Dear Friend, Celebrate Age, our theme for 2011, calls us to look beyond our roles as caregivers to lift up the elders in our lives, to celebrate their past contributions, and recognize their ongoing impact in our communities. Culture change is just another way of saying that we need to recognize the individuality, strengths, hopes, and desires of those we serve and not just the care they may require. 2011 is the momentous year when the first of 77 million baby boomers will turn 65. In the coming years, we will need to re-envision what it means to be “old”, not only for the looming boomer wave, but for the current generation of elders that we serve today. Seniors will want to be more participants than recipients of the services we offer, and it will require a paradigm shift in our thinking and service delivery.

As many as one in five seniors have experienced financial exploitation or been targeted by persons attempting to defraud them of their hard-earned savings. There is a neurobiological basis for seniors’ increased vulnerability to investment fraud and financial exploitation: i.e. changes in the orbitofrontal cortex of the brain where executive functioning capacity is located. This and other medical illnesses, such as mild cognitive impairment and dementia, may impair seniors’ ability to make sound financial decisions. This presentation will increase health care professionals’ clinical awareness of the issue of elder investment fraud and financial exploitation and provide them with a proven screening tool and effective referral routes. It will also provide health care professionals with tips and tools for protecting their own hard-earned savings from fraudsters.

It’s easy in the world of healthy aging and “wellness” to leave out the most frail elders. Jack York and Nathan York, father and son road warriors who have spoken about the benefits of adaptive technology to audiences all over the world, will focus on how these people, regardless of any physical or cognitive disabilities, perhaps have the most to gain through technology. They will look at ways various types of adaptive technology can open up the world to the people that are the most in need of connection. Video clips and testimonials will be presented that highlight how off-the-shelf technologies available today can dramatically impact the quality of life of all older adults, particularly those with dementia. We will highlight how these technologies benefit the older adults themselves, their families and the staff delivering care. Jack founded “It’s Never 2 Late” in 1999; IN2L has connected thousands of older adults to technology since its inception (with a particular emphasis on nursing home residents). Nathan provides the perspective from a 15 year old’s viewpoint; how various types of person-centered technology are easy to use, and how they open up the door to relationships that would not be possible without it. He also provides a unique insight as to how the connections that technology has provided with older adults have altered his perspective of aging and disabilities. This presentation, geared towards non-technical individuals, provides a light and positive view of the future of aging, particularly focusing on how technology can be the ultimate tool in connecting generations. 2A: Ten Signposts of the New Normal

This session will explore the ten signposts of “The New Normal” that are permeating the delivery of aging services across America and the world. Changing economies, cultural norms and technology advances are altering the face of aging. The ten signposts of the new normal: marketing to a changed consumer; marketing new services; the evolution of the traditional nursing ‘home’ model; developing new communities with new constraints; the increasing importance of affiliations/mergers/acquisitions;

the changing face of the financing world; the importance of risk recognition; the need for social accountability; the importance of technology; and last, but definitely not least, the critical need for trust and integrity. In each case, examples and data will be presented to support the definition of these signposts. Attendees will hear how risk factors have changed in recent years and will be able to identify how and why key risks have changed for senior living providers, in particular. For example, home- and community-based services, new senior living models, resident-centered care models and technology are leading a culture of change in providing services to the aging in the U.S. This session will provide a host of examples and case studies of senior living providers across the nation seeking to grow their mission and purpose of serving the needs of aging. This presentation examines the events and situations that led to the FHA refinance of Hubbard Hill Estates. By understanding Hubbard Hill’s approach to the debt restructuring, which took into account private sector and agency funding alternatives, audience participants will be better positioned to make more educated decisions on how to most effectively evaluate a debt restructuring. The session will analyze the intricacies of the FHA financing process, how certain funding hurdles were addressed, and highlight why the funding solution ultimately made most sense for the organization. 2D: QIS – Quality Indicator Survey

CMS has begun the process of a staged implementation of a revised survey process, the Quality Indicator Survey (QIS), as a replacement for the current (Traditional) survey process. This workshop will provide an introduction to this new survey process that has been piloted in several states and will continue to roll out in states as scheduled. We will discuss the Quality of Care & Life Indicators (QCLIs), which are used to compare the facility being surveyed to national norms. 2G: Are Your Buildings Affecting Resident Health? Develop An Environmental Quality Plan.

Communities will be under increasing pressure to provide ongoing upgrades and maintenance to ensure that they are healthy and comfortable places to live and work. We spend 80 to 90% of our time indoors, therefore the indoor environmental quality of the spaces we inhabit is crucial to our overall well-being. This is especially true for the senior resident who spends greater than 90% of their time indoors

and may often have a compromised immune system. This presentation will introduce the concept of indoor environmental quality as a viable and important strategy for considering the health of residents, staff and visitors within the senior living environment. It will provide an understanding of the causes and effects of chemicals found in various building materials, operations and cleaning programs and the importance of eliminating other pollutants and toxins from within the community. Issues to be discussed will begin with an assessment of the existing buildings including the building envelope, building materials, mechanical and plumbing systems as well as acoustics and lighting. Finally, the presentation will provide insight into steps that can be taken to increase indoor environmental quality through careful specification of building materials, construction processes and operational programs by crafting a comprehensive IEQ Plan for the senior living community. The Campaign provides free, practical and evidence-based resources to support quality improvement efforts, and is committed to promoting open communication and transparency among families, residents, and nursing home staff. This session will focus on how the Campaign’s resources and tools can help nursing home staff to operationalize and monitor the quality of their culture change efforts. Each tool will be reviewed with a special focus on the staff turnover and consistent assignment tools and resources. The Campaign’s eight quality improvement goals specific to nursing homes will be discussed, and attendees will leave this session with confidence to use these free evidence-based tools. 5D: Concepts for Developing Evidence Based Documentation for Hospice/Palliative Patients

5G: Managing Nutrition, Hydration and Dining Services with Quality Indicator Survey

MOCEPT is an assessment and documentation tool that uses key categories to determine and address the spiritual condition of a patient. The presentation will address the influence the patient’s spirituality can have on the perception of the disease. This session will explain how MOCEPT benefits all members of the team in having a holistic approach to care for body, mind and spirit. The documentation tool also evaluates four other categories that interact with the spirituality of the patient: perception of the disease; the level of pain; level of energy; the experience of love. This tool is unique in that it allows assessment of current situation and can give direction for exploration of other areas that could increase greater spirituality. Studies show that greater positive spiritual coping results in better quality of life for the patient and, therefore, the family. Identifying these spiritual categories also helps patients feel a greater sense of control and empowers them when the physical changes that occur are out of their control.

This presentation will help you understand the connection between the Nutrition and Hydration regulations, the MDS 3.0 and the QIS survey process. We will discuss the stages of the QIS and the specific areas related to clinical documentation and dining services. We will discuss each of the interview tools and how they relate to dining. The Nutrition, Hydration and Feeding Tube investigative document will be reviewed.

The Samaritan Rate is for IAHSA members who are also members of the Samaritan Alliance. If you are unsure if your facility is a member, please call the IAHSA office at 317-733-2380.

The Facility Rate is for IAHSA, INALA, IHPCO and HOPE members from one facility in one location. Members may choose the special facility rate to register 1-7 individuals for the full conference. When you register more than 7 people, the rate will be $159 for each additional person over the 7th person. This special price does not apply to persons signing up for one day or individual registration. The Individual Rate is for one person from one facility and includes the daily rate or a full conference rate. Student Rates are available for individuals enrolled in a health facilities administration course. Retired Administrator Rates are also available for former IAHSA Administrators who served the long term care community for at least 15 years and are currently not employed. Continuing Education Credits

The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency has approved 10 continuing education credits for Health Facility Administrators and Residential Care Administrators for attendance at all sessions (Wednesday includes 5.25 depending on your session choices, and Thursday includes 4.75). Approval has also been requested from the Certifying Board of Dietary Managers, and the American Dietetic Association for Registered Dietitians. The Indiana Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist and Mental Health Counselors Board has approved this organization to provide Category 1 Continuing Education for LSWs. However, licensees must judge the program's relevance to their professional practice.

Name badges, meal tickets and conference packets may be picked up at the IAHSA registration desk at the conference.

Conference Special Events

This year the Spring Conference will feature special events which require pre-registration. You must pre-register for the Networking Reception, Executive Roundtable Breakfast and Closing Session Lunch. There is an additional fee to attend the Executive Roundtable Breakfast, but all other conference events are included in the price for all facility members. Exhibitors and Associate Members will be required to pay a fee for both events.

Cancellations

Cancellations received prior to May 9, 2011 will be refunded. Due to the need for reproducing handouts and having accurate meal counts, we will be enforcing a deadline to register. That date is May 9, 2011. Substitutions are always welcomed. No-shows and cancellations after May 9th will be billed.

Special Needs & Conference Attire

Persons requiring special assistance or specific menus are encouraged to note their needs on the registration form or attach a letter providing the details. We encourage casual attire for the entire conference. Don’t be caught unprepared. Everyone responds differently to climate-controlled environments and the convention center does its best to provide a comfortable climate for our event. However, sometimes it is warmer or cooler than you prefer. We hope that you will take this into consideration when preparing for this conference.

Session Handouts

Instead of the large spiral bound notebook that all attendees have received in the past, we combined all the available handouts on a CD and will be posted online. We invite all participants to download handouts prior to the conference. There will be no handouts available on-site. IAHSA will send instructions on how to download the handouts with your confirmation collateral.

Exhibitors

All exhibit personnel must register for the conference if attending any of the sessions. Two trade show meal tickets are included in the exhibitor's fee. If you wish to purchase additional tickets, please contact the IAHSA office at 317-733-2380.
