HE principal themes of our prayers during the period of the “Days of Awe” are not limited to our personal material welfare. They are not con­ cerned merely with our life and health, our susten­ ance, happiness and prosperity. This emerges most clearly and distinctly from the meaningful prayer in the Amidah: “Now O L-rd grant honour to Thy peopie, glory to those who revere Thee, joy to Thy land and gladness to Thy city”. This most beautiful, important and exalted prayer does not mean merely that our people should enjoy the high regard and respect of the outside world although this is of itself of great importance — but, more profoundly and significantly, it means that we Jews must renew our consciousness of the greatness of our people, of our great spiritual heritage, of our unique, distinctive way of life. We must achieve a deeper understanding

of how to value and prize our invaluable spiritual treasures, and a firm determination to uphold whatever the cost — our glorious traditions in their pristine purity, as befits the Am Kadosh. In our entire history, there have always been groups and movements in our midst, who rebelled against Torat Moshe or against certain parts of it. Moshe Rabeinu had his Dathan and Abiram, Korach and his company, and ever since there has hardly been a period in the history of our people without its rebels, who have tried by every means at their disposal to throw off the yoke of Torah and Mitzvot. Although in certain periods and in certain lands, they were, regretfully, successful, nevertheless they did not pose a serious danger to our people as a whole, for the overwhelming majority of our people did not allow themselves to be led astray by those false
