01

MARKET ENGAGEMENT

TASK

The students were in a group to work on the main project site - Pasar Sentul Market. The market has explored inside out and all the activities had been recorded. Students had understood how Pasar Sentul market functions from day to night. After the site research & visit, the understanding has been expressed on A1 size montage.

The intention of the montage is to express the old & new development of Pasar Sentul Market through the application of different materials. Some materials applied were collected on site to show the nostalgic & modern sense on site.

PROJECT 1 | DESIGN BY RESEARCH

Critical Review Sentul as a town located close to the city centre with a majority population of Indians is now improving itself with more upcoming developments. There are lots of new developments such as medium cost condominiums, high end skyscrapers, gated and guarded communities and etc. can be found within Sentul.

But then, the traditional cultures of Sentul had been engulfed slowly by the existing of new developments. Most of the market and farm have been slowly replaced by the new development projects. The "Original Face" of Sentul should be preserved at the same time when the town is developing to ensure the new generations are still able to know the meaning and the importance of the traditional culture and its historical stories.

SITE CONTEXT MODEL

TASK

A final plaster site model with scale 1:500 has been produced. The main market building has been taken out as to replace with the new design proposals on later stage.

Through this task, students learnt how the reinforced the plaster model properly with chicken wire mesh & cast the plaster model properly by mixing the plaster & water with correct ratio.

01 TASK

SITE CONTEXT - PROGRAMME -

With the chosen site context, student started to look into the site strategies and proposed program that eventually would complement to the existing Market. All the research done under Project 1 had been reflected.

The new proposed program is food arena & mini event square. This is due to market as a place for people to get fresh food ingredients & fresh food. The mini event square is the key to connect the market with its neighborhood & ensure its activities from day to night. The mini event square can be a place for citizens to exercise (dance, zumba, yoga & etc.) or as an event venue for celebrations, parties, wedding & religion activities.

PROJECT 2 | SITE CONTEXT

02 TASK

SITE VISIT - KUALA TERENGGANU -

From the site walk around Kuala Terengganu, a scene has been captured & the technique of montage has been applied to the chosen scene to develop the understanding towards a market & its architecture value.

The chosen scene was the entrance of Pasar Payang at Kuala Terengganu. It was chosen because the uniqueness of each entrance connecting different sections of Pasar Payang from different directions. These made the interior spaces of the market to be different from each another with different sections. This helped to control the circulation of the visitors with their needs.

FORM-MAKING

TASK

This task required rigorous experimenting with sketches,

roughly

scaled

plan,

sections,

elevations & roughly scaled models (1:500). The proposals were placed to the site plaster model and

with

the

immediate

site

surrounding.

PROJECT 2 | SITE CONTEXT

04

SPATIAL QUALITY

TASK

The existing market is separated into 4 parts & did not seem like one piece from exterior, the only feature connecting them is the small alley in the interior which can only be discovered in the internal spaces of the market. The new proposal is to strengthen the connection of the 4 parts of the market which are indoor, semiindoor & outdoor by using the elevated platform & linked bridge.

PROJECT 3 | THE MARKET

01 TASK

MEASURED DRAWINGS & EXISTING TRADERS

A group task to conduct measured-drawings on the existing building and landscape within the

boundary.

All

existing

interior

space

configuration need to be mapped out.

Students revisited Pasar Sentul Market and spoke to the local existing traders to really understand

how a

market functions. The

synergy of Pasar Sentul Market were mapped out with food diagram, people movement, sectional, conversation, stall kiosk, carbon footprint, scale and etc. in a tangible way.
