Creativity is to discover a question that has never been asked. If one brings up an idiosyncratic question, the answer he gives will necessarily be unique as well. - Kenya Hara

PROJECT DESCRIPTION This station responds to the urban context of Savannah, GA and sets the standards for a future development of the city. The design has been driven by a background of data and extensive research that was done based on the location of the site. The building responds naturally to its surrounding and complements the historic architecture of the city creating a transit area where people will meet for transportation, a local market, performances or their own apartments. This residential train station accentuates the importance of Forsyth Park to the culture in Savannah and attracks the visitors who make their way to the park every day. The importance of a living environment within a building is the may objective with this development.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Level 1

Level 2

The design of this minimalistic yet dynamic building consists of a concrete base structure that rises and wraps around the frame of the edifice through a series of folds and bends in the facade. This exciting shifts in the exterior not only produces an attractive look from the outside but they create just the right amount of shading on the perimeter to protect the building from the sun. As the folds rise up the tower, they produce a void within that is filled with greenery and extraordinary 360 views from above the city’s skyline.

EXCEL & EXHALE: A Retreat For Veteran Women Study of Human Centered Design Architecture Studio I Fall 2016 Professor Tammy Thompson

DESIGN STATEMENT

People who have a background of sexual abuse often undergo behavioral issues that can make life challenging. In this retreat we specialize on treating women who have suffered sexual trauma in the military. Creating an environment of empathy, kindness and trust to allow patients the necessary safety and comfort for the difficult work of addressing and overcoming the trauma. The clinic will

employ the most recent research in mental health design and treatment modalities. Each client will have personalized treatment procedures that include professionally selected integrative therapies as well classes, activities and the opportunity to develop/ learn their individual talents, strengths and abilities. This facility is meant to create self confidence, courage and pride within each patient.

LINDGREN STATION Study of Form, Space & Order Fundamentals Studio I Fall 2015 Professor Matthew Dudzik

Lindgren Station was meant to develop model-building and diagramming skills. The project introduces the formal and typological orders of architecture with emphasis on the comprehension of delineators of space as abstract entities and on the theoretical development of design concepts. A sequence of exercises guides the transformation of basic design into elementary architectural design and progresses from a single space and its adjacencies to sequences of spaces with specific functions.

VILLA TURRELL Study of Spatial Relationships & Human Response Fundamentals Studio III Spring 2016 Professor Julie Rogers Varland

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

DESIGN STATEMENT

This project studies and explores the various perceptual systems that we, as humans, use in relationship to architecture - its space and material, its measurable and immeasurable characteristics and phenomenon. The client for this dwell / live-work / exhibit project was chosen from the following: Robert Irwin, Anthony Gormley, James Turrell or Ursula von Rydingsvard. The work of these artists and how they use materials were points of departure for this exploration project.

James Turrell's work consist on a direct use of light and space to create sensorial experiences for the viewer. This design approaches this concept by applying a series of opening patterns in strategic locations of the building to allow natural light inside the building. The use of solid and glass walls allow the creation of open and closed spaces. These spaces are also controlled by the upward extent of ceilings which activate a variety of senses in the use. Also, the location of the building regarding the site and solar path orientation facilitates the creation of experiential views and connections to nature.

PERSONA

ARTIST STATEMENT

Name: James Turrell

James Turrell has worked directly with light and space in order to create art pieces that captures the viewers with the limits and wonder of human perception. Turrell's work is not about light, or a sequence of recorded lights, it is light itself. The bodily existence of light made clear through senses. "My work has no object, no image and no focus. With no object, no image and no focus, what are you looking at? You are looking at you looking. What is important to me is to create an experience of wordless thought." - James Turrell

Age: 74 Status: Married Job: Artist Location: Savannah, GA Hobbies: Reading, Studying, Creating Art Daily Routine: Design, Cooking, Read, Reflect.

SITE ANALYSIS The site for this project is located at the Old Central of Georgia Railway, which serves today as the Georgia State Railroad Museum. This is a stunning national historic landmark. In this site you will find the Round House which is the central area of the museum. Further to the west side there is a section of the site dedicated to the Savannah Children Museum, and next to it a large area of building and machinery. In the north west corner of the site you’ll find the lowest geographical point of this land which is connect by a 15 feet drop of slope coming from the central area of this land.

Distiguishing sounds make humans capable of enjoying all the agreeable charms of music and nature, as well as experiencing different sound effects in spaces such as an echo.

The various kinds of odors the humans nose can perceive convey different impressions to the mind. As Juhani Pallasmaa believes nose can remember better than eyes and understands the space deeper and sharper and realizes the difference. Touch permits differentation of the different qualities of bodies, such as heat and cold, hardness and softness, roughness and smoothness, figure, solidity, motion, and extension which all help create a great amount of possible spaces..

villa turrell

Sight is the ability of appreciating objects, in an instant of time, without change of place or situation. This allows humans to view all the agreeable variety of landscapes displayed nature and architectural spaces.
