ABOUT THIS PORTFOLIO This is my portfolio of collected coursework completed during 2012-18, in which I received my graduate degree in architectural design. Please, keep in mind that the selection of work is intended to display my interests and style as much as the variety and extent of projects I have explored in my studies. Most importantly, I use the portfolio as a means of communicating my skills and knowledge; your questions and feedback is therefore very important to me. Let me know what you think! /Julia Gustafsson

COMPOSING A THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE OUTDOOR

With inspiration from Sverre Fehn’s work in Hamar, Norway and nuances of brutalism, the architecture of my final proposal for ArkxSite Ideas Competition ”Theatre” narrates, mirrors and contrasts with the contextual situation of Peniche; a dramatic, eroded landscape of limestone on the coast of Portugal. PARAMETRIC STADIUM DESIGN

The laboratory of Innovative Timber at EPFL uses parametric design tools to invent brand new constructions methods for wood. By joining their studio in 2016, I gained valuable insight in the possibilites of wood and parametric design. The final project, composing a proposal for a sports arena in Tuilière, pushed my limits in designing on a different scale.

” ”

”Including by-passers as much as football fans, Tuilère Arena invites not only the sports fans. The arena fills a sustainable purpose in Lausanne by extending its use to include games and preparation but also play and spontaneity.” ”Strengthening the idea of an inclusive activity hub for the people of Lausanne; views are designed towards the mountain side as much as onto the field.” C O M P U TAT I O N A L T O O L S : •

SOCIAL HOUSING IN SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

”Common Urbanity” at KTH search for new ways to enhance liveability in the metropolis of Brazil’s economic center; Sao Paulo. The ambition of my research was set to increase urban health by creating new conditions of housing for the urban poor. The project intended to address the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal number 3: ”Ensuring healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages”.

”By tearing down divisional walls and inserting high-quality service pods the remodeling of an abandoned hotel compex aimed to create self-organized inhabitations, much like ’favelas’, but healthier.”

THERMAL BATHS ON STOCKHOLM WATERFRONT

Through the design of an adaptive outdoor baths at Djurgården, responding to a rapidly changing urban realm that is under huge public pressure. The project of Djurgården engaged in the ongoing discussion on how to use water, one of Stockholm’s main resources, for the public. Working in collaboration with engineering and project management students the studio explored multicultural teamwork represented by six diverse nationalities. C O M P U TAT I O N A L T O O L S •

NORRMALM

The proposal of an art gallery in between buildings, levels and streets in Norrmalm derived in a forgotten space underneath a Stockholm-bridge. This particular spot had poor daylight qualities but interesting and contrasting tone in materials and ambiance throughout three floors. The exhibition halls main entrance was located at Dalagatan and an alternative entrance to the gallery’s workshop space should be entered from Kammakaregatan. The proposal aims to bring daylight onto the interaction of art in the making contra exhibition. C O M P U TAT I O N A L T O O L S •

SUSTAINABLE URBAN PLANNING IN SWEDEN

The increased demand for quality urban homes lurks in many, if not all, corners of European cities today. By shining light on future urban issues, the project’s ambition and result of this project extends its utility far beyond the borders of Lund. To connect residential areas with parkland and commercial centers, the industrial plot of Margretedal requires rethinking to continue serving the community. This is a proposal of how that can be achieved. C O M P U TAT I O N A L T O O L S : •

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

The priority in the project of Biskopen was to design for multifunctional and longterm use and create a suitable indoor climate. In Sweden, a suitable indoor climate requires natural light, insulation and exchange of air to be adapted according to heavy seasonal change. The project was carried out in collaboration with Jonna Idsäter under the supervision of Tomas Tägil and Bernt Nilsson, Lund School of Architecture.

SWEDISH PAVILLION GUEST LODGE AT IKEA GROUNDS

The ideas competition of designing guest lodges for Huseby Bruk, a national heritage site and museum in the forest of Småland, was taken on by Lund School of Architecture in 2013. Public voting was later conducted by the Swedish National Trust during an exhibition of the proposals at the Christmas market fairs of 2014 and 2015.

Proposing the initial outlines of the new train station in Rossinière was an incredible experience. A research team of engineers with a unique understanding of innovative wood construction provided support and interesting ideas throughout the design process. The project of Rossinière started off with exploring the enchanting alpine landscape with GIS tools and mapping. Creating a 3D-printable version of the area and preparing files for daylight Bâtiment renderings wasA essential to pave the way for this prominent project.

The Vidy Pavilion is an emblematic building of the latest and most innovative research in wood construction today. I am proud to have taken part in the managing of its inaguration in august 2017. My models of its unique wood-to-wood connections were displayed during the Vidy exhibition.

ADOBE INDESIGN

”The new pavilion replaced a tent that long served as a rehearsal hall and auditorium for the Vidy Theatre in Lausanne. Its inauguration on 11 September 2017 marked a new beginning for this pillar of Lausanne’s culture and cap off a significant technology transfer from the IBOIS laboratory.”
