Palimpsest (source: wikipedia.org)

"A palimpsest is «a parchment or other writing surface on which the original text has been effaced or partially erased, and then overwritten by another; a manuscript in which later writing has been superimposed on earlier (effaced) writing». In other words, a palimpsest is a «multi-layered record». In the Middle Ages, these parchments were created from vellum, which was then recycled due to scarcity. Chemical agents were used in the recycling process to erase the existing text; the new text was subsequently superimposed onto the clean sheet. With time however the traces of old writing reappeared, leading to the creation of a palimpsest. Palimpsests are there therefore the product of a layering of texts over a period of time" (The Chicago School of Media Theory 2017).

In this desolate area, a new Hyperloop Desert Campus emerges behind the dust. The structure reveals itself as a landmark for the surroundings, being at the same time a monument of technological progress. The indigent environment creates an opportunity to create an icon, not only in the context of the desolated site but also for the Hyperloop itself. Despite this, the building was integrated into the plot as carefully as possible, referring appropriately to the nearby mountain range on many levels, at the same time giving the impression of an extraneous monolith arising in the desert.

P ro l o g Just as in the past the church was the heart of the town, the stage is the heart of the theatre. The sacred place for both of those bodies. The walls, due to their sublimity, should remain as intact as possible. To emphasize the value of the ruins, the new building should be simple and easily adaptable to various functions. Therefore the new building has a retractable roof and a wall which allows opening the whole structure to the rest of the church enabling a variety of configurations. The main block should be light and give the impression of levitating in the middle of ancient stone walls. At the same time, the new building cannot be closed, to give the impression of being open and friendly to residents so that it becomes the centre of Grottole again. The Chiesa Diruta will be the reference point and a strong attraction for everyone residents and tourists.

Ac t I The church itself is like a spectacle and the new object should be the stage for it, so it cannot outshine the existing debris, it should remain in the shadow and act as a proscenium.

Ac t I I The main block’s shell houses a wooden playhouse structure that works as an audience, exhibition balcony or additional space for users. Due to various possible configurations, there are thrust stage, proscenium stage and theatre in the round stage available inside the volume. Nevertheless, the main stage is outside and the auditorium may be located either throughout the venue or just in the gardens leaving the building undisturbed.

Ac t I I I Additionally, people inside, at different times of the day, performing everyday activities are also a spectacle for which the new facility should be open and prepared.

Ep i l o g ue The ruins are so tempting and romantic for their incompleteness. So, what may the future hold for this structure?

Proximity

The plot is located at Sobieskiego St., opposite to the laboratories of the Faculty of Automatic Control and Robotics at Gdansk University of Technology. There are no gastronomic or other service facilities in this area. In addition, the University does not have universal and inter-faculty spaces designed for learning or socializing.

N

An important design guide was the adaptation of the entire facility to the disabled people. There is a natural slope on the , which hinders the foundation of two buildings on the same level, thus creating a fault in the zone created between the blocks, which has been fully developed, including a ramp with a 6% slope. Modern architecture places great emphasis on creating high-quality public areas. The design area is large enough to create a complex of residential buildings with a common space in between. Such urban interior aims to integrate urban space and create an attractive place where students will want to spend time.

The project area an be accessed from the main road, so it is connect with the whole city, there is also a bus stop nearby. Currently, there is a wild car park in this area. The planned investment will liquidate this car park. Due to a big problem with a shortage of parking spaces around the GUT ’s campus 49 parking spaces are planned in the underground floor.

Our location was the boulevard space by The Liberty Bridge in Cieszyn. The Liberty Bridge stretches over the Olza river connecting the Polish side of Cieszyn with Czech’s one. The plot is divided into two areas, one with concrete slabs, going to the river, the other with grass and bushes. The whole site leans across the river creating a slope. The main problem set before us was to create something that naturally fits the plot and the river, encouraging the pedestrians at the same time. Led by feelings we experienced on-site and amazed by the diversity of surroundings, we decided on construction, which allows users to focus on interactions between them and nature without significant interference in the landscape. A platform of a total length of 6 and width 3 meters allows them to contemplate surrounding and chit-chat with friends. Additionally, the whole object, including construction, was painted blue, which should connote with the Olza river old artistic installation ‘stitching’ two shorelines together.
