The trail The Great Ocean Walk – section by section Apollo Bay to Shelley Beach

Shelley Beach to Parker Inlet

Parker Inlet to Castle Cove

Start with an urban stroll through the seaside village of Apollo Bay. Marengo Marine Sanctuary is home to a sheltered New Zealand fur seal colony, visible from Marengo point. In warmer months bring your swimmers, while cooler months offer birds, marine life and wildflowers. Cool climate rainforest with Mountain Ash and Myrtle Beech trees are a spectacular way to end the day, and provide a remnant of what would have covered this area prior to settlement.

Rainforest walking commences just outside Apollo Bay. Old growth Myrtle Beech and Mountain Ash trees tower over wide grassy trails. View birds, wallabies and kangaroos when on the trail early. The afternoon walking includes Blanket Bay and Parker River, both lovely swimming opportunities if the weather is good. Koalas are prevalent on this part of the trail.

So many koalas! Perfect koala habitat gives way to coastal shrubs at the Cape Otway Lightstation. The sandy trail with ocean views meanders on to beautiful Aire Valley – a wetland estuary teeming with birdlife and greenery. Continue through a canopy of Melaleucas to Castle Cove; a breathtaking lookout over the Southern Ocean.

Castle Cove to Milanesia Gate

Milanesia Gate to Wreck Beach

Castle Cove to Johanna Beach often becomes our walkers’ favourite section. Scrubby eucalyptus one side, with sheer cliffs dropping to sapphire ocean the other. Then rough grass tree forests, salt flats and finally breathtaking Johanna Beach. The afternoon contrasts again with the wind rushing through grassy hills and country lane walking that is the highest point of the whole trail.

This begins the ‘Wild Side’. Dramatic changes in elevation deliver wild and remote Southern Ocean views. Secluded Milanesia Beach is a true gem, and can only be accessed by walking. Undulating goat trails lead off the beach and along the cliff edge for exclusive vistas. At remote Ryan’s Den you’ll feel on the edge of the world. Finish the day at Moonlight Head or continue to Wreck Beach.

16km* graded moderate, with 2km* of sand walking

11km or 17km* graded hard, with steep uphill climbs and stairs.

Wreck Beach to the Twelve Apostles Tide dependent, take the 300 stairs down to Wreck Beach for a glimpse of shipwreck anchors embedded in the sandstone. Otherwise, there’s a high road to Devil’s Kitchen for a bush cuppa with a stunning view. The last 7km unveil the Twelve Apostles with each step forward.
