appearances. In 2010, he finished 16th in regular season standings, but earned a chance to compete at the finals when Rod Hay withdrew because of an injury. He placed on eight of ten head and rallied from 16th to 5th at the end of the WNFR. In 2011, Wright finished second in world standings, but set two WNFR records: most money won in the saddle bronc riding at the finals, and the highest average total.

done and has been actively rehabilitating ever since. He has been riding a bicycle, doing workouts with rubber bands, climbing stairs and other excercises. “If I can think of something to do for it, I’ll give it a try,” he said. But he admitted that he hasn’t been to the doctor as much lately as he probably should. “I’ve thought about going in, but then you think ‘do I really want to know what it’s like,’” Sundell said.

PRCA ProRodeo Photo DeMoss has earned notoriety as the winningest saddle bronc rider never to win a world title. He finished second four times (2004-06, 2009) and third twice (2007 and 2010.) DeMoss would love nothing more than to erase his fame as the sport’s top bridesmaid. Others in the top six are

world champions Taos Muncy (2007, 2011), Cody Wright (2008 and 2010) and Chad Ferley (2006). “You get out there and you never know how things are going to turn out, but I know with these guys it’s going to be one of the better bronc ridings you’ve ever seen,” he said.

And the Boxholm, Iowa cowboy feels just fine with the fact that Jesse Wright will be the man he’s chasing. “I like having his name right up there with mine. Riding alongside him gets you fired up, because you know he’s not going to stub his toe,” Sundell said.

Oklahoma bull rider Tate Stratton may only be 27 years old, but he’s getting accustomed to hearing his name and the word “veteran” used in the same sentence. With eight seasons in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and more than a half-million dollars in earnings, Stratton is headed for his third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, ranked ninth with $78,019 in prize money. That amount is about half of what top-ranked Cody Teel has earned this season, but nobody’s going to hear Stratton complaining. Instead, they’ll hear nothing but upbeat comments. “This year has been an absolute blessing,” said Stratton. “You always have your bumps and bruises, but I’ve been healthy all year and I got into the top 15 early in the year and so I had my sights on going to the NFR. This is the most fun I’ve had during any year, and when the (regular season) finished, I felt good.” Stratton’s first WNFR was in 2009, which ended with him ranked ninth. His second trip was last year, when he qualified during the final week of the season and ended the year-end standings in 15th place. He acknowledges that he was not quite ready for either of his two prior trips to the Thomas and Mack Center. Stratton said the first time he went to Vegas he was physically ready, but not quite there mentally. Last year, he was mentally ready, but not quite where he needed to be physically. He’s been working out and going to the gym several days a week, and also reading books on mental focus, to help get prepared. Stratton has had a little more time to prepare, as he didn’t feel he had to hit every rodeo possible in the final weeks of the season. “It’s nice to go into that last month with a cushion,” said Stratton. “I didn’t have to make the mad dash to qualify. Last year, I made it by the skin of my teeth. Early in the season and into the month of June, I wasn’t even in the top 50. I had a bad spring, but I kept going and believed in myself.”

With several of the WNFR bull riding mainstays like Wesley Silcox, Bobby Welsh and Steve Woolsey not in the top 15 this year, Stratton is one of the more seasoned competitors in the mix. Experience helps, but it’s not everything. “The caliber of young riders coming up in this day and age is just phenomenal,” Stratton said. “Cody Teel’s been riding really good, Trey Benton’s coming on strong and Cody Samora, although he’s not quite as young, he’s having his first healthy year and he’s been riding really well. The competition is going to be tough. J.W. (Harris) is riding good, Trevor (Kastner) is riding good, Cody Whitney is doing well – all of these guys are riding great. It’s going to be an awesome show.” Stratton may seem like a dark horse as he trails standings leader Teel by more than $80,000, but with high payouts, anyone from first to fifteenth can strap on the gold buckle after ten rounds. Stratton said his approach this year will be to treat it as ten individual rodeos. He wants to win as many rounds as he can, and ultimately, the average. If that happens, his odds of a world title are good. As soon as the regular season wrapped, Stratton started on his honey-do list, but he stayed active in the sport, competing at a few winter rodeos and Xtreme Bulls events. He also judged a junior bull riding championship and helped with benefit rodeo school. Working with people younger and less experienced than him has been rewarding to Stratton, and being an influence on others is an honor to him. “ I’ve been around and I’m starting to see the younger guys asking me questions and I try to help them out. I want to leave a positive impact on the sport that I’ve always loved,” he said. “You have a chance to make a connection with the community. You have the opportunity to keep the cowboy spirit alive. The days of kids having a Roy Rogers lunchbox and watching Hopalong Cassidy on T.V. – those days are gone. You can hardly find Bonanza on T.V. anymore without specifically looking for it. Hopefully, I can inspire young minds not only in the nation but throughout the world.”
