Solar-Powered Plane Completes Historic ´Across America` Flight Dolasia, Meera. "Solar-Powered Plane Completes Historic 'Across America' Flight."DOGOnews. DOGO Media Inc., 9 July 2013. Web. 13 Aug. 2013.

The article talks about a new invention, the first one to be made, created by two men,Bertrand Piccard and AndreBorschberg, to reduce the excessive use of gasoline for airplanes by creatingsolar powered airplanes that can fly during the day with the sun and at night with its energy cells, changing the type of fuel that airplanes will use in the future. To prove that this idea could be made, Bertrand Piccard decided to make a trip with his solar powered plane all around the United Statesstarting on May 3rd in San Francisco. Finally, after passing by St Louis through a terrible storm, the plane travelled to Washington D.C and ended itstrip on the John F. Kennedy airport in New York after 105 hours and 41 minutes, at a speed of 33.14 mph and completed the 3,511-mile journey from coast to coast of the United States. After this incredible trip through America, Bertrand Piccard and AndreBorschberg are planning to make a new trip through the entire world. Vocabulary words: Sleek: it means to be elegant or that something looks elegant Inflatable: it meansto inflate or that something that can inflate

Questions: 1)

What was the most interesting thing that you learned from reading this article, and why? Explain. After reading this article about a solar powered airplane that traveled day and night around all the United States in a few days, the most interesting thing I learned was that this plane could fly thousands of miles with the energy from the sun during the day and at night with no problem at all. I find this information very interesting because I have heard about solar powered airplanes before, but those airplanes were not as advanced as this new airplane since they couldn’t travel at night. These airplanes didn’t have energy cells on their wings that could keep energy from the sun to use it to fly at night. This modern solar powered plane posse’s solar panels that provide energy to fly during the day, and while it does that, it absorbs solar energy and stores it to use it at night.

2)

Can you connect this event to something that has happened around you? (Has something like this happened to you, your family, your community, or your country?) Explain. This event of the solar powered airplane can be connected to the time I flew with my uncle on a microlight some months ago. My family and I went early in the morning to Tabacundo were my uncle lives, and after some minutes, my uncle and I were flying in themicrolight. We flew for almost 45 minutes and my uncle even let me fly the microlight for some minutes, it was the best experience in my life. It was

an amazing adventure, probably as amazing as the adventure of flying around the United States on a solar powered plane.

Tornado Country

Bubar, Joe. "Tornado Country." Scholastic, Helping Children Around the World to Read and Learn. Scholastic Inc., 6 May 2013. Web. 13 Aug. 2013.

The article explains that there are tornadoes that appear each spring in the United States causing a lot of damage to homes and killing many people, but scientists are searching for new technology to find where tornadoes can cause more damage and also new ways to alert people of the oncoming danger. From Texas to South Dakota is located the Tornado Alley were more than 50,000 tornadoes appear since 1950 where people are at a high risk of experiencing a twister since most tornadoes form faster and last longer in this part of the United States.Meteorologists use this new information to aware the people about twisters in states outside and inside of the Tornado Alley so people can know what to do when a tornado strikes and what to do after it ends. Sadly, people only count with less than 15 minutes to find a safe place to hide. Vocabulary Words: Tossing: it means to launch or throw something away Alley:it means a large flatland with strong winds and grass

Questions: 1)

What new insight into the world did you gain through this article, and how will it impact your way of thinking or behaving? Explain. After reading this article I learned a new thing about the world I live in. Before, I didn’t know about the Tornado Alley and that in this area appears many twisters and causes a lot of damage and kills people. This will impact my way of thinking about how dangerous some places in the United States can be and about all the problems people that live there have to face every time a tornado strikes. I hope that throughout the future years scientists find ways to prevent people from the dangers of tornadoes and also find ways to understand how a twister works and also the moment when its about to strike.

2)

If applicable: What caused this event, and/or what are the effects of this event? Explain. What makes twisters appear is that on a flatland with no mountains around, cold and hot winds crash to each other causing the formation of a cone that increases its size as more wind comes to it. When this happens, the cone stars to fall to the ground with a huge strength and moves in any direction causing a lot of damage to structures and cars, and kills people on its way. After the tornado ends, what its left is just destroyed homes, cars, and trees torn up from their roots.

Families crying for their loved onesand for their lost goods. Twisters are unpredictable and they strike at any time without people from being capable to find safety.

A Great Escape Walters, Jennifer Marino. "A Great Escape." Scholastic, Helping Children Around the World to Read and Learn. Scholastic Inc., 13 Aug. 2013. Web. 14 Aug. 2013.

This article talks about Anthony Martin, a 47 year-old man from Wisconsin, who does some extreme skydiving while, but he does it while he is inside a box, chained and handcuffed, falling from 14,500 feet and with one to help him escape. Martin is an escape artist who has performed many dangerous and impossible escaping acts since he was 10 and his latest act was the most dangerous he has performed. It was really easy for him to escape because he had made the same act 25 year before, so, it took him less than a minute to free himself, get out of the box and release his parachute. Martin started to get interested in the art of escaping when his father taught him some magic tricks when he was only 6 and when he was ten, he could escape from any place without problems and he started to work as a escaping-artist. Vocabulary Words: Drogue: it’s another way of saying parachute Somersaulted: it’s making a dangerous jump or a dangerous trick

Questions: 1) What was the most interesting thing that you learned from reading this article, and why? Explain. After reading this article about a escaping- artist falling chained inside a box, the most interesting thing I learned was that Martin had started making his escaping acts after his father had taught himhow to make them and when he was only ten years old escaping from any place without a problem. Throughout the years he might have gotten even better and made even more interesting and amazing escaping acts until he made the act of falling from a plane inside a box trying to escape from his death.I find this very interesting because I’m amazed that Martin started to make his acts when he was just a kid and that he would never had imagined that he would do such a dangerous act in the future. 2)

What new insight into the world did you gain through this article, and how will it impact your way of thinking or behaving? Explain. This article showed me that there are people in our world that can do incredible things that to others seem impossible to make. Many things are impossible to make,

but of those who believe they can do that impossible things it’s just like a new dream or an amazing adventure waiting for them. This will impact my way of thinking about the people that surround me that can do things that I and others can’t but also, about myself and all the things I am capable of doing or creating. Everyone has their own incredible dream.

Danger in Dessert? Keady, Cameron. "News." Danger in Dessert? Time Inc., 14 Aug. 2013. Web. 15 Aug. 2013.

Many people think that eating too much sugar is dangerous for their health and think that they will get obese and die, but the truth is that some sugars can be toxic to humans on a long-term effect that makes their lives shorter and with health problems. A team of researchers from Utah discovered, after testing on mice that a diet of only sugars and other mice that had a healthy diet for 58 weeks, that the lives of the mice that ate sugars wasn’t a healthy life; and the mice that ate o healthy food had a healthy and long life. Since mice have a same genetic structure as humans, anything that could kill or affect the lives of mice could also affect the lives of many people that live with an unhealthy diet based on sugars that, at some point, become toxic for them. There are foods that have sugars like candy and sodas but there are also foods that have hidden sugars that are normally consumed like pastas or ketchup without noticing and that could

affect the way of living, eating and moving of many people in the world. Vocabulary Words: Underlying: it means that something is needed, that is essential and basicfor something Consumption: it means to consume something, to take something that people consume

Questions: 1)

What was the most interesting thing that you learned from reading this article this article, and why? Explain. After reading this article about sugar that could become toxic for humans and that could reduce their life time and their health, the most interesting thing I learned was that sugar could be toxic for humans and that there´s some foods that contain hidden sugars and are consumed every day without knowing about its danger. I find this interesting because I knew that sugar could be bad for our health but I didn’t knew that it could be toxic and that some day could kill us. For now and on, I will be more careful on what I eat and if it has a large amount of sugars in it so I can have a healthy life.

2)

What new insight into the world did you gain through this article, and how will it impact your way of thinking or behaving? Explain.

This article showed me that sugar can be a very dangerous thing for humans if they only have a diet with just sugars. People should start to be more careful on what they eat and if what they eat is good for them. People from all the world must start searching for food that benefits our body, makes us live more years and that provides us a healthy life. This will impact my way of thinking about the people that live every day with an unhealthy diet that deteriorates them slowly and that the people that love them worry about their health and try to help them. The health of all the people in the world depends on how people take care of themselves and what type of food they eat.

Sunday June 23rd's Supermoon the Biggest Since 1993 Dolasia, Meera. "Sunday June 23rd's Supermoon the Biggest Since 1993." DOGOnews. DOGO Media Inc., 23 June 2013. Web. 15 Aug. 2013.

On the night of June 23, 2013, thefull moon looked bigger and brighter than it normally is and, according to astrophysicists the last time the moon was this size was in 1993. Scientistsknow it as a Supermoon because of the proximity of the moon that changes every time causing it to look bigger and brighter when it’s closer to the planet. Many people think that if the moon is too close to Earth it could cause earthquakes and tidal waves, but scientists haven’t found any connection with the increment of the moon´s

size and the chance of a natural disaster to happen. Whenever there’s a full Supermoon again, it’s a good idea to take pictures of the moon to remember the time when it was closer to Earth. Vocabulary Words: Elliptical:it means to have an oval form or a disk form Perigee:it means a point in which the moon of a planetorbits very close to it

Questions: 1)

If applicable: What causes this event, and/or what are the effects of this event? Explain. What causes the moon to look bigger and brighter is that because of the proximity of the moon to the planet and the oval orbit the moon has around the planet, the moon looks and is much closer to Earth. As an effect, the moon looks bigger than it normally looks and doesn’t cause anything to Earth´s land and oceans. The moon will get closer until it’s too close to the planet and will stay there for hours and then will return to its original and normal place.

2)

What was the most interesting thing that you learned from reading this article, and why? Explain. After reading this article about the time our moon was so close to Earth that it looked bigger and brighter, the most interesting thing I learned was that this event happened when the proximity of the moon to the planet is really small and the oval orbit the moon has around the planet also gets smaller, the moon will be closer to the planet and look bigger. I find this interesting because people think that if the moon is too far away, or to close or if is destroyed, the world will vanish because of the earthquakes and the tide waves, but our planet will be safe because that only happens in movies. In my opinion, if something happens to our moon, we will lose a beautiful thing that every night, even if its rainy, raises up to bring light to the night.
