Welcome to our second edition of Bergen Fringe Festival! We are so excited to present these exciting and groundbreaking productions delivered by both unestablished and professional artists. Local and international theatre companies, dancers, musicians, comedians and everyone in between will take upon our beautiful city’s stages and streets. They [the artists] will challenge you; the Norwegian audience to take risks and experience the unconventional and often strange universe within the Fringe Festival. All in one night you will laugh, cry, be astonished and challenged and not at least be entertained; with 18 productions performed throughout some of our favorite stages across Bergen. We recommend you pick up your pen and paper to create your own schedule to make the most of what the festival is offering.   No, a Fringe Festival is not a hairdresser’s competition. This question was once presented by a journalist to our fringe colleagues at Stockholm fringe Festival. But was is a Fringe Festival? We believe the more accurate question is; what a Fringe Festival isn’t. There are around 200 Fringe Festivals across the world, and the diversity within the worlds Fringe community is huge.   A Fringe Festival is a multidisciplinary stage performance festival showcasing an assortment of productions. Shows presented by unestablished and professional artists from across the world often created as a response based on the global political and social landscapes. A Fringe Festival therefore serves as a platform where the artist and audience have the opportunity to voice their reactions. But it’s not all political and social debates. A Fringe Festival also serves as a meeting point, it strives to bring communities together. As Holly Lombardo (World Fringe) so nicely put it in last year’s program introduction; “Fringes are an important part of the cultural food chain presenting the stars of the future to their audiences.   They reflect the cities and towns in which they reside, embracing the history and the future, of its venues, performers and personalities locally, nationally and internationally.” Kind regards, Line Jensen Festival Coordinator

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which is the biggest, was established in 1947. Back then it was free theatre groups response to the lack of platforms to share their work, not being allowed to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival. They took upon the streets. Since, the concept has been adopted all over the world, showcasing approximately 170 thousand performers in 60.000 free and ticketed events. We are so pleased to put Norway on the Fringe map and partake in the biggest stage performance community in the world.

Leena Harjunpää Co Finland Dance, Performance Adults, and young people above 14 years.

”I got tired of answering my relatives’ wishful inquiries about when I was planning to move on to the career path of a mother and wife, so I decided to make their wish come true in my own way. Literally. So I am going to marry myself. I welcome you to celebrate with me!”

All By Myself is Leena Harjunpää’s contemporary dance solo, in which the performer decides to marry only herself despite the pressure from her environment. The piece examines the need for and the significance of the wedding institution in our modern society. The performance sheds a whole new light on wedding traditions. In this party the bride takes her own space, organizes her own ceremony, paints her soul’s landscape with her dancing, makes her own speeches and creates her own tradition-enriching program. In addition to contemporary dance the bride does a voguing dance routine as the first dance. As is characteristic of Harjunpää, this visual, dance-oriented, perceptive and even comical piece cuts into the behavioral patterns of people.

Two stories are running parallel to each other, the private story of a woman post sex and the political story of a woman postcolonialism. Combining electro beats with lyrical prose, JOY is a exploration into the politics of heritage and sexuality. Through one performing body and one musician playing a live electronic soundscape, they make a concert out of rejection, desire and rage. The creation of JOY was an investigation into Strindberg’s Miss Julie, specifically the moment she returns to the kitchen having slept with Jean.   Said about the performance: JOY is relentless, high-powered theatre that flits between experimental spoken word and performance art, the body always foregrounded.’

Isolated and alone, a woman with postnatal depression is locked in a room with nothing but her thoughts and four walls covered with a strange wallpaper. This psychological horror is in a sense a solo show, but as she discovers another woman trapped behind the wallpaper, the show develops into a desperate duet.   Depending on which side of the audience you’re on, you get the story told either by an actress as the isolated woman, or by a dancer as the woman behind the walls. The horror is based on the audience sharing what it feels like to be extremely vulnerable and powerless. The performance questions the arrogance of those in power, the effects of isolation, the dangers of a lack of understanding.   The Yellow Wallpaper is a psychological horror originally written as a short story in 1892 by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The preformance premiered 2. August at Harastølen, a condemned tuberculosis asylum.

Andre dramatiske verk av Eve Ensler inkluderer The Treatment, Necessary Targets, Ladies, Lemonade, Extraordinary Measures, Mango og Here.

The Vagina monologue is based upon interviews with over 200 - women in all ages and social condition and their relationship to their private parts. These interviews are found in terms of monologues which in terms questions the nature of women: how does it make you feel having a vagina, how does the vagina determine the daily structure of a women, what is the key of female orgasm? And how does the vagina affect the women’s lives? These question amongst others will arise as we consider the problems around vaginal hair growth, shame, erotic pleasure, body image, rape, orgasm and birth, these are all themes in which this show will deconstruct, problematize and enlighten.   When Eve Ensler herself premiered with The Vagina monologs in 1996, she proclaimed the shows as a celebration to the vagina as well as a important step moving forward to a society without violence towards women. The Vagina Monologues has been translated to over 48 languages and performed in over 140 countries. Other playwrights by Eve Ensler includes The Treatment, Necessary Targets, Ladies Lemonade, Extraordinary Measures, Mango and Here.
