Julie Niu Portfolio // 2018

Hello,

My name is Julie and I am currently a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture . My goal as an architecture student is to study and create immersive narrative spaces that highlight human moments, recall memories, and compel physical movement. I intend to explore how the built environment and the tangible experiences it creates can influence, and perhaps alter, our perception of the world. This is a portfolio of my selected works to date. Please enjoy.

Micro Institution.

The proposed project challenges and renounces the traditional aspects and programs of a library and interrogates what modern community spaces should feel and materialize as. It reimagines a library as a structure built for people rather than for books, and instead, the books are stored out of sight and the building is opened up and emphasized to become the exchanging platform for human activity.

Site Context

The urban fabric of St. Clair St. W is primarily composed of a large residential neighbourhood and very few fully accessible public institutions. In response, The Urban Library aims to address and create a space that is entirely welcoming and accessible to all.

Hacker’s Lab Programmatic Diagram

Four volumetric boxes are pushed and stacked into the corner where the books, administration, and a hacker’s lab is stored. A dynamic ramp stretches from the second floor to the third where certain parts are cut leveled to become purposeful spaces such as an auditorium, study area, and computer lab. Books are stored in stacked and movable bookshelves to minimize storage and maximize human occupancy.

The dug-in courtyards on the ground floor provide spaces for interaction and repose while the underside of the ramp above-head casts a pavilion-like experience. The open ground floor is intended for people to meet, c ollaborate, exchange, dance, and share.

Artist’s Residence.

The project is tucked away in a sculpture garden off of the Grand River in Cambridge, ON. Recalling upon memories of peace and serenity, the building is constructed around a miniature Zen garden that is dug down from the wooden deck. The residence plays around the concept of intimacy between the fully accessible park, the semi-public deck, and the privacy of the building itself.

The Dancers Paradise.

The Dancer’s Paradise exists in an alternate world. The dual spaces of the zone are articulated through different styles of dance. The above ground pavilion is organized by classical traits of contemporary dance and ballet, and in contrast, the series of excavated caves below the surface are inspired by hip hop and urban dance culture.

Senbazuru. The proposed space shall utilize Senbazuru as a means of transporting the individual to a serene realm of self reflection. Members of the design team shall fold over a thousand cranes as a symbolic gesture to the Japanese Canadian community — bestowing good health and prosperity to all that enter. Senbazuru is a group of one thousand cranes held together by strings. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods In collaboration with Colin Williams and Salman Rauf.

The House of Cranes

Julie Niu Portfolio // 2018

The installation is composed of three distinct features, a Shoji inspired screen box, a garden of pebbles carved by wooden steps, and lastly, a choreographed dance of intricate paper cranes. The nine meter long structure will be built by attaching a lumber framework to the weighted bed of pebbles, and then pre-fabricated Shoji screens will be nailed into place. After the Powell Street Festival, the installation can be taken down and reassembled at multiple different locations throughout the city, and then eventually, the cranes will be donated to local children hospitals.
