19 Concentration and Low GI foods

Children, especially those who find it difficult to concentrate, need to have a good night’s sleep and a substantial low GI breakfast in order to maintain their concentration span. Carbohydrates supply energy, but not all carbohydrate foods are the same and they behave very differently in our bodies. The glycemic index or GI gives an indication of how different carbohydrates affect our blood glucose levels.  We need to eat low GI foods to sustain energy. The brain is fuelled, energised or stimulated entirely by blood sugar, so when the blood sugar levels drop it becomes more difficult to concentrate. Although the children of yesterday ate the same amount of calories as those today, they were much more active and very few processed foods were consumed. Consequently their food was comparatively unchanged from the field to the plate and the body was called upon to process the food.  This took quite some time, resulting in a feeling of being full and sustained. However, today much of the flour is ground to a fine powder and cereals are processed with sugar added to them to make them more appealing. Therefore, most carbohydrates break down quickly and do not give a constant flow of energy. The glycemic index ranges are; low GI = 55 or less; medium GI = 56 – 59; high GI = 70 or more. If a child eats muesli (40) or oats porridge (63) he will be better off regarding blood-sugar levels, than if he eats Rice Krispies (82) or scones (92) for breakfast (University of Sydney). TOTSEAT - The washable, squashable high chair. Dining involves more crayons than caviar these days, especially when baby is at the squirmy stages. But it seems like every restaurant’s high chairs (if they even have one) are missing straps, are wobbly, are sized incorrectly and/or speckled with nasty goo. This is where Totseat comes to the rescue - this cleverly made portable seat fits any chair from upright dining chairs to camp chairs around the braai, safely and securely anchoring babies from around eight months to two and a half years. It’s so easy to use: simply slip the sturdy cotton seat back over the chair back, tighten, add child, buckle securely, tighten, add munchies. Weighing in at just 260grams and complete with its own miniscule travelling pouch, it’s the ideal travelling companion and makes a great gift. Totseat comes in a range of funky colours and is set to be SA‘s trendy new fashion must have for “babies who lunch”. Totseat is portable, washable, squashable and is the only portable highchair to carry the logo of the Child Accident Prevention Trust (UK) in recognition of its safety credentials. Totseat was developed in close consultation with safety experts, parents, babies and over 900 chairs.

holiday fun

I thought Sugar Bay was the best place ever. You get to meet so many different people and the leaders are very nice to you. You make new friends and get to know people so well. The beach and the lagoon were very warm and they teach you Kayaking, Body boarding, Surfing, Paintball, Sand art, Swimming, Paddle Boarding, Diving, Scuba Diving, Crate Building, High Rope and many more. I can’t wait to go back to Sugar Bay. I know that you will enjoy it as much as I did. I tried lots of different things and I met the most amazing counsellors and kids from all around the country. The food was great and we got vegies. We did a lot of team challenges and it was a great lesson in how to work with others. Kyle Somers 14 Years Old Sugar Bay rocks and rocks, it was the best week of my life. I made new friends and the leaders were amazing and they really make you feel like part of the family. You choose what activities you want to learn and the leaders teach you. The food was delicious, just like home food. The counsellors were helpful and my favourite would be all of them. We sang lots of songs, played games and had an amazing campfire and told stories and sang songs and made smors (my favourite thing now!!). We camped outside and it was so cool. My favourite activity was paddle boarding and I helped rescue a counsellor. I also tried rock climbing and free diving. I can’t wait to go back to Sugar Bay, I ask my mom and dad before every holiday when I can go back to Sugar Bay and to see my friends and to also make new friends. Tyler Somers 10 years old My boys went and spent the most amazing week at Sugar Bay in the March School Holidays and what can I say about Sugar Bay it is the most amazing place to send your kids where they have good outdoor fun. You can rest easy knowing that your kids are in good hands and are getting all the space they need to grow and learn new things. I would send my kids every holiday if I could and believe me they want to go every holiday for the whole holiday. So next time you need to decide on what to do with your kids for the holidays give Sugar Bay a call and they will get you connected. It is money well spent. They get 3 wholesome meals a day and vegies (which is important for moms!). They are also learning teamwork and making friends from all around the country. I only wish they took kids in preschool and then I would have a real week of holidays. Don’t let your kids miss out on this amazing place right on our KZN coastline and doorstep.
