am constantly asked: are SCORE services really completely free? How does it sustain itself? why do people volunteer at SCORE? what’s in it for them? and my favorite one: why do SCORE volunteers stay with SCORE for so long?! The questions do not surprise me, I asked myself the same questions when I first learned about the organization, but the answers do. The truth is that each volunteer has their own answers, but here are mine.
ARE SCORE SERVICES REALLY COMPLETELY FREE? Yes, they are! Our incredibly experienced mentors do nor charge for their time, SCORE does not charge for the services of its mentors either. There are no strings attached whatsoever. In fact, our mentors renew an annual commitment to SCORE’s strict conflict of interest policy as well as an ethics training that prevents them from promoting their self-interest. Our mentors will not steer you in any direction, will not sell you a product or service, and are not for hire. At SCORE you will find honest, transparent, FREE advice and support. HOW DOES SCORE SUSTAIN ITSELF? SCORE receives a very small amount of tax payer funding (our 2018 FY budget is only $20,500.00) and the rest of the funds we receive come from the Salt Lake County office of Economic Development, the State of Utah, an SBA grant to train entrepreneurs who are members of our military or veterans, sponsors, and individual donors. But the main secret of SCORE’s sustainability lays in the generous time donation of our volunteers who donated 1,282 mentoring sessions to 740 clients, delivered 243 workshops attended by 4,889 entrepreneurs in our area! Considering the high value of an hour of our average mentor, this represents a donation to our chapter of almost $200,000!
WHY DO PEOPLE VOLUNTEER AT SCORE? While the answer to this question will depend on who you ask, for me it’s the kind of people that are attracted to SCORE, the opportunity to give back and be an active contributor to the local economy by sharing my experience as a serial entrepreneur, plus the benefit to stay connected with such a vibrant sector of our local community. WHAT IS IN IT FOR THEM? SCORE volunteers enjoy a variety of personal, local and national rewards. WHY DO SCORE VOLUNTEERS STICK AROUND FOR SO LONG? I handed recognitions this year to mentors who have been with us for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years! I joined in 2009 and most of the mentors I met when I joined are still with us! When I asked them why they stayed for so long, without exception, they each told me they could not see themselves without SCORE. “its energizing!’ said one of my amazing mentors the other day. I agree! Entrepreneurs are a rare breed. Most are visionary, proactive, smart, disciplined, focused, genuine, self-directed, dreamers who dare to ask why not?
