NORTH END MUSEUM + KITCHEN INCUBATOR CLIIFTON LIBRARY REDESIGN SKIN + MIRROR SHARED OFFICE INTERIOR BEAVER PONDS NET-ZERO CABIN
NORTH END MUSEUM + KITCHEN INCUBATOR PROMPT: Research, analyze, and diagram a chosen neighborhood (North End, Boston,) and then design a needed and aesthetically similar space. The pre-design process included historical, environmental, and code research. CONCEPT: The needs of this neighborhood had to be balanced by its histor y. The kitchen table- a place to gather, relearn histor y, interact, and break bread- became the essence of the spaces designed. EXECUTION: The concept was stretched over five key spaces in four buildings. The public archives hold a computer database and print material related to the neighborhood and its immigrant communities. The museum is open to the center, so the glass archives are present in ever y exhibit. Three restaurant shells ser ve as kitchen incubators, where young cooks could operate temporarily in the Nor th End without having to invest in a storefront. These spaces are then connected to an open-air walkway, which divides the structure from a current public park and introduces more walkable space.

DEEP ROOTS I believe that design should have deep roots, be they cultural, environmental, or physical. A tree without roots is just a branch in the dirt; architecture without roots is just a structure on a site.
CLIFTON LIBRARY REDESIGN PROMPT: Examine and redesign an existing public library in Clifton, Cincinnati, accommodating for neighborhood and common city needs. Most necessary were specialized reading rooms, computers, and multiple-purpose spaces. The project was executed with an assigned group of four students, each of whom had different work approaches to design and form. CONCEPT: A story book can unfold physically as an object or emotionally as a tale. We wanted our building to unfold like the books it housed. EXECUTION: The final design featured an open central shaft that allowed sunlight down to every level and for passive heating and cooling strategies to alleviate costs. The faรงade reflects the spaces within, moving inwards and outwards along with the changes in floor plan and program. The floors themselves are offset, creating a spatial awareness and adding a formulaity and celebration of books, while interaction and private reading are each encouraged in their own subdivided spaces.

PEOPLE Understanding people is intrisinc to architecture. Its design should not be just be walls and windows, but alsothe space and experiences of the user. Acknowledging and accomodating the people who live in, move through, and walk by is neccessary to designing a excellent building.
SKIN + MIRROR SHARED OFFICE INTERIOR PROMPT: Design an shared interior space in the 5th3rd building, in Cincinnatiâ€™s Fountain Square, given a column grid and fire exit. The two fictional design firms meant to share the space were a fashion design agency (Skin) and a large-scale portrait photographer (Mirror.) CONCEPT: The two individual firms share not only a space, but also a focus on the human body and its portrayal as something more: two different cores sharing a central approach. EXECUTION: The design focuses on rounded, rotating fabric panels and bubbled work zones. Interspersed in these bubbles are movable desks, work tables, and pin-up spaces. Two executive offices and a common room anchor the space on one side, while an outdoor terrace anchors the other. The central circulation artery, a black lacquer strip with a lowered ceiling for utilities, form a display channel dividing the office spaces from each other while allowing for singular or group exhibition of work.

SUSTAINABILITY At this point, sustainable architecture is a necessity. I believe that all design should be a design not just to improve the built environment, but the natural one as well. As much as possible, I believe architecture should fall in line with LEED and Passiv Haus standards, to explore new depths of sustainability, and to make the world a healthier place one floorplan at a time.
BEAVER PONDS NET ZERO MICROCABIN PROMPT: Al and Terry Hershey, founders of Beaver Ponds Environmental Education Center in Fairplay Colorado, selected our studio to design a microcabin near their existing buildings for short-term researchers. The building was to be entirely off-the-grid and be inhabitable during winter, at 12,000 feet. CONCEPT: The concept that developed was one of a microhome that could educate from without and from within. This included introducing sustainable elements that were functional as well as understandable from a distance, and which were not already present at the center. EXECUTION: The final design took the shape of a vertical greenhouse, where sunlight warmed trombe walls, while plants helped to purify the thin air. Energy loads were calculated with energy modeling software such as Solar Scott and QNET. The greenhouse entry leads to a compact cabin, with super insulated walls modelled after Passiv Haus wall sections. Views towards the mountains and existing buildings are celebrated, while materials from the site, including beetlekill wood and glacial till help explain the site through its structure.
