Chalk’s first issue will cover change. For some, it’s a welcomed friend. For others, it’s a frightening idea. The cuts made by the Texas Legislature already hurt employment across the state, as administrators let teachers go in an effort to prepare for the downfall. Some argue the quality of education decreases as fine arts material is stuffed into the academic classroom to make up for the loss of specialized teachers. Within a year, End of Year testing will begin replacing TAKS testing in classrooms. White the pros and cons of this billion dollar switch are still being sorted through by top education minds, many wonder if jobs across the state could have been saved by postponing the launch date. Others feel that the improved education of students is more important than jobs. Changes – it’s often hard to predict how they will affect the students we so diligently defend. But one thing is for sure. If education isn’t a priority at any level – from legislatures to school administrators – change doesn’t do any good. Scott Dykowski Editor
