01 Location: Winnipeg, Canada Status: Unbuilt Year: 2015

The process of construction and structural transformation, like seasons in a forest, is a nostalgic ritual of beginning and ending. The temporary/permanent opposition is probably at its strongest in this project: A temporary material on a temporary ice surface in a permanent yet transient setting. The structure of a wooden frame is veiled by a mesh and then sprayed with water, which will freeze due to the cold temperature. Inside, three hanging bowls of fire light the structure, glowing like warm starlight. Fire is inherently linked to the forest, it is 1 _Plan and Sections, Digital Media

fuel for the fire, and starlight is fuel for the forest. The flame projects its starlight back onto the open urban space, and, in the end, reflects it back to the stars. The atmosphere within the structure holds a unique sensorial environment: the crackle of a fire suspends the silence, which is accompanied by the sound of steps on a snowy gravel floor. With Spring’s thaw the cage of the structure will remain while the rest will sink to the bottom of the river. All that is left is the beauty of the experience that it gave to those who witnessed it. 2 _Exploded Axonometric, Digital Media 3 _Material and Light Study, insect screet and sprayed hot water

The proposal is born by understanding the phenomenology of these patterns and relationships – the study of urban morphology, and how physical and cultural forces have influenced the making of cities - a comprehensive design project of multiple SECTIONunit D-D housing and public programs. Considering the role of the public realm for the full range of inhabitants, residents and visitors, and how this next layer of interventions will shape the development of the city in the future.

SECTION B - B

Cities are built from layers of intention. Each generation adds and subtracts according to their imperatives and values. Over time, the city becomes a palimpsest revealing to the careful reader the stories that have shaped it. Constructed urban patterns are forged by a complete range of physical conditions – geologic, hydrologic, topographic, and climatic – as well as by cultural, socio-economic, and political contexts. These patterns are sustained by infrastructure, or networks of relationships, both visible and invisible, which facilitate the physical and social life of the city.

in search of emptiness The project comes out of the need stitching a public place in the city for encounters in order to choreograph architectural education and practice in visual arts, music, drama, dance and literature. The architecture is an object of relationships between two main concepts: stereotomic and tectonic. Both create different spaces and pro1 _Conceptual drawing, Ink on Paper

grams, related to their architectural qualities. The major elements of the space are void, light and mass. When the mass is fractured creates a void. The void works as patio, as the soul of the architecture and collective space, as an ordering agent shaped by light, air and time. The void holds the collection of fragments. 2 _Model study defining the emptiness, Ink on Clay 3 _Architectural Operations, Ink on Paper

Story_ in search of emptyness I sit on my window, it faces the landscape. I open my window and let her go in. She is the same, but changes with time. I can look at her, feel her, hear her and even smell her; in different ways every morning I see her, every night I see her. The Full Moon can be seen in the Summerwoods. The Sunrays cracks and begin to hit the streets. I try to stay fresh; I open my window, protected and refreshed by the air and the shades of the trees. People cross the river on a boat. The light hits and reflects on the water. I discover a world upside down. Leafs dance and dance covering the city and other things. Moonlit light, crickets sing in the stone. I open my window. The autumn wind moves the blinds and my heart. Cracks!! Cracks of light. Cracks of the city. Endless cracks! 4 _Light shaping the void | void (re)incerted in the architecture, Cardboard 5 _Light and space study in model, Sunlight and Cardboard

absence as presence Absence is something that had presence and has ceased to exist. There are two types of absence applied to the matter, they are born from the same idea: absence by subtraction and absence by non-construction.

Endless corridors, Endless patios, the next turn brings a new perspective, a new patio. And, at the end of the journey, a glance of its presence.

Edge condition

The absence by subtraction has more emphasis on the matter than without it. A wall is more massive with a window than without it, the own absence

makes us be conscious, as counterpoint, of the presence of the matter (and vice versa).

5

When the absence is not constructed, the landscape is the one that fills it with its presence. Thus, landscape has presence in the mass and, the mass has presence in the landscape, this remarks the presence of what has never been there before and, at the same time, always has been.

Three cedar lumber pieces of 1” x 4” x 8 ‘ rooted to the ground and projected to the sky. On its base, a vessel collecting the ashes of its burial. A materialization and immaterialization of our lives; we are passing away. We embodied the material itself. The ritual embodies a consummation of the individual and consecrates the place. In order to control the breathing of the fire, and therefore, its burning rate, openings were created with stones in-between pieces. Wind, openings, bracings, and directionality, marked its consequences on the material. The edge conditions exposes this marks. Paradoxically, burning wood helps to preserve the piece. By exposing one side to fire, and leaving the other surface (without being burned) exposed to the open weather, it creates a different time-lapse of consummation of the material.

ashes to ashes The furnace is a threshold to embody the ritual of passing away. To embody the tool means to internalize the nature of the material, eventually turning oneself, by ritual, into our own product. Our sense of place and being part of that place is what defines us as human beings; it has been disconnected from our way of experiencing the world.

How can we structure our being and the architecture as we structure our world? How do we project ourselves into the space and how do the space projects back to us? “Ashes to ashes” operates between the material and immaterial. We are ashes to ashes, dust to dust. 2 1 _Mapping the breathing of the fire after 1 minute, Cedar and Ashes

park tae-joon memorial hall Park Tae-Joon (October 24, 1927 – December 13, 2011) was a South Korean general, politician, economic leader and author. He founded POSCO, which has been the world’s leading iron company for 25 years. As a politician, he served as prime minister. Park Tae-Joon was awarded several times for contributing to Korean national economy, education, and political developments. The Korean National commission also remade 6 out of his 7 medals (2 Chungmugong medals, 3 Hwarangmugong medals, Mugunghwa medal, Gumtap-industry medal) as a memorial to him.

BCHO was commissioned to design/ built a Memorial Hall to commemorate Park Tae-Joon. The performance of the project, besides of being a Memorial Hall, is of a Public Library, located in Busan, Korea, Park TaeJoon’s hometown. The gross floor area of the project is 10.420sq-ft. This Memorial Hall is showcasing the beautiful cultural aspect of Korea’s hero to the world. It is designed with an internal patio that organizes the overall project; this patio is a reflection on Korea’s traditional architecture and natural Landscape, which encloses a unique atmosphere of tribute.

07 Project: Prefab House Location: Montana, USA Client: KIA Motors Status: Under construction Design team: Byoung Soo Cho, Julian Uribe, Costantino Di Sambuy, Prefab Research unit - Bozeman, Montana. Year: 2014 In charge of the modular system variables design. In charge of running meetings with contractors. In charge of the research of materials and prefabricated building systems for optimizing the construction. In charge of Construction Documents.

prefab house Starting with two simple rectangles: 14’ x 20’ (kitchen and dining room space) and 14’ x 15’ (a bedroom with bathroom, or a living room), one or two opposing corners are cut to give variety. These cuts allow openings, connection corridors, and an infinite possibility of assemblies from a set of modules that serves specific programs mandatory for the purpose of living.

The project is designed to respond to different contects and different user necessities. We contextualized it in a neighborhood in Bozeman, Montana. The project transformed and adapted itself, not only because of the user needs, but also to the neighborhood and its habitants. A greening became an important device in this Prefab Alley-House, harmonizing with the local landscape and surrounding visuals.

design, optimization and fabrication

The DOF studio aims to reconnect architecture back to real-life processes, it aims to reconnect with materiality, with tools and with both local and global techniques. We seek to empower design by informing its process through diverse conceptual and digital resources, thus obtaining results of greater depth, effectiveness and efficiency. Here, technology is understood not as the end, but as the means to achieve an architecture that performs optimally. The confrontation of new

design tools of amazing capabilities, with a structured and coherent conceptual method, enables us to respond to problems objectively and accurately. The purpose of the course is to harness the technology inherent to these tools to address immediate contextual specific needs with close control, urging an integral response within a deeper underlying structure of polarity: expression vs. technology.

09 Class: Outside The Guidelines Location: Rhode Island School of Design, USA Teaching: Kristin Jones, Julian Uribe Year: 2014 In charge of preparing the class weekly in collaboration with Kristin Jones. In charge of giving Lectures. Part of the weekly class work critique and projects documentation.

outside the guidelines This workshop course provides an opportunity for the exploration of spatial concepts through observation and experience of phenomena. Using the infrastructure and environment of Providence as a laboratory, we will investigate how the ordinary can be transformed into the extraordinary and how the invisible can be rendered visible. Memory, time, light, vibration and metaphor will be examined in relation to the experience of architecture, installation and event. Students’ participation and individual interests will shape the direction of the workshop. The idea is to investigate and invent, pushing the parameters of what is known by applying new ideas and materials. An ongo-

ing series of experimental drawings, constructions and installation projects will be reinforced by discussions and selected readings. The semester will be punctuated with multimedia presentations and site visits. Instruction will be individualized, with an emphasis on group critiques. Guest speakers will share their work and challenge the process. Visiting critics will participate in final reviews. The course focuses on individual projects and building our knowledge through conversation and experience. Site-specific, ephemeral installations and documentation will focus on magnifying a sense of place and present.

Light Tickler A photon leaves the surface of the sun and heads for Earth. A freeze frame predicts a point of contact. Earth spins and rotates around the sun, which changes the photon’s locationof impact. When the photon is within its last attosecond of journey, a small unexpected pool of water in a dark classroom vibrates. The photon’s course is altered, reflected and refracted off the ripple cliff. The photon hits the ceiling. The vibration has influenced the microscopic on an astronomical scale and records itself in the light of the room.
