Race 2 There was a distinct summer feeling last Saturday for Race 2 of River Teign Rowing Club’s Seine boat Series. Many of the rowers were at the beach early to soak up the sun in preparation for the exertions that would be made later in the evening. The course was set with a start from the end of Teignmouth Pier facing towards Sprey Point and Dawlish. The rowers had to race approximately 1500 metres to a marker buoy out at sea, along to another buoy and past a third, involving a tight turn parallel with Sprey Point to get back to the traditional finish at the green can on the Back Beach. For the first time, there was a break with tradition in the senior races, with the men racing first. As the season progresses, this will be a feature with senior races alternating. There were no surprises as to the winners this week. After their outstanding performance in Race 1, The Royal Standard Men in “Mrs B” continued to leave all behind them, crossing the line in a little over 30 minutes having established a commanding lead by the time they reached the turn buoys. They were followed by last years champions, the Ship Inn Men rowing “Sophie”, with C’oar Blimey finishing third in “Eclipse”, an improvement of four places on thir seventh placed finish last time out. Other crews to improve their placing from the first race were Teignaged Rampage in “Eve C” and the Framing Lot in “Mavis” who finished sixth and eighth respectively. The women’s race was won in 32 minutes by Abs Fab in “Eve C”, who, as they had done in the previous outing, outrowed everyone else by some considerable distance, again establishing an early lead and dominating the field. Uproar came in second in “ Eclipse” as they had done in Race 1, and were joined in third by Hot Pants rowing “Eileen”, who had uncharacteristically been out of the top 3 two weeks ago. FEA came fourth in “Kalusari” and they were followed by Galoar in “Mavis” , who improved one place from the last race. Best improvement however went to Ruddy Oarsome rowing “Mr Christian” gaining six places from last time to finish in 6th place. The Junior crews had three entrants this week, with Boys Under 12’s, Teign Buoys in “Susie Q”, Dashing Dolphins ( Girls Under 14’s) in “Viscount Amery II” and Back Beach Buoys (under 14 boys) in “Eve C” gaining points in their respective categories. A big thank you to Steve and all the staff at the Ness Hotel for hosting the post race socialising. Novice Nights start this week on Wednesday May 14th on the Back Beach. If you fancy a row, do turn up and have a go! Juniors from 6pm (50p), and adults from 7pm (£1).
