The uniqueness imbued in and expressed by Taiwan’s modern culture is the result of both geography and a multicultural society. As the wheel of time slowly spins, different aspects of the culture—which make it historic and unique—come to the fore. This developmental process has, indirectly, enriched Taiwan’s handicrafts, whose own evolution gives insight into the future of culture in Taiwan. A beautiful marriage of natural materials and natural talent is what results when our handicrafters take to practicing their arts and bring forth works of “useful art”—pieces that are not only decorative, but also serve a practical function. As people’s lives have changed with the introduction of ever-more impressive gadgetry, traditional handicrafts have become seen as moribund, yet the pieces made by handicrafters do what industrial society cannot—create objects that are at once tactile and visual sensations. The road ahead, as we see it at the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI), starts with our cultivating the next generation of crafters. To this end, we have run the “New Fun in Crafts” project since 2008. Working with craft families, winners of the National Crafts Achievement Award, and instructors at tertiary educational institutions. Through interaction, dialogue, and apprenticeships, the project forges a union between traditional crafting techniques and culture and modern crafting spirit and technologies. What esults are pieces reflective of the zeitgeist and modern aesthetics. Pieces crafted during the 2013-2014 year won prizes at the 2014 Young Designers Exhibition, the 2015 Golden Pin Award, as well as the 2015 IF Student Award. Student teams participating in the program have, for the past two years, also grabbed the spotlight at the Maison et Object trade fair, and been featured in international design media publications, all of which have breathed new life into handicrafts here at home. Culture is enlivened when the baton is passed from generation to generation, and handicrafts are a cradle of inspiration. Yan Shui-long, a handicrafts pioneer, believes that one can see a nation’s overall level of cultural attainment in its handicrafts. Today, the NTCRI is helping crafters pass on their skills and publicize the innovativeness of Taiwan’s crafters to a global audience.
