Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

Both symbols and signs are abstract expression and commonly used to express the relationship between the form and the concept. From the reading, the sign is used to represent the dynamic object. It also expresses the functions or qualities of the object. The symbol can also express the dynamic object, but can communicate imformation through a fomal representation. Different from signs and symbols, the diagram does not play a role in presenting dynamic objects. It emphasizes on organizing every concepts and data together to form a logical, hirechical and abstract system, which is better to express the space, spatial distribution and the effect of objects. In addition, there should not be any annotations in diagram.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

From the reading, Herzberger discussed that the flexibility and multiplicity should play an important role of defining space. The multiplicity of the space make themself contain more functions than defining them by only one specific purpose. Threshold, which is defined as the point that a physiological or psychological effect begins to be produced, is another term. Therefore, designers can not define the space for only one specific purpose. They should consider more about the multiplicity and functionalityto make the space multiple. For the Toyo Ito’s Serpentine Pavilion. The distribution of glass and solid let some sunlight go through the pavilion to create a new threshold(shadow area and light area). Furnitures are located in the sahdow area to make sure that people will not sit under the sunlight directly. In addition, the shadow can also form the private and personal space for visitors.

Week Two

South West Isometric The pavilion is combined by structure, glazing and solid. The distribution of glass and solid let the sunlight go through the building, which divides the internal space into two parts(light and shadow) to create a new threshold inside the pavilion. I believe that there must be some relationship between the human movement and this threshold. In this way, shadow has become the most important element that i should show. Actually, it is quite difficult to trace the shadow in rhino. Therfore, I chose to use Adobe Illustrator to trace the top surface of the pavilion, which is solid, and blue it to make it looks like the real shadow. This isometric view is chosen to show the shadow of the sunlight at 12 pm inside the building. After expolored the circulation and the threshould, i find that most people prefer to sit or stand in the shadow besides the sunlight rather than sit or stand under the sunlight. That is also why the furniture was formed that kind of distribution.

Save images from internet. Then, import those images into Adobe Illustrator Keep tracing

Export the linework into dwg file. Import it into rhino and trace it again. Then, extrude cruve to create the real module.
