Message from the President I am very proud to be Interim President of JA Canada, an organization that is dedicated to ensuring the future success of Canadian youth by teaching them the critical skills that they need to be financially literate, work ready and entrepreneurially minded. It is gratifying to see JA Canada staff, Charters, and stakeholders from across the country all working together with the common goal of improving the lives of young Canadians. In an economy where the job market is in constant flux, debt levels have reached record level highs, and many youth are unemployed or underemployed, JA continues to provide Canadian youth with the tools and confidence they need to overcome these challenges. I am especially encouraged by the findings of a recent study, there is great support and recognition of the importance of the JA mission to the future of Canadian youth.

This past year included a significant refresh in our signature program, Company Program, the digitization of 3 core programs, hosting over 125 students from our JA Worldwide network for our Next Generation Leadership Forum and the successful roll out of our Royden Richardson Virtual School for Volunteers. JA Canada JA is Canada’s largest youth business education organization, with a national office and 16 Charters and ADMs serving students from coast to coast. We are proud to be part of JA Worldwide, one of the largest global NGOs with a network of over 120 countries. The JA global network is powered by over 400,000 volunteers and reaches 10 million youth annually. To achieve our mission in Canada we work in partnership with educators, volunteers and businesses to educate students about financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.

Young people face the challenge of preparing to compete in an increasingly complex global economy and they need our help. With proven programs delivered by our network of 12,600 classroom mentors, JA Canada is providing young people with the real-world skills they need to expand their reach. Our programs address important lessons including how to manage money, how to set and achieve goals, how to prepare for a career, and how to open and run a business. During the 2015/16 fiscal year, 9,536 JA programs were delivered to students across Canada. JA Canada also continued its work on program development projects and local initiatives in order to ensure that we continue to offer relevant and engaging learning experiences.

2015-16 Highlights To kick off the 2015 school year JA Canada launched reimagined versions of our most popular programs —Dollars with Sense, Economics for Success, and Our Business World. Continuing with our program renewal

goals, development work to create a new high school Personal Finance program and digitally enhance the learning experience of elementary students participating in A Business of Our Own. JA Canada is participating in a pilot of the JA USA LMS platform - Cross Knowledge

Digital Strategy update JA is revolutionizing its programs by infusing technology and blended learning into all learning experiences. The foundation for this transformation was established in 2015-16 with the opening of the JA Canada Resource Portal and

the Royden Richardson Virtual School for Volunteers. These online tools will allow us to expand the ways and means volunteers contribute to our goals to reach more students with new approaches.

Achievers at Large During the 2015/16 year, JA Canada invited a number of Achievers and Alumni to participate in various events and opportunities. We’d like to thank these Achievers and Alumni for their participation. Emma Juskovic —Designated JA Achiever at the Canadian Business Hall of Game Announcement Luncheon in November 2015. Emma spoke about the impact of JA and the successful tech company, Sitto, she ran through JA.

Gala Greeters and Openers—A group of Achievers supported the Canadian Business Hall of Fame Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremony by greeting and directing guests during the opening reception, opening the show by speaking about the inspiration and impact of the business role models, and sharing their JA experiences with guests during the dinner.

National Awards & Scholarships Peter Mansbridge Awards As Chief Correspondent at CBC News, Peter Mansbridge has enjoyed a decorated career, receiving many awards for excellence in broadcast journalism. As a longtime supporter of JA, his ongoing support includes two prestigious national JA awards: The Peter Mansbridge Youth Leadership Award, and the Peter Mansbridge Positive Change Award.

This award is given to a student who has demonstrated achievement and commitment to use their voice to make a positive change for their community, world and future generations.

This award is given in recognition of the personal accomplishments and involvement of an Achiever. The recipient has exemplified the values and attributes of successful business and community leaders.

Taylor Manning | Newfoundland

Liat Fainman-Adelman | Ontario

Before joining JA, Taylor Manning was so shy that she wasn’t comfortable placing an order at a restaurant. “JA gave me lots of self-confidence, and leadership, networking and team-building skills I can use in every aspect of my life. I overcame a great personal obstacle – a fear of speaking in front of others, which held me back – and developed into an outgoing and very involved individual.”

As a past Company of the Year Award recipient and Company Program ambassador, Liat Fainman-Adelman used her business savvy to aid Syrian refugees. Her JA company secured sponsors to create welcome packages for incoming refugees. The campaign was a success and garnered media attention on outlets such as Buzzfeed and Goodnet Daily.

Taylor is completed grade 12 at Holy Trinity High School in Torbay, Newfoundland, where she enrolled in both the French immersion and advanced diploma programs. She served on the yearbook and prom committees, and enthusiastically volunteers to help her community and those in need.

Liat, who attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute, has had other business success. She placed first in Ivey Business School’s high school case competition, and also founded her own start-up, SeniorIT (www. seniorIT.ca), which pairs youth with isolated older adults for one-on-one computer tutoring. She has begun studying commerce at Queen’s University.

In her post-secondary endeavours, Taylor plans to pair her love of medical sciences and business at the University of Guelph, where she will take the Biomedical Engineering program and minor in business.

Liat attributes much of her success to JA. “It transformed my life. I feel like I turned into a business leader. To get this experience at such as young age is incredible.”

National Awards & Scholarships Deloitte Inspiration Awards’ Winners A long-time supporter of the JA Canada Awards and Scholarships, Deloitte recognizes talented Achievers through the Deloitte Inspiration Awards. These awards are given to students who have demonstrated thoughtful perspectives and the attributes required to succeed in the workforce.

Deloitte is honoured to recognize the achievements of these outstanding young Canadians. Individually and collectively, they exemplify the leadership qualities that will have a profound impact on the economic and social prosperity of our great country. Tiffany Hou | Vancouver Tiffany Hou has a passion for community service, science and business. She has been involved in the JA Titan program for the past five years and currently organizes her school’s team. In addition to her leadership in JA, she was an active member of her school’s Model United Nations Club, played violin in the school orchestra and is a certified first responder. As a member of her school’s service council she volunteered for the BC Children’s Hospital, Children’s Organ Transplant Society, Convenant House and Destination Imagination. During the weekends, Tiffany enjoys volunteering for Scouts Canada as a leader, giving back to the community, and traveling.

Maude Keyser | Montreal

My name is Maude Keyser, I live in Montreal and I’m really happy to be the Deloitte Inspiration Award’ Winner for 2016. I’m seventeen years old. In secondary 5, I attend College Jeanne Normandin. I can describe myself as being artistic and an intellectual person. I have many passions like school, I’m in the swimming team so I did some competitions and I did also some races. I have a lot of passion like

photography, draw, design and more. I also like sports like swimming and running. I am part of the journal committee at school and I also participate in some school’s events. I also help at our school’s library. And finally, I am proud to be the Vice President of marketing in the Sniffou company of ‘Jeune Entreprise’.

Mairi McKinnon | Halifax Mairi McKinnon finished her final year in the International Baccalaureate Program at Halifax Grammar School in Nova Scotia. Mairi was recently awarded the D & R Sobey Atlantic Scholarship, and now attends the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University. In addition to academic achievements, Mairi has excelled on the basketball court she served the past two years, as captain of her high school varsity basketball team. This year Mairi was president of her JA Company, Gryphon Records. The company produced a professional quality 10-song recording featuring the musical talents of the Halifax Grammar School community. Mairi and her J.A. team donated their company’s profits to their school’s music program as well as a Halifax community-based organization called Youth Art Connection. Mairi has also been



an active volunteer in the broader community of Halifax and has extended her volunteer activities internationally. While in high school, she took part in a medical mission to Tanzania and a Habitat for Humanity build in Guatemala. Mairi credits JA for the opportunity to discover and develop her entrepreneurial spirit and is honoured to be the recipient of the 2016 Deloitte Inspiration Award.

Jordan Williams | Ontario Jordan Williams was born in Kingston, Jamaica but later moved to Toronto and attended Dunlace Public School. He always believed in being respectful, responsible and helping others because of his humble upbringing and these attributes earned him the Principal’s Award for Student Leadership. Jordan then went to Windfields Junior High School where he was enrolled in the IB Middle Years Program and as a result of his impressive community hours, and participation in extracurricular activities he received the Personal Development Award. Jordan attends York Mills C.I. as a grade 12 student where he participated in running events and the Enbridge Gas Distribution sponsored JA Company Program. Jordan’s



dedication and hard work earned him an internal Most Improved Award and was even nominated as JA’s First Year Achiever of the Year by his advisors. Jordan’s passion for giving back inspired him to become a volunteer counsellor at St. Andrews Summer camp and to teach computer literacy to seniors at St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre. In the future, Jordan aims to pursue a career in either physics or actuarial science at the University of Toronto or Waterloo where he hopes to continue positively impacting those around him.

Next Generation Leaders Forum 2015 Each August, youth delegates from around the world gather in Canada for a week-long leadership forum. The Next Generation Leaders Forum (NGL) aims to foster professional development and personal growth amongst youth and helps them build their leadership, creativity, team work and business skills as they solve a real business challenge.

Best experience of my life by far. I took so much out of the conference which will aid me as I become a leader of tomorrow. My confidence and belief in myself grew greatly and I am so happy to have met new friends from around the globe. Will be recommending NGL to everyone so they can apply to go. Community Partners 2015/16 marked another year of strong funding and volunteer support from JA Canada’s generous corporate, foundation, and individual donors. Donor funds flowed across Canada to each of our 16 member Charters in support of critical programs, technology and training for youth. The contributions of our valued supporters also enabled JA Canada to continue our important program development work to ensure JA programming remains fresh, relevant and meaningful for the 21st Century learner. Donors play an increasingly important role as we prepare and migrate our existing JA program content onto digital platforms. We thank each and every one of our donors for investing in the future of our youth! Special acknowledgement is extended to the following national partners for their generosity and ongoing support of JA in Canada. AT&T and Barclays Capital Canada for their support of youth financial literacy programming at JA Central Ontario. CitiFinancial for their generous support of Dollars with Sense for students served by JA Quebec. Deluxe Corporation for their generous gift in support of JA Waterloo, JA New Brunswick and JA Peterborough/Lakeland/Muskoka. With the assistance of Deluxe, these three JA Charters were able to deliver 84 programs to close to 3,400 students.

Economical Insurance Group has provided generous on-going support for the delivery of JA’s Economics for Success Program in 9 of our 16 Charters. This year, 60 Economical volunteers helped deliver 76 programs reaching over 2,100 students. In addition, 50 volunteers from Economical assisted with various special events and activities in the Waterloo area.

As one of JA’s longest standing global partners, GE deployed 129 volunteers to deliver 84 classes to over 2,400 students via JA Work Readiness Programs, the JA Innovation Challenge and the GE Day of Caring. Five JA Charters across Canada benefitted from GE’s generosity. As one of JA’s largest donors in Canada, funding and volunteer participation from HSBC helped us offer 868 Our Business World programs to 21,505 students with the help of 152 HSBC volunteers in 2015/16. This was a dramatic increase in programs and students from the year previous. As we enter year 3 of our 3 year partnership with HSBC, we are confident we will see even larger gains in terms of students and volunteers participating in this integral program that helps grade 5 and 6 students explore how businesses are created and what makes them thrive. Standard Life is applauded for their generous support of financial literacy programs in JA’s Central Ontario and Quebec Charters. TD Bank Group remains a valued partner and one of JA Canada’s largest donors. 2015/16 was year 3 of a tremendous 3 year partnership. This year, 853 TD volunteers donated their time to deliver 736 Dollars with Sense, Economics for Success and Company Program classes to just over 20,000 students. In addition, TD provided a generous contribution to the JA Canada digital strategy. Thank you for your robust and stalwart support TD! Development of the Royden Richardson Virtual School for Volunteers (RRVS) continued in 2015/16 and was officially launched mid-year. The RRVS would not have been possible without the transformational support of The Richardson Foundation. Royden Richardson was a

Community Partners dedicated volunteer with JA Manitoba for many years. To commemorate Royden’s legacy, his family made a significant gift that enabled us to build an online learning and engagement platform for all JA volunteers in Canada JA Canada also extends sincere appreciation to the many individuals who have made significant gifts via our individual major gift program, the Circle of Inspiration. These much needed, undesignated gifts truly help JA with our important work of ensuring students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to succeed in an evolving and competitive global economy. Dedicated volunteers are at the core of JA’s impact on Canadian youth. Our volunteers are generous, talented and inspiring. They come from a variety of backgrounds and share a common passion—educating and inspiring youth to succeed. Our volunteers include professionals who sign up through their organizations’ JA volunteer programs as well as individuals from the community. Volunteers from organizations such as HSBC, TD, RBC, Economical Insurance, and GE generously donate their time to help us

reach Canada’s youth and ensure they are equipped to succeed. JA Canada would like to thank the 12,618 dedicated volunteers who helped us reach 239,737 students across Canada during the 2015/16 year. These hard-working volunteers donated 189,855 hours of their time. Thanks to their dedication and passion, youth across the country received the benefit of JA programs and learned from the professional experiences our volunteers bring to each delivery.

Launch of the RRVS JA Canada leveraged National Volunteer Week to unveil a new and dynamic approach to engaging a dedicated volunteer community. Made possible through a generous gift from the Richardson family, The Royden Richardson Virtual School (RRVS) for volunteers was imagined to maximize reach and provide the necessary baseline training and development of JA volunteers. The platform, dedicated to empowering JA volunteers by enabling them to prepare for their volunteer experience anytime, anywhere, is a core part of JA Canada’s ambitious Digital Strategy, JA Excelerate. The RRVS allows every volunteer to be successful in a dynamic digital environment that provides convenient remote access on demand to all. In this way, JA can grow its volunteer base while continuing to ensure they are successful today and in the years to come. What’s more, the use

of technology provides options to increase the relevance and depth of the volunteer experience provided and to raise their quality and preparedness, and to be responsive in supporting their needs. The end result is a site that is robust and comprehensive, as well as easy to maintain, navigate, and orient. To support the diversity of needs and circumstances of our volunteers, the site supports several media types tailored to various learning styles. We are extremely proud to present a platform that conveys an impression of modernity, engenders excitement to volunteers, and represents educational excellence.

H.E. Miskiman National Leadership Award Each year, JA Canada awards the H.E. Miskiman National Leadership Award to recognize the hard-work and dedication of the remarkable individuals who volunteer their time with JA across the country. The award was inspired and named after H.E. Miskiman, a former president of JA Canada and active JA volunteer. It is awarded to recognize and honour the volunteers who advance the goals of the organization, both locally and nationally. JA Central Ontario and their board representatives were privileged to honour and recognise Russ Robertson for his leadership in the areas of governance, community engagement and financial stability and for his support for the delivery of JA programs.

Russ Robertson began his journey with Junior Achievement in 1977 while working for Arthur Andersen in Toronto, and over the years his support for JA Central Ontario, and the organization as a whole, has steadily grown. His dedication and loyalty to JA, spanning his thirty-eight year involvement is nothing short of inspirational. Throughout his tenure, Russ held multiple high profile roles with JA Central Ontario. These include: Chairing both the Project and Fundraising Committee for several years, Chairing the Board of Directors, and in 2000 transitioning to a member of the Board of Governors where he has been actively engaged to this day. He has consistently leveraged his vast experience and high-profile network in order to raise awareness and financial support for JA. Russ’ selfless dedication of his time and financial support, both personally, and through facilitating corporate partnerships, is one of the key reasons JA Central Ontario has touched the lives of more than one million students in the last 38 years. The impact Russ has had on JA Central Ontario, as well as the whole JA organization, goes above and beyond any expectations for a volunteer. Although Russ is now retired, he continues teaching and shaping our next generation of business leaders.

Our Funding Model As the national office for JA in Canada, JA Canada’s primary responsibilities are: 1) the generation of national fundraising, 2) maintenance of national branding for JA Canada and the JA Canada Foundation, which manages the Order of the Business Hall of Fame; and 3) the research and development of national education programs. JA Charters are responsible for national program delivery and local fundraising activities to support their regional operations. Each Charter is governed by its local board of directors and ensures the maintenance of its own federal charitable status. All Charters comply with terms and conditions of their local licensing agreement signed with JA Canada. Funds raised are used to support national program development and renewal, volunteer support and outreach, marketing

Founded by JA Canada in 1979, The Canadian Business Hall of Fame recognizes and celebrates the lifetime accomplishments of Canada’s most esteemed business leaders by inducting them into the prestigious Order of the Business Hall of Fame. The Order was created to honour inspiring Canadian business leaders and provide role models to youth across the country. Throughout the year, The Canadian Business Hall of Fame holds a variety of events in support of JA Canada, the largest being the annual Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremony. Rick George

Ed Clark retired as Group President and CEO of TD Bank Group on November 1, 2014 after 12 years as CEO. Twice during his tenure, Ed was recognized as one of the world’s 30 Best CEOs by Barron’s Magazine.

Over two decades, Rick George lead Suncor Energy from a small privately held oil sands company worth $1 billion, to being Canada’s largest integrated public energy company valued at $50 billion.

He now serves Premier Kathleen Wynne in the dual capacity of Chair of the Premier’s Advisory Council on Government and Business Advisor. Additionally, Ed sits on a housing task force set up by Toronto Mayor John Tory.

Named “Outstanding CEO of the Year” in 1999, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2007 for his leadership in Canada’s natural resources sector, his efforts to provide economic opportunities to Aboriginal communities, and his commitment to sustainable development.

Ed is a member of the Board of Trustees of US public policy organization, the Brookings Institute. He is also a Director of Thomson Reuters Board.

Linda Hasenfratz

Frank J. Hasenfratz is founder and Chairman of the Board of Linamar Corporation, based in Guelph, Ontario.

Linda Hasenfratz is the Chief Executive Officer of Linamar Corporation. The global manufacturing company, based in Guelph, Ontario, produces highly-engineered products for the vehicle and industrial markets.

He was born in Hungary in 1935, and attended trade and engineering technical schools, while working as a toolmaker and machinist. Mr. Hasenfratz immigrated to Canada in 1957 and was a supervisor at a metal parts company until he formed Linamar in 1966. With his vision, Linamar became a world leader in designing, developing and producing highly-engineered products. Today, Linamar is a diversified global manufacturing company. The company has operating segments serving the vehicle market (powertrain/driveline) and industrial market (machining and assembly, forging, light metal casting, skyjack). Linamar has more than 19,500 employees in 48 manufacturing locations, five R&D centers and 15 sales offices in 14 countries, and generates annual sales of $4.2 billion. Mr. Hasenfratz is member of the Order of Canada, and of the Canadian Manufacturers Hall of Fame. He has also been honoured with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit by the Republic of Hungary He served as President of Linamar until 1999 and CEO until 2002, succeeded in both posts by his daughter Linda. As Chairman, Mr. Hasenfratz continues to focus on productivity improvements and strategic decisions within the company.

Ms. Hasenfratz joined Linamar, the company her father Frank founded, in 1990. She worked her way up from the ground floor, experiencing everything from running a machine to operations management. Since becoming CEO in 2002, Ms. Hasenfratz has grown the company from $800 million in sales to a $4.3 billion enterprise. She has served on several industry and corporate boards, including CIBC, the North American Competitiveness Council, the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, and the Original Equipment Suppliers Association. In addition, she has been a strong advocate for women’s progress in business, through her work with Catalyst Canada and the Women on Boards Advisory Council. Ms. Hasenfratz supports the community through her role on the board of the Royal Ontario Museum, and as the inaugural chair of Guelph General Hospital’s Philanthropy Leadership Cabinet. For her contributions to Canadian business, Ms. Hasenfratz has received honourary degrees from Ryerson University and Wilfrid Laurier University, the International Distinguished Entrepreneur Award from the Asper School of Business at the University of Winnipeg, and the Entrepreneur of the Year Award from Ernst & Young.

Gord Nixon Gordon Nixon was chief executive officer of Royal Bank of Canada from 2001-2014. Mr. Nixon is a director of George Weston Limited, Bell Canada Enterprises, BlackRock Inc. and he sits on the advisory board of KingSett Capital. Mr. Nixon is chairman of MaRS, the Queen’s University Capital Campaign, a director of the Art Gallery of Ontario and has served as a director of a number of organizations in health care and education and is a past chair of the United Way of Greater Toronto. Throughout his career he has been recognized with many honours including twice being included on Barron’s list of the World’s Best CEO’s, and was on Bloomberg’s list of the World’s 50 Most Influential People. Mr. Nixon has been awarded the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario and has Honorary Doctorates of Law from Queen’s University and Dalhousie University.
