This is our bumper Christmas issue for November/December and I’m pleased to say we are up to 80 – yes 80! – pages for this issue. The success of the magazine is reaching far and wide it seems, with more new advertisers still coming on board, even in the current ‘challenging’ climate. You may have seen Holbrook Pages featured with our printers, Foundry Press in the recent issue of Business Matters, the monthly business paper published with the West Sussex County Times. We are also going to be featured in Francis Maude MP’s newsletter being published shortly – both great PR opportunities for the magazine.

Is There Something In The Water?” By Claire Mitchell, Mum to Oliver 28 months & 7 month old identical twins

Imagine the shock, or surprise (or both!) when you’re told that there’s not one heartbeat but two at your first scan. It’s something that at first is hard to believe and take in, but once you are over the initial “TwinShock”, it’s just all about coping. And that’s what tens of sets of parents in the Horsham area are doing. Did you know that its one of the most likely places in the UK to have twins? In Southwater alone, I have met ten sets of other twins aged one year and under. An occurrence that far exceeds the national average. In Horsham district, there are just fewer than 1,400 live births per annum. Of these, 1.5% would be a twin birth, so you would expect there to be around 20 sets of twins born each year to parents in this area. Of the Horsham area population, Southwater makes up about 10%, so you would expect an average of 2 sets of twins in Southwater per annum. So eleven is quite unbelievable! Exploring this further, identical twins account for 3 in every 1000 births, thereby suggesting that in the Horsham area there would be 4 sets of identical twins born each year. Between August 2008 and July 2009 I know of three sets of identical twins in Southwater alone – all are boys! And based on the national average it would be less than 1.

increases the instance of IVF twins in an area such as this, most being non-identical. The second factor is that many women work and have good careers, thus leaving it later to start and have a family. It is scientifically proven that over 35 years old, a women is more likely to release more than one egg per cycle, thereby resulting in non-identical twins. And finally, having non-identical twins is hereditary and thus once there are nonidentical twins in a family, you’re more likely to have them in subsequent generations, though it is believed that this is passed down the maternal side of the family. For the remainder of us that have identical twins, there may or may not be a family history, although research suggests that this isn’t an influence. In my case I wasn’t over 35, nor had I had any fertility treatment so why did this happen? As our consultant said, it was a completely random event, “just a freak of nature”!

So, why so many? Socioeconomic factors account for most of the phenomenon. Horsham is a prosperous area with good disposable income which means that IVF and other fertility treatments are more affordable to many than it might otherwise be in less affluent areas. 25% of IVF treatments result in multiple births due to both implanted embryos taking and thus 8

Lime Scale Problems And Lime Scale Prevention Paul Thorpe from P.T. Plumbing

Water softeners vs. water descalers If you’re considering doing something about your hard water problem, then please read on. Many people who live in hard water areas may have lime scale problems which reduce the life and increases maintenance costs of appliances, such as, electric showers, irons, kettles, washing machines, dishwashers, boilers; combination boilers are particularly susceptible to lime scale, it can cause poor hot water flow and noise/ kettling within the boiler. Research has shown that renewals and repairs on these appliances can cost the consumer double in a hard water region, when compared to that of a soft water area. Lime scale problems in your water heating system translates into lower heat transfer. Heating your water through lime scale takes longer, this means your water heating costs will keep rising as the scale increases. Whilst lime scale itself is not considered a health hazard, hard water has been known to exasperate eczema and irritate those with sensitive skin conditions. It has also been noted by medical authorities that the mineral content of hard water is beneficial. Most water softeners rely on removing these minerals, thereby removing any associated benefit but electronic water conditioning retains the calcium and minerals in the water. Most of us are familiar with the problems related to hard water, however there is also a plus side. It is now medically accepted that hard water reduces the risk of heart disease and the high calcium content is also beneficial for healthy bones and teeth, particularly in growing children. An electronic water descaler does not alter the chemical composition of your water; therefore the health benefits of consuming hard water are retained - unlike a water softener. Water Softeners Traditional water softeners work by changing the very composition of the hard water through ‘ion-exchange’. This process results in a low-level introduction of sodium (salt) into the water. The cost of water softeners, dependent on size, is generally between £650 and £1,500. Water softeners are relatively expensive to install, requiring plumbing modifications and come with their own set of problems. The salts used in water softeners will cost between £50 and £150 per year; the water is not suitable for babies and some adults to consume; a separate drinking water supply is essential and the effluent water is environmentally unfriendly unlike a water descaler.

00 12

Compared to a water descaler a water softener is far larger and requires a lot more space. Also the salts used in water softeners are bulky and need storage space. Some water softeners are difficult to fill with salt, particularly when in a confined space.

ACCREDITED ELECTRICAL LTD. Consider AEL for all your electrical work including power and lighting installation plus landlord electrical inspections. We are your local company offering a friendly professional service so why not give us a call!

Water Descalers - How do they work Electronic water descalers are the ultimate in water descaling, providing maintenance free hard water solutions and lime scale prevention it will also remove any existing lime scale without the need for chemicals, salts, or a separate drinking water supply, and provide lime scale prevention in the future. The electronic water softening effect does not alter the chemical composition of the water, but achieves all of the advantages of a lime scale free home. A very powerful PIC 16 microprocessor delivers an unparalleled 13000 varying low frequency magnetic pulses per second. It is this action that neutralises the calcium carbonate particles ability to adhere and form lime scale. As the treated water flows through your plumbing system the water descaler will reverse the lime scale forming process, disintegrating the build-up already present, and offer future lime scale prevention.

The whole unit is no bigger than a packet of sugar, costs around £260, has a life time guarantee and has running costs of approximately £1.30 a year!!!. The benefits of water softening In general the following effects will be observed: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Shampoos, conditioners, and soaps rinse easily using less water Surfaces in contact with water will be easier to clean If clear of scale, shower heads, taps etc: will not become re-contaminated Washing machines will require less powder Dishwashers need less salt - if any Hair and skin feels softer and healthier Less shampoo, conditioner, detergents, fabric conditioners and soaps will be needed Softer clothes and fabrics as fibres become scale free Lime scale that has formed on WC’s and taps etc will start to soften, and can be easily removed and will not reappear Water flow may start to increase (in circumstances where very heavy deposits existed) Can help suffers of eczema, psoriasis and dry skin Streak free car cleaning Extended life of water appliances and reduced maintenance costs Kinder to skin and hair - ideal for babies Saves energy - lower water heating costs Removes existing scale

National Curry Week & National Eating-Out Week

Top Coat Decor

Help raise much-needed funds for the world’s poor and hungry in a fun, positive way with National Curry Week & National Eating-Out Week 2009. This takes place from 22nd - 28th November 2009 with all proceeds going to Oxfam.

Qualified Painter and Decorator

Restaurants, pubs, caterers, schools, gatherings - everyone is welcome to enjoy a week of fun, food and fundraising to help Oxfam tackle poverty and suffering across South Asia. The 2009 National Curry Week invites Indian restaurants, caterers, pubs, canteens etc, all over Britain to celebrate the cuisine and culture with special dinners, record-breaking attempts, raffles, auctions and more, all in aid of contributing to the alleviation of poverty and suffering in South Asia. National Eating-Out Week operates in tandem with National Curry Week and enables non-curry restaurants to join in the fun and fund raising. For restaurants that choose to take part, they are being asked to “Take the £1 a Plate Pledge” meaning that they will send Oxfam a minimum of £1 per plate of a designated dish sold during this special week. 18

Schools are getting involved by having a “mufti day” during or close to the week to raise funds for the official National Curry Week charity OXFAM. The word Mufti has Indian origins; according to Hobson Jobson The Anglo Indian Dictionary published 1886 Mufty or Mufti: (a) An expounder of the Mahommedan Law, the utterer of the futwa (Futwah). The Mufti is above the Kazi who carries out the judgment. (In Indian Civil Service in 18th century) (b) A slang phrase in the British army for ‘plain clothes’ taken from (a) above and originally applied to the attire of dressing-gown, smoking-cap and slippers like the Oriental dress of the Mufti in Moliere’s Bourgeois Gentilhomme.

In modern times this word is used for the wearing of personal clothes rather than school uniform in schools throughout Britain in order to raise funds for charity or the school. So help do your bit to help fight world hunger by pledging as much as you can while taking the opportunity to eat out in November and send at least £1 per person to Oxfam to support the week. Stress Management Makes Its Mark A drive to combat stress at work has gained a resounding thumbs up from staff and bosses at a local print company. Stress management sessions involving neck and shoulder massage have proved a big hit at Foundry Press in Horsham, who brought in a qualified personal trainer and sports massage therapist to assess their effectiveness. “Print is a stressful business,” says Foundry’s director Bruce Phillips. “Clients want the job yesterday and staff are therefore working to full capacity all the time and this can be particularly stressful.”

“Maintaining good posture for desk-bound staff is important for several reasons,” adds Stuart. “They can feel more comfortable, are more alert and more motivated and therefore are more likely to perform more efficiently during the day.”

Absenteeism due to stress-induced conditions costs British business billions a year – one reason why more bosses are starting to realise that workforce health and welfare is crucial in maintaining corporate performance. Bruce had heard that stress management programmes could benefit companies, so called in local personal trainer Stuart Wilkinson to run a short pilot scheme at the Foundry Lane works.

When times are tough, bosses may shy away from another `overhead` such as stress management, but that’s false economy, Stuart believes. “This is an investment in staff, rather than purely an expense,” he argues. “A more alert, more motivated workforce has got to be good for the bottom line. “A ten or fifteen minute weekly massage, at times to suit the company and staff, can make a big difference in so many ways.”

“Everyone suffers from stress,” says Stuart, “but not everyone is aware of it. Stress can build up in the neck and shoulders, creating headaches, tiredness and sometimes muscle aches and pains.

Charity Fashion Show Held at The Holbrook Club A fabulous evening was had by all who attended a Fashion Show held recently at the Holbrook Club. Organised by Alice Chambers of The Essence (www.theessenceof.co.uk), the show was held to raise much needed funds for CHASE, the hospice care charity for children based near Guildford. Across South West London, Surrey and Sussex, CHASE supports families with children who are not expected to reach their 19th birthday. They offer nursing, practical and emotional support to help them make the very best of their time together, however long that may be. It supports both families in their own homes and communities and at their children’s hospice, Christopher’s. Part of the evening was also devoted to a charity auction and raffle with prizes including a week at a chalet in the French alps, a hot air balloon ride, meal voucher donated by the Half Moon at Warninglid and a 3 month membership to the Holbrook Club. A total of £1,260 was raised and Alice and everyone involved was absolutely delighted. Alice organises several fashion shows for CHASE each year and modelling is undertaken by her friends and family to show clothes on ‘real’ women’s bodies, rather than stick-thin mannequins. Several Horsham ‘business babes’ took part including Katrina Smith who runs True Colours Interiors, Sarah Riley from Utility Warehouse and Debbie Pickles from Beauty Works. Hair was styled by some of the girls from Studio 2 (www.studio2horsham.co.uk ) in Coltsfoot Drive and photos were taken by local photographer, Andrea Sarlo (www.andreasarlo.co.uk). Alice runs The Essence in Horsham whereby you can browse amongst her interesting and colourful clothes, together with accessories, but with no obligation to buy, but in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. For further information or to book an appointment, please call Alice on 0800 8406494/07968 745719 If you would like further information on CHASE, their website is www.chasecare.org.uk 26

Open House Viewings – What Are They And How Do They Work? Whether you are actively looking for property at the moment, or just taking a casual glance through the pages of the local property paper, I am sure you will have noticed that an increasing number of properties are being marketed with the offer of an “Open House” viewing.

OPEUNSE HOnOe DaytSioalne

deadlines. On the following Monday, we then contact all parties to confirm offers, and then liaise with the vendor to ensure that the best buyer and price is achieved.”

We asked Peter Maskell - Director of Brock Taylor – who specialise in selling properties through this format, if he could offer an explanation and overview of both the process and effectiveness of the procedure. We joined Peter at his busy office in East Street for an insight into Open Houses and were left a convert of this convenient solution to moving. First, Peter commented on what happens in an Open House sale and why does it differ from the standard marketing procedure. “In principal, we follow the same process of marketing a property, although the activity and viewings are condensed into a shorter period of time, meaning the marketing is more intense over a period of 2/3 weeks, with extensive advertising and viewings then booked into a specific block of time on a Saturday or Sunday. Then on the predetermined day, two experienced members of the sales team will attend the house and conduct all the viewings. We also hand out documentation giving direction about how offers should be submitted, with any relevant 40

He continued, “We know that the convenience and improved level of organisation of these events mean that our vendors love them. There are a number of reasons for this although some of the main ones are; they can get the house ready for the big day, so that it looks at its best – rather than having to fly round with a Hoover with 5 minutes notice. In addition, if the property is priced and marketed correctly, you only have to get the house tidied once!. By booking all the viewings into a limited period of time, it creates a competitive environment, which will help you get the best price.” As to their effectiveness Peter offered this sound advice “By putting the words Open House on an advert this does not wave a magic wand over the sale, or guarantee that you will find a buyer. Having managed Open Houses in this area and previously in Hampshire & Surrey, for the past 5 years, I have established a specific schedule of events and innovative marketing that almost guarantee that we maximise exposure and generate a high volume of viewings”.

If you are interested in finding out whether your property would be suitable to host an Open House or have any other questions relating to property, then Peter is happy to assist, so feel free to pop in and see him in East Street or call him on 01403 272022.

National Women’s Register NWR is a friendly organisation and is for any livelyminded woman who likes to talk........we meet informally for discussion and debate. Never heard of it? Neither have most people it seems, but the lucky ones that have discovered the organisation find it is a lifesaver. We plan the programme ourselves so it is up to each of us to promote something that interests us. Anyone can contribute a little bit of research to an evening or maybe one or two of us put together some information gleaned from our past life or work. Whatever the topic, Renee MacKintosh, the colour purple, the history of the Olympics, icons of our age, we always come away with a head full of information.

As we are part of a national organisation there is an annual membership fee of £16 which also provides opportunities to take part in the annual National Conference, telephone treasure trails, national debates, local quizzes, day conferences and more!

There is also a book group that runs alongside the fortnightly meetings. Great for encouraging you to seek out some new authors and find out a little more about them.

We meet in each other’s homes on Thursday evenings at 8pm. For more information tel: 01403 262506 www.nwr.org.uk Registered Charity 295198

If you enjoy discussion, look forward to meeting new people and are prepared to give anything a go then why not give us a ring. All women are welcome: single, married, divorced, widowed, working or retired. All just come as they are and find the conversation never dries up.

Light Up A Child’s Christmas With The NSPCC We have recently upgraded from electrical portable machines to a brand new *Truck Mounted Cleaning System* (Prochem Blazer X1). This gives us total self sufficiency whilst cleaning carpets or upholstery as work can be carried out at up to 200ft from the parked van with no loss of power or suction, the unit also has its own heated water source and chemical feed, so cleaning is uninterrupted with four times the power of a portable machine, carpets are left dry within an hour. This machine gives the most outstanding results, the real “Rolls Royce of cleans”.

Add softened butter and mix until the butter is evenly combined. Pour into a bowl and allow to cool, preferably overnight. 5. But if you feel full of energy and zest for life, happy and excited about the opportunities and experiences every new day brings, everything seems possible. Most people sit somewhere in the middle, settling for the status quo, doubting their

Students Learn About FTSE100 Without Financial Risk Holy Trinity teams took first and second place in the 2008/9 Investment Challenge 100 run by Horsham District Business Education Partnership. Ann Swain, HDBEP Board member and Director of the Business Resource Centre, outlined how, despite difficult trading conditions, both teams, lat and mkballstars, learnt how to take advantage of the volatile stock market and by keeping a close eye on short term trends in share prices, and real commitment to the Challenge, increased their nominal £20,000 initial investment to over £600,000. The competition between the two teams was fierce right up until the last possible moment.

Members of the winning team, lat, from Holy Trinity with Lord Lytton, Keith Wilkins and Michael Colacicco

“IC100 is an addictive share market simulation and is a brilliant way to learn about the FTSE 100 without making a real investment” said Troy, a member of the winning team, lat. The 2009/10 Investment Challenge 100 is seeking teams of students who want to participate this year and experience for themselves the ups and downs of financial investment in business. “It has been a pleasure to be involved in this year’s Investment Challenge. The level of engagement from the students was excellent and the experience they have gained of the financial markets is invaluable”. Said David Charbit, Teacher at Holy Trinity School, Crawley. 64

Teams from Horsham schools, The College of Richard Collyer and Forest Community School, received certificates for their participation and commitment at the Awards event chaired by Michael Colacicco of Harwood International, HCCI Member. John Lytton, President of Horsham Chamber of Commerce and Industry emphasised the importance of investment in business and congratulated them on their commitment and enthusiasm. In such difficult trading conditions all those students who had remained committed and continued to trade for the whole six months deserved to be recognised. Keith Wilkins, Chairman of Horsham District Council, presented trophies and cheques to the students of both teams as well as certificates to teams who traded throughout the competition. IC100 is run for HDBEP by the Business Resource Centre who developed the programme from its initial concept by Peter Beckham, former Chairman of Horsham Chamber of Commerce and Industry and of HDBEP.

The Perfect Christmas Dinner

even simply make your stuffing seperately and not stuff at all. We sometimes use a sausagemeat mixture and stuff between the skin and breast to prevent drying out and retain moisture. The choice is yours! Pre heat the oven @ 170ºC/ 325ºF gas mark 3 Lightly fry in a little oil breast down on a medium heat for a couple of minutes to seal in juices. Then tie legs and tuck the wingtips under the bird. Spread soft butter all over bird. Place in to roasting tin and pour on oil. Cover the whole tin with foil leaving space around the bird. Place tin in centre of the oven. Roast for 20min per 450g. So this bird will take about 3 hours. Regularly baste the bird by spooning the juices and oils in the bottom of the roasting pan over the bird. This will enhance the flavour and moistness of the meat. To test to see that the bird is cooked, cut in to the thigh deep to the bone and watch the juices. If they are clear then we’re done. If they look slightly reddish or muggy, continue cooking. Or if you have a cooking thermometer probe thigh to the bone and the temperature should be a above 75 ºC. Once done, rest the bird under the foil for 20-30 minutes. This helps to firm meat and help when carving.

Roast Turkey With A Chestnut Stuffing That good old Christmas turkey is a wonderful dish we all love to eat, but fear cooking. Here is how we at Lost Monkey Café & Scarlet Dining keep the bird succulent and give extra flavour. Serves 8

Sample of Menu:

Traditional Mince Pies

Makes approx 12 Ingredients • 225g/8oz shortcrust pastry • 225g/8oz mincemeat • 3 tbsp brandy • 6 tbsp milk • 2 tbsp caster sugar Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas mark 6 and very lightly grease 2-3 bun trays. On a floured surface, roll out 3/4 of the pastry to approximately 6mm/1/4 inch thickness then cut 12 rounds out with a 6cm/2 1/2 inch cutter. Use these rounds to line the bun trays. In a bowl, mix together the mincemeat and brandy until well blended. Divide the mincemeat between the pastry shells, pressing down lightly. Roll out the remaining pastry and using a 5cm/2inch pastry cutter, cut out 12 circles for the tops of the pies. Place the milk in a shallow bowl and dip the smaller pastry circles in the milk and cover each of the filled pies with a top. Use a fork to press the edges of each pie firmly together to seal then sprinkle with a little caster sugar. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until golden. Serve hot or cold as a dessert with cream, custard or brandy butter. Alternatively serve at tea-time.

For the gravy, spoon off the excess fat from roasting pan reserving as much juice as possible. Pour in wine and lightly boil on the stove then add stock. Mix flour with a little of the fat you just reserved to form a paste. Slowly add paste to boiling stock and wine. I like to put one bay leaf and a sprig of fresh thyme to my gravy. You will see the gravy thicken so turn down heat and simmer for a couple of minutes before adding a little salt and pepper to taste. Strain with a fine sieve and serve with your tasty bird.

1 oven ready turkey 3.6/4.5kg 90g butter, (soft) 3 tablespoons of good quality oil (olive) Stuffing 450g fresh chestnuts or 200g pre prepped 20g butter 1/2 diced onion 2 celery sticks diced 10 apricots small diced 5 sage leaves fine chopped 1 free range egg salt & pepper Gravy 700ml good quality stock (liquid stock or stock pot from the supermarket is ok if you don’t make your own. Try to avoid stock cubes) 1 tablespoon flour 1.5 glasses of white wine First make stuffing for the bird. If using fresh chestnuts peel first, try and get the whole family especially the kids involved, many hands make light work. Then lightly boil in the stock for 15/20 min until tender. Strain but reserve stock for gravy later. Heat butter on a low heat and add onion & celery. Lightly fry for 5 min until translucent and soft. Then mix with chestnuts, apricots, sage salt and pepper. Allow to cool before adding the egg. Mix well. Stuff neck cavity of bird and not the whole large cavity. This will allow the bird to cook from the inside instead of just the outside which drys out the breast. Secure the neck flap with a skewer. You can

Useful tips With a pre heated oven at 170ºC/ 325ºF Gas mark 3, follow these recommended time guides. 2.5/3.5 kg bird 21/2-3 hours 3.5/4.5 kg bird 3-31/2 hours 4.5/5.4 kg bird 31/2-4 hours 5.4/6.3 kg bird 4-41/2 hours 6.3/7.2 kg bird 41/2-5 hours 7.2/8.1 kg bird 4-51/2 hours 450g /1lb of oven ready bird should be plenty for 1 person thus a 9kg bird is 20 helpings Always try to buy a hen rather than a cock turkey. We recommend any bronze variety, specifically the Norfolk bronze. Allow 48 hours to thaw. Always defrost in a refrigerator not at ambient room temperature, this with prevent bacteria from multiplying and making your guests sick. Good Luck, Merry Christmas and Happy Cooking from all at Lost Monkey Cafe & Scarlet Dining.

Why Christmas? There is something magical about Christmas. Snow filled scenes, stockings bursting with presents, roaring log fires, perfect nativity scenes, school Christmas concerts and smiling happy families. The reality of Christmas though can be a little different. The shops can become overcrowded with fraught shoppers hunting for the perfect present. There can be overindulgence with people eating and drinking far too much. A nine year old boy once wrote: “I know Christmas should be a religious time, but to me Christmas is a time for the necessities of life such as food, booze and presents.” Some people buy presents others do not need with money they have not got. Others can become over demanding about what they want. There is a story of a doting father who asked his daughter what she might like for Christmas. Shyly she announced that she would like a baby brother. Imagine her delight when on Christmas Eve when her mother returned from hospital on Christmas Eve having given birth to a baby boy. When the father asked the same question the following year there was no hesitation. “If it wouldn’t be too uncomfortable for Mummy, I would like a pony!”

For some Christmas becomes too much. Suicide rates increase, marriages fall apart and family feuds begin. It has been estimated that there will be 3 million family rows at Christmas. Anthony Storr, a psychiatrist wrote about Christmas, “Cheer up,” he said, “it’s soon over” and finished by saying: “Remember that Christmas, although recurrent, doesn’t last forever.” So what is the point or have we missed the point of Christmas? The well known author C.S. Lewis once said that at Christmas, we celebrate the “central event in the history of the earth – the very thing the whole story has been about.” He was referring to the birth of Jesus Christ. Amidst all the celebrations and tensions of Christmas why not explore whether there is a deeper meaning to our lives and maybe reflect once again about the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
