Tropical Topics - March 2012

from the editor Spring is finally here! And though I’ve been saying this for months but I cannot believe how quickly this year is passing. Pretty soon it will be time to wrap up this year, put on our swimsuits and hit the beach or head off on a fabulous vacation! But there is still work to be done... March is shaping up to be an exciting month for JLGC starting out with the placement fair at our March meeting and ending with Boutique by the Bay. It’s an exciting time to anticipate what the new League year can bring, as well as get in gear to finish this year strong. If you are unsure of what you want to do next year and will be participating in a placement interview with Nominating Placement, the placement fair is the place to get all of your questions answered and find that perfect spot where your talents can truly shine. I hope that you all are as excited about BBTB as I am. Though I love anything New York, I am thrilled to participate in my first visit to BBTB! I am so proud of this issue of Tropical Topics and want to extend a big “thank you” to all of the chairs who helped make it as “beefy” as it is! It is so encouraging to hear about all of the positive influences our League is making in the community and to read the thank you notes (page 11-12) that show that all of our hard work does make a difference. Another important thing to make note of is page 18 and the date for this month's meeting. It will be on Mondy,

March 19.

One League, One Mision

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GALVESTON COUNTY, INC.

President 2010-2011

Hello Spring! Thanks to all for your contributions during last month’s meeting and for your patience during our sessions. Although the venue itself was great, the weather could have cooperated more. This second session was meant for you to meet with your councils and share plans remaining for the next few months, as well as review upcoming deadlines previously posted and the unanimous vote to increase active membership dues for next year by $10. It was meant to serve as a question and answer session and to chat with members you may not have had a chance to know yet. Thank you Council VPs for your collaboration and leadership! Fundraising met to review plans for the upcoming Boutique by the Bay style show and luncheon including the event and sponsorships to date. Be sure to pick up a few flyers and post them around town. The Beachside Kitchen Tours will be here before we know it. Cookbook is hard at work planning the second annual event and it is sure to be a great time! Fund Development has been working hard behind the scenes searching for grant opportunities (thanks Angie Brown). There are a few possibilities on the horizon and we look forward to a positive response soon. Our Communications council is also hard at work, continuously putting together press releases and posting League events all over Galveston County. I am so proud to see how much we have grown in the Public Relations department (thanks Alicia Cahil and Liz Henson!) within the last couple of years. We are also making progress with updating our website (thanks Elizabeth McCarty!). Chairman, if you have revisions to the website that pertain to your area, please send them to Elizabeth. The March General meeting will be focused on this year’s placement fair. Each community committee will make an informative display board to showcase exactly what the projects are about. We will hear a little about each one and then get an opportunity to meet with the current chairman for more details following the meeting. This session is important as Nominating/Placement will be hosting placement interviews for next year so be sure to take the time to learn about each one. Nominating/Placement is working on finalizing chairman positions for next year and will be announcing them in March as well. What better way to know more about a project of interest than to roll up your sleeves and experience it firsthand. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to complete your community hours in areas you normally would not have an opportunity to be a part of. As we move into the last stretch of the year, it is hard to believe that May is just around the corner. I look forward to what we have left to accomplish and hope you all do as well. Have a great week and see you at the March meeting! Fondly, Yvette

kudos korner Congratulations to Candice Freeman for receiving the February Member of the Month award! Candice received nominations for demonstrating teamwork and generosity. She did an excellent job stepping up to the plate when her chairman needed her the most. She did this without complaint and willingly took on more responsibilities with little guidance. Candice is flexible and accommodating with her time and put together a presentation for our Board of Directors and membership pertaining to a vital piece of our structure next year. She is an asset to the organization and deserves recognition for her team spirit. Kudos Candice!

committee updates Adopt A School

JJL-Island

We have had a busy February at KIPP Coastal Village! Our committee has been busy in the classrooms by working with the kids and helping the teachers. We have been helping with math stations, reading books with struggling readers and reading to the classes. Look at the cute treats we brought them to show the teachers just how much they are appreciated! Kris McLendon make the snowman doughnuts and Ashlee DuPont and Dana Todd made the adorable S'mores! Thanks a bunch, ladies!

Once again the JR JR League girls outdid themselves. I am so proud of all their efforts at the Mardi Gras Special People’s Ball. This is an awesome annual event to celebrate Mardi Gras at a casual, festive event. The girls were fantastic serving lunch to the guests. Then these brave souls escorted all the characters around the event and guided the “blind” characters while managing the crowd. Clearly the girls' meeting on public speaking was timely. I want to THANK the girls for coming including: Camden Roeder, Courtney Mack, Elizabeth Hosler, Emma Zompa, and Lillie Ann Hosler. You all did a fantastic job. I also appreciate the active and provisionals for helping out including: Terry Lynn Jones, Candace Weber, Trisha Leimer, Janet Hoffman, Catherine Griffin, Jennifer Caffey, Christine Oliver, Stevy Curbow, and Hayley Hardcastle (what an amazing women… pregnant and dancing with the characters… wish I were that cool!) Also thanks to our friends at this event: Edward and Anna. Everyone is welcomed to one or all of our upcoming events:

Fundraising The year is quickly winding down for the Fundraising Committee. For those

of you that still need your required Fundraising hour, there is only one opportunity remaining in the Boutiques By the bay. We will need people to help set up, take down as well as a few miscellaneous tasks during the event. Please watch the Wednesday Weekly Notes for your opportunity to sign up.

•Thursday, March 22nd from 6:00 to 7:00pm at the JLGC’s TA building in Galveston – Candace Weber will be hosting the girls for our monthly meeting. The topic will be Time Management. Please make an effort to come by so the girls can meet more of our membership. If you would like to help please contact Candace Weber at candace_weber@gisd.org Contact Terry Lynn Jones at jones.terrylynn@gmail.com or Janet Hoffman at jhoffman@ibisengineers.com to let us know if you are interested in joining us. 13

Here's a quick run down on cookbook points as well as a few upcoming opportunities to wrap up any remaining points you may need: Each active member is required to obtain ten cookbook points by the end of the League year. You may also obtain cookbook points by setting up a wholesale account or of course, purchasing or selling cookbooks.

patient perks A big thank you to all who participated in or provided supplies for the Valentine event at Ronald McDonald House! It was a huge success and the clients there felt very loved! FLEECE! - The fleece blanket project is in high demand this year. We have run out of material at the last two meetings (a good problem to have) because interest has been higher than the original number of people who signed up in December. We will have more fleece available at the March meeting. If you have not been able to get your fleece, and plan to do so at the next meeting please, e-mail Rachel Keehn so she can make sure a piece of material is set aside for you! If you have completed blankets please bring them to the March general meeting and report the hours spend working on them to Rachel Keehn or they will not get counted! Are you interested in volunteering with patients at UTMB or still need to complete needed volunteer hours? JLGC used to volunteer there regularly prior to hurricane Ike- passing out books, magazines and craft kits, rocking sweet little ones or playing games and reading with older children. They would love to see our smiling faces around the newly opened pediatric unit again. IT WOULD REQUIRE A SPECIFIC VOLUNTEER APPLICATION, ORIENTATION, & HEALTH SCREENING THROUGH UTMB. Once qualified, hours could be completed according to your schedule, and a JLGC cart filled with supplies & activities is provided. If this interests you please contact Rachel Keehn for further information because the application process would need to start soon in order for volunteering to happen before League year end deadlines. outreach opportunities The Outreach Committee has been working hard to firm up a variety of volunteer opportunities in the coming month. So whether you want to get some fresh air at a 5K walk, have an artistic flare or just like a good glass of wine…we have the event for you. Here’s a bit of info on our confirmed events…. March 25th – Habitat for Humanity Women Build 5K Walk Join us this year for our 4th annual Women Build 5K Walk & Build! Bay Area Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty housing by partnering with hard-working needy families to build homes and renovate communities locally and abroad. Through homeownership, families are equipped with the tools to put an end to the cycle of multi-generational poverty. Junior League will be helping with the setup, registration and t-shirt distribution for the walk held at the UH Clear Lake Campus from 12:30-3pm. March 31st – Hope Village Passport to Wine Hope Village, located in Friendswood, Texas, provides both residential and support services to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Passport to Wine is an evening of wine tasting, culinary delights and auctions…and has become one of their largest fundraising events for the Hope Village Foundation. Junior League will be helping with registration, silent auction and general assistance during the event. 5:45pm-9:30pm April 21st - Child Advocacy Center of Galveston The Advocacy Center for Children of Galveston County works for the prevention, intervention, investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse. Licensed therapists, case workers, and staff work together under one roof to eliminate the re-victimization of child abuse victims through comprehensive services to child abuse victims and their families. Junior League will be painting a mural on the walls of the children’s waiting room to make it more festive and warm for the kids that come through the facility. Shifts available between 10am-4pm May 6th – 38th Annual Galveston Historical Home Tour Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) has been at the heart of an extraordinary preservation movement on the island for more than 50 years. Every year, in order to showcase the continuing success of the city’s revitalization efforts, GHF opens a diverse collection of privately owned restored homes and other buildings to the public during the first two weekends in May. Junior League will be acting as hosts and docents (tour guides) at this year’s cover house, the Runge House, located at 1301 Market Street. Shifts are available from 10am-6pm . ******Please sign up on the member section of the Junior League website to volunteer at any of our upcoming events. JLGC spring collection drive- Soles4Souls® This year’s JLGC’s participation on the planning committee for the 2012 Annual Galveston Chamber of Commerce Celebrating Women: Mind, Body, Spirit Conference is to once again coordinate a collection drive. The committee selected to partner with Soles4Soles®, a non-profit organization, to collect new or gently used shoes in all sizes male and female. We will be collecting shoes at the March, April and May meetings. Please help us by pairing your shoes with a rubber band if possible. This will help speed up the process for delivery. Shoes collected will not only be distributed internationally, but within our own community! Soles4Souls® collects new shoes to give relief to the victims of abject suffering and collects used shoes to support micro-business efforts to eradicate poverty. They procure shoes and get them to those in need locally and internationally. Soles4Souls® accepts all types of shoes: athletic, running, dress, sandals, pumps, heels, work boots, cleats, dance, flip flops, just as long as they are new or gently worn.
