JUB HOLLAND

Going Wild with JUB We are very pleased to offer you our new bulb catalogue 2019/2020. In addition to the many sustainably grown new varieties and mixtures from our own nursery, we are also keen to report a new development this year; JUB Holland has entered into a partnership with Buglife. Together with this UK charity we aim to improve the conditions for bees, butterflies and all other invertebrates, by creating important B-lines (see page 13). We are very proud of the new JUB Flowerdesigner App, which makes it easy to create a visualisation with bulb varieties or mixtures on location in public spaces, parks or gardens. This way it is possible to inform and show customers about the options which enables them to choose the right varieties (see page 9). Since last year we have been working together with Dutch garden and landscape designer Carien van Boxtel. Pages 42-51 show her passion for naturalising bulbs.

Biodiversity is important to JUB

JUB Flowerdesigner App Spring comes to life virtually

Preview of the Spring border With our JUB Flowerdesigner App we now offer you the unique opportunity to visualise how the plant bed in park, roadside or other location will look like when the suggested bulbs are in full bloom. The App offers a wide range of varieties and mixtures and various options to create realistic preview.

How does the App work? With the JUB Flowerdesigner App our specialists can determine on location what the most suitable and nicest Spring bulbs are for roadside verges and borders in parks and public green areas. Mixtures, individual varieties; the possibilities are endless. In photos of the existing situation, the bulbs can be ‘virtually planted’ and show their flowers. The Spring is brought to life through the visualisations on the iPad. It is possible to share the design with your customers. The JUB specialists are happy to advise you about the many possibilities and applications of this App.

Get inspired

No better way to get inspired for the next season than visiting parks and gardens around the country in Spring. Getting ideas by looking at combinations or displays and trying to implement those in your own creative plans for next year, that’s what gardening is all about! Of course, the JUB eye-catchers are a great start (p. 52-71) but nothing beats seeing them in the real world. Here are some prime examples: p. 10 top: combination ‘Daily News’ and tulip maze at Arundel Castle. Bottom: mixed border in Lower Gardens in Bournemouth and roundabout in Harrogate p. 11 top: ‘tulip mount’ at Arundel Castle, middle: crown imperials at Kew Gardens and mixed border in Bournemouth. Herbs and flower bulbs The concept Biodiversity in the urban environment is becoming more important! In addition, much attention is paid to ecological management and the development of herbaceous vegetations. In order to achieve a high biodiversity value and to guarantee a long flowering period, we are experimenting with the concept of bulbs and herbs. Within this concept, the forces of stable and native herb vegetations are combined with a specifically developed natural bulb mixture. This creates a vegetation with a long flowering period, great added value for biodiversity and extensive, ecological maintenance. Our sales team is pleased to give you further information regarding this concept.

Buglife Partnership Buglife and JUB Holland Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates. We’re actively working to save Britain’s rarest little animals, everything from bees to beetles, worms to woodlice and jumping spiders to jellyfish. ‘If we and the rest of the back-boned animals were to disappear overnight, the rest of the world would get on pretty well. But if the invertebrates were to disappear, the world’s ecosystems would collapse.’ Sir David Attenborough.

Get Britain Buzzing Campaign Strawberries, chocolate, apples, orange juice, tomatoes, peas, one in every three mouthfuls we eat and nine out of every ten wildflowers have one thing in common they all depend on pollination. But our pollinators are facing unprecedented decline hence Buglife are leading the Get Britain Buzzing Campaign and why we see JUB Holland as a key strategic partner. Bulbs play an ever increasingly important role in providing food for our pollinators from snowdrops and crocuses as the year starts through to Autumn flowering Colchicums.

JUB Biodiversity mixtures JUB Holland supports Buglife by a contribution for every square metre planted of their special biodiversity mixtures. These mixtures have been developed to include a range of bulbs that provide nectar and pollen across early Spring, including such favourites as alliums. These mixtures are perfect to naturalise in meadow areas to extend the flowering season or can make stunning displays in a bed alone. The UK has lost very large areas of wildflower meadow over the years. Modern warmer winter weather forces bees to go in search of food earlier in the year. Bulbs are one of the few providers of nectar and pollen at this inhospitable time of year. Buglife have been mapping B-Lines across the UK, routes that connect our best meadows to others enabling pollinators to move around the country. Have a look where the B-Lines cross your areas and plan to add a contribution to the flowering highways that could all start with a large area of Spring flowering bulbs.

Bulbs for roof gardens Bulbs on the roof? Lush roof gardens brighten up more and more roofs. Beautiful borders of perennials combined with swaying ornamental grasses. Together with the supporting structure of trees, hedges and shrubs they form a beautiful and natural element. Strategic eyecatchers are the flower bulbs on the roof. This complete ecosystem definitely enhances biodiversity. Due to the double use of land, the roof can be used optimally as a second ground level. A garden roof is ideal for living, working, exercising, playing and relaxing.

Flower bulbs and perennial plants Spring colours in the perennial border

Colourful perennial borders are created by planting flower bulbs Most borders with perennials are almost colourless in early Spring without flowering bulbs. To enjoy these borders for a much longer period, bulbs can be planted that bloom in March, April and May. In doing so, it is important to take into account what is already visible during those months, either flowers or foliage of the existing plants. Our advice is to match the choice of bulbs to create a harmonious and colourful border.

Biodiversity What is biodiversity? Biodiversity is a term we use to describe the richness of nature. It is about the great variety of animals, plants, habitats and genes. By interaction with environmental factors, biodiversity creates ecosystems in which organisms can live, for example humans. The habitats of bees and butterflies have become increasingly smaller and are also increasingly further apart. Floral roadsides, gardens and public green spaces can constitute an important link between these habitats.

Cooperation with Buglife and the Butterfly Foundation Organisations such as Buglife, as well as its Dutch counterpart (NBV), and the Dutch Butterfly Foundation, are committed to improving the living conditions of bees and butterflies. Together with these organisations, we have developed special mixtures which are bee and butterfly friendly.

Bulbs for bees The bulbs which we use in our bee mixtures all belong in the top 10. The botanical forms of all bulbs mentioned below are good for bees. “Bees” include both honey bees and wild bees. The mentioned varieties are examples of the tested species. The nectar and pollen value depends on various conditions such as weather, location, etc. In the two columns, the values are given from 1 (moderate but useful) to 5 (very good). Many bulb flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies Many bulb flowers are attractive to butterflies and bees. They owe this to the large amount of nectar in their flowers. Bees and butterflies are fond of it. Nectar is a sweet syrupy liquid containing sugars, proteins and vitamins. The bees and butterflies need those substances to lay eggs. And while they fly from flower to flower, they take care of pollination of the flowers. A win-win situation.

Bulbs for butterflies The flower bulbs which we use in our butterfly mixtures are all in the top 10 of butterfly-friendly plants. Of the bulbs below, all specie forms are good for butterflies. The varieties are examples of valuable types. The nectar and pollen values depend on various other conditions such as weather, location, etc. In the two columns, the values are given from 1 (moderate but useful) to 5 (very good). Parks & Naturalising bulbs Naturalising and low maintenance bulbs for woodland areas. Inspiration for the application of naturalising bulbs, by Carien van Boxtel. Naturalising bulbs, many of them being native varieties, can be found in the ‘Parks’ section. Our naturalising bulbs are all nursery grown and not collected from the wild! In general, they require minimal maintenance and many of them will grow in (semi-) shady locations.

“Fairy-tale flower carpets of naturalising bulbs” By Carien van Boxtel Self-employed garden and landscape designer Carien van Boxtel is the permanent designer and planting expert for JUB Holland. Carien works together with JUB Holland on special projects with many varieties from our extensive range, but amongst her favourites is definitely the large group of naturalising bulbs. Her own garden, and many of the projects which she has designed over the years, are packed with Spring flowering bulbs in large numbers. The carefully selected varieties result in brilliant successions of winter aconites, snowdrops, crocuses, scillas, narcissi, fritillaries and specie tulips from January until May.

Carien van Boxtel

What are naturalising bulbs? Naturalising bulbs (named ‘Stinzen-bulbs’ in Holland after the old name of large country houses and estates) is a collective name for a special group of Spring flowers which naturalise well. They are mainly bulbs, tubers or roots that have been native to the British Isles or were planted as long ago as the 16th century on large country estates, in castles gardens and country houses. It’s a great idea to visit those fairy-tale places from mid-February to mid-May and admire the large scale, or sometimes smaller scale, flower carpets in parklands, in meadows, orchards and at the foot of monumental tree avenues. Magical!

Snowdrops

Naturalising bulbs are sustainable Naturalising bulbs may be closely linked to history, but they are completely up-to-date and for many reasons a very sustainable and therefore modern choice. By planting naturalising bulbs you make an investment for years, maybe even centuries. The bulbs will steadily expand by either bulblets or seeds, with minimal maintenance. In this respect they have the same characteristics as perennial plants. Most naturalising bulbs disappear after flowering and seed formation underground to make room for other ground cover plants. That is why combinations with other plants are also so important for the succession. As an added bonus, some bulbs and tubers, such as the delicate cyclamen and the arum also have beautiful, decorative leaves!

42

Catalogue 2019/2020

Biodiversity and naturalising bulbs Naturalising bulbs provide colour almost year-round and are an important nectar and pollen source for (wild) bees, butterflies and other invertebrates. Especially in the sparse, early Spring months, bulbs such as winter aconite, scilla, snowdrop and crocus are indispensable for early flying (wild) bees and bumblebees, while Autumn flowering crocuses and colchicums serve the late flying bees in September and October.

Large plantings, great effect Because of the scale of the plantings (large areas, paths or waves), fairy-tale effects can be achieved which are highly appreciated by the public. By using the right variaties and combinations, flowering is possible for a longer period of time. From snowdrops in February followed by, for example, botanical crocuses, chionodoxas, woodland tulips, narcissi and bluebells. The bulbs and tubers produce beautiful, multi-coloured carpets, but also combine very well with ground cover plants and woodland plants such as ferns. Even in lawns and verges, the possibilities are endless! The colourful effect will, especially after a number of years, be so attractive that people will specially come to see it. Think of the ever popular snowdrop events and dreamy woodlands filled with the blue glow of bluebells.

Botanical crocuses

Management and design: learning from history Naturalising bulbs usually feel at home in a humus and calcareous environment and live there in symbiosis with underground fungi, bacteria and other organisms. Amongst the naturalising bulbs are many varieties which are suitable for shady spots, but they also feel at home in open grassland and in verges. At JUB Holland we find it important that we cherish and admire those old plants, but at the same time also learn from those old gardening traditions of planting and management, which provide important insights for contemporary designs.

“Fairy-tale flower carpets of naturalising bulbs” Most popular naturalising bulbs The most popular naturalising bulbs in woodlands are undoubtedly the snowdrops, the wood anemones and the English bluebells. The wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa) is native to almost the whole of Britain on various types of soils and habitats. The rhizomes will spread steadily if the conditions are right, around or under trees. Very spectacular are the bluebell woods where millions of violet-blue flowers spread their sweet scent, but the bluebells can also be found in more open spaces. Galanthus (snowdrops) are usually the first flowers to appear in the winter. The discussion whether they need to be planted as dry bulbs or ‘in the green’ will probably never end. At JUB we always advise to plant snowdrops in the late summer or early Autumn as fresh dry bulbs for the best result.

Catalogue 2019/2020

JUB Holland has been a supplier of naturalising bulbs for four generations When you want to get started with naturalising bulbs, JUB Holland offers in this catalogue a very wide selection of true species from reliable, often small-scale nurseries. For those who find it difficult to choose varieties which combine well, there are beautiful ready-to-use mixtures available. Those mixtures provide colour for months and the JUB specialists are happy to advise whether your preferred mixture is also suitable for the particular project. This depends on factors such as mowing, pruning, light and type of soil. More and more clients are asking for bespoke mixtures, because they want something special: a mixture or planting plan that is completely geared to the location with a theme that matches the specific project. That is of course also possible!

Summer snowflakes

Origin of naturalising bulbs Some naturalising bulbs come from afar and have a South-, Eastern- or Central-European origin, think for example of the beautiful Tulipa turkestanica or the Ornithogalum nutans, but there are also quite a few native varieties like English bluebells and pseudonarcissus. Of course, JUB Holland will never obtain any bulbs which are collected from the wild. All bulbs offered in this catalogue are nursery grown! JUB’s wide range includes many beautiful varieties which in the wild are often very rare. Many are of vital importance to our wild bees, butterflies and other wildlife which we, as designers and managers, can reintroduce in our green projects. I wish you much pleasure in making the right choices for all projects and we hope to be able to admire the results in the coming Spring.

Practical tips Plant methodes, feeding and planting location

25 years ago, JUB Holland developed a planting machine that plants bulbs in existing lawns and roadsides, in a simple manner. In this chapter you can find information about mechanical planting as well as feeding and mowing policies. You will also find a handy list which shows each variety with the recommended location, specific features, durability etc.

Practical tips

Mechanical planting Mechanical planting of flower bulbs Our special planting machine is ideal for planting large quantities of bulbs in existing grass, along roadsides, in lawns, roundabouts etc. By planting the bulbs with our machine you will achieve a major reduction in labour costs. The machine is a combination of planter and (mini) tractor. A large container holds the bulbs, whilst at the bottom two belts deliver the bulbs to the ‘plant feet’. Two vertical rotating knives open the turf just before the plant feet. The feet ‘dive’ into the ground and open up the turf, at which point the belts release the bulbs which fall into the soil and are then covered. The machine also puts the turf back in position, followed by a roller.

Plant capacity of the machine Under the right circumstances it is possible to plant approximately 10,000 daffodils or 25,000 crocuses/small bulbs per hour. The speed of the planting may vary depending on factors like soil type, location and bulb size.

Embankment planting

Planting with side planter

Especially for sloping areas we offer a machine that can plant on banks with a maximum angle of 30 to 35 degrees. This machine is provided with caterpillar tracks, and an additional plant foot so that a uniform effect can be achieved.

In order to plant closer to trees, we recently developed a side planter. This machine has a plant foot mounted on the side of the machine which enables us to plant between, or very close to, trees.

Feeding, fertilisation plan and mowing Feeding and fertilisation plan To preserve your bulbs, it is very important to provide them with food. JUB has therefore further expanded the service. It is now also possible to carry out feeding in the Autumn and Spring with our specially selected biological bulb fertiliser. This is the same fertiliser which we use for our own cultivation at our nursery. In Autumn, the fertiliser is given simultaneously with the mechanical planting of bulbs in grass via a device installed on the planting machine. An environmentally friendly organic food can be used in the Spring. The organic component in this fertiliser is converted into humus by soil organisms. Autumn fertilisation

Spring fertilisation

Mowing When using naturalising bulbs in grass areas, a commonly accepted guideline is that mowing can be started an average of six to eight weeks after flowering. This will allow the bulbs enough time to produce seeds and die back naturally. An exception to this rule is the allium, which can be mown directly after flowering. The foliage of most alliums has already died back before flowering. Mowing, on average 6-8 weeks after flowering
