Celebrating Patriotism with Michels Family Foundation Ispecial n the month of July, we are reminded that the colors red, white, and blue carry significance. Each color within our flag proclaims our freedom and our patriotism. With the Dale R. and Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation, we remember our United States veterans, their determination, courage, and commitment, as well as the price they paid for our freedom. Co-owner and Vice President of the Michels Corporation, Tim Michels states, “Patriotism is rolling up our sleeves, working hard and doing our part as Americans to keep our democracy strong with good jobs, ample opportunity, and the security and freedom we all enjoy.” Underwriting patriotic programming such as The National Memorial Day Concert, D-Day: The Price of Freedom, Marines, Stories from the Homefront, and more, the Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation understands and recognizes the dedication and strength within our troops, both past and present. By underwriting these wonderful programs about the men and women in our armed services, they help ensure that patriotic programming continues to be shown on our stations. MPTV is proud to celebrate our nation, its diversity and its freedoms. We proudly salute The Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation and their strong sense of patriotism. 2

6-15 & 20-31

S

o do your children or grandchildren have 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day? How about 4 servings of water, or 3 servings of low fat dairy products?

MPTV V-ME, WORLD & CREATE LISTINGS

18 & 19

If they do – and will limit themselves to no more than 2 hours of screen time daily and spend at least 1 hour a day in physical activity – then they are eligible for some great prizes in MPTV’s I Am the Fit Generation challenge! It’s a highlight of the station’s ongoing initiative to encourage healthy eating and physical activity among children ages 4-12.

10&36 DAYTIME

The challenge is included in our healthy habits tracker, an entertaining eight-page guide that has been distributed the past few months through some 120 schools and libraries, the Children’s Health Education Center in Milwaukee, and YMCA Day Camps.

Auction Information, Donations (262) 781- 4998

The tracker includes recipes for healthy snacks, reasons not to drink soda, suggested games and physical activities, a chart that encourages children to follow the 5-4-3-2-1 guidelines referenced above, book suggestions that focus on health and fitness, and brain teasers.

Advertising and Underwriting (414) 297- 8012

In addition, all entrants will be included in a drawing for a variety of prizes, including free tickets to an upcoming Brewers game, a Trek bicycle, a bowling party, roller skating passes, and much more. If your youngsters didn’t receive or have misplaced their health trackers, you can print out a challenge form online at mptv.org/fitkids/pdf/sign_up.pdf. During the summer, MPTV is also hosting three free I Am the Fit Generation workshops at Milwaukee libraries for children ages 4-7 and their parents: at the Center Street Library, July 8, at 10:30 a.m.; the Capitol Library, July 15, at 10:30 a.m.; and the Martin Luther King Library, August 5, at 10 a.m. The tracker and summer workshops are just two projects of our ten-part I Am the Fit Generation initiative, which has also included health-related broadcast programs for children and adults; entertaining music videos featuring the local hip-hop group The Figureheads; the mptv.org/fitkids website with lots of information and resources; and participation in community events. We hope you will encourage your young family members to get involved in these important activities intended to address the alarming problem of child obesity.

MPTV Premieres and Specials for July

C OOKING RAW, a new series featuring a motherARTS DIGEST 7/13, 7PM daughter team of "raw cookers" will premiere on Saturday, Lynden Sculpture Garden/Racine Art Museum/La Lune July 10 at 11am on Channel 10.1.

Furniture/Latino Arts Strings

Cerrtified Raw Chef Caroline Carter and daughter Shenita Ray put a twist on popular dishes by using uncooked ingredients to create them. Highlights include "burgers" made of sesame seeds, mushrooms, carrots, and other vegetables; "spaghetti" made of zucchini and topped with marinara sauce and accompanied by kale salad; "taco meat" made of walnuts; and, a "chocolate mousse parfait" made with cashew milk and no chocolate! Local nutritionist Laurie Meyer makes a cameo appearance on a couple of shows discussing the health benefits of cooking raw throughout the series.

Milwaukee's Lynden Sculpture Garden features more than 50 monumental sculptures spread out over a 40-acres location. Arts Digest marries breathtaking scenes of the sculptures with music from the MSO to create a truly inspiring viewing experience. Jon Anne Willow tours one of the most significant contemporary craft museums in the United States, The Racine Art Museum. Tom Strini visits La Lune Collection Furniture in Riverwest to learn about their hand crafted, environmentally conscious furniture. Young musicians from the Latino Arts Strings perform; and John McGivern visits the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design to ask if artists are born or bred.

Raw food diets and recipes have increased in popularity over the years, as preparing raw foods maintain extremely high level of the enzymes, minerals and vitamins inherent in the foods. Many also enjoy the creativity and unique techniques used to prepare dishes. Caroline and Shenita Ray are the owners of Eden's Market, a small local company dedicated to creating healthy foods that taste delicious. Some of their products are available at Beans and Barley, Riverwest Co-Op, Riverwest Yogashayla, Slow Pokes Local Food in Grafton and Water House Foods in Lake Mills as well as online at www.edensmarket.com/ MEXICAN 7/10, 11AM Repeated on 7/16, 6PM ITALIAN 7/17, 11AM Repeated on 7/23, 6PM DESSERTS 7/24, 11AM Repeated on 7/30, 6PM BURGER DINNER 7/31, 11AM

s a professional ball player, I know what it takes to keep going - and that's training right and eating right. Choosing an apple instead of chips, and putting aside the video game and getting some physical activity, is right for body and mind. And it's fun, too! I applaud MPTV's I AM THE FIT GENERATION campaign for helping kids be the best they can be, and encourage kids and families to make the move to a healthy lifestyle.

LOST CAVE TEMPLES OF THE HIMALAYA

IKingdom n a remote corner of the Himalaya, in the forbidden of Mustang, mysterious caves, perched high on cliff

faces and carved by humans thousands of years ago, have lain just beyond reach — until recently. In April of 2007, a team of climbers and scientists climbed inside the long-hidden chambers for the first time in modern history. This film follows the riveting story, told by filmmaker Liesl Clark, about her husband, seven-time Everest summiter Pete Athans, and big-wall climber Renan Ozturk, who take on the dangerous job of climbing into the crumbling caves, searching for nine legendary cave temples called “kabum.” 7/5, 9PM K HD 10

GULF ISLANDS, THE: MISSISSIPPI'S WILDERNESS SHORE

O

ne of the nation’s most popular national parks is 80 percent underwater and partly located in Mississippi---- Gulf Islands National Seashore. The park is a collection of mainland historical sites and a string of beaches and islands stretching 160 miles from Cat Island in Mississippi to the Okaloosa area near Fort Walton, Florida. With breathtaking cinematography, this documentary tells the story of how this region came to be a national park, while highlighting their natural and historical significance and explaining their role in protecting the coast from hurricanes and the efforts underway to further protect and restore them. 7/13, 7:30PM K HD
