Ode to My Mother
‘An Ode to My Mother’ is a song of praise. A testament to the laboured afternoons and an unyeilding persistence of love and grace. The photo shows the subject in her mother’s garmets, symbolizing her need to feel an understanding of her mother’s existence as an older woman. Additionally, the subject embraces the dignity that comes with wearing one’s traditional clothing. In doing so, she hopes that one day she will metamorphisize into the form of a forceful woman being.

When I first came across this series of photographs by J. D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere, I immediately took notice of how he captured the sculpted movement and placement of each haristyle. Each image told something different, their shapes taking the forms of various flora and bringing about my own reminiscence of being a flower girl. I remember growing up, being a flower girl meant fulfilling a rite as part of the wedding ritualistic in which my role had to be the flower girl. At the time Through laced gloves and beaded headbands, the hair was always the star of the show. It was so meticulously molded, revealing stories of love unfolding.
