MCKERNAN BAPTIST YOUTH MINISTRY
Our church’s mission statement states that we exist to become a community of fully devoted and developed followers of Jesus Christ that reaches our world with His transforming love and truth. Our youth ministry exists to help move students along the path from having heard about Jesus to knowing Jesus personally to sharing Jesus with the world around them. How we accomplish this is through fun and community! We love to have fun in our activities, while we learn together, and in connecting with each other. We also love coming alongside parents as they navigate their student’s teenage years.
MOBY (GRADES 10-12)
FIT (GRADES 7-9)
M3 (MOBY MEXICO MISSION) 2014 TEAM
Being a high school student can be exciting and scary all at the same time, and that is why we encourage you to have your high school son or daughter join us in MOBY. During your student’s time in MOBY, we hope to help them overcome their fears of growing older, have fun meeting new people, and make friends who get who they are and help them grow in their faith. We also hope to help your student try new things like sharing their faith or going on a mission trip. And it is our desire to help your student see how their faith can and will help them in everyday situations, and to encourage them to finish high school with a strong faith. Wednesday, 6pm, Lighthouse (11125 76 Ave NW) This is our Wednesday night worship, teaching and small group time. It is the place where students get to discover their faith on their own and make it real and understandable and practical in their lives. This fall we will be running the Youth Alpha series, which is designed to engage young people in conversations about faith, life, and God.
FIT is an acronym for Fun, Identity, and Truth. We want to be the place where your child entering their teen years can have a fun, crazy, great time; we want to be the place where they begin to discover their own identity, what makes them tick, what makes them special and precious and created by God; and we want to be the place where they discover for themselves the truth about God and a real relationship with Jesus. We have big hopes and dreams for what your son or daughter’s years in Junior High ministry will be like and are so excited to be a part of their lives. We highly value them, as well asgetting to know you better in these months and years ahead. More information soon. Every two years we take a group of high school students to Mexico City to serve alongside Pastor Jaime Becerra and his family. We usually serve this church by leading a Vacation Bible School for the children in the area around the church. Watch for more details coming soon!.

COLLEGE & CAREER mckernanbaptist.ca/collegeandcareer firstname.lastname@example.org
This year, college and career is launching three missional communities. Missional communities are similar to small groups in that they will meet weekly and go through a common curriculum. What sets missional communities apart, though, is that each community will have a common mission. All are welcome to join a missional community. Check the website for more information about how you can be involved and to learn about each community. Missional Communities will meet at a time convenient for as many as possible once the groups are established (i.e. around a meal or before/after a church event or service)
September 28 (McKernan Neighbourhood), October 12 (Thanksgiving Dinner for out of town students), November 30 (Whyte Ave) One of the ways to get practically involved is by coming to one of our Serve Nights. Each month, a different missional community will be hosting a Serve Night. This is a chance to join that missional community in proclaiming and demonstrating the kingdom of God where they have already been ‘on mission’. Serve Nights are open to all people from the Church as well as those outside the Church. Serve Nights will start at 6:00pm and we will meet at the Lighthouse (11125 76 Ave NW).
CONVERGE WORSHIP SERVICES
September 7, October 4, November 2 (‘Burn’ Edmonton City wide prayer initiative), December 7. Converge is our monthly young adults worship night at McKernan Baptist Church. We aim to have the service on the first Saturday of each month. Converge is open to young adults from the age of 18 to their mid-30’s. The heart of Converge is to create a context in which young adults can join together and worship God with others in a similar stage of life. ‘Like’ us on Facebook to keep up to date for themes and more information. Unless otherwise communicated, Converge is in the Lighthouse (11125 76 Ave NW) at 7pm.
Sunday, September 29, October 27, and November 24, at the Lighthouse (11125 76 Ave NW) The last Sunday of each month (except for December), College and Career is going to be hosting a meal following the 2nd service for all young adults! This meal, which will only cost a toonie, will be a great time to meet new students and fellowship over dinner. The toonie lunch will take place in the Lighthouse (11125 76 Ave) directly following the 2nd service. 8|
CONNECTION CATALOGUE FALL 2013
Dates and times will vary based on availability of the hosts. Do you love free food? How about meeting people from our church? Well then, you will love Koinonia night! Koinonia is an initiative designed to help C&C aged students get to know others in the church in a more personal atmosphere. Groups of 4 or 6 college students will be hosted by a family in the church for an evening meal and a chance to get to know others. All you need to do is sign up, let us know when you are free, and we will let you know which home you’ll be able to go to for free food!
September 14 (Kickoff BBQ), September 21 (TBA), October 19 (TBA), November 9 (TBA), November 16 @ 6:00 (All-Church Pie and Games Night), December 14 (Christmas Banquet), January 17-19, 2014 (Winter Retreat) Each month, our College and Career group is going to be doing at least one fun event. The purpose of these events is to help facilitate the establishment of lasting relationships by creating a safe place for people to meet and spend time together. We will be hosting a variety of events which will appeal to all sorts of people. We will try to keep our events as low-cost as possible. Events will typically start at the Lighthouse (11125 76 Ave NW) at 7:00pm.
BASIC BIBLE STUDIES
Basic will run every other week starting September 19. C&C will be running 2 Bible studies in the 2013-14 ministry year. From September to December we will be running Basic by Francis Chan. From January to April we will be running Multiply by David Platt & Francis Chan. Both of these studies will be the same format: we will meet every other week on a Wednesday or Thursday night. We will be following a ‘come when you can’ format, though we would recommend making a commitment to being there as often as is possible. Check out www.basicseries.com for more information about this amazing study.
As you can see, there’s a lot going on at C&C! We need a lot of people actively pouring themselves into the ministry. If this is something you would be interested in please email Pastor Daunavan at Daunavan@mckernanbaptist.ca.

FAMILY SUNDAE SCHOOL PICNIC
Sunday, September 22 , East Soccer Field, after first service Following the first service, come and join with other families in the field for an opportunity of fellowship and friendship building. Pack a cooler with a lunch for yourself and enjoy the company of other parents and children within our church. There will be a variety of games and activities available for all age groups up to grade six, door prizes and some ice cream treats for the kids. This will be a great opportunity to meet the many families, teachers, volunteers, leadership and staff who will be involved with Children’s Ministry this year.
CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
December 15, This will be a great opportunity for the children from age two through grade six to share with the larger church family some songs and presentations around the meaning of Christmas and ways that they have been learning about God’s truths in Sunday School.
PROGRAMS BEING OFFERED:
On Sunday mornings, we are pleased to offer programming for children from newborn through grade six as part of our Children’s Ministry. Below you will see a brief overview of each age group and relevant details that will give you a better understanding of what each group will be engaged with each week. Full programming is available during the first service only, but nursery and early childhood care will be combined and available during the second service.
NURSERY (0 TO 24 MONTHS)
In the nursery, children are cared for by our wonderful volunteers in an environment that gives them space to play and explore while parents can feel free to enjoy the service. There is space for them to crawl and interact under the watchful eye of our volunteers. For the parents who volunteer, the time spent in the nursery is often a great time of building relationships and strengthening friendships with other parents who have children of the same age.
KINDERGARTEN – GRADE 4
Each week, the children will participate in a singing time with the rest of the elementary children and will be given an opportunity to bring offering, hear stories that will encourage them in their faith and build relationships with other children. After this time together, they will return to their own room to spend about 45 minutes as a small group to discuss their lesson further while participating in a range of games, crafts and activities. For the small group time, children in Kindergarten through grade two will meet together, and grades three and four will meet in a separate room.
This year, our Children’s Ministry will be using the Faithweaver Now curriculum. These lessons engage each age group with the same story while challenging the children towards a better understanding of God and His word through age appropriate activities. This can be a great benefit for families with children in multiple age groups as families will be able to go home and continue to talk about what they have all learned that day. This year we will also have access to a number of online resources to support families during the week.
EARLY CHILDHOOD (2 TO 4 YEARS)
This is a new age grouping for our Children’s Ministry this year. In this room, the children will have the opportunity for both play and learning. They will participate each week in a singing time with the elementary children, and then return to their room for a story, craft and snack. They will be encouraged each week to learn a simple saying that they can share with their parents about a Biblical truth they have learned that week.
On Sunday mornings, this age group will experience worship time with their families in the main service. After a time of worship they will break off into their own grade level grouping for more age-level appropriate conversation, discussion, games and activities. The first Sunday of every month, the grade 5-6’s will be invited to spend the full service with their families. In addition to the Sunday morning programming, we will be offering a once a month evening activity for the grade 5’s and 6’s to participate in to develop stronger relationships and connections.
