On Sunday July 8th, the ANA Intercontinental Manza Beach Resort will host the 34th Annual Okinawa Governor’s Cup at the “Manza Haarii Festival”. The festival kicks in the morning starting at 11:00 and runs until 16:30. Of all haarii tournaments held throughout the island, this is the only one where the winners get to keep the Governor’s Cup trophy for an entire year, thus making this haarii race one of the most prestigious events on the island. Every year, contestants from across Okinawa, Japan and even from overseas locations attend this event. Organizers believe that this particular haarii is more exciting to watch up close, as the Manza Beach Resort invites experienced and veteran competitors to the tournament every year, making this event all the worthwhile to see. The races are divided into two groups. There is the “Challenge Race” division where anyone can participate, whether they are a group of friends or colleagues from work. And then there is the “Champion Race” division where veteran teams compete for the Governor’s Cup. The application deadline to participate has already passed, but just watching is still a lot of

Day of Naha: Immerse Yourself in the Capital City of Okinawa by Jun Ikemura

Tamaudun, the Ryukyu Royal Family Grave-site.

July 8th is Naha Day in Okinawa. This special occasion originated from the use of play-on-words or rather, a play-on-numbers. Naha’s two syllables ‘Na’ and ‘Ha’ are also syllables belonging to the Japanese pronunciations of the numbers “na-na” and ‘ha-chi” or “7” and “8” respectively in the English language. Hence, we have the numbers 7-8, and thus making July 8th officially Naha Day. To celebrate this momentous occasion, the City of Naha organizes special events around the Naha City and offers free entry to some

5. Kokusai Street

Naha City’s Kokusai-dōri is perhaps the most recognized merchant streets here in Okinawa. Popular among tourists, the street is lined with many souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes, Iza-

kayas, jewelry shops, convenience stores, and other unique attractions. So how did this street become so popular? Kokusai-dōri (dōri, a Japanese term for street) was built in 1933 to connect Naha directly to Shuri. Back then, the area where Kokusai-dōri now exist had a few houses on it and was mostly filled with farmland. The area was also known for its high humidity. After World War II, the U.S. Military had occupied the Kume and Tsuji Districts, which were the epicenter of Naha City before the war. As a result, people who had lived in those areas had to move. Potters moved to the now current location of Kokusai Street (which did not have the name Kokusai yet) to restart their businesses, and then roof tile craft workers followed. As more and more people moved to live in the area, it eventually became known as black market underground. In 1948, the Ernie Pyle Kokusai Theater opened along the avenue. The term “Kokusai” means international in Japanese, and over time, people borrowed the term to refer to the street as “Kokusai-dōri” or “Kokusai Street”. Major department stores, several movie theaters and other shops

6. Heiwa-dōri Shopping Market

Heiwa-dōri is a network of interwoven market streets in central Naha, just about at the halfway point of Kokusai Street. The market is unique with its arcade-style roofing that house the many small shops below that sit along the alleyways. The alleyway got its name because of the old Heiwa Movie Theater that used to be at the entrance of the street. “Heiwa” means ‘peace’ in English and “-dōri” meaning street or road. Today, Heiwa-dōri is home to a myriad of small shops selling souvenirs, clothing, local foods, and just about anything else you can think of. Many Naha residents boast that Heiwa-dōri is the best gather spot in Okinawa. Indeed, the market’s maze-like atmosphere gives it a sense of old Okinawa. But not only that, it is the old Okinawan Obaa (elderly Okinawan woman) filled with so much energy and strength that run most of these stores that gives it a unique ambiance. Their warm Oki-

7. Makishi Kousetsu Ichiba

‘Makishi Kousetsu Ichiba’ or ‘Makishi Public Market’, is the perhaps the most famous public market in Okinawa. The Naha market host many food stores offering every imaginable kind of Okinawan foods possible, including meats, fresh fish, vegetables, condiments, supplements and more! Visitors to the market will definitely feel immersed in Okinawan culture, as the market venue is pretty much part of the Okinawan way life. And if you like, you can even buy ingredients there, and then ask that they be cooked at one of the restaurants on the second floor, guaranteeing that you are being served with the freshest ingredients of the day. The market was well-known as a black-market venue right after the war and some landowner conflicts erupted between the government and military. Eventually the disputes were settled, and the market began to flourish to become one of the most famous merchant spots on Okinawa.

Cheer Eagles Bring It to Okinawa!

Cheerleaders are very important to the ambiance of sports games. They boost the morale of the fans and can help build momentum for the team. In Okinawa, a cheerleading squad called the Cheer Eagles was formed last October. The squad consist of kids from the age levels up to the 3rd grade, both girls and boys. This year they welcomed their youngest member to the group, a 1 year old! Yes, a 1 year old! He has become an honorary member and joins his two older sisters who are also part of the team. Today, there are about 20 kids in the group, and they have been the talk of the town at major sports venues. This month on June 26th they will be appearing at the Okinawa Cellular Stadium when the Nippon Ham Fighters take on the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks and will be performing alongside both teams’ official cheerleading squads. The Cheer Eagles was a

dream come true for Ms. Tomomi Mitsubori, a Fukuoka Prefecture native. Every since she was young, she dreamed of becoming a cheerleader in the NFL. She would become a professional cheerleader for 10 years for major league baseball in Japan. When she moved to Okinawa with her family, she wanted to help make other kid’s cheerleading dreams come true as well and decided to volunteer her time to teach other children. Okinawa was the perfect venue to make this happen. By and large, Okinawa has a very large international mix of people and Ms. Tomomi thought this would be a great experience to have an international group of kids work together to bring cheers to the people. Thus far, the group has caught the attention of many and their popularity continues to rise. The Cheer Eagles practice once a week and give performances at elderly care

facilities. Tomomi says at first, the kids were mostly shy, but once they got on stage, even the parents were surprised. The kids had developed a sense of confidence and became a bundle of energy bringing plenty of joy to everyone who saw them. Ms.Tomomi, wants to instill a sense of team spirit among the kids. She wants the children to care for one another and to be grateful to each other. This is the best way to bring out the best in them she believes. Ms. To-

momi wants to fulfill the dreams of many kids here in Okinawa and hopes to exchange great memories and to make everyone happy through cheerleading. She hopes your kids will join them! The Cheer Eagles will be happy to perform at your sports games and festivals, so please give them a call! They will love to help. Please check them out on their Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/ cheer.eagles/ or call 0909576-3902 for more information.

Horoscope Jun. 25th ~ Jul. 9th You are almost reaching the level of harmony in your life that you have dreamed of. The only thing you need is a little more self-confidence, and some help from a good friend. You should not be afraid to tell about your dreams to your friends, and if romance is important to you, that’s only natural, and you can freely admit it.

You are going to have many discussions with your friends over the next few days. No one has asked you to make an important decision, but you know it’s coming. You should think with whom you want to spend time this weekend, and look your best. You should also think whether you want to ask a question you’ve had in your mind.

You should try to organize better and engage in boring daily routines as little as possible. At your work there’s a plan afoot that will open you new possibilities. That would also help you to show what you really can accomplish. Someone who has the power to move things is going to take a notice of you, so stay on your game.

In order for you to recognize what you really need, you should analyze your feelings. Ask yourself honest questions, and although you already know the answers you could have problem admitting them. When someone asks your opinion, avoid saying aloud the first thought that comes to your mind. Think first.

A surprise meeting with someone could well lead to a conversation about your plans for your future. You feel free, and that is going to boost your imagination. You should not reject any proposal before considering everything thoroughly. In love there could be an important question, and you can only hope the answer is right.

14

This time working as a team would bring you the fastest results. There is a possibility that you can start a new project that is very close to your heart, and at the same time offers a great opportunity to expand your circle of friends. The reward for a job well done could be more spiritual than financial at this time, though.

You can expect to be asked to join a new project, but you should think carefully before you agree if this is really what you want or in your best interest. If the new project involves too much work, think of someone you could recommend replace yourself. The more practical attitude you take the easier everything settles in their right places.

Your charms and energy are now on top. No one can resist your smile and positive aura, and is someone does, you should avoid the company of such a person. If you dream of a romantic weekend, just do it. When you put your mind on it that is almost a surefire guarantee that the occasion is going to be a roaring success.

Your social life should be the focus at this time, but you have to do something yourself. Your family and friends could still be in a stupor because of the rainy season, so an encouraging smile and a good hug from you could be just the right medicine to jolt them into action. Your love life is also in need of a good positive jolt.

Dreaming about love, riches and wellbeing is rewarding sometimes, but it can also bring disappointment and even fear. Make sure that your dreams are positive. Your life is what you make to be, and at the end, no one is going to look after you better than you do yourself. But don’t be afraid to take reasonable risks.

Something that you have regarded as very complicated turns out to be a simple matter as soon as you stop concentrating too much on small details. Sometimes taking distance can mean being closer to a solution. If you want to make a change in your life, you should start with small steps, and move on as you accomplish your goals.

Changes that you have waited for a long time are finally coming through offering you an excellent opportunity to put in your thoughts and ideas. The company of some smart people is giving a nice boost to your confidence, and you will realize that you have more to give that you’ve thought. Someone is going to confide in you a secret.
