WEEK ONE SELF PROMOTION Problem

Who are you as a designer? Think of this assignment as a creative self-portrait.

self promotion

Solution

I am a storyteller. I work and create to tell different stories of others and myself to greater public.

Object

‘Smoke breaks’ are used to break ice and start small conversations. My self promotion piece takes on the form of matches to create and spark conversation with others. It is a conversation starting kit.

We want to be naughty. Being naughty is being disobedient and badly behaved. Sorry to break it to you, but we’re not an adult video shop. WEEK TWO PROBLEM REFRAMING Problem

Reframe the following design problem into a new one: Visualize the Art Center experience for the new catalogue.

problem reframing

Solution

Art Center’s biggest branding comes from the alumna’s works within and out of school. All art schools have similar images of students and teachers staring at things to “show” the experience of the school. I reframed the problem to target and inspire students not through looking at people in action, but by visualizing what Art Center’s alumni have achieved in the world by making Art Center “Hall of Fame”. Honoring the alumni and inspiring the current and future students.

Object

Photoshopped image of future ACCD Hall of Fame building that is built from the newly purchased USPS building.

problem reframing

week two

Image of ACCD Hall of Fame would be placed on the last page of the catalogue. It is a physical space that provokes current/ future students and faculties to produce works to reach higher status. Serving as the best way of propaganda to accelerate the work being produced by everyone at Art Center. final

WEEK THREE

PATTERN BREAKING Problem

pattern breaking

Create a new concept for a souvenir from LA that truly is truly unique in that it captures the essence of the city but also breaks away from cliches.

Solution

Literal interpretation of a “souvenir from LA”. Hiding the actual “souvenir” object but showing the fact that it still is from LA. Experimenting with plaque that are seen in art museums to mimic the project as fine art piece.

Object

USPS package box that seems as if it’s been sent from LA. Fake plaque that eludes to the box as an art piece.

souvenir from LA

As I was writing down all the patterns, I could not get away from the idea of LA and cars. I started to think about distance and thought about the idea of package on wheels, driving itself to the recipient.

then, it hit me that the USPS packaging box itself is literally a “souvenior from LA. process

WEEK FOUR GARBAGE CHESS SET Problem

Conceptualize a chess game out of repurposed or waste materials from around your house.

chess set

Solution

By being truthful to the nature of the assignment (using only house trash), I wanted to work with coupons from different stores and see how they can create playful game by contrasting different prices. However, I broke the pattern too far and failed to really see the essence of things being in contrasting forces. Maybe sometimes, another man’s trash is just trash.

WEEK FIVE IRRESISTIBLE INVITE Problem

irresistible invite

Design an irresistible invitation to your Halloween Party and produce one invite for each of your classmates. *No digital devices of any kind for production

Solution

Inviting each person at different times through interactive play. Once the person is participating in the game, they are invited to the party. The rules of the game change everyday, letting the invited guests or the participants to expect different challenges per day leading up to the day of the party on Halloween.

Object

12 different envelopes with ambiguous rules to the game that is written on an index card with stamp.

introduction

week five

Reframing the problem, I asked myself: How far do I redefine “invitation”? How far do I redefine “halloween”? How far do I redefine “no-digital”?

WEEK SIX DESIGN WABI SABI Problem

Design an experience using Wabi-Sabi.

Solution

wabi sabi

Showing the “internal beauty of an object being manifested and expressed through different method.

Object

The experience is represented through my personal encounter with my mom and her medicines.

introduction

week six

Thinking back to my experience with medicine and my mom, I was trying to see the inner beauty of the experience I have witnessed. process

wabi sabi pills

My understanding of Wabi Sabi came from thinking about moss as an example. In terms of WabiSabi, moss is not a plant growing on a rock, but it is the internal beauty of rock continuing through the form of moss.

week six

wabi sabi

Through seeing the inner beauty of medicine, repackaging pill/capsule to encourage the users were developed. I was trying to translate the inner beauty of pill (healing of the sickness) to metaphor of new life as seeds.

However, I realized that the essence of the project is not about just medicine as object but my personal memory of medicine. Prototype of delivering message through using medicine to encourage my mom. *Repackaging pills is in progress

WEEK SEVEN

VISION CALIBRATION Problem

Pick a brand (or product/service) that is large but broken. Calibrate their vision.

vision calibration

Solution

I had two experiments with vision calibration. First, I rebranded MTV as “MTV is the only mainstream media that sees you and amateurs with skills equal as real celebrities”. Second rebranding exercise came through studying branding a brandless/no need for brand company, YKK. I rebranded YKK as “YKK is the only object you use that gives you complete authority of starting and ending anything for sure”.

Object

MTV’s zine “Real World” and various advertisement posters for YKK.

introduction

week seven

At the sametime, it is important to note the hipster/insta vintage fetish of our contemporary culture. process

rebranding MTV

MTV has failed to adapt to the world of social media and its vital importance of influencing the audience. Different blogs and web services that allows people to post and watch videos, the world has shifted to a place where regular-person-celebrity-blogger is more popular. People don’t have to tune into MTV for music nor celeb gossip anymore.

week seven

vision calibration

Riding on the hipster fad + social media reality star celeb while keeping traditional concept of Real World, MTV is rebranding itself in forms of publication to promote change to their tone change.

Real World, a Journal is a monthly printed pamphlet holding competitions in music, fashion, and photography. It displays works from REAL PEOPLE, REAL WORLD. You are the celebrity on MTV. MTV does not become a publication company, but by using the journal, vintage obsessed people gets drawn in closer. The journal is there to set the tone of newly branded MTV. final

week seven

Then I asked myself, “How do you rebrand a product/company that everyone uses but is not branded”?

YKK, “The Beginning and the End” The branding of YKK gives people authority and believe that they are the finishers, completers, and the punctuation. everything is tidy, set, complete, and straight, “good-to-go”when you zip with YKK.

PERSPECTIVE SHIFT Problem

perspective shift

Design a piggy bank using a perspective that is different from your own view point. This “perspective shift” can be from anything and everything.

Solution

Using The Little Prince’s perspective, piggy bank was created by collecting pigs. Bank full of piggies for the Little Prince.

Object

Collection of pigs from people who drew pigs for Little Prince’s “piggy bank (bank full of piggies)”.

WEEK NINE REALITY HACKING Problem

Hack into Art Center’s reality by transferring a conceptual design into a stereotypical trans drawing.

reality hacking

Solution

I drew my future tattoo, which is my favorite verse that helps me to be humble. The graphic/typographic design of the verse was done by Niels Bakkerus, whom I met through Tumblr.

Object

Tape drawing that says “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again. There is nothing new under the sun” in front of the department chairs office.

WEEK TEN CREATIVE REMIX

Problem

Remix creativity around a theme that appeals to you. (Do whatever you want, no limits)

creative remix

Solution

Reframing “25th Birthday” as “Quarter life crisis”, using reality hacking and perspective shift to get advices for quarter life crisis by busking (singing in public) and asking people to imagine what they would say to their 25 old selves, finally using __________ strategy to have tangible object for 25th birthday (quarter life crisis).

Object

Work in Progress for final strategy. People’s advices, lyrics, advice booth, advice card, advice gifts are prepared for those who are willing to participate in the activity.

introduction

week ten

Creative remix is a work in progress. So far, I have used problem reframing to redefine 25th birthday as “quarter life crisis”. I then used reality hacking and perspective shift to ask for advice by busking (singing in public) to collect advices on being 25. One more strategy will be used to create a tangible object pertaining to the idea of “quarter life crisis”

quarter life crisis

Gift 1 For quarter life crisis, a pencil is given each year to write about the crisis. By the time you’re at you’re mid life crisis, you can look back to your quarter life crisis to get back on track and feel better.
