Dear Readers

It is nearly Christmas !

Everyone I have spoken to and asked if they are all prepared for Christmas Day have said no. This makes me feel better since I haven't even started any preparation at all.

Getting our latest double month winter issue ready to go live has depleted not only my energy but also that of Rescue And Animal Care Magazine Designer Vicki who does a great job! A Santa paws applause for her!

We start winding down next week and look forward to a well deserved break until the new year.

We would like to thank our lovely advertisers and readers for their support and wish them and all our furry friends a wonderful Christmas time!

Here are just a handful of features to read inside..

n Beware of the red flags – WARNING for anyone looking to buy a pet online this Christmas Leading animal welfare organisations warn unsuspecting prospective pet owners of the dangers of buying pets online after finding more than 400 adverts included red flags that could be associated with unscrupulous breeding and selling, or a sign that the animal was illegally smuggled into the country.

The Realities of Border Collie Trust and the wonderful Border Collie

The Joy, the Chaos, and the Running in Circles (Usually Literally)

Working with Border Collies in rescue is equal parts uplifting, exhausting, and unintentionally comedic. These dogs are brilliant, sensitive, quirky, and occasionally capable of outsmarting every human on the premises—including the one holding the treat bag.

The Positives:

• Watching nervous, shut-down collies slowly switch back on—ears lifting, tails loosening, eyes brightening as they realise the world isn’t as scary as they thought.

• Seeing the clever ones finally use their intelligence for good, not just for unlocking doors, scaling fences, or reprogramming the baby gate.

• The moment an anxious collie chooses to trust you—that quiet nuzzle that feels like winning an Olympic medal.

• Helping them find homes that truly “get” them: people who understand that a collie’s idea of relaxation can vary from intensely supervising everyone in the room to taking up the whole settee. Their individuality is so fascinating

• Those pure moments of joy: a first proper zoom, a breakthrough training session, or the proud trot of a dog who’s mastered “sit” and is now fully prepared to negotiate terms.

The Negatives:

•Taking in dogs who’ve been misunderstood—labelled “naughty” when they were simply frightened, sometimes under-stimulated but often over-stimulated or smarter than their routine.

• Managing the emotional toll of behavioural challenges, particularly when you know the dog isn’t “difficult”—just wired like a highperformance machine in a world of leisurely strolling pedestrians.

• Supporting new adopters whose expectations are sometimes a little… ambitious. Many imagine their new collie will arrive fully trained, perfectly

behaved, and ready to slot seamlessly into family life by Tuesday afternoon. Patience, however, can be surprisingly shortlived—especially when the dog has the audacity to behave like a dog adjusting to a brand-new world.

• The heartache when progress is slow, or when difficult decisions must be made.

• The daily endurance test: juggling calls for help, the everyday bureaucracy of the modern world, enrichment, paperwork, and the collie who has just herded your broom cupboard.

• The breed’s ongoing belief that fences are merely polite suggestions.

Yet, despite the challenges—despite the tears, the chewed leads, the barking at invisible sheep, and the uncanny ability to sense the exact moment you’ve sat down—it remains a privilege to give these dogs a second chance. Every collie who finds their confidence, their place, and their person makes the whirlwind worthwhile.

Can You Give One of these Collies a loving Home?

PLEASE

Willow 4 year old male

Willow is 4 years old, he originally came into our care as his owner didn't feel she had enough time to give him due to work commitments and having a young child. He then spent two weeks in another home but was returned as he snapped when a stranger reached out to stroke him (no contact was made).

Willow can be a little unsure when first meeting strangers but given a little time he soon over comes his fears. He is housetrained, is good when left alone, travels well, loves to play ball and is good with most other dogs. He does lunge at traffic when out walking.

Bobby

Bobby 5 year old male tri coloured short coated collie

Bobby is a 5 year old entire tri coloured short coated collie. He originally came into our care via another rescue we are told his owner relinquished due to work commitments. He then spent 7 weeks in another home but was returned as he growled at the female owner whenever she tried to correct him. He only behaved this way towards her when the male owner was not at home.

Bobby is friendly meeting people, is housetrained, is good when left alone for odd hours and travels well.

He can be a little unsure around other dogs but once he knows them he is fine. Does chase cats.

Alexia is a 14 month old Tri coloured Collie x GSD

She came into our care from a rescue in Ireland, we are told she has recently had a litter of pups.

Alexia is a friendly girl but can be a little shy when she firsts meets new people so would be better suited to a quieter home without young children. She can be a little unsure meeting other dogs and she chases cats.

Since being in our care she has been clean, calm and quiet in our kennels and she walks well on a lead.

Maddie

Maddie is a 1 year old brindle collie cross

She came into our care from a rescue in Ireland.

She is a confident friendly but can get very excitable so may be better suited with slightly older children or those that are used to boisterous dogs.

She is good meeting other dogs but can be over the top with them, she loves to play ball, has good recall and travels well.

She has met our centre cat and will chase so will not live with.

Roxy

Roxy – A Gentle Star Waiting to Shine

Roxy is a gorgeous 4-year-old Border Collie who’s ready to leave her past behind and start the next chapter of her life with someone kind and patient. She hasn’t always had it easy, but this girl has a heart full of love –she’s just waiting for the right person to help her let it out.

Sensitive and Sweet, Roxy can be unsure with new people and a bit nervous about being handled. She needs someone who understands that trust takes time. Move at her pace, and you’ll soon discover what a loving companion she truly is.

Peaceful Home Wanted, Busy environments aren’t her thing. She thrives in calm, quiet surroundings, so she’s looking for an adult-only home with no other pets. She’s a one-ofa-kind girl, and she prefers to have your heart all to herself.

Adventure Buddy, Roxy enjoys her walks and is happy to pass other dogs while out and about—she just prefers to be the solo star when she’s back home.

Your Future Snuggle Partner, Once Roxy trusts you, the bond is magical. She becomes affectionate, gentle, and wonderfully cuddly –a treasure for those who take the time to really see her.

Roxy is searching for someone special who’ll give her the space, patience, and love she needs to shine.

Hello my name is Shep I am 6 years old

I have been around for 6 years but sadly spent most of this time chained up outdoors, then my owner decided he didn't want me around at all so he sent me to a nearby rescue where I spent my days free of a chain and mixing with female dogs but nobody that came to visit wanted me so I'm now living in a recue that is just for collies.

Although I enjoy my time here having plenty of fuss, playing ball and going for long walks I would really like a home of my own. I did go to live with a lady for a week and whilst I was very good indoors, apart from emptying the bin she struggled to walk me as I do sometimes stalk and lunge towards other dogs and traffic and on one occasion when two dogs were peering at me over a wall I slipped my collar and jumped over to them, we did have a bit of an altercation but non of us were injured. I also spent 11 days in another home where i was very well behaved and happily met other people and even a couple of other dogs but then one morning I managed to get passed my owner and down the drive and on seeing a small dog i ran up to it and grabbed it, I didn't hurt it but obviously the owner was very shocked and upset.

Shep

Rico is a 5 year old neutered Black and White short coated Border Collie Cross

He came into our care from a rescue in Ireland. He was an unwanted pet, we are told he lived with children but we don't know what ages they were. He has lived in a rural area so will need introducing to new environments gradually.

Rico is a shy boy and can get worried when meeting strangers and if approached suddenly may bark, he requires time and space as once he overcomes his fears he is an affectionate boy. We wouldn't house him to live with young children.

He loves to play with toys and enjoys running around off lead in our enclosed outdoor area. He does sometimes bark at other dogs but if introduced correctly is usually OK. He is strong on the lead and when out walking in residential areas he does lunge towards traffic.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is a 5 year old tri coloured short coated collie cross

She was found tethered to a fence and was never reclaimed.

She has been friendly towards all kennel staff and although a little shy being handled by the vet coped very well.

She should be suitable to live with children over 8yrs old. She is clean in her kennel and has been fine travelling in a vehicle.

She does chase cats and is a little worried by other dogs so will need to be an only pet.

Reggie is a 14 month old entire large cross breed we are told he is a Patterdale x GSD?

He originally came in to our care as the owner was suffering with mental health problems. He then spent 6mths in another home but was returned as his owner didn't feel she could cope with him.

Although Reggie has been raised around children he would benefit from a calm home as he does get over stimulate easily and then finds it difficult to relax. He is housetrained, travels well and responds to basic.

He isn't really used to being left alone so this will need to be built up overtime.

Buddy is an 8yr old entire collie cross, he is small in height but still weighs 19kg

He came into our care from another rescue but we don't know his history

He is a friendly boy and should be suitable to live with children over 7yrs old. He is good with other dogs and is quiet in kennels.

Wolfie

Wolfie Male 6 years

Buddy

Hi there I go by the name of Wolfie I was born 6 years ago and when I was old enough I went to live with my dad, we spent our days together around the local community I loved everyone and the children were great as they would run around playing ball with me.

I had a fantastic life but then my dad became very ill and he had to go into a hospice. The day he said goodbye to me was the worst day of my life but he told me to be strong as someone else out there would love me as much as he did. His words gave me hope but after a year in kennels still nobody came for me. I have now been moved to BCT and although it's very nice here and I get plenty of walks and treats what i want more than anything is a place I can call home again with my very own family.

Please give me a chance I am good with people, children, other dogs and travel well but most important I have lots of love to give.

Bayley is a 5 year old neutered Collie Cross

He originally came into our care from his own home due to his owners declining health. He then spent 7 days in a other home but was returned as he snapped at an adult visitor when she walked through the door and leant over to greet him.

Bayley is a little unsure when meeting new people so will require an owner that is willing to be hands off in the early days and give him the time and space he requires to gain trust in people. He would benefit from a quiet home without young children or lots of visitors.

Bayley is housetrained, responds to basic commands, plays with toys, travels well, and is calm and settled overnight.

He tends to avoid other dogs but can react to them if they react first. He is worried by traffic and loud noises.

Bayley

Is YOUR dog safe to go outside? Common winter misconceptions could put your dog in danger

With colder weather returning and more areas facing icy pavements and heavy rainfall, dog owners are being warned that common assumptions about winter walks may be putting their pets at risk.

Many dogs react differently to the cold depending on their size, coat type and age and not taking this into consideration can leave dogs struggling far sooner than people realise.

Chris Maxted, director of dog safety gate company Dog-G8 and pet safety advocate warns Brits about the winter walking mistakes that could place dogs in danger over the coming weeks.

Assuming all dogs cope with cold in the same way

“When cold weather arrives, the point at which a dog needs a coat is lower than many owners expect, and choosing the right layer at the right time helps stop the walk becoming uncomfortable.

“When the temperature reaches 4 degrees Celsius, thinner-coated, small and older dogs can struggle more, and this is the moment when adding a coat becomes very helpful for most of them.”

Walking too long in harsh temperatures

“By minus six, only short outings are suitable for most dogs, and coats

become necessary for nearly all smaller breeds as the cold becomes harsh within minutes.

“At minus nine and below, time outside should be kept to quick toilet breaks, with small and thin-coated dogs wearing a warm coat and returning indoors promptly.”

Missing the early signs that a dog is getting too cold

“Owners should watch for early signs that the cold is getting too much, such as slight shivering, slowing down or hesitating to walk, as these signals show that more warmth or a shorter route is needed.

“Wet conditions make the cold bite harder, and rain, snow or slush can leave even well-coated breeds needing extra protection to stay comfortable.”

How different dogs react to each winter temperature

• 4 degrees Celsius: Small, toy, thin-coated and older dogs lose body heat quickly at this point and often

need a coat to stay comfortable, especially in wet or windy conditions.

• 1 degree Celsius: Most breeds start to feel the cold, and many dogs benefit from a coat unless they are large and heavily coated.

• 0 degrees Celsius: All dogs begin to feel more strain, and shorter outings can help small, thin-coated and older dogs stay comfortable.

• –4 degrees Celsius: Small and medium dogs can struggle even with a coat, so walks should stay brief and steady, particularly for short-haired or older dogs.

• –6 degrees Celsius: Nearly all smaller breeds need a coat and only short outings, while large dogs also begin to reach their limit in harsh weather.

• –9 degrees Celsius and below: All dogs should only be out for quick toilet breaks, with small and thin-coated breeds wearing a warm coat and returning indoors promptly.

Tasha Ghouri surprises JustGiving Award winner and her hearing dog in heart-warming video

A Sheffield woman and her life-changing hearing dog have been announced as winners in this year’s JustGiving Awards - with Strictly finalist and hearing loss advocate Tasha Ghouri on hand to deliver the surprise.

Sarah Bond, 35, and her hearing dog Albert, 10, were crowned winners in the Stronger Together category in recognition of their inspiring fundraising efforts for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Born profoundly deaf, Sarah was partnered with Albert in 2025 to alerts her to crucial sounds such as the doorbell, alarms, and even her name own name. Together, the pair have raised more than £17,000 for the charity that brought them together, taking on everything from the charity’s popular 28 Challenge to creative fundraisers including handmade Christmas cards and sponsored walks.

Sarah said: “Thanks to Albert, I no longer feel isolated and alone. Instead, I feel confident and have independencesomething I’d never had before. That's why I want to raise as much money as possible for Hearing Dogs, so that they can change more lives.

“We never expected to win an award for our fundraising. It means a lot to me that the award came from Tasha, she’s an inspiration. Especially because she’s deaf like me, it feels like we have a connection as she knows what it’s like.”

Their incredible efforts were recognised when Tasha Ghouri, who was born deaf and received her cochlear implant at age five, surprised Sarah at the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People training centre to personally present her award. The heartwarming moment saw Sarah thanked by the charity’s team before spending time with some of the centre’s adorable puppies.

Tasha said: “Surprising Sarah and Albert was truly emotional and it was an absolute honour to give them their JustGiving award. It warmed my heart to see how much this meant to her.

“As someone who was born deaf and

wears a cochlear implant, I have experienced first-hand the challenges that so many still face, which is why it’s so important to celebrate those who, like Sarah, go above and beyond to help others. Their work is inspirational.”

Sarah and Albert were one of 20 finalists named for the 2025 JustGiving Awards this year, after more than 18,000 nominations were submitted by the public. To be nominated, entrants had to have used JustGiving to raise money for a charity or personal cause over the last 12 months.

Pascale Harvie, President and General Manager of JustGiving, said: “Over the last 25 years, we’ve seen more than £7 billion raised for good causes by millions of brilliant, passionate fundraisers on JustGiving. The Awards are our chance to celebrate that extraordinary community and shine a light on the remarkable individuals whose courage, compassion, and sheer commitment truly inspire us all.

“After the incredibly tough job of whittling thousands of phenomenal nominees down to just 20 finalists, the public made a powerful choice. Sarah and Albert’s story is a beautiful example

of how one life-changing partnership can inspire extraordinary kindness. Their journey captures the very essence of what the JustGiving Awards are all about. Congratulations, Sarah and Albert.”

Vicky Ryan, Community Fundraising Manager for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People said: “Sarah is genuinely one of the kindest, most generous, and talented people I’ve had the privilege of working with, so I was absolutely thrilled to hear that Tasha - someone she admired so deeply on Strictly Come Dancing - would be surprising her with this award.

“Sarah is an exceptionally dedicated fundraiser who always goes above and beyond. It’s been magical to watch her creative fundraising ideas come to life and inspire so many others to get involved with the charity’s fundraising challenges.”

Britain’s Pampered Pets get the star treatment this Christmas

• One in three owners say their pets will be unwrapping a Christmas gift

A quarter would rather cut back on themselves than their pet

Britain’s pets are being spoiled rotten this Christmas, with new research1 from specialist pet insurance provider Insure Your Paws revealing that more than one in three (37%) will receive their very own festive gift, with 41% of dog owners giving gifts compared with 31% of cat owners - and one in four (24%) owners saying they would rather cut back on spending for themselves than for their pet.

The survey of 1,000 UK cat and dog owners, conducted by Opinium, shows that nearly two-thirds (65%) consider their pet a member of the family, while one in eight (12%) even confess they love their pet more than anyone else in their household.

When it comes to comfort, more than a quarter of dog owners (29%) and two fifths (41%) of cat owners say their pets

snuggle up on their beds at night, and more than half (53%) of dog owners and nearly three quarters (72%) of cat owners say their pet has a regular spot on the sofa.

Almost a third (29%) affectionately refer to their pets as their “fur babies”, while a quarter (25%) admit to having a “truly pampered” pet. And despite the cost-of-living squeeze, a quarter (24%) of owners say “money is no object” when it comes to their pet’s health and happiness - proving that for many, pets remain firmly at the top of the Christmas list.

Andrew Simpson, Head of Pet at Insure Your Paws, said: “This research shows just how deeply people’s pets are woven into family life - and how much owners prioritise their wellbeing. It’s wonderful

to see such devotion, especially at Christmas, but it’s also a reminder that our love for our pets should extend to protecting them if something goes wrong.”

Insure Your Paws offers flexible, lifetime pet insurance for dogs and cats from eight weeks old, with a choice of vet fee cover up to £20,000 and optional extras such as ‘Find My Pet’, ‘Saying Goodbye’ and ‘Away from Home’. All policies include free 24/7 access to Assist Your Paws, a veterinary careline offering unlimited advice day and night.

A Winter of Welcomes: Creating an Allergy-Friendly Home for You, Your Pets and Your Guests

Winter brings its own kind of magic. The lights start to twinkle, the evenings grow longer, and our pets seem to edge even closer as the temperature drops. From the bustle of December gatherings to the quieter, calmer days that follow in January, our homes become places of warmth, company, and comfort. They also become places where indoor allergens settle much more easily than we realise.

As we close windows against the cold and turn the heating up, the air inside our homes becomes far less mobile. Add pets spending more time indoors, extra jumpers and blankets, and a steady flow of visitors, and it is no surprise that winter often brings more sneezing, itchy eyes, and general irritation than any other season. What feels like a cosy retreat can quickly become a space where allergens thrive.

Indoor allergens increase for several reasons. Pet allergens, which come mainly from saliva and sweat rather than

fur collect on sofas, bedding, carpets and clothing. Dust mites flourish in centrally heated rooms. Pollen particles

cling to coats and pet fur long after the autumn season ends, and mould spores can settle in damp corners as temperatures fluctuate. By mid-winter, many homes are carrying far more than festive decorations.

Creating a home that feels inviting, calm, and comfortable throughout the season does not need to be complicated. A few thoughtful habits, supported by Bio-Life International’s specialist products, can make a real difference to how your home feels — both for the people who live in it and the guests who visit.

Preparing Your Home for the Festive Footfall

Winter is a social season for most households. Whether you are hosting a Christmas gathering, welcoming relatives for an overnight stay, or simply enjoying more evenings in with your pets, reducing indoor allergens helps everyone feel more comfortable. When visitors come and go, and pets spend more hours curled up on soft furnishings, allergens circulate quickly unless they are managed.

Bio-Life International’s range is designed precisely for this time of year — when homes are warmer, doors are opening and closing, and fresh air is in short supply.

The Bio-Life International Winter Toolkit

PetAlCleanse® (Cat & Dog)

Winter encourages close contact with pets, which means any allergens on their coats transfer more easily onto furniture and fabrics. PetAlCleanse® is a gentle, weekly, wipe-on, wipe-off lotion

that removes pet allergens at their source. It is ideal for households expecting guests who may be sensitive to pets, and it helps families enjoy the closeness of the season without the usual discomfort.

HomeCleanse® Anti-Allergen Spray

Soft furnishings tend to see constant use during the colder months, from spare beds made up for visitors to sofas claimed by pets.

HomeCleanse® neutralises allergens from dust mites, pets, pollen, and mould on mattresses, throws, rugs, and other fabrics. It is especially useful when preparing your home for visitors and again in January when everything settles back into routine.

AirCleanse® AntiAllergen Spray

With windows closed, indoor air can quickly feel heavy and stale. AirCleanse® helps clear airborne pet, dust mite, mould, and pollen allergens, creating a fresher, lighter indoor atmosphere. It is ideal before gatherings, during busy evenings when several people and pets are sharing

one room, or simply when your home needs a breath of fresh air without letting the cold in.

FabriCleanse® Laundry Additive

Winter brings extra blankets, thicker clothing, heavier bedding, and plenty of pet throws.

FabriCleanse® removes allergens from all these fabrics during the wash. Whether you are preparing guest bedding or giving winter layers a refresh, it helps keep fabrics clean, comfortable, and far less likely to trigger irritation.

A Season to Enjoy, Not Endure

The winter months should feel warm and restorative, not stuffy or uncomfortable. By managing allergens at their source, you can enjoy all the best parts of the season — from festive gatherings to peaceful evenings by the fire, without the unwanted sneezes and sniffles.

With Bio-Life International, you can keep your home feeling welcoming, warm, and comfortable for everyone who steps inside, whether they arrive with wrapped presents or wagging tails.

Breathe fully. Live freely with Bio-Life International. www.biolife-international.co.uk

A Peaceful Goodbye at Home: Denise’s Final Gift to Milly

When Denise Longleat, 45, from Bedford, first adopted Milly, a timid five-yearold rescue cat, she never imagined the two of them would share nearly two decades together. 15 years later, Milly had become part of the very fabric of Denise’s life, a much-loved pet and companion but as Milly’s chronic kidney disease worsened and she stopped eating and refused treats, Denise faced the heartbreaking decision every pet owner dreads.

What she hadn’t expected, however, was the sense of calm and dignity that would come with saying goodbye at home.

Just days earlier, Denise had taken

Milly to the vet for a routine check-up.

Milly had always loathed vet visits, the carrier, the car, the strange smells and bright lights were very distressing to her.

‘She’d shake the whole way there”

Denise recalls. “It broke my heart, but I wanted to make sure I was doing everything right for her.”

At the appointment that Saturday, the news was not encouraging. Milly’s

condition had deteriorated more rapidly than expected. The vet gently explained that while they could continue supportive care, Milly was now nearing the final stretch. Denise returned home with Milly curled quietly in her lap, and after a tearful evening, she reached out to Cloud 9 Vets, a service specialising in gentle, at-home euthanasia.

“I just kept thinking that everyone wants to die at home so why wouldn’t our animals?” she says.

Cloud 9 arranged a visit quickly. The vet who arrived at Denise’s door was wonderful. ” Calm, soft-spoken, and

deeply respectful, she took time to sit with Denise and Milly, asking about the cat’s life, favourite spots, and small habits grounding what was a very sad time in memory and gratitude.

After giving Denise as long as she needed, the vet administered a gentle sedative. Milly drifted into a deep, easy sleep in her favourite blanket on the sofa. “It was so peaceful,” Denise says. “She wasn’t scared. There was no car journey. No cold table. Just home, with me.”

Only once Milly was fully asleep did the vet give the final injection, allowing

her to pass quietly, surrounded by everything familiar.

It was a stark contrast to some of the stories Denise remembers from Covid, when restrictions forced many vets to put pets to sleep in car parks while owners stood outside. “I promised myself I’d never let that happen to Milly,” she says. “And I didn’t.”

After the vet left, a representative from the crematorium arrived. He waited outside, giving Denise space and time to say goodbye. When she was ready, he gently wrapped Milly and took her into his care, promising to return her ashes the following week.

Now, looking back, Denise feels certain she made the right choice. “I’ll always miss her,” she says. “But this was the best goodbye I could have given her. From now on, I’ll always have my pets put to sleep at home. They deserve that peace.”

For Denise, Milly’s final moments were not just an ending, instead a quiet, loving act of gratitude for 15 special years.

Cold Mornings, Warm Noses: Sniffy Winter Walks

Shorter walks. Richer sniffs. Simple indoor scent games for winter days.

Some dogs seem energised by frost, moving as though the cold air switches them on. If they are fit, well-conditioned and the footing is safe, let them enjoy using that winter energy. For many others, the season naturally shifts the pace. Older dogs, short coated breeds such as the whippet, or those recovering from injury may prefer a shorter, more scent-led walk before returning home to warmth and a snooze by the fire.

That does not mean less enrichment. A shorter walk can still offer meaningful engagement when the nose takes the lead. What cannot be extended outdoors can be enriched indoors. Even a few minutes of scentwork can leave a dog feeling more fulfilled, emotionally settled and less inclined to chew your new Christmas slippers!

Before heading out or settling in, support the body so the brain can do the work. If appropriate, apply a natural, unscented nose and paw balm before and after walks to help protect against grit and salt. Use a well-fitted coat for dogs that feel the cold more keenly. Consider slightly higher calories for dogs who remain very active outdoors in colder weather. Keep a warm towel or drying mitts by the door so they can transition comfortably back inside. Once settled, a short scent game is a great way to finish off a walk with a bit of fun mental stimulation.

Treasure Hunt

A simple indoor scent game that encourages calm investigation

Gather several cardboard boxes and space them a short distance apart in a room. For very small or less confident dogs, use boxes suited to their size - and let’s be honest, most of us have a few left over from the festive season. You can even add some loosely scrunched cardboard inside to make the investigation more tactile and rewarding.

With your dog in another room, place a couple of treats or a favourite toy inside one box. Invite them back in and use a clear cue such as “Find it”. Once they have located the item, repeat using a different box. Over time this helps dogs

search with purpose rather than diving in randomly. Some enthusiastic dismantling of cardboard may occur early on. That is part of the process and usually part of the fun.

Hide one special treat in just one of the boxes and ask your dog to locate that single target. Keep sessions short. One or two rounds are usually enough, especially following a walk.

A short winter walk followed by an indoor scent game can offer the same sense of purpose as a longer, warmerweather walk. When temperatures drop, simply shift the adventure indoors with a short sniffy search.

Winter Walk Essentials

• Well fitted coat for short haired dogs or dogs that feel the cold more keenly

• Natural, unscented nose and paw balm, such as those from The Dog and I, applied before and after the walk

• Warm towel or drying mitts waiting by the door

• High value treats for a post walk indoor scent game

• Water resistant lead or harness for wet or icy terrain

• Extra calories or a suitable snack for dogs that stay physically active in cold weather

• Reflective gear or a light for darker mornings and evenings

The gift you feel good giving

Adopting a rescued horse or donkey from Redwings makes a wonderful Christmas gift, and it’s one that you’ll feel great giving.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is responsible for more than 1300 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules at its sanctuary sites across the UK.

Sponsorship of a Redwings resident like beautiful Shire Cross Fox or teeny tiny Shetland Tinkerbell costs from just £2 a month or a £25 one-off donation, and you or your loved one will receive a beautiful welcome pack and photo with an introduction to your new friend, regular email and postal updates about their lives at Redwings and even an invite to their birthday party (yes really!). Children will also receive a free Young and Mini Reds magazine which is packed full of activities and articles all about horses and ponies.

Standing at an impressive 16.3 hands high, stunning Adoption Star Shire cross Fox is a true gentle giant who loves to bend his head over the fence for a cuddle with his visitors.

While Fox now enjoys a peaceful life in his paddock at the charity’s Caldecott Visitor Centre, in Norfolk, his future was not always so certain. This handsome gent arrived at Redwings in 2010 as part of a large group of horses when he was

just a few months old. Their owner had sadly passed away and no one was able to look after them.

Fox has a condition which means he experiences stiffness in his legs so his chances of finding a new home to suit his needs were slim. However, he now

has a permanent home at the Sanctuary under the watchful eye of Redwings’ vet team.

From just £2 per month, you can sponsor Fox and ensure he and his fourlegged friends continue to enjoy happy and healthy lives at Redwings.

Meet adorable rescued horses and donkeys, take a peaceful paddock walk, and treat yourself to a delicious slice of cake in the café. Before you leave, be sure to browse the gift shop - every purchase helps care for the charity’s residents. Well-behaved dogs on leads are more than welcome too!

How to travel safely with pets in winter

There’s nothing better than starting the day with a lovely dog walk. But if you’re not lucky enough to live beside open countryside, for most of us this means a journey in the car to get to our favourite dog walking spot.

The 4pets Caree

The 4pets Caree is a state-of-the-art travel system for small pets, to 15kg. It securely fits to the car seat, either using the standard seatbelt or via ISOFIX latching points. It's designed for safety and has passed TÜV's crash- testing regime. It's also designed for ease of use, with a door on each side (one-handed opening and closing), and a very cosy bed that's easily removed for hand washing.

In winter it is important that your car is suitably equipped to cope with the winter conditions. It’s worth getting a few things together so your car is prepared for winter. A simple, but very effective product to keep your vehicle moving safely on snowy roads is AutoSock.

AutoSock are reusable textile socks, sold in pairs, which are easily pulled over the driving wheels when extra grip is needed on snow or ice.

Perfect for anyone who is nervous when driving on snow or ice.

Crash-tested dog cages

4pets PRO dog cages, made in Switzerland and crash-tested and approved by the German TÜV, have been designed to protect both humans and dogs, thanks to their Impact Protection System. This is a patented high-tech rear panel which flexes when it’s hit, absorbing and then releasing the kinetic energy in a controlled way so as to give a dog every possible chance of surviving a crash.

They’re for use in the vehicle boot space, or in a pickup. 4pets PRO are exceptionally smart and well made, also lighter and warmer than a similar sized steel cage. Prices from £294.95.

Thule Allax cage

Allax comes with the reassurance of crash-tested safety, to TÜV SÜD standards, and if correctly positioned these cages will contain even the heaviest dogs in a vehicle crash, giving fully reliable protection to the human passengers.

Thule Allax is a well-designed, wellengineered and well-made TÜV approved crash-tested dog cages for use in the car boot; as with the 4pets cages, you need to choose a size that will fit in your vehicle.

Crash-tested car harness

Thule Cappy harness

Thule Cappy is a crash-tested and TÜV approved harness designed for car journeys. It uses an existing rear seat belt - no other parts are required - which allows the dog to stand up or sit down, but limits front to back and side to side movement.

The dog steps into the harness - Cappy is much easier to use than a pull-over-the-head type of harness - which is then clipped together across the back. Padded mesh panels provide breathability and comfort, and the whole harness is designed to be easily wiped clean.

“Changed for good” - nine cruelly dumped cats given Wicked names

Nine cats who were cruelly dumped in a single mesh carrier by a busy Herefordshire road have had their lives ‘changed for the better’ by a kind-hearted member of the public, a vet and charity team who have since named them after characters from Wicked.

The four male and five female black cats were found late at night in a layby of the A465 by Iola Thompson, 18, and her partner Ollie Desborough, 20, who had paused to pick up soft drinks at nearby Lock’s Garage. They had planned to pause for the refreshments in the parking area, which is screened from the road by trees, before continuing home to King’s Acre when they spotted the cats.

Iola explains: “We pulled off the road and I immediately saw the nine sets of glowing eyes caught in the headlights, beaming back at me from the carrier. I was really scared, I didn’t know whether it was a trap. It was 10.50pm and pitch black. I asked Ollie to get out and look which was when we discovered it was cats and maybe kittens. I knew we couldn’t leave until we’d found somewhere for them. We called our parents who rang the police who couldn't help and RSPCA who were closed. Luckily, we have a dog so called our emergency vet and were told to take them straight in.”

Iola and Ollie picked up the heavy carrier filled with the meowing, terrified cats and they were safely admitted to Vets4Pets at Pets at Home on Commercial Road by half-past midnight.

Upon arrival the cats, who are around 1-2 years old, were released from the filthy carrier which barely held them all. Assessment by Practice Owner and Veterinary Surgeon Dr Elliot Goodwin, found them covered in their own excrement and visibly stressed after such a traumatic experience, having been left on the roadside in wind and rain.

Dr Goodwin expressed shock and deep concern that someone could feel so desperate that they would abandon innocent animals in such dangerous and horrible conditions.

He said: “It was harrowing to see them so frightened, and although we wanted to comfort them, we adopted a hands-off approach to avoid adding to their stress. They needed time to rest and recover before we could carry out a thorough assessment.” Elliot went on to remind owners that whatever the circumstance, there is never any justifi-

cation for this kind of action.

The cats were neutered, microchipped, received flea and worm treatments as well as removal of a broken tooth for one of the cats free of charge. They were also vaccinated and tested for FIV before being transferred to Cats Protection Herefordshire Cat Centre.

He added: “Over the following days, it was incredibly rewarding to see their personalities start to emerge as they learned to trust us, even during health checks and neutering procedures. We were delighted that Cats Protection could support their journey to a better future, and we look forward to hearing how they settle into their new homes.”

The cats have been named The Wizard, Elphaba Thropp, Glinda Upland, Madame Morrible, Doctor Dillamond, Dorothy Gale, Nessarose Thropp, Boq Woodsman and Fiyero Tigelaar after characters from the Wicked film and book franchise.

Iola adds: “The day after we found the cats I had felt awful, I didn’t understand how somebody could do something so cruel. Anything could have happened if we hadn’t found them, but I realised we had done a good thing and at least now they will have a better future. My Dad has even said he’s hoping to adopt one of them!”

Faye Churchill, Cats Protection

Herefordshire Cat Centre Manager, says: “We are extremely grateful to Iola and Ollie for rushing all nine cats to safety and to Dr Goodwin and the team at Vets4Pets for their kindness, generosity and care of the cats before they came into the centre.

“We named the cats after characters from Wicked because thanks to a real team effort from all involved, their lives really have been changed for the better and for good. They are lovely cats with gentle personalities and although understandably nervous from their ordeal, they are settling in beautifully.”

Over the past 12 months, the charity has taken in more than 26,000 cats who were given up or abandoned.

Faye adds: “There is never any excuse to dump cats in such a casual, callous way as if they were rubbish. Ironically the layby where they were found is just a three-minute drive from our centre. We would always encourage anybody who is struggling to contact us, other rescue organisations or a vet. We may not be able to take the cats in straight away, but we will always work with you to find the best solution for you and the cats.”

Cats Protection urges action as the winter cold snap bites hard

As winter temperatures plummet across the UK, Cats Protection is urging people to keep a caring eye on stray and abandoned cats.

Cold snaps can worsen conditions such as arthritis for all cats and wintry chills pose a particular danger to outdoor cats without access to shelter or food. For them, the deadly risk of hypothermia or painful frostbite is real.

Daniel Warren-Cummings, Cats Protection Central Behaviour Officer, said: “In the past 12 months, our teams have taken in more than 26,000 cats who have been left behind by life, including over 3,000 kittens from unwanted litters.

“Through no fault of their own, these cats have been given up or abandoned. They don’t know why they've been discarded, can’t tell us how they feel. They know only cold, fear and hunger. But we’re there to listen until the tough times pass.”

This winter, Cats Protection has launched a fundraising and awareness campaign (cats.org.uk/alfie) to reach even more stray and abandoned cats in need of urgent help.

As well as raising cash to provide food, shelter and care for neglected cats, Cats Protection has some simple tips to ensure all cats stay safe and warm this winter:

• Provide warm, draught-free resting spots. Self-heating pads are ideal for older cats.

• Tap your car bonnet and check underneath before starting up – cats love to hide there.

• Check sheds and garages to ensure that cats seeking shelter don’t become trapped.

• Wipe your cat’s paws and coat when they come in. Grit, salt or antifreeze can be toxic if licked.

• Provide fresh water, checking it cannot freeze over. An indoor litter tray means your cat doesn't have to venture out.

• Consider keeping your cat in at night when temperatures drop – and lock cat flaps to prevent them sneaking out.

Dying kittens in landfill woodpile tempted to safety with kippers

Four hungry, dying kittens have been saved from the dangers of a landfill site where they were discovered within a house-high

woodpile and tempted to safety using kippers.

Staff at Westcombe Waste in Somerton reached out to Cats Protection Yeovil for assistance with feral cats at the waste management and recycling site on Somertonfield Road after they discovered two unwell kittens and rushed them to the vet. The duo sadly did not survive but Rebecca Dawson, Coordinator for the volunteer-run local branch of the cat welfare charity, soon arrived to assist with the remaining cats, not expecting to find any more kittens.

She quickly set up two security cameras and humane traps which allow her to track and trap feral cats without causing unnecessary stress as they are wild in nature and highly fearful of humans.

Initially spotting purely adult cats, Rebecca prioritised vet care and new outdoor homes for two pregnant cats and one limping female cat named Stumpy, who was shockingly missing a paw. It wasn’t until Rebecca returned for the next wave of cats, expecting to collect just healthy males in need of neutering, that a high-pitched meow caught her attention. To Rebecca’s surprise, the tiny cries led her to a 7-8m pile of wood that was waiting to be sorted and four black-and-white kittens emerged.

She says: “I headed up the hill next to the woodpile armed with kippers to tempt the kittens out but at the top of the hill I panicked. Stretching out behind the pile was a water treatment pool with rubber protective sides, ideal for waste management but potentially deadly to curious kittens. I returned to the other side of the pile and flung kippers across the wood, hoping to guide them away from the pool and onto a bridge that I quickly made down from the pile.”

The kittens were too scared to venture out but Rebecca quickly recorded their frantic meows and played the sound from behind a large tyre where she remained out of sight. With more kippers

in a nearby trap, the bravest ringleader of the kittens, a small mainly white boy with black patches, now named Jack, led the quartet into the trap, but valiantly ran out to let them eat while he kept watch.

“I knew that was my only chance to get them, so I held my breath as Jack ran off but I played the recording again and thankfully his siblings’ recorded meows brought him back. He checked they were all safe and eventually joined them inside the trap for food and I had caught them at last using the remote control.”

The one female and three male kittens were around 5-6 five to six weeks old, malnourished and riddled with fleas and worms. They were underweight at just 300g, the usual weight of a two-week-old kitten. Jack, Jill, Skip and Marley, as they have been named, were all suffering from diarrhoea from the worms and their time outside. It was not certain they would survive and after two days in care feisty little Jack crashed, finally relaxing and letting his exhaustion take over.

Rebecca says: “We really weren’t sure

Jack would make it. He'd been so brave and acted like the Mum for his siblings but was no more than a baby. After plenty of TLC and two weeks of specialist food, he’s now a lively, healthy kitten and all four love nothing more than playing together and making mischief.

“I’m so grateful to the lads on site and Sophie the manager, they have really worked with me to help the cats and we just have around four or five of the remaining male cats to trap and neuter. I think everyone was surprised that there were around 20 cats in total, they’d kept themselves well hidden!”

Jack, Jill, Skip and Marley’s details will be posted at www.cats.org.uk/yeovil when they are ready for adoption.

Injured stray kitten bounces back after leg amputation

A stray kitten rescued from the streets of Bedford was discovered to have such a terrible injury that one of her legs had to be amputated.

Five-week Mocha was taken into Scott Veterinary Clinic by a kind member of the public who had spotted her plight. Mocha was alone and scared with no mother or siblings in sight.

A vet examination showed the mysterious injury to her back leg was so severe that amputation was deemed the best course of treatment.

The volunteer team at Cats Protection Bedford & Biggleswade was called in to take over care for the dark tortoiseshell mite, and she was placed with a fosterer who could carefully watch over her recuperation.

Because of her young age, Mocha was able to quickly recover from her trauma, showing no signs of letting her disability slow her down, and she loves racing around chasing toys.

The cost of Mocha’s treatment was in excess of £350, and the local team has launched a fundraiser to cover the unexpected costs www.justgiving.com/page/bedford-andbiggleswade-mocha-the-kitten

Tamsin Eastwood, Coordinator said: “It has been a joy to see Mocha bounce back. We will probably never know how she sustained her injury, or why such a young kitten was all alone, but it is heartwarming to know that she is no longer suffering. She will soon be adopted and will have her whole life ahead of her in a home where she is safe and loved.

“We are a small team who dedicate our time to helping cats and kittens, who

find themselves in difficulty and need a helping hand. But as a charity we rely on our generous supporters to help us pay for vital vet treatment and care costs.

We are so grateful to anyone that donates to our fundraiser, which ensures

we can carry on supporting cats like Mocha.”

In the past year alone, Cats Protection has taken in more than 5,000 stray cats like Mocha who were left behind by life. Many arrive sick, injured, or emaciated after struggling to survive alone. They can’t tell their story, but your support can give them safety, care, and the chance of a better life. This winter, the charity has launched a fundraising and awareness campaign (cats.org.uk/alfie) to reach even more stray and abandoned cats in need of urgent help.

How much is that Puppy in the Window?

Remember the song? The days of pet shops and puppies in the window are thankfully almost extinct in this country. However, step forward social media and websites advertising almost anything for free, including dogs and animals of all sizes and breeds

Especially popular are the so called ‘handbag’ dogs who have been specifically overbred for the market. I wonder how many people purchasing these realise just how these puppies are bred and the conditions that they have had to live in. Sadly we live in a society of ‘’must have it now’ culture which drives sales.

Christmas is on the horizon and the advertising has been cranked up a notch. I wonder how long it will be before puppies are advertised cheaper on Black Friday or even buy one get one free when dealers get desperate?

Most rescues dread Christmas as they know their kennels will be full of unwanted dogs and they will have a waiting list of dogs needing to come in. Vets no doubt will be on the alert because some dogs undoubtedly will be taken in for an early demise when rescue space is not available. Failing this there will always be those who will take the dog out and tie it to a tree and simply abandon it.

Another trend that raises its ugly head at Christmas is ‘Out with the old and in with the new’. Our rescue has had this time and again where the old dog is no longer wanted, too much trouble and too expensive at the vets so the decision is made to buy a puppy for Christmas and start all over again. It is heartrending for all the volunteers when this happens and a lovely older dog is dumped with us on some pretext. Older dogs make wonderful companions and it just breaks our hearts when this happens.

As a responsible rescue we cease rehoming in the month of December unless there are special circumstances. Christmas in many households is busy, noisy and overwhelming for a new dog and puppies especially need to start their routine training which is near impossible in these circumstances. If we have an elderly dog and a home which we know is going to be quiet during the festive season we may well consider placing a dog there or in a suitable foster home.

A note of caution when obtaining a dog via social media or one of these free websites. Remember the dog has probably not been vetted and there is always a reason for needing to rehome it. Many lies are told in order for a person to dispose of a dog and unfortunately you may find to your cost that it was not the puppy in the window you were expecting!

Brits risk £700 vet bills as unseen winter mould makes dogs sick

As colder, wetter weather sweeps across the UK, dog expert Michael Nelson from Kennel Store is urging owners to do one quick check that could save them hundreds of pounds in vet bills, look underneath their dog’s bed before it’s too late.

With heating now back on and homes battling condensation, moisture is quietly building up under pet beds, especially those on hard or cold floors.

According to Michael, hidden damp can quickly turn into mould and bacteria, leading to a surge in skin irritation, allergies and breathing issues in dogs.

“It’s something owners rarely think about. As temperatures drop, condensation settles on cold floors overnight.”

“That moisture gets trapped under the bed, and before you know it, you’ve got a patch of mould your dog’s been lying on for weeks.”

Michael explains that the problem often goes unnoticed until pets start showing signs of discomfort.

“You might see your dog scratching more than usual, developing sore patches, or even coughing and sneezing. It’s easy to assume it’s a seasonal

allergy or dry skin, but quite often it’s damp and mould that’s to blame, and it’s sitting right under their bed.”

He warns that treating related issues can cost between £200 and £700, depending on how severe they become, and that these cases rise every winter as the weather changes.

“It happens every year. Owners notice their dogs scratching or coughing and are shocked when the culprit turns out to be mould under the bed, but it’s more common than people realise.”

“A quick two-minute check could prevent weeks of discomfort and a painful vet bill.”

As the Met Office warns of cooler temperatures and heavy rain in early November, Michael is urging dog owners to act now before the damp sets in.

“The colder weather always catches people out. We think about draughts and wet walks, but not what’s happening inside the house. When floors stay cold and air is humid, moisture has

nowhere to go, and that’s when mould thrives.”

To help owners stay one step ahead, Michael has shared his simple prevention tips:

• Lift and check dog beds weekly for damp patches or dark marks underneath.

• Wash and fully dry bedding before putting it back down.

• Use a raised or ventilated bed to improve airflow.

• Avoid placing beds directly on cold floors or against outside walls.

“It’s such an easy thing to overlook, but once mould gets in, it spreads fast. Now’s the time to check, before the winter weather does the damage.”

Dog owners warned this one festive treat could land you £500 in vets bills

As Christmas approaches, mince pies and other festive treats are appearing in homes across the UK. But what many families don’t realise is that these seemingly harmless indulgences can pose a serious risk to dogs.

Michael Nelson, canine expert at Kennel Store, the UK’s leading outdoor dog kennel provider, says: “Dogs are naturally curious, and many owners don’t realise that sweet treats like mince pies, Christmas pudding, and chocolate can be highly toxic. Eating even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, kidney problems, or worse.”

The consequences can be both devastating and expensive. According to the RSPCA, treating a dog that has eaten toxic foods like raisins or chocolate can cost between £350 and £500 in emergency veterinary care. “For many families, this is an unexpected financial blow at a time of year when budgets are already stretched.”

Signs

of

Poisoning to Watch For

Nelson explains that owners should look out for early signs of distress, including:

l Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea

l Lethargy or unusual tiredness

l Tremors or shaking

l Refusal to eat or drink

“If your dog shows any of these symptoms, contact a vet immediately. Quick action can save a pet’s life,” he stresses.

Why Mince Pies Are Dangerous

Mince pies often contain raisins, currants, and certain spices, all of which

are toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause serious illness. Nelson adds: “It’s not about being careless; dogs are curious by nature. A single stolen mince pie can land them in the emergency room overnight.”

Experts recommend storing festive treats well out of reach, using dogfriendly alternatives, and ensuring all family members know not to feed dogs human snacks. “Simple precautions can prevent heartbreak for both pets and owners.”

As festive celebrations get underway, Nelson urges all pet owners to stay vigilant. “Dogs are part of the family. Keeping them safe means enjoying Christmas without unexpected emergencies or heartbreak.”

Strawberries on Top List of Most Searched ‘Can Dogs Eat’ Foods

Online

New data has revealed the food people are most nervous about feeding their dogs.

Experts at Prestige have uncovered what people search for the most when finding out whether their four-legged friend can eat something or not.

The team analysed AhRefs data to track which terms come up the most after the search query: “can dogs eat...”.

The top food item was strawberries, with the term, “can dogs eat strawberries”, being searched an average of 24-thousand times a month over the past year.

“Can dogs eat bananas” came second with 20-thousand searches and “can dogs eat pineapple” third with 17thousand searches.

Rounding out the top 5 were apples and tomatoes in joint fourth, and blueberries in fifth.

Other surprises in the top 18 list included cheese, popcorn, bread, nuts, and butter with 11-thousand, 9.3thousand, 7.1-thousand, 6.9-thousand, and 4.4-thousand monthly searches respectively.

Chocolate sat surprisingly low on the list, at just 2.4-thousand monthly searches.

Liv Reed, from Prestige Granite who gathered the data, said: “It’s fascinating to see just how curious we are when it comes to sharing food with our dogs. Strawberries topping the list really made me smile, they’re a personal favourite in our house, and my dog is always by my side in the kitchen hoping for a taste. I often treat her to small pieces of fruit or plain cooked foods, but I’m always cautious to check what’s safe first.

“What surprised me most was how low chocolate ranked. It’s one of the bestknown toxic foods for dogs, yet it seems people are far more likely to question the safety of everyday items like cheese or bread. That really shows how much we want to include our pets in our daily lives, even at the dinner table.”

Liv’s advice: What to do if your pet eats something it shouldn’t:

Even the most careful dog owners can face a kitchen mishap.

“Accidents happen, even the most loving pet parents can find themselves in a panic,” Liv said.

“One minute your dog’s being adorable, the next they’ve nicked something off the counter. It’s okay, it happens to us all. The important thing is knowing what to do next.”

Here’s what Liv recommends if your pet’s eaten something questionable: Stay calm, act quickly. Panicking won’t help. Note what your dog ate and roughly how much.

Check reliable sources.

Look up the ingredient on trusted veterinary sites such as the PDSA or RSPCA.

Call your vet immediately. Give them the details: food, quantity, and

when it was eaten. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear.

Don’t try to make your dog sick. This can cause more harm than good unless specifically told to do so by a vet.

Keep “dog-safe” alternatives on hand. Fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and apples (without seeds) make safe, tasty treats in moderation.

“I know how tempting it is to give a little bit of what you’re eating, I do it too,”

Liv adds.

“But the key is moderation and making sure it’s safe. Sharing food can be a lovely bonding moment, as long as you do your homework first.”

A victory for compassion”: Puppy Smuggling Bill to become law

• Thanks to years of campaigning by Dogs Trust, the Puppy Smuggling Bill passed through Parliament today.

• The Government now has the power to prohibit the import of dogs under six months old, or those with cropped ears.

• Dogs Trust is the only charity to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome smuggled pups.

The UK’s largest dog welfare charity Dogs Trust is celebrating a better future for dogs as The Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill, also known the Puppy Smuggling Bill, passed its remaining stages in the House of Lords on Friday 21 November, thanks to years of campaigning by the charity and its supporters. The Private Members Bill, sponsored by Winchester MP and vet Danny Chambers, which will now gain Royal Assent, where it will be signed into law by His Majesty The King, has given the Government powers to:

• Raise the minimum import age for puppies to six months.

• Ban the import and sale of dogs with cropped ears or docked tails.

• Introduce tougher penalties for illegal importers.

• Ban the import of heavily pregnant dogs.

Dogs Trust has been campaigning for over 10 years to tackle puppy smuggling, after raising the alarm in 2012 when changes to the Pet Travel Scheme were opening the door for puppy smugglers. This is the third attempt at tougher legislation, with two previous Bills seeking to tackle the awful trade failing to progress through Parliament. As well as campaigning for these changes to become law, Dogs Trust has helped over 3,200 illegally imported puppies to find their forever homes, through the charity’s ‘Puppy Pilot’ scheme, set up in 2014, which if sold to unsuspecting members of the public, would have made over £5 million for illegal importers. Dogs Trust is the only charity who work with the APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) to aid the interception of illegally imported puppies at the ports, by providing care and rehabilitation to the puppies while finding their forever homes.

Owen Sharp, CEO of Dogs Trust said, “This Bill is a victory for compassion and common sense and a huge milestone for animal welfare. For far too long, smugglers have put profits first, taking advantage of loopholes in the law, which is why this Bill has been at the forefront of Dogs Trust’s campaigning work for the past 11 years. The success we’ve achieved today wouldn’t have been possible without Dogs Trust’s incredible supporters, who in this time have taken over 100,000 actions such as writing to the Prime Minister or their MP to ensure that the Government tackles puppy smuggling, so I can’t thank them enough. Although we celebrate this fantastic achievement, we need to ensure that the Government exercises these new powers, so our job to prioritise dog welfare is not over yet.”

to food or water, on the 26-hour car journey to the UK. Luckily, they ended up in Dogs Trust’s care via the charity’s Puppy Pilot scheme, where they will be returned to health, and will soon find their happy place with their forever families.

Two dogs who came into Dogs Trust’s care after being seized at the border are Pip and Squeak, two Yorkshire Terriers. The tiny dogs were seized at the port of Dover in September 2025, alongside another dog, after being illegally transported to the UK at just seven weeks of age, too young to be separated from their mother, and far too young to enter the UK legally. Before being intercepted, the three dogs had endured the 1,494-mile journey from Slovakia to the UK, in a box in the back of a car. Pip and Squeak were seized on suspicion of being underage, and arrived into the UK with no paperwork, no microchips, and no rabies or tapeworm treatment. They travelled in cramped and squalid conditions, in a box with very little opportunity to stop for a toilet break and little to no access

Danny Chambers, vet and Lib Dem MP for Winchester, said: “Every year thousands of puppies are taken from their mothers far too young, smuggled by criminal gangs across Europe in the back of vans and sold in the UK for profit, with no care for their welfare. Well, no more. Thanks to the support of the Dogs Trust and other animal welfare organisations, we got the Animal Welfare Bill through the Commons, through the Lords, and now on course to become law. As a vet, knowing this Bill will have a bigger impact on animal welfare than I could possibly have achieved in a lifetime treating individual animals, demonstrates how important this legislation will prove to be.”

Beyond Rescue: UK Dog Lovers urged to help tackle Romania’s stray dog issue at it’s Heart

With new Defra import rules and a UK pet abandonment crisis highlighting the need for responsible welfare, Speranța Shelter’s prevention-led model gains urgent relevance

Aleading Romanian animal shelter is appealing to UK dog lovers to help it continue its lifechanging work supporting responsible welfare.

With stories of rising pet abandonment across the UK* placing responsible welfare firmly in the spotlight, along with new Defra regulations tightening import testing, Speranța Shelter in Bucharest is expanding its mission of rescue, rehab and re-homing strays, to add sterilisation of strays and education of children and adults to be able to tackle the stray dog issue at its source.

As the single largest source of imported rescue dogs to the UK, Romania is at a critical turning point in its dog population management and Speranța’s work offers a humane sustainable solution which aligns with growing scrutiny of animal welfare both in the UK and abroad.

“The UK has shown immense compassion for Romanian dogs, but the systemic solution lies in addressing the root of the problem here and to do that, we need your support,” said Anca Tomescu, the internationally renowned veterinary surgeon who leads Speranța Shelter.

“While UK shelters are full, simply moving dogs from one overburdened system to another isn’t the long-term answer. Our mission is to reduce the problem at its source.”

With support from global animal welfare organisation Four Paws, Speranța has grown tremendously over the last 20-plus years. However, that support has now ended and the team at Speranța are looking to the UK for help to increase its impact to help reduce the suffering of stray dogs in Romania.

Anca said: “We are very grateful to the support from Four Paws over the past 20 years. However, now that has concluded, we are appealing to UK dog lovers to help us expand our holistic solution to manage the stray dog population by attacking the root causes of the problem.

“Through our ongoing sterilisation programme, which has involved more than 100,000 dogs, we directly reduce the number of dogs born on the streets, while our education programme also helps to reduce the number of abandoned dogs – this is the future of responsible animal welfare.”

Speranța’s model is built on core pillars that resonate with current UK challenges, including a strict noeuthanasia policy, with its on-site veterinary hospital able to provide lifelong care, from complex surgeries to behavioural rehabilitation.

Its rehoming programme, which includes Messengers of Hope to rehabilitate traumatised dogs so they can find loving homes, has helped Speranța realise a 50 per cent increase in physical adoptions within Romania over the last year.

Speranța’s pioneering remote adoption programme also allows UK doglovers to ethically adopt from a distance. A remote adoption with Speranța means ensuring a life-long sanctuary for a dog in Romania without adding to the strain on British rescue centres.

“We know how many loving homes in the UK have been provided to Romanian dogs,” said Anca.

“For those who wish to help further, our remote adoption scheme is a direct way to support a dog’s entire journey.

“For example, Levănțica has a neurological disease and can only walk with difficulty using a special aid designed for her. By ‘remotely adopting’ Levănțica you can support this affectionate, loving dog continue to enjoy her life here at Speranța.

“With every donation, you help reduce the long-term suffering of stray dogs in Romania and support adoptions in Romania. You are not just rescuing one animal; you are helping to break the cycle for thousands more Please support the home of hope for Romania’s dogs.”

UK’s Hedgehog Cup kicks off

The Hedgehog Cup will see 32 clubs from the Hedgehog Friendly Football League https://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/h edgehog-friendly-football-league/ drawn to ‘play’ each other – not to score goals on the pitch, but to score points by carrying out hedgehog-friendly actions.

The Round 1 draw took place on 24 November 2025 and was broadcast across BHPS’s social media platforms.

The clubs have been drawn at random to play against each other and now have four weeks to score points before Round 2 is drawn. There will be five rounds in total, with the Hedgehog Cup final scheduled for May 2026.

Find more information on point scoring activities and Cup Rules here https://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/ wp-content/uploads/2025/11/ How_can_we_earn_points_2025_UPDATE_V3.pdf

The Cup is an opportunity for smaller clubs to take on Premier League giants in the battle to win a piece of silverware to show they care for wildlife and the environment!

Fay Vass, Chief Executive at BHPS said: “Whilst there may not be many hedgehogs at the stadiums, there certainly will be in fans gardens and maybe at training grounds too, so it’s vital we get the message out there about being mindful of wildlife when we do maintenance or gardening. The 2024/25 Hedgehog Cup saw the Premiership’s Wolverhampton Wanderers take the cup – and we’re

really excited to see all 32 clubs get stuck in this season and encourage their Men’s, Women’s and Academy teams to all get involved in scoring points. Hedgehog numbers are in serious decline and it’s more important than ever that we stand together to help protect their welfare and habitats –supporting the Cup and the Hedgehog Friendly Football League is a brilliant way to do just that.”

The Hedgehog Friendly Football League (HFFL) is designed to spread the word about hedgehog-safe groundskeeping, getting clubs to place ‘check for hedgehogs before using’ warning stickers on all their grounds

maintenance machines, and encouraging fans to look after their own gardens and green spaces with hedgehogs in mind.

The clubs in the League have all pledged to do their bit for wildlife, climbing the league table as they hand out leaflets, feature the campaign in matchday programmes and spread the word amongst fans.

Beware of the red flags –WARNING for anyone looking to buy a pet online this Christmas

Leading animal welfare organisations warn unsuspecting prospective pet owners of the dangers of buying pets online after finding more than 400 adverts included red flags that could be associated with unscrupulous breeding and selling, or a sign that the animal was illegally smuggled into the country.

The Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG), which includes animal welfare organisations, trade associations, and veterinary bodies, including the British Veterinary Association, has set up advertising standards that some online pet marketplaces agree to follow voluntarily. Those who sign up ensure adverts for animals for sale on their site put welfare first, and help to put a stop to unscrupulous breeders who put profit above animals' health. The standards have been developed in the absence of sufficient regulation, and PAAG relies on websites voluntarily committing to uphold these standards.

Every year, the group moderates participating websites which advertise pets for sale. This year, volunteers from Dogs Trust, the Kennel Club, Cats Protection, RSPCA, Raystede, Battersea and the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association looked at adverts between 20 – 24 October 2025 and found 436 adverts which breached these standards. All participating websites make an annual declaration to commit to upholding these standards and learn from the yearly moderation to improve the welfare of animals for sale on their sites.

PAAG is now warning the public to be vigilant and know what to look out for when buying a pet online to ensure they do not unsuspectingly support unscrupulous sellers or become a victim of a scam.

The main Standards breached in 2025 were:

• The requirement for the inclusion of a recognisable photo of young animals with their mother (applying to dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas)38.36% of the total issues flagged.

• The inclusion of a clear and accurate photo of the animal being sold - 11.38% of the total issues flagged.

• Clearly listing the type of sale (e.g. commercial, private or rehoming) - 8% of the total issues flagged.

To help buyers spot an advert which could be from an unscrupulous seller, or even a scam, PAAG has the following advice:

• Consider rehoming from a reputable rescue centre, which gives an animal a second chance at finding their happy place.

• Do not use social media to adopt or buy an animal as there is little to no active moderation, putting you at risk of falling victim to unscrupulous dealers or scammers. PAAG found that 17% of all adverts moderated on social media between 28 July – 3 August were believed to be potential scams.

• If you’re looking for a puppy, ear cropping is illegal in the UK so do not buy from any adverts where breeders have performed this cruel and unnecessary procedure.

• Adverts should always include recent photographs of the animal, and any adverts for young animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas) should include at least one photograph with their mother.

• If you have any concerns about any

adverts which include the above, please report the advert to the website on which it’s advertised.

said, “It’s shocking to see that so many adverts for young animals don’t include photos with their mothers, as this could be a sign that they were smuggled into the country illegally, or have been removed from their mother far too soon.

“We urge potential pet owners to consider adopting a rescue pet, rather than buying from online adverts. If potential owners do look online to find a pet, they should take care not to be scammed into buying a pet bred in terrible conditions, which could lead to a lifetime of medical or behavioural issues - or even death from disease.

“We want to thank the participating websites for continuing to engage with us and taking steps to implement our Advertising Standards - we've seen huge progress in the standards on these sites. We no longer see as many serious animal welfare concerns, such as pregnant animals or animals being advertised for swapping.

“Most recently, we are encouraged by the introduction of further standardised fields across some of the engaged websites to ensure sellers include key information about the pet they are selling, including those specifying the sex and age of the animal. This is a positive development, and we hope to see it extended across all pet-selling platforms. However, more must be done to ensure that young animals are consistently shown with their mother, as this remains the least enforced Standard year after year.”

A Dog Called Comet: One Gentle Soul Hoping Not to Spend Another Christmas in Rescue

In a quiet corner of Jerry Green Dog Rescue waits Comet, a gentle white Lurcher whose soft eyes tell a story of love, loyalty, and heartbreak. At 13 years old, Comet is hoping his Christmas gift this year will be a loving home, and his wait will finally end.

Comet was found as a stray and rescued from the pound in December 2019, arriving at Jerry Green Dog Rescue just before Christmas. He spent that festive season in rescue before finding his happy ending a few weeks later, when he was adopted in January 2020. For the next five years, he was loved and cherished by his owner, the life every rescue dog dreams of.

But in early 2025, Comet’s world was turned upside down when his owner’s health began to decline. He returned to Jerry Green Dog Rescue in February while his owner received treatment. Everyone hoped it would be a short stay, and, for a while, it was. After several weeks apart, his owner recovered enough to welcome him home again in April 2025, bringing joy to everyone who knew their story.

Tragically, that happiness was shortlived. In September 2025, Comet was returned to the rescue for the final time after his beloved owner received a terminal diagnosis. Through no fault of his own, Comet once again found himself without the person he loved most.

Since then, this loyal boy has waited patiently for another chance. Although he was briefly reserved in early October, the match sadly fell through. Now, as winter approaches, Comet faces what could be his second Christmas in rescue, and the team at Jerry Green Dog Rescue are desperate to make sure it’s his last.

Comet recently celebrated his 13th birthday at Jerry Green Dog Rescue surrounded by staff and volunteers who adore him, but who know he deserves more than life in kennels. What Comet needs now is a peaceful, loving retirement home, somewhere to rest his paws and enjoy his golden years with

people who will love him as much as he will love them.

Comet is a calm and well-mannered companion who’s perfectly content to relax in a cosy spot while his humans go about their day. He’s happy to be left alone for up to four hours, likely to be dreaming of his new owner on the sofa. He could also share his home with kind, understanding children aged 11 and over, who will appreciate his gentle nature and enjoy quiet time with him. This handsome lad would love a secure garden where he can potter about, stretch his legs, and enjoy a good sunbathe, one of his favourite pastimes. Comet is worried by other dogs and animals and therefore would need to be the only pet in the home, so he can soak up all the love and attention for

himself in his well-deserved retirement.

Despite all the changes in his life, Comet remains gentle, affectionate, and endlessly kind. He asks for very little, just a warm bed, soft words, and a family to stay by his side.

Those who meet him say his gaze seems to ask one simple question: “Will you be the one?”

n To learn more about Comet or to offer him a home, please contact Jerr y Green Dog Rescue at contact@jerrygreendogs.org.uk or apply to adopt Comet here https://www.jerrygreendogs.org.uk/dogs/comet/

Because no dog, and especially not Comet, should spend another Christmas without a home.

Ted M Ted really is an amazing dog for someone. He is such a lovely chap and he literally will make the most amazing companion.

Find the pawfect Christmas Gift for the dog lover in your life by sponsoring Woody at Dogs Trust Shoreham

• Sponsoring a dog is a meaningful Christmas gift for the canine connoisseur in your life.

• The charity currently has 21 dogs available to sponsor, including Woody at Dogs Trust Shoreham.

• By sponsoring Woody, you are helping Dogs Trust care for the 1,500 dogs in the charity’s care at any one time.

With Christmas shopping now on the agenda for many, Dogs Trust Shoreham has the perfect gift for dog lovers –sponsoring one of the dogs currently in the charity’s care.

Dogs Trust’s Sponsor A Dog scheme is a meaningful gift for the canine connoisseur in your life. Not only will you be supporting the charity to care for thousands of dogs each year, but when you sponsor a dog you will receive a sponsorship pack including a photo certificate of your chosen dog, photo postcards, a window sticker and fridge magnet. You will also receive updates from your pooch three times a year – at Christmas, on Valentine’s Day and in the summer.

With around 1,500 dogs in a Dogs Trust rehoming centre at any one time, gifting someone a sponsor dog for just £1 per week can make a world of difference to dogs waiting to be adopted.

Currently, Dogs Trust has 21 dogs available for sponsorship. This includes Woody at Dogs Trust Shoreham.

Woody the 11-year-old Miniature Poodle x Lhasa Apso is described as being full

of character and very intelligent. Despite his age, he still has a fair amount of energy and loves to keep busy. Woody initially came to Dogs Trust on 4th September 2015, as his owners were struggling with some of his behaviours. He was quite a worried dog, and didn’t have the best start in life. Since arriving at the centre over a decade ago, he’s done lots of training and has come on leaps and bounds as a result – even learning special tricks such as ‘wave’. He is a special boy and has built a strong bond with his carers who adore him.

Michaela Wells, Manager at Dogs Trust Shoreham said: “We adore Woody and I am sure the dog lover in your life will too. By sponsoring a dog like Woody, not only are you helping your chosen sponsor dog, but you are also helping us care for the hundreds of dogs being cared for within our 21 rehoming centres. Your support helps us create a happy place for every dog - helping to fund all aspects of running our centre, from heating the kennels, providing treats and enrichment toys, training and behaviour support and any veterinary care required for our dogs.”

Each year, Dogs Trust finds homes for thousands of dogs. Most find their forever home within around six weeks, but for those that need love and support for longer, Dogs Trust is committed to caring for them and providing a happy place for them to stay for however long it takes.
