THE DESIGN OF THE ‚STRAIGHTLESS LOUNGE‘, A 3,55 METER HIGH MEANDER, IS STRONGLY INFLUENCED BY THE COURSE OF THE RIVER ‚WILDE GERA‘ IN ERFURT, THURINGIA. DUE TO ITS FORM, THE LOUNGE CREATES BRIDGE LIKE SITUATIONS OUTSIDE AND A WIDE RANGE OF DIFFERENT ROOM SITUATIONS, LIKE SEAT NICHES INSIDE. THE BAR IN THE MIDDLE REPRESENT THE HEART OF THE LOUNGE.

TWO GENERATIONS I TWO CLAMPS I ONE HOUSE. THE CONCEPT WAS TO COMBINE TWO SIMILAR ELEMENTS IN ONE OBJECT. TWO CLAMPS OF CONCRETE SYMBOLIZE TWO GENERATIONS. THE RESULTING INTERSECTION FORM THE MEETING AND COMMUNICATION AREA. CONNECTED VOIDS CREATE AN extraordinary pleasant feeling of space AND AN EXTERNAL CIRCUMFERENTIAL CURTAIN PROVIDES THE NECESSARY INTIMACY. ZWEI GENERATIONEN I ZWEI KLAMMERN I EIN HAUS. ZWEI KLAMMERN SYMBOLISCH MITEINANDER ZU VEREINEN, IST DIE GRUNDIDEE DIESES ENTWURFS. DIE DADURCH ENTSTEHENDEN PRIVATBEREICHE SIND DURCH LUFTRÄUME MITEINANDER VERBUNDEN UND SCHAFFEN SO EIN BEEINDRUCKENDES RAUMGEFÜHL. AUSSENLIEGENDE, UMLAUFENDE VORHÄNGE SCHAFFEN DIE NÖTIGE INTIMITÄT BEI RAUMHOHEN VERGLASUNGEN.

The main objective of the design is to create space instead of area and making full use of the limited range of natural light. A strict grid of ribbon windows on the facade and on the rooftop ensures that the inside is constantly flooded with daylight. The windows can be seen as frames which create plenty of individual panorama like pictures of the environment. ZIEL WAR ES, RAUM STATT FLÄCHE ZU SCHAFFEN UND DIE BLICKBEZIEHUNG NACH AUSSEN TROTZ EINGESCHRÄNKTER BELICHTUNGSMÖGLICHKEITEN GROßZÜGIG ZU GEWÄHRLEISTEN UND DIE PRIVATHEIT TROTZDEM ZU SCHÜTZEN. B The main goal was to bring as much light as possible into the dark spaces which occure in the inside in consequence of the corner situation. The Solution: a translucent facade of figured glass which illuminates the inside but also appears in an introverted nature to the outside. The Interior Space is orientated to the courtyard. MÖGLICH VIEL TAGESLICHT IN DIE DUNKLEN BEREICHE DER ECKSITUATION ZU BRINGEN WAR INTENTION DES ENTWURFS. DIE MODERNE FASSADE TRITT GANZ BEWUSST IN EIN ELEGANTES WECHSELSPIEL ZUR HISTORISCHEN UMGEBUNG. TRANSLUZENTES INDUSTRIEGLAS SCHAFFT EIN STARK INTROVERTIERTE WIRKUNG, DIE DURCH FESTVERGLASUNGEN AUFGELOCKERT WIRD. DAS LEBEN IM INNEREN IST NAHEZU VOLLSTÄNDIG ZUM INNENHOF AUSGERICHTET. INSZENIERTE WEGE UM DEN KERN DES GEBÄUDES WIRKEN BRÜCKENGLEICH UND SETZEN SO DEN SCHWERPUNKT.

URBAN VILLAGE

N

THE BASIC IDEA OF THE CONCEPT IS TO LET LIVING HAPPEN NOT ONLY IN THE INSIDE-, BUT ALSO IN THE OUTSIDE SPACE. IN THE COURSE A VILLAGE STRUCTURED ARCHITECTURE IS DEVELOPED. ACCORDING BY THE DESIRE FOR INDIVIDUAL LIVING, VARIETY RESIDENTIAL CUBES ARE ARISED. THIRTEEN CUBES ARE DISTRIBUTED ON A 3140 SM PLOT TO CREATE ON THE ONE HAND SHELTERED, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND PUBLIC OPEN SPACES. DER ENTWURFSIDEE LIEGT DIE THESE ZUGRUNDE, DASS WOHNEN NICHT NUR IM INNEN-, SONDERN AUCH IM AUSSENRAUM STATTFINDET. SO ENTSTEHT EINE IM RAHMEN EINER DÖRFLICHEN STRUKTUR ANGELEGTE ARCHITEKTUR AUS EINZELNEN GEBÄUDEWÜRFELN, DIE DEM WUNSCH ANCH INDIVIDUELLEN WOHNEN NACHGEHT. DREIZEHN KUBEN SIND AUF EINEM GRUNDSTÜCK VON 3140 QM SCHEINBAR WAHLLOS VERTEILT UND GESTAPELT. DADURCH ENTSTEHEN SOWOHL GESCHÜTZE, ALS AUCH OFFENE FRERÄUME.

CENTER OF CIVIL PROTECTION THE TASK WAS TO COMBINE FOUR UNITS OF CIVIL PROTECTION IN ONE BUILDING. A BOLT, WHICH IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE PIECES, FORMS THE BASE OF THE DESIGN. THE FULLY GLAZED SURFACES PROVIDE WORKING SPACE FLOODED WITH NATURAL LIGHT. COURTYARDS IN THE 1ST FLOOR PROVIDE ROOFGARDENS, WHICH CAN BE USED AS RECESS AREAS. DIE ENTWURFSBASIS BILDET EIN RIEGEL, DER VIER INSTITUTIONEN DES KATASTROPHENSCHUTZES BEHERBERGT. DURCH ZERSÄGEN WERDEN FÜNF KUBATUREN AUSFORMULIERT, DIE TROTZDEM EINE EINHEIT IN IHRER FORMSPRACHE BILDEN. DIE DADURCH ENTSTANDENEN SCHNITTFLÄCHEN SORGEN DURCH GROßZÜGIGE VERGLASUNG FÜR LICHTDURCHFLUTETE ARBEITSRÄUME UND BLICKBEZIEHUNGEN. CATCHING THE GREEN! THIS HAS BEEN THE INTENTION FOR THE CULT.URE DESIGN. THE GREEN COURTYARD IS ABSORBED IN THE BASEMENT, GROWS UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUILDING AND EXITS ON THE ROOFTOP. THEREBY A HOMOGENOUS FLOW IS RESULTING. INSIDE BECOMES OUTSIDE AND VICE VERSA. THE VOID WITH ITS OPEN-AIR-STAGE IN THE BASEMENT FORMS THE HEART OF THE BUILDING. BRIDGE LIKE SITUATIONS INTENSIVY THE EFFECT OF THE WALK AROUND. THE FACADE REFLECTS THE CONCEPT AND APPEARS LIKE A GREEN WOUND IN THE HISTORICAL SURROUNDINGS. THE PERFORATED BRASS PANELS CREATE HIGHLY INTROVERTED ATMOSPHERES. MÖGLICHST VIEL GRÜN IN DAS INNERE DES GEBÄUDES ZU TRANSPORTIEREN WAR INTENTION DES ENTWURFS. DER ZUR FREILUFTBÜHNE UMGESTALTETE INNENHOF WIRD IM UNTERGESCHOSS ‚EINGESAUGT‘, ERHEBT SICH DURCH ALLE GESCHOSSE HINDURCH, BIS ER AUF DEM DACH WIEDER DISPENSIERT. EIN HOMOGENER FLUSS ZWISCHEN INNEN UND AUSSEN ENTSTEHT. DAS ÄUSSERE STÜLPT SICH NACH INNEN, DAS INNERE NACH AUSSEN. HERZSTÜCK DES GEBÄUDES BILDET DIE BÜHNE IM UNTERGESCHOSS. INSZENIERTE WEGE UM DEN LUFTRAUM WIRKEN BRÜCKENGLEICH UND SETZEN SO DEN SCHWERPUNKT. AN DER FASSADE KLAFFT DER AN DER FASSADE REFLEKTIERTE INNENHOF WIE EINE GRÜNE WUNDE IN DIE HISTORISCHE UMGEBUNG. DIE MIT PERFORIERTEN MESSINGPLATTEN BESPIELTE FASSADE SCHAFFT EINE STARK INTROVERTIERTE WIRKUNG.

dOCUMENTA CENTER OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION

,dOCUMENTA‘: FREE TRANSLATION FROM LATIN MEANS ‚THEORY‘ OR ‚MIND‘ THIS BACHELOR THESIS PROJECT DEALS WITH THE DESIGN FOR A CENTER OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION FOR THE dOCUMENTA, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EXHIBITIONS FOR CONTEMPORARY ART IN EUROPE. EVERY FIVE YEARS, MORE THAN 100 ARTISTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD SHOW THEIR WORKS FOR EXACT 100 DAYS. THE EXHIBITION VENUES ARE LOCATED ALL ACROSS THE CITY KASSEL. THE GOAL WAS TO DESIGN A PAVILION FOR THE UPCOMING dOCUMENTA XIII CONTAINING FUNCTIONS SUCH AS INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION, A PLACE WHERE ARTISTS, PROMOTERS AND VISITORS MEET AND EXCHANGE MINDS. THE dOCUMENTA CENTER OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION IS A PAVILION WHERE VISITORS GET INFORMATION ABOUT CURRENT EXHIBITIONS AND DECIDE WHERE TO GO AND WHAT TO SEE. CONNECTING EACH VENUE IN ONE CENTRE HAS BEEN MY INTENTION OF A DESIGN FOR THE TEMPORARY PAVILION. THE GOAL IS TO CREATE POINTS OF CONTACT WELL KNOWN AS SYNAPSES IN THE HUMAN BRAIN. THE dOCUMENTA CENTER OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION APPEARS AS BRAIN OF THE dOCUMENTA, PEOPLE ARE RECEIVED AND SENT OUT LIKE NERVE FLOWS AND NEUROTRANSMITTER.

THE MOST EXPECTED VISITORS ARRIVE IN KASSEL AT THE MAIN TRAIN STATION. THE WAY GOES ALONG THE ‘TREPPENSTRASSE’ TO THE HISTORICAL ‘FRIEDRICHSPLATZ’. DUE TO RISE THE PAVILION FOR FOUR METERS, THE BIG SQUARE BELOW CAN BE KEPT OPEN FOR ART IN PUBLIC PLACES AND THE CENTER OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION IS PUT INTO THE LIMELIGHT. ONLY THE MOST ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, LIKE SERVICE, TICKETSALE, LOCKERS AND THE CRECHE ARE SITUATED ON THE GROUND FLOOR. THE MAIN ENTRANCE IS LOCATED IN THE CENTRE OF THE BUILDING, BUT THERE IS ANOTHER ENTRANCE FOR JOURNALISTS AND V.I.P. IN THE SOUTHWEST. ON THE FIRST FLOOR FUNCTIONS MERGE SMOTHLY INTO INDIVIDUAL SPACES WHICH ARE LINKED TO ONE ANOTHER VIA CORIDORS FROM THE SYNAPSE-SHAPED STRUCTURE.EXCHANGE MINDS.

WAFFLE LIKE GRID The digitally constructed object is disassembled into slices from two sides. The resulting crossed slats, form the basis of the construction. The crossed structure simulates a construction of prefabricated cassette elements made of glued laminated timber. These can easily be installed at the construction site. The skin of the constructed skelleton is made of ETFE foil which is tightened between the horizontal slats. Depending on the lightning situation the building appears in very different way as monolithic sculpture by day or as technical skelleton by night. The facade can also be used as media facade by lightning individual cassette elements. In this way the temporary Pavilion becomes exhibition venue itself by providing space and surface for visual and media arts. Building physics Due to the 2 layers, the facade acts as heat buffer. It isn‘t relevant to deliver protection against cold As the temporary pavilion is only used during the summer. Fresh air can flow through the inner space because of controllable openings at the lower and upper end. Holes in the horizontal elements enable air circulation. For fresh air can be supplied also by installing an extra air conditioning system in the risen floor The facade material, transparent ETFE foil enables natural light all over the 1st floor.
