NUS National Demo 2012 – 21 November “Calling all LJMU students – join LiverpoolSU, and students from across the city, to march on November 21st against the changes to Higher Education in England. In collaboration with Liverpool Guild of Students and Liverpool Hope SU, we will be taking the students of Liverpool to the National Demo in London to say no to what the government is doing to our city and our education. “Liverpool thrives on being a student city and drastic cuts by the government are affecting our community. LiverpoolSU wants to say no to these attacks, which is why I implore you to come and join us for the National Demo in London next month. We are organising transportation for students, and tickets will cost £10 (with £5 returned to you on the day).”

Throughout the year LiverpoolSU offers students brilliant opportunities to try new activities and visit new places. Our first Give It A Go trips are taking place in October: • 6th October – Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences are going to Blackpool! One of Britain’s oldest seaside resorts; there is something for everyone in Blackpool. Thrill seekers can enjoy the Pleasure Beach and set their adrenalin pumping on the famous Pepsi Max Big One and other thrilling rides. Or you can enjoy a more sedate stroll along the sandy beaches and promenade, visiting the iconic Blackpool Tower or playing crazy golf and enjoy traditional sea side fish and chips. As darkness falls take in the dazzling magic of Blackpool’s illuminations, over 6 miles of Blackpool’s promenade.

• 13th October – Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure are going to Alton Towers! Enjoy a white knuckle day out at Alton Towers theme park, home to Europe’s first inverted roller coaster, Nemesis, the world’s first vertical drop roller coaster, the frightening Oblivion, and the world’s first free fall drop coaster TH13TEEN. An unforgettable day of thrill seeking awaits – who will be the bravest in ECL? For more information on these trips or to buy tickets visit www.liverpoolsu.com/events

Forums Our Forums are open, friendly chats where you can share your experiences and thoughts with like-minded people and tell us how you’d like your students’ union to work with you to make your time at LJMU even better. We have three forums; Better University, Better City and Better Union, which are chaired by elected student volunteers. We’d like to invite you to our first forums of the year:

30 October, venue and time to be confirmed – check www. liverpoolsu.com/betteruniversity This forum will focus on your first few weeks as a student at LJMU. Our student chair, Christina Cusack, wants to know how you have settled in to academic life at the university. How did you find the induction process? Has LJMU lived up to your expectations? Have you had any problems with facilities? Or do you love everything about university life? Good or bad, we want to hear it! The forum will also discuss the NUS National Demo, which will take place on 21 November.

23 October in the Haigh Building, Maryland Street, from 5.30pm LiverpoolSU care about the wellbeing of all of our members - in this initial forum, chair Stephen Stewart will lead a discussion on the issues surrounding student safety in and around the city. Come along and let us know how you have settled in to student life in the wider city – whether you live in halls, private accommodation or at home.

25 October in the Haigh Building, Maryland Street, 5.30-7.30pm We’d love to hear your opinions on Welcome Fest! This forum will be led by our student chair, discussing your opinions on our welcome activities. We want to know whether we provided a good range of activities and events, if you enjoyed it, was it good value for money, and how you think we could make it even bigger and better for next year!

Club/society of the month LSU Investment and Trading Society

The LSU Investment and Trading Society are one to watch this academic year. Newly formed over the summer, the society has already managed to attract high levels of support and interest amongst students and staff within the university. The group is a platform for LJMU students through which to learn and discuss the opportunities and risks in investing and trading in financial markets.

Motivated by the growing emphasis on unemployment, particularly graduate unemployment, the society caters for a niche market to help students to overcome the typical barriers they may face after competing their studies, for example; lack of work experience, financial illiteracy, lack of confidence in terms of soft skills. For more information contact the President, Alan Riddoch, at a.riddoch@2010.ljmu.ac.uk or go to their official Facebook page, LSU Investment & Trading Society.
