All Things New
Spring is a time for birth and rebirth. Every deciduous tree dons a new green robe. Sleepy roots send up fresh shoots to begin their journey toward new buds and blooms. Birds build nests for their soon-to-be-hatched broods. Wellrested creatures yawn and stretch off their long winter slumbers. All now gray and lifeless will soon be full of color and life. Isn’t it wonderful how God brings intangible spiritual truths to life so we can understand them? Spring is a picture of our spiritual rebirth. Apart from Christ, we are like living things under winter’s tyranny; in a state of oblivion, barely alive and sound asleep, unaware of all the beauty around us. Under sin’s tyranny, we’re unaware of the rich life God desires for us; barely living, spiritually asleep and blind to the beauty of Christ’s sacrifice. Everything is gray and lifeless. Life lacks the luster of true meaning. Ephesians 2:1 puts it this way: “You were dead in your trespasses and sins.”
When we repent of our waywardness and submit to Christ’s lordship, we awaken from our spiritual slumber to a world full of life and color. Life becomes full and satisfied with all the spiritual riches God lavishes on us. (Ephesians 1:3-10). Even the hardships, sorrows and ugliness of our earth-bound lives are less burdensome because we know they have a divine purpose.
Speaking of new things, Jeff Sellers, who has kept us informed about our brothers and sisters suffering persecution around the globe, is moving on to new opportunities. We are deeply grateful for all he’s contributed to Today’s Christian Living over the years. While we are sad to see him go, we are excited he is obediently following where God is leading.
So, we have a new “Persecution Report” columnist. Will Morris has twenty years of journalism experience and extensive understanding of human rights violations throughout the world. He comes to us at Jeff’s recommendation. Welcome, Will!
As you watch spring unfold this season, I pray you will find renewed hope and joy each day, no matter your circumstances.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17, ESV)

Michelle Adserias, Editor
By Michelle Adserias
Mahsa Amini and her family were in Iran, on vacation, when the unthinkable happened. What should have been a pleasurable family trip became an unending nightmare. The world watched when Mahsa’s story was told — how she was arrested and beaten for wearing her hijab (head covering) improperly and how she died three days later, still in police custody, from head injuries incurred when she was beaten.
In a podcast released shortly after this event,* Dr. Hormoz Shariat, president of Iran Alive Ministries, explained how Mahsa’s death unleashed suppressed anger and frustration over the government’s callous, often violent, response to any segment of the population that dares question the Islamic regime.
Protesters took to the streets for Mahsa, as well as for farmers barely eking out an existence, underpaid teachers unable to support their families, and residents of one province that sought government assistance when they had no water. In each case, those who spoke out about serious, life-altering issues were arrested, beaten, or killed by the same governmental authorities that have drained their resources for the past 40 years.
Hope for the Oppressed
Despite the violence and oppression, or perhaps because of it, Dr. Shariat firmly believes Iran is on the verge of spiritual upheaval.
Lily Meschi, the director of partner relations for Iran Alive Ministries, agrees. “I see an opportunity for a spiritual movement and awakening among Iranians. They know what they don’t want, which is Islam, but they don’t know what they need, which is the hope and ultimate freedom that can only be found in Christ.”
The Battle for Iran
One Ministries’ Heart to Reach a Nation
Born and raised in Tehran, Iran, Lily remembers longing to draw closer to God, even as a child. She was raised in a Muslim family in an Islamic society. “I really didn’t know any other God than the god introduced to me through my family and schools in Tehran. I didn’t know anything else existed.” Her family was close-knit and content until financial struggles scattered them across the globe.
Lily was 16 years old when her father moved the family to Germany. It wasn’t long before he moved on to the United States, where there were better business opportunities. Lily and her two sisters stayed with extended family while their mother returned to Iran.
These were difficult years for Lily. “It hit me hard as a teenager, just dealing with an inferiority complex, so to speak. I felt I was deemed that foreigner kid that spoke with a heavy accent sort of thing. It really caused a lot of insecurity in me.”** She and her sisters were just beginning to learn the language, build friendships, and assimilate into German culture when her father sent for them.
It took about two years, but the whole family was finally reunited in the United States. Those early years together were anything but smooth sailing. Lily’s father had arranged a marriage between his daughter and his business partner, a man 12 years older than 19-year-old Lily. When problems between her father and her husband erupted, they spilled over into Lily’s closest relationships. Though her lawyer advised her to stay away, one crucial evening, strong family bonds made it impossible for her to refuse her mom’s invitation to come over and spend the evening with them.
God Made a Way
Despite all the chaos and conflict swirling around their lives, Lily found her parents’ home filled with laughter and joy,
TODAYSCHRISTIANLIVING.ORG 5
things her own life lacked. Her parents’ friends had come with Bibles, books, and a movie about Jesus’ life. Lily was intrigued by the story of this man she’d only known, until now, as a great prophet. That night, touched by the Holy Spirit through God’s Word, Lily proclaimed Jesus her Lord and Savior.
She didn’t completely understand what had happened, but she knew there was an immediate change. Lily went home with an inexplicable joy that transcended her difficult circumstances. She began attending church and Bible studies, finally able to draw closer to God — as she had always longed to.
Unlike many who leave the Muslim faith, Lily did not face conflict with her family. She was released from her tumultuous marriage and had support from her loved ones. “I was blessed to have my parents and my younger sister come to faith almost around the same time as I did.”
Still, language was making it difficult for Lily to clearly understand her new-found faith. She had a hard time grasping certain ideas in English. Her parents had purchased a satellite dish so they could still get news from home. While searching satellite programming one day, they happened upon the unexpected — Bible teaching in Farsi. They began tuning in to Iran Alive Ministries’ broadcast to hear God’s Word in their own language. All the barriers were stripped away and her understanding grew exponentially.
Lily, eager to gain an even deeper understanding of scripture, attended Bible school in Oklahoma. Next, she decided to move to Dallas, Texas. The very next year, Iran Alive Ministries moved to Dallas as well. Lily began working as a volunteer, cohosting a show focused on helping young adults face their challenges from a biblical perspective.
When offered a full-time position in 2020, she was initially reluctant to accept it. During the two weeks she fasted and prayed, the Lord took her to many places in the Bible where Persians were instrumental in carrying out God’s plan (e.g., Cyrus the Great, Esther, Nehemiah, and the three wise men). She knew this was where God wanted her. Lily’s background in banking and investment has been a valuable asset as she and Dr. Shariat develop strategic plans for raising awareness of and expanding their ministry to God’s glory.
Freedom in Christ
As an Iranian woman, Lily also has valuable insights and perspectives on the troubles in Iran. “Women are looked down on in Iran. As a possession, as a tool, as a way to fulfill a man’s agenda. Most Iranian women are not valued for who they are; rather they are used for what they can do to please men.”
She finds the situation heartbreaking. In fact, Lily’s longing for Iranian women to be freed from their chains is a driving force in her ministry. “Iranian women are strong, brave. ... They have been stumped down, hard-pressed, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down for many years by the means of inequality, injustice, and inhumane treatment. But when they receive their hope, value, and identity in Christ, they are fueled by the fire of the Holy Spirit. They become agents of transformation. … They are on fire for Jesus and the new life they have found in Christ.”
To that end, Iran Alive Ministries broadcasts television shows geared toward women and their unique challenges. They also have Farsi-speaking counselors available to help those who’ve experienced trauma. Many women have found healing

and restoration through the virtual training classes offered by Iran Alive Ministries.
But the ministry reaches beyond Iranian women. The brutality flowing out of this strict Islamic government has oppressed many segments of society. Lily explains, “Islam is a man-made religion of deception. It’s all about power and control.” That’s why broadcasting messages about the freedom found in Christ is so crucial. These messages are going out 24/7 to several countries where Farsi is a commonly spoken language.
Since there are no church buildings for native Iranians in Iran (Armenians and Assyrians in the country meet openly), most church activities are underground. That doesn’t mean God’s church in Iran is cowering in fear. They visit hospitals and pray for the patients. They leave tracts in mailboxes. They go out and publicly share the gospel, despite the risks. They are on fire for Christ! And the lifeline for over 2 million Iranian believers is the rich teaching and ongoing encouragement they find through Iran Alive Ministries.
According to Lily, “The Iranian government has kept its violence and cruelty in the dark for many years. It’s time for the darkness to be exposed and expelled.” Dr. Shariat, Lily, and many others who serve with this crucial ministry are bringing light to a place of spiritual darkness. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).
A spiritual battle is raging for the hearts and minds of Iran’s people. A spiritual battle is raging for the hearts and minds of people in every nation. Lily encourages us to enlist and fight confidently for God’s kingdom. “Any battles, any wars that we face, they’re not a surprise to the Lord. We know we have the victory even before it begins.”**

MORE ABOUT IRAN ALIVE MINISTRIES
then in Judea and the uttermost parts of the earth.
Iran Alive Ministries was born. They broadcast “raw, relevant, straightforward” programming focused on reaching people with God’s good news and discipling them as they grow in their relationship with Christ. The 24/7 broadcasts go out to Iran, Afghanistan, and other places where Farsi is spoken. They also provide counseling services, help new believers connect with underground churches, provide social media ministry, and offer support through a global prayer team.
Dr. Hormoz Shariat, aka “the Billy Graham of Iran,” has been ministering among Muslimborn Iranians for the last 40 years. As a believer from a Muslim background, he fully understands the difficulties and joys of following Christ in a culture that is antagonistic toward Christianity.
“I came to Christ in 1980, a year after the Islamic Revolution, through a comparative study of the Quran and the Bible. My intention was to become
a devout Muslim, but by reading the Bible, I realized Christianity is NOT an inferior religion, and Jesus is NOT just another prophet, but the Savior of the world.”
Through a chain of events, including the attacks on 9/11, Dr. Shariat’s brother was executed by the Iranian government. God used this sorrowful time to lead Dr. Shariat into a new ministry. He felt compelled to share the gospel first in his Samaria - Iran -
Iran Alive Ministries reaches an average of 6 million viewers daily through satellite television. Thousands of people are yielding their lives to Christ each year because the Word of God is faithfully taught and Christ-followers find help and healing. You can learn more about their ministry at iranalive.org

The Good News
Aman was accused of murder and brought before a judge. The man admitted his guilt, the jury found him guilty, and the judge pronounced his sentence with deep sorrow: the death penalty.
The guilty man was his own son. Despite the judge’s deep love for him, he could not dismiss the charges or avert the penalty. He must uphold the law or be a corrupt, unjust judge.
He was caught in a heart-wrenching dilemma. Then he thought of a solution. The judge stepped down, removed his robe, and exchanged places with his son. He was executed in his son’s place.
That’s what Jesus, in His grace and mercy, did for us when he died on the cross. He was not guilty but paid the penalty for our guilt; he was sinless but paid the price for our sin.
God’s forgiveness is available to anyone who will own, ask forgiveness for, and turn away from their sin (repent) and put their hope, faith, and trust in Christ alone. Only His blood, shed on the cross, can wash away the guilt of our sin so we can forever enjoy God’s forgiveness and fellowship.
The question is, will you accept God’s free gift? It’s only a sincere prayer away. If you’d like to find new life in Christ, tell God you are sorry for your past wrongs and want Him to be your Lord and Savior. He’ll send the Holy Spirit to live in you, guide you, and change you from the inside out.
“It is by grace you have been saved through faith — and this is not through yourselves, it is the gift of God — not of works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

LIVING IN WISDOM
GODLY SORROW
As I walked into the green room to meet the guest on my daily live talk show, I was shocked. He and his wife were missionaries with Youth With A Mission and they lived and ministered among the drug addicts and prostitutes in Amsterdam’s notorious red-light district. But he was not what I expected for a missionary — even a young one. He looked straight off the heavy metal rock scene, from his haircut to his attire. My first reaction was to cancel the interview, but after some intense back and forth with the show’s producer, I agreed to continue.
My first question to the guest was really more of a challenge than a question. How could he and his wife immerse themselves in such a debauched environment as the red-light district of Amsterdam and not be affected spiritually? It seemed obvious to me that he had been affected.
His answer stopped me dead in my judgmental tracks. He explained that it was a very real problem and one that they had to deal with spiritually. He told me how he and his wife had made a pact with each other. “If we ever walk down the streets of Amsterdam and don’t feel the horror of the sin around us,” he said, “we leave for two weeks to pray and fast until God restores it. Otherwise, not only would we be vulnerable to sin ourselves but we would be insensitive to the consequences of sin in the lives of the people we came to serve.”
For a moment, I couldn’t respond. My judgmental focus on his “weird and unconventional” appearance had vanished. I now saw a young man with spiritual maturity beyond his years, a young man with a genuine heart for God. I was humbled as I thought of all the times I had walked down the streets of Chicago and not felt the horror of the sin affecting the people of our city. The interview turned out to be a ministry to me as much or more than the TV audience. It was one of the more powerful interviews I’ve ever done, the memories of which I continue to carry with me after many years.
The young missionary’s understanding of the destructive nature of sin is too often missing in the Christian life. As one Puritan writer wrote, “Till sin be bitter, Christ will not be sweet.” In Romans 6:23, Paul also makes it clear “the wages of sin is death.” While physical death is certainly a result of sin, there are other forms of death that we have all experienced in one way or another — the death of
By Jerry and Shirley Rose
a relationship, a marriage, or a business. It could be the death of a career, reputation, or ministry or the loss of personal peace. The truth is that sin always causes pain and sorrow eventually. However, so often, the sorrow felt is not so much about the sin itself but rather about the pain of the consequences and the humiliation of the exposure of the sin.
Certainly, there should be sorrow over those negative impacts of sin.
However, in 2 Corinthians 7:10, Paul describes two kinds of sorrow and says that only one leads to true repentance: “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation without regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” Sorrow over sin itself is not true repentance. What Paul calls “worldly sorrow” is pain over the consequences of sin rather than the sin itself, and that kind of sorrow does not lead to repentance. It usually only leads to more sin and more pain.
Godly sorrow causes us to be aware of our sin, as well as the pain and destruction it brings to others. This is important. But even more important is sorrow over the breach of our relationship with God. Godly sorrow is knowing and regretting that we have offended and caused grief to God, who loves us more than we can comprehend and has sacrificed His Son to provide for our salvation. It is that sorrow, Paul writes, that leads to true repentance, restores our relationship with God, and frees us from regret.
Mike Riccardi, staff pastor at Grace Community Church in Sunnyvale, California, writes, “It is only those who feel the shame of their sin — who feel the offense it is to the holiness of God and mourn over it — that turn from it in genuine repentance and seek forgiveness by the grace of God. They are comforted by the God who does not despise a broken spirit and a contrite heart.”
Think about your response to sin. What kind of sorrow does it bring? Humiliation or regret that you’ve been exposed or a genuine sorrow over the grief it has caused to the heart of God? Though sin is part of our fallen nature, our highest priority should be to honor God and live a life pleasing to Him. Paul says that is the path to salvation and living a life without regrets. May God give us hearts sensitive to the destructiveness of sin and focused on pleasing Him.

The pastor called all the children up to the front for the weekly Bible story. Little Jimmy listened intently to the story of Lot. The pastor said, “The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city, but his wife looked back and was turned to salt.”
Very concerned, Jimmy asked, “What happened to the flea?”

For the first time in many years, an old man traveled from his rural town to the city to attend a movie. After buying his ticket, he stopped at the concession stand to purchase some popcorn. The World Forgot, God Remembered
By John Eads
We’re prone to forget what we don’t see every day. We forget those who live with daily violence and want. We forget those who live with daily disappointments and sorrows. God does not forget.
On Dec. 11, 2001, two Prichard narcotics cops pulled over a car carrying four men in the heart of Alabama Village. As the officers got out of their car, the suspect began backing toward them. The officers drew their weapons and fired at least 19 rounds toward the vehicle, wounding two men and killing a third. The remaining man fled on foot. All were unarmed.
About half a dozen men and women gathered in the Queens Court apartment complex to settle the score. The complex consisted of six buildings, perfectly situated for an ambush with only one narrow entrance to the parking lot and a building on either side — much like a narrow pass through a canyon.
They set to work, using dumpsters to block access to the parking circle so any vehicle that entered the drive would have to back out through the entrance. After moving the dumpsters, they reportedly fired guns, including at least one assault rifle, into the air. As afternoon turned to early evening, a woman accomplice was sent to call the police to report the location of shots fired and request help. The trap was set.
TODAYSCHRISTIANLIVING.ORG 11
The Light of the Village is a hands-on, front-line, inner-city ministry located in Pritchard, Alabama.
They readied themselves as a police cruiser turned into the parking lot. A second cruiser followed the first. Nothing happened. The officers left their cars to investigate what they concluded was a false report. Still nothing. They had just started backing their vehicles out when the shooting started. A block away from the apartment entrance, 6-year-old Kearis Bonham peered curiously out from the enclosed porch of his grandfather’s house.
Instead of returning fire, the officers retreated from the storm of bullets. Although both cruisers were riddled with bullets, amazingly, only two officers sustained minor wounds. A stray shot, however, struck Kearis in the head, killing him instantly.
“At first, we thought he was just ducking, because we always duck when there’s shooting,” his grandfather told the Mobile Register.
God Prepared the Way
The following Sunday, through Prison Fellowship Ministries, my wife, Dolores, and I delivered Angel Tree gifts to a mother and her children at Queens Court. We were aware of the police ambush days earlier. However, we felt we must deliver these specific gifts. Dolores and I were Prison Fellowship Ministries volunteers.
Professionally, I was a hospital administrator with a Mobile, Alabama, health system and Dolores served as a public school teacher. We chose early Sunday morning, knowing that most people were asleep. It would be a quick, easy in-and-out delivery to the family. It was a cold, foggy morning at Queens Court. The sun was hidden by clouds and haze. But when we arrived at 8 a.m., we found the family awaiting our arrival. Yellow police tape still surrounded the courtyard and portions of the parking lot.
We also noticed a group of men from across the complex coming toward us as we stepped out of the car.
“Do you know where you are?” The man who asked was about six feet tall and stocky. He wore a hooded jacket and looked to be in his mid-20s. Three other men his age stood with us. His confident manner suggested he was somebody important. I did not feel threatened. His stern yet quizzical expression and forthright tone suggested he was curious about us.
After explaining our purpose, the man smiled and escorted us to the children’s house. As we walked, I noticed heads peeking through windows and slightly opened doors — mostly curious children. At the door, we handed the gifts to the mother, who joyfully accepted them.
While we all stood there, I asked our escort, “What would it be like if we had a Christmas party here next week for all the kids in the complex?”

“ God didn’t forget me. He did not forget me, did He?”
Light of the Village founders, John and Dolores Eads.
The Eads with one of their mentees.
“You do know where you are, right? Black churches don’t even come in here.”
“That may be, but we can give it a try.”
He paused and looked at me for a second, then told me to take down his pager number. He said if we were crazy enough to do it, we should call the number and tell whoever answers the day and time for the party.
“I can promise you two things. One, all the kids we can find in this complex will be here waiting, and two, nothin’ crazy will happen.” He waited as we wrote the number down. Our pen was a little shaky, as were we.
As he walked away, he repeated, “Call that pager.” Then he turned around and said, “But I know you won’t do it.”
The Good That Came From Evil
We called that pager and agreed to hold the Queens Court Christmas party on Dec. 20, 2001. We were unsure of how many children would attend, their ages, or their genders, so we brought generic gifts: art sets, basketballs, and dolls. The one thing we did know was that we did not want to run out of presents.
We arrived late in the cool, crisp afternoon. Several adults helped us gather and control the children, roughly 30 in all, as we sang Christmas carols and told the Christmas story. An hour later, as the sun was setting, we lit candles and sang Silent Night. The children sat quietly and sang while anxiously anticipating their gifts. The calm of this moment contrasted sharply to the automatic gunfire resounding through these apartments a short time ago, claiming a child who would have been sitting amongst his friends.
The children lined up and the gifts were handed out. Most ran straight to their apartment with their gift in hand. One child turned around and said, “Merry Christmas, y’all!”
One month into the new year, we began going to Queens Court at least once a month. We arrived and picked up trash. Then we played games, served pizza or hot dogs to the gathered children, and held a Bible study in the courtyard.
One older lady, Shandra, had come to the Christmas party. She became a regular at the monthly Bible studies. We were curious when she did not show up at our Easter party, when we distributed Easter baskets. As we left the complex, we saw Shandra walking down an alley.
“Where the hell is my f-----g basket?” she demanded. She looked tired, disoriented, as well as furious. All of our baskets had been distributed.
“Ms. Shandra, your basket is not like the children’s baskets. It’s special and just for you. I’ll deliver it before Easter.” She calmed down, muttered to herself, and walked away.
Later that week, Dolores prepared a basket that was twice as big as the others. She included special items an older lady would treasure — bath and body items, chocolates, and other treats. I drove it to Queens Court during my lunch hour. Two older men sat outside her apartment drinking some Wild Irish Rose as I drove up.
“Is Ms. Shandra in? I have her Easter basket.”
“She’s in there, go ahead in,” one of the men barked. The other man smiled and nodded his head. I knocked even though her door was open. I knew from experience never to walk into an empty room.
A voice came from the dark hall: “Who that?”
“Ms. Shandra, I have your Easter basket.”
“What?” she snapped as she slowly came down the hall. She wore a bathrobe and looked tired. As she got closer, her eyes focused on the Easter basket. “Is that mine?” she whispered. She sat down, her eyes fixed on the gift. “Can I ... can I hold it?” she asked in a cracking voice.
“Yes ma’am, it is yours.”
“God didn’t forget me.” She held the basket as if it were fragile. “He did not forget me, did He?” She began to cry. “I don’t wanna open it. Is that okay? Can you put it on the shelf for me, Mr. John?”
I carefully took the basket and placed it on the shelf. She gave me a weak hug and said goodbye but never took her eyes off the basket. Of course, I could have said something or offered a word of prayer, but I knew there was nothing to say that would add to this moment.
That afternoon, a $15 Easter basket became a timely touch from God.

Tattoos Question: What are the health risks of getting a tattoo?
Answer: Tattoos are more common than ever, and the physical risks are, in general, low. In most but not all states, tattoo parlors are regulated and safe. It is essential to seek professional, licensed artists who maintain a safe, sterilized environment while tattooing. The artist should wear gloves throughout the process; use new needles from a separate, sterilized packet; and use new ink and containers. Even in the best hands, however, skin infections, scarring, allergic reactions, and chronic skin irritation are all possible risks. The saddest side effect is the mental risk of regret. I’ve seen many patients who wish they had thought twice before getting a tattoo. Some point to Leviticus 19:28, which says, “‘Do not … put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.’” Some say that since this is Levitical Law, it doesn’t apply to Christians. Others say this is not describing modern tattooing. Nevertheless, I’d advise not getting a tattoo without giving yourself time (weeks, months, or even years) to think and pray for wisdom (James 1:5) as you talk to trusted Christian friends and pastoral professionals. Finally, double-check your motives with someone you admire and trust.
Reverse Osmosis
Question: Is reverse osmosis water healthy?
Answer: Reverse osmosis (RO) is a technology that was originally designed to remove salt from brackish or sea water to reduce very specific chemical contaminants, such as heavy metals, by pushing water through a semipermeable membrane. RO can remove contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, nitrates, sulfates, fluoride, and arsenic, to name a few. Unfortunately, RO also removes healthy minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, and sodium. When it comes to tap water in the U.S. and Canada, RO filters are generally a waste of money and water, as RO wastes as much as six times the amount of clean water it produces. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the low-mineral drinking water produced by RO is not suitable for longterm human consumption. It creates negative health effects over time. Also, the lack of minerals leads to a negative taste for many people. For those wanting to improve the taste and reduce any risk of possible contaminants such as THMs, microplastics, and heavy metals, a high-quality activated carbon filter will do the job. These are easy to install and replace, cost considerably less, retain the healthy minerals, and won’t waste any water. An objective review of RO by Forbes can be read at tinyurl.com/5n8hrna9.
Tuna and Mercury
Question: Does all tuna really contain mercury? If so, how much tuna is safe to eat?
Answer: Fish provide protein, healthy fatty acids, and many vitamins and minerals — and lower-mercury fish are a good choice for everyone, especially for women who are or might become pregnant or are breastfeeding. They’re also a good choice for children. Though tuna is very nutritious, different types (or species) of tuna contain different amounts of mercury. The FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) put canned light tuna in their “Best Choices” category. Albacore (or white) tuna and yellowfin tuna are in their “Good Choices” category, while bigeye tuna is in their “Choices to Avoid” category. The FDA and EPA provide a chart (tinyurl.com/bd6brz89) to help you choose which fish and how much to eat or feed your child each week.

Smartwatches
Question: Are there any health risks to wearing a smartwatch or fitness band?
Answer: I suspect your concern is whether smartwatches emit harmful radiation. Wearable technology, such as smartwatches, typically uses low-powered radio-frequency (RF) transmitters to send and receive data that emit radio waves, a type of nonionizing radiation. This is a low-powered Bluetooth technology, similar to that used in hands-free headsets for cell phones and many other wireless consumer devices. Some devices may use Wi-Fi or other communication technologies as well. According to the CDC, the RF “transmitters in wearable devices operate at extremely low power levels and normally send signals in streams or brief bursts (pulses) for a short period of time. As a result, wearable devices expose the user to very small levels of RF radiation over time.” However, the CDC adds, “If you use wearable devices, it could be a source of distraction and raise safety issues unrelated to RF radiation exposure. This is a major concern if you are driving a car or participating in other activities that require close attention.”
Magnetic or Copper Bracelets
$500 million a year in the U.S. People use magnet therapy for myriad conditions. Although magnet therapy is considered possibly safe for adults, with minimal adverse effects reported in clinical studies, I am not aware of any condition where this therapy has proven effective. Furthermore, it’s been shown to be possibly ineffective in several conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, exercise-induced muscle soreness, foot pain, plantar heel pain, and postoperative pain. The Arthritis Foundation says, “Magnet therapy or wearing copper jewelry may seem attractive for easing your arthritis pain simply and inexpensively. But studies confirm these treatments are ineffective for arthritis pain. According to studies published over the years, magnetic wrist straps and copper bracelets don’t work on arthritis pain or stiffness [for] osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).” What about those coppercontaining garments or bracelets that are widely advertised and selling like crazy? Consumer Reports wrote, “These products are marketed as a way to relieve pain and improve sports endurance … The only hitch? There’s little to no reliable scientific evidence that the copper/compression combo does what manufacturers are claiming.” I do not recommend either magnet or copper therapy.

Ilived with low-level anxiety and fear all my life. It was manageable as a child and young adult. But about eight years ago, this anxiety took over my life and burned through it like a wildfire.
I was happy and healthy, living a life that anyone would be content with. I had a loving husband who had a great job working from home. I had two very healthy, active boys who loved Jesus with all their hearts. We were youth leaders at our church and involved in life groups. Life was great!
Then anxiety began to invade my life. The fear of death rapidly took over my mind, like a monster with tentacles I could not get away from.
I began to lose weight because I was afraid of eating and dying. I could not leave my house because the darkness of fear constantly invaded my mind. My heart began to palpitate all the time. I couldn’t breathe. My life was closing in on me. I was drowning.
I couldn’t be around anyone except my husband and kids. I spent nights at the hospital just to learn I’d had a panic attack. I was told to talk to my doctor about medication and counseling. Things got so dark, I contemplated taking my life. I knew I wouldn’t because I was afraid to die. There was no escape from this dungeon I was living in.
I couldn’t understand this.
I was devoted to God. I was working in the church. I was doing everything necessary to make God proud of me. To get Him to love me. I read my Bible daily. I rebuked the enemy. I prayed
fervent prayers. I quoted scriptures over and over. Where was my God? Why had He abandoned me to this monster of fear and anxiety?
I began trying even harder. Reading more, only watching Christian television, and only listening to Christian music. I tried my best to appease God for whatever I had done, or hadn’t done, to bring on this darkness. What was preventing Him from healing me?
One night, I laid in my walk-in closet crying out to God for freedom and healing. I distinctly heard Him say, “My love is enough.” He told me to rest. There was nothing I needed to do. Jesus had finished the work at the cross, and I was wearing myself out trying to get something I already had, which was His love.
This was a turning point for me. I cannot tell you everything changed at that moment. I cannot say I walked out of the closet immediately healed. However, I can say I began learning to lean into my Father’s chest and to allow Him to heal my brokenness.
One day during a panic attack, God reminded me of Isaiah 43:2, Isaiah 55:11, and Daniel 5:27. “Though you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. You will walk out unharmed and unbound, not even smelling like smoke. You will walk out better than before, and My word will not return to Me void.” I held onto these promises when the panic attacks came.
I really didn’t know how broken I was until I laid down my pride and asked for help from a counselor. At first, I thought

about how weak I must be to need someone else to help me through this. How disappointed God must be in me that I didn’t have enough faith to get over my fears.
God began to show me that asking for help was not weakness at all. Asking for help was actually a sign of strength. I’d need strength to face the brokenness counseling drew out from the dark corners of my heart. I found out I had traumas that needed God’s healing.
As I went through counseling, I began recognizing the handprint of God on my life, even from birth. God showed me that my attempts to appease Him were triggering anxiety. I was taught He was an angry God, waiting to smite me for every mistake I made. He revealed His true character as I sat with Him in the secret place and allowed Him to whisper His love to me. I slowly emerged from the darkness. The panic attacks stopped, the fear became quieter, and the voice of my Father became louder. I began to see myself through God’s eyes, not
the world’s. I learned the habit of rest. Not just physical rest but also mental, emotional, and spiritual rest.
As time went on, I saw miracle after miracle in my life. Easter Sunday was a day of resurrection for me. It was the first time I’d walked into a church in seven years! I went to get my hair cut for the first time in years. I was living life again. Not just living — thriving.
I didn’t do anything to get God to heal me. I had days I doubted He even existed. If He did, was He involved in my life at all?
2 Timothy 2:13 says, “When I am faithless, He remains faithful.” He has proven it to me. God taught me the Christian walk isn’t about what we do. It’s about what He has already done. We fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, according to Hebrews 12:2. He endured the cross because of us. We were the joy set before Him. He wanted intimacy with us. The moment Jesus died and the veil was torn was the moment fear was defeated. At that moment, Jesus knew I would be here, in this time, facing the darkness. At that moment, He made a way for me.
Do I still deal with fear? Absolutely, I am a human being living in a scary and shakable world. Perhaps the miracle isn’t never feeling fearful or anxious. Perhaps the miracle is a changed woman who quit trying to earn God’s love and found intimacy with her Father, finally crawling into His open arms and resting.

When You’re
Mad at God
By Michelle Adserias
Most of us are familiar with Job’s story. He was the guy who had it all: unstoppable faith, excellent health, a beautiful family, financial success, popularity, and respect in the community. If high school proms had existed back then, he would have been crowned king. Job 1:1 describes him as a man who was “blameless, upright, fearing God and turning from evil.”
Then, Satan suggested to God that Job only worshipped Him because the man had it all. The gauntlet was thrown, and Job’s trials began without any earthly explanation. He lost everything: his children, his servants, his home, his flocks, his
wealth, and his esteem. All he had left was his wife — who turned out not to be a ray of sunshine — his health, and his hope in the Lord.
Imagine the depth of his sorrow! Money, houses, and livestock can be replaced — but not children. Still, the material losses must have compounded his sense of deep loss.
His response? “Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped” (Job 1:20).
Job worshipped God in the midst of his mourning. That’s a hard thing to do.
Not content that Job hadn’t denied the Lord, Satan went after his health. He was in so much pain from his head-to-toe boils,
18 TODAY’S CHRISTIAN LIVING MARCH 2023
he wished he’d never been born, wanted to just die, avoided talking to God because he’d lose the argument, and questioned what God was doing. But still, he refused to heed his wife’s advice to “curse God and die” (Job 2:9).
When the Road Is Rough
We all face losses and sorrows throughout our earthly journey. A loved one dies. A marriage ends. A life-threatening diagnosis is pronounced. A respected spiritual leader fails us. In John 16:33, Jesus promises, “In this world you will have tribulations.” Some merely disrupt our lives for a short season. Others wound us to the core. They rob us of our innocence, the childlike belief that the world is safe, life is fair, and everything will be OK. They prompt us to hedge our hearts against future pain. They leave us shaking our fists in God’s face and screaming, “Why?”
Before we set Job up as some superspiritual, unattainable example, let’s keep in mind he had some rough moments along his journey. Though Job’s initial response was to grieve and worship, there’s certainly a tone of “I didn’t deserve this” in his subsequent speeches to his friends and to God.
I’m Angry With God; Now What?
In his new book, Angry with God, Brad Hambrick offers comforting insights for those who are just plain mad at God for the painful turns their lives have taken.
Being angry with God can be unsettling for those who love Him. It feels like disloyalty. We condemn ourselves for questioning our Heavenly Father. We feel guilty for being mad at our Savior and Lord, who sacrificed His own Son on our behalf. How can we be angry at our Creator? After all, don’t we believe “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28)?
Here’s the good news: God does not always find our anger unsettling. He created us with the built-in emotional capacity to get riled up about things. He wired us to go through an “angry phase” when we are grieving the loss of someone or something we hold dear. Even though it’s difficult, it’s important to work through that anger.
But Brad points out an important distinction to help us understand what it means to “be angry and sin not.”
There are two kinds of anger. Selfish anger has “self” at the root. This is the type of anger we’re supposed to refrain from (Psalm 37:8), be slow to stir up (James 1:19), and not let the sun set on (Ephesians 4:26). Sometimes we’re mad because we didn’t get what we wanted. Things didn’t turn out the way we planned. God took away someone or something dear to us. So, we face off with God and butt heads. This anger says, “I want what I want bad enough that I’m willing to sin against God to get it.” We’re angry at God.
Selfish anger stems from viewing God as the adversary, an opponent in a competition. In the end, someone will win and someone will lose. We don’t like to lose — and we understand God always wins. This type of anger calls for humble repentance. God always orchestrates our lives for our gain and to
His glory, though it may not seem like it when we’re suffering. People have walked away from God because of unresolved selfish anger.
But there’s a second kind of anger: grief anger. Grief anger has a sense of injustice at the root. Sometimes we’re mad because life isn’t fair. We’re disillusioned by the inequity of it all. Some people seem to skate through life, virtually unscathed by tragedy and loss. Others suffer more than their share. We grieve our personal losses, but we also grieve the hurts inflicted on others by this fallen world we live in.
Grief anger stems from viewing God as our advocate rather than our adversary. Instead of sparring with God, we walk side by side with Him, conversing and reasoning together until we’ve worked through our anger. We look to Him for comfort, strength, and a place of refuge. We’re angry with God. Working through the grief anger phase isn’t sinful, so it requires comfort rather than repentance.
Free Indeed
It’s freeing to know we don’t have to carry the added burden of guilt on our journey to healing. It’s also freeing to know our Good Shepherd is willing to bear our burden if we’re willing to cast it on Him. But how do we even begin to find healing when our world has crumbled?
Our natural response is to look for answers. How could God do this to me? Why did (fill in the blank) have to die? Why did I have to get cancer? We ask everyone and anyone we believe might have some special insight into the situation. Sadly, pain is not a riddle. There are no satisfactory answers. Approaching pain as something that can be solved, rather than eased, paves the way for getting stuck in grief and anger.
Let’s go back to Job. Job searched his own heart and concluded he’d done nothing to warrant God’s wrath. Though he never actively solicited input from his friends, they were willing to offer it. It wasn’t the least bit helpful. It only heaped sorrow on sorrow, pain on pain. And when Job asked God why, God reminded Job that He is the sovereign, just, and mighty God who acts outside the realm of human understanding, for our good and to His glory.
We will leave this earth with many unanswered questions. “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part but then I will know fully, just as I also have been fully known” (1 Corinthians 13:12). But while we’re here, Brad encourages us to find the faith and courage to walk “through the valley of the shadow of death” with our Shepherd, depending fully on Him.

What Is Your Purpose?
By Aaron Tredway Excerpt from: Don’t Miss Your Life (The Secret to Significance)
Why are you here? Wherever you are. It’s one of the most important questions you can answer. It’s also the solution to missing your life.
What is your purpose? Let’s do a fill in the blank exercise. Ready?
The purpose of my life is:
I hope you participated. Even Paul, the apostle, completed this exercise while sitting in a Roman jail cell. Paul was chained to two guards. His daily routine consisted of a light morning beating; mocking, ridicule, and demoralization in the afternoon; and, of course, several lashings with cat-o’nine-tails each night. The guards affectionately called it the cat — it was their favorite form of torture. The situation seems less than ideal, but here’s what Paul writes from prison: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21) Say what you will, but Paul knew his purpose. Paul believed in his purpose. Paul was committed to his purpose. Are you? Or maybe you just talk a good game.
If Paul wasn’t so busy being tortured, or writing large parts of the New Testament, he might have written a book like this one. At least, I’d like to think so. If he did, I think Paul would have presented the question of purpose like this:
For me to live is: . Let me throw out a few suggestions that might apply — money, family, friends, fame, career, hobbies, acceptance, approval, a vacation in the Bahamas? What is it for you? What is your purpose? This question is critical, because how you fill in the blank will determine your focus. And your focus will determine your target. And your target will determine your significance. And your significance … it will determine your fullness of life.
But here’s a challenge: most Americans prioritize happiness over everything else.
According to a recent survey, the majority of Americans, sixty-nine percent, say they find their greatest happiness (and meaning) through family. Thirty-four percent of Americans say they find their happiness (and meaning) through career. Twenty-three percent cite money. Nineteen percent cite things like faith, friends, and hobbies. Health also makes the list, as sixteen percent of Americans say that good health is an important part of the happiness (and meaning) they find in life.*
So, statistically, you want to be happy. I get it. I feel the same. I want to be happy. I want to have a meaningful career, make money, have friends, enjoy hobbies … I want it all … in abundance. It’s why I’m so consumed by the offer Jesus makes. “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)
Life to the full.
It’s why Jesus came to earth. It’s why Jesus died. Have you ever thought about this?
Jesus’ purpose was to offer life to all who would receive it. Jesus called himself the bread of life (John 6:35). Jesus called himself “the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6) Speaking to a woman about her dead brother, Jesus shortened his title. Here’s what he says: “I am … life.” (John 11:25) It’s why Jesus came. It’s why Jesus died. To offer life. But maybe we confuse happiness with life sometimes? Maybe we think happiness is life? Maybe we make happiness our target?
I’ll say it straight: Happiness is good, but it’s a bad target for life.
Happiness is fickle.
Happiness fluctuates.
Happiness is found in what’s happening around you.
It’s the problem of making happiness the goal: happiness depends on happenings.
C.S. Lewis once said something about this. He said, “Don’t let your happiness depend on something you may lose.”

Q: What is the chief end of man? A: To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
You win the lottery — you’re happy. The dog dies — you’re not. You got a promotion — happy. Untimely diagnosis — you’re not. You’re recognized at work — happy. Your kid flunks out of school — you guessed it; happy you are not. But Jesus came and died to offer a new purpose, one that fields fixed results.
Have you read the Westminster Shorter Catechism lately?
If you’re Presbyterian, maybe? If you’re Anglican, there’s an even better chance. But 375 years after its publication, some of us have missed something important found in these 107 questions. Here’s question number one:
What is the chief end of man?
It’s really the question of purpose. It just sounds better.
Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky addressed this question of purpose in his book The Brothers Karamazov. It’s 880 pages long, so I’ll just tell you what he says: The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.
Dostoyevsky’s characters believed that without a concrete idea of what he was living for, man would refuse to live. It feels
extreme to me. But here’s a small portion of the full dialogue between Dostoyevsky’s imaginative character, The Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition, and this Jesus-like figure:
“Without a stable conception of the object of life, man would not consent to go on living, and would rather destroy himself than remain on earth, though he had bread in abundance. That is true. But what happened? Instead of taking men’s freedom from them, Thou didst make it greater than ever! Didst Thou forget that man prefers peace, and even death, to freedom of choice in the knowledge of good and evil?”
Author, psychologist, and Holocaust survivor Victor Frankl put it like this:
“Those who have a ‘why’ to live, can bear with almost any ‘how.’”
It’s the question of purpose.
It’s the chief end of man.
Here’s how the Westminster Shorter Catechism answered the question in 1676:
“What is the chief end of man?
To glorify God and to enjoy him forever.”
It’s why you are here.

Dad Already Made the Decision
Dear Dave,
My father-in-law passed away earlier this year. Since then, my wife and I have faced a dilemma because of the inheritance. Her dad had several life insurance policies, and he left one to her and one to each of her siblings. The one he left my wife was bigger than the ones he left to the others, and now her sister, who received the smallest settlement, is angry about the situation. She wants more, and it’s causing a real dilemma within the family. I told my wife I am okay with doing what she feels is best. What are your thoughts?
—Daniel
Dear Daniel,
So, your wife’s sister feels like she’s entitled to something their dad didn’t want her to have? The arrogance of your sister-in-law is appalling. If their dad had wanted her sister to have a different policy, he would’ve put her name on the other policy. I mean, it was his decision, not hers.
Giving someone money because you think it will enhance or save a relationship is a really bad idea. A relationship that’s purchased isn’t a real relationship — it’s prostitution. If giving this sister money is the only way she’ll act right or ever speak to you guys again, then she ain’t worth having. That’s no longer someone you should feel the need to impress, and it’s not on you guys if she decides to pitch a fit or sever the relationship.
This is a heart decision, a conscience decision. I would advise you and your wife to make it together and be in full agreement. I’m sorry you two are going through this, but the idea her sister deserves more just because she wants more? Sounds like their dad already made his feelings known on that subject.
—Dave
There’s a Process Here … and It Works!
Dear Dave,
My husband and I have a beginner emergency fund set aside, and we’re working on paying off $30,000 in credit card debt and two cars in Baby Step 2. He would also like us to start putting money aside for a couple of trips and a few other things we have always wanted. This makes me nervous, because we have made so much progress over the last year in getting control of our finances, paying off debt, and living on a budget. I understand wanting something to look forward to, but I would hate to see us slow down when we are doing so well. How do you feel about this?
—Marie
Dear Marie,
Okay, so you have two car payments hanging over your heads, plus a bunch of credit card debt, and your husband wants to throw saving for toys and vacations into the mix? I’m sure he’s a good guy, and he has obviously been onboard with your financial overhaul so far, but I wouldn’t recommend doing this.
The reason people are successful following my plan is because I teach commonsense methods, wrapped up in unbridled, scorched-earth intensity. There’s a process here. There’s an idea combined with passion. And when you plug into it full force, you’re going to move in a positive direction so quickly it’ll make your head spin.
You know how I say personal finance is 80% behavior and only 20% head knowledge? It’s true. Behaviors must change. The more dramatically they change, the better the results and the faster you progress. But if you don’t plug into it, you’ll fall back into the same old things.
It’s okay to save for a trip or buy some fun stuff in the general philosophy of life. But getting out of debt and having control of your finances should come first. Remember when you were a kid and you had to finish your dinner or clean up your room before going out to play? That’s what I teach. Work first, play later.
Trust me. It’ll pay off in the long run!

TruPlay: An Embraceable Gaming Alternative
Q&A With Brent Dusing, Founder of Truplay
When and how did you become aware of the dangers gaming and social media pose for children?
It actually dates back to when I was a kid. I listened to a lot of terrible music. I actually did realize, even then, when I was into the music, that the messages you take in affect the way you think, and the way you speak affects your outlook on life. It starts to set your value system. The awareness became even more pronounced for me as gaming and social media gained influence.
What made you passionate about offering a biblically sound gaming alternative?
I am passionate about offering a biblically sound gaming alternative because it’s rare. As a Christian parent, besides church and a few books, where can you take your kids to espouse your values?
On average, children are on their screens for 52 hours a week. So, what choices do parents have to entertain their children with anything that has close to biblical values in it?
There’s a lot wrong with our society, and children are always the victims. They’re the ones at the bottom, as these negative effects trickle down. It’s always the kids who suffer the most. Anxiety, suicide, and depression rates are at all-time highs for kids, which mirrors the rise of social media. On average, males are exposed to pornography at 11 years old. While 62% of Americans over 40 believe in God, only 33% of kids do. That is a crisis. And it all has to do with the messages and intake they’re getting on screens.
Our mission at TruPlay is to bring positive, awesome, worldclass, fun entertainment to kids right where they are, on a screen, just like Jesus met people where they were. We want them to know a real God that loves them and we want children to know they’re special. We want them to understand the Bible contains absolute truth and hope in the person of Jesus Christ. That’s the message we want to send out.
24 TODAY’S CHRISTIAN LIVING MARCH 2023
Brent Dusing, Founder of Truplay RhymVerse, above, just one game on TruPlay’s platform.
What role do parents and other adults play in safeguarding our children from these dangers?
If you’re an adult who cares about the next generation, you already feel an obligation to protect children. We should do our best for them, which is not the direction society is going today. As Christians, God has entrusted us with our children’s health, well-being, and spiritual maturity.
To do that, we need to know what our children are watching. Almost every American male under 50 years old grew up with a Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Xbox, PlayStation, or some sort of gaming console in his house, and there’s been an explosion of females entering the mobile gaming arena with games such as “FarmVille”, “Candy Crush”, and “Words with Friends.” As a result, video gaming is now part of our cultural fabric.
Gaming, to me, is no different than movies and television shows. We need to give children healthy boundaries. Some games are harmless fun and don’t necessarily have negative repercussions. Others, however, are darker and even dangerous. It can be difficult for a parent to know which is which. That’s why we believe what we do at TruPlay is so important. We want to make gaming safe and entertaining. More than that, we want to make it redemptive, as well.
What sort of games does TruPlay have available on its platform? What age groups are your games designed for?
We are launching a platform in 2023 and we will have all types of games. We are upgrading and remastering previous, strictly biblical games we built and released a few years ago in partnership with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
In “Journey of Jesus,” for example, gamers will play out the gospel. In “Journey of Moses,” gamers play through Moses’ life story. “Stained Glass” allows gamers to match colored glass pieces and create stained glass windows that open to successive screens of Bible characters telling their stories, beginning with Eve and proceeding through other key characters.
We’re also launching “RhymVerse,” an intellectual property we created based on the premise that God is real and the Bible is true. “RhymVerse” characters are animals who wear different animal costumes and have unique personalities and journeys. Some characters have strong faith, while others don’t because they’re still growing. Characters encounter real villains in the game. Each character is a kid with real-life troubles. For example, one of the characters has divorced parents, another lost a brother, yet another is adopted, and so on.
The entire suite of games in the TruPlay platform features various gameplay styles for players to choose from. Everyone who plays our games, whether an adult or child, will find characters they can relate to. When we test our games, we do so with kids, but we also have adults playing their children’s games, so we know there’s a high degree of adult interest as well. Interestingly, while a lot of kids are playing our games, we’ve seen in our data that most of our biblical game players are adults.
How do you introduce Christ to players? What about this unique approach, would you say, makes them receptive to the gospel?
We introduced some games through previous work with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Christians and nonChristians enjoyed those games, and through them, more than 25,000 people came to Christ, according to their data.
For many of our players, our games are their first exposure to anything biblical or Christian. Some of our games are straight out of the Bible. For a lot of our players, it’s their first exposure to anything biblical or Christian. In others, such as RhymVerse, the characters pray and talk about the Bible. We seek to create entertaining games that encourage both Christians and non-Christians, kids and adults, to start and deepen a conversation with God.
What experiences/training prepared you for this career?
I’ve been a tech entrepreneur for 17-18 years. I led a mobile company called Cellfire before there was an iPhone, and we succeeded. I led a gaming company called Lightside that built Christian games, predominantly on Facebook. I’ve had opportunities to build tech companies and high-quality biblical games that people want to play. I’ve learned a lot through my experiences. I believe God has prepared me for a time such as this because the mission of the calling is so big. There is purpose in making a positive, transformative impact on the next generation of kids. That is so meaningful to me.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
I would encourage people to get involved. Fans can show support by following us on social media and praying for us. Pray we will fulfill our mission to spread God’s Word.
I’d also invite people to our website at www.truplaygames. com and to enter an email so they can be updated regularly on our progress. Anyone interested can buy NFTs (non-fungible tokens, a secure way to buy online art and other assets) we’ve created. These NFTs help support our cause because we get a percentage of the revenues.
We are on Facebook, Twitter, Discord, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn, so anyone can follow or subscribe to our social media accounts. And, of course, I’d be delighted if others get excited about our mission and tell their friends what we’re doing. We want to start a movement for the positive transformation of children all around the globe, to bring God’s truth back to a dark culture and spiritually needy society.
How can parents and grandparents learn more about the games available through TruPlay?
TruPlay is coming in 2023. Check out our website at www. truplaygames.com, get on our email list, follow us on social media, and check out our videos!

Reaching Your Muslim Neighbor with the Gospel
By A.S. Ibraham [Crossway]
Muslims are coming to Christ more than ever before, so having a Christcentered foundation for evangelism is essential. However, many Christians know little about Muslims and their beliefs, which often results in misconceptions; a hindrance to clearly and effectively proclaiming the gospel.
In Reaching Your Muslim Neighbor with the Gospel , Ibrahim offers guidance for engaging and sharing the gospel with Muslims. He divides the book into two sections: 1) a Christian understanding of Islam’s strands and Muslim diversity, and 2) ways Christians can connect with Muslims and communicate the gospel. This book incorporates true stories about Muslims coming to Christ and answers common questions.
Ideal for Cross-Cultural Missions: Especially those evangelizing to Muslims or learning about their community
Perfect for Group or Personal Study: Each chapter ends with questions to prompt discussion
Practical Guidance: Includes true stories, answers to common questions, and responses to Muslim questions that will help you avoid evangelistic pitfalls.
Grace at Work: Redeeming the Grind and the Glory of Your Job
By Bryan Chapell [Crossway]
For many people, their job is merely “the daily grind” needed to provide for family or pay bills. Yet, our work is a vital means for fulfilling God’s purposes. We bear God’s image in our workplaces, experiencing His blessings and expressing His nature through our efforts, integrity, creativity, generosity, and excellence.
In this book, author and pastor Bryan Chapell shares this biblical perspective of vocation, explaining how God gives purpose to our work by making it an instrument of his grace to our own hearts, as well as a way of bringing his goodness and glory into our world. Chapell explains how we can worship God by our work, rising above drudgery, duty, or selfinterest with the understanding that our jobs are unique callings for displaying God’s character and care. Our work is worship when we see the glory beyond the grind, the mission in the mundane, and the grace at work.

Truth Changes Everything
By Dr. Jeff Myers [Baker Books]
America has passed a tipping point. The majority of Americans now say that truth is up to the individual and that ultimate truth cannot be known. Learning to “speak our own truths” was supposed to lead to dignity and harmony. Instead, our society struggles with unprecedented levels of social conflict, purposelessness, and loss of identity. And still, the “Truth versus truths” tension continues to grow.
Is all hope lost? In this inspiring book, Dr. Jeff Myers tells the fascinating stories of Jesus-followers who lived for Truth and transformed their world in times of crisis. These inspiring figures led the way in human dignity, science, art, medicine, education, politics, justice, and even the idea of meaningful work. No matter what is going on around us, the truth is worth fighting for. If you long for a positive, restorative role in our own chaotic era, it’s time to discover how truth changes everything.

God’s Plan in the Unknown
At the end of college, I was horrified as my “well-planned” future was suddenly erased. I was a few months away from getting married, excited to start a new season of life, when I discovered devastating news about my fiancé. It was clear I had to end our relationship.
I wouldn’t have the marriage I thought was coming. All of the plans and dreams we made were for nothing.
The clean slate I suddenly had for my future scared me. I prayed for God to show me what I should be doing with my life, but I felt lost and hopeless in how my life was turning out. Every day felt the same as the last. I struggled for a long time wondering why God let me be in that place. Every year on my would-be wedding anniversary, I was upset about how my life had turned out.
Several years passed, and I found myself excited about a trip I was planning to Ireland with my parents. As we researched Irish music, feeding baby lambs, and the most beautiful attractions, I was thrilled to discover Skellig Island was part of Ireland. If you have seen the recent Star Wars films, this island is Luke Skywalker’s hideout, full of porgs (fictional seabirds) and beehive huts.
I added the island to our itinerary. There were just a few problems. To get there, you had to take a tiny boat through the ocean — often causing motion sickness. If you safely got to the island, you would climb stairs that went up to the peak (standing over 600 feet high). There were no handrails to prevent you from falling off a cliff.
My parents wisely backed out. The Star Wars nerd in me realized that this was the closest opportunity I had to being in that fantastical world, so I decided to go. But when the time came to book the trip on my computer, I could not reach the site for 30 minutes due to excessive traffic. When I finally got on, every spot was gone.
A few months later, the site was suggested on my browser, so I decided to peek at the beautiful island one more time. My heart fluttered when I saw an
open spot to get to the island. It wasn’t when I had originally planned to go — we would need to rearrange our trip — but it was an open seat. I booked it, filled with excitement and nervousness at what the trip would bring.
We journeyed through Ireland and the Skellig Island day finally came. I showed up to the docks on what the locals told us was one of the smoothest days at sea they’d ever seen. I enjoyed the relaxing ride as puffins flew after us and dolphins jumped in the boat’s wake. I was pleasantly surprised the island was not nearly as scary as I’d imagined. I had to pay attention to where I was climbing up stairs to get to the top peak, but there was plenty of room. Even if I tripped, there was enough space to land without plummeting down a cliff.
As I ascended to the peak, I was blown away by the beauty of the island. The sun was shining (which is rare in Ireland), and a guide started explaining the history of the island. She described how monks used to travel to the island over 1,000 years ago to get away from all of the chaos of life and spend time with God. They would go to one of the peaks and pray facing the west (toward America), which at the time was literally the unknown. They would pray, “God, we do not know what is out there or what is ahead, but we know you are in control.”
As I heard these words, I grabbed my phone to take a picture, and my heart skipped a beat. My phone said it was May 31. That was the date I was supposed to get married four years earlier. That was the date I had dreaded every single year.
But this year, God took my worst date and turned it into one of the best days of my life. I felt like God was showing me: “Look how upset you were about how your life turned out, but see how I have used all of those things for good. I’m going to keep doing that.” And He has kept doing that. My job, my community, my dreams, and my life are now far better for me than anything I previously wanted. God took all of my hardship and turned it into a future that has exceeded my dreams.

RESOURCE GUIDE
“Christ is risen!” “He is risen indeed!”
Soon this familiar refrain will resound throughout churches worldwide, as congregations gather to celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
The anguish Jesus faced, not only in physical suffering but also in carrying the guilt of the world’s sin – a guilt that separated Christ from his Father – is beyond human imagination. The dread and confusion the disciples faced as they watched the Son of God being crucified and buried – His death apparently ending all their hopes – is understandable. The elation His followers experienced when He walked out of the tomb –evidence He had conquered sin and death once and for all – is something we can all know.
So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. — Romans 5:18

Music to God’s Ears
By Michelle Adserias
Acardinal sings with rich fervor in the nearby spruce, his red feathers flaming against the forest green backdrop. Two chickadees call cheerily to one another from their hidden treetop homes. A beakside-down nuthatch gives several nasal grunts as it busies itself with a corn kernel wedged into the tree bark.
A shy pileated woodpecker gives a trilled flyby call on its way to some solitary place. Somewhere in the distance, a hawk’s raspy cry pierces the atmosphere.
I’m thankful for the handful of birds who brave the winter: blue jays, cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, mourning doves, hawks, bald eagles, and yes — even the crows. (Whatever would we do with all the roadkill if it weren’t for our God-given cleanup crew?) I’m thankful for the color they lend the landscape. And I’m thankful they become more boisterous as spring approaches.
Most year-round birds “make a joyful noise” but don’t really sing well (which may explain why they say so little). When they do break the silence, they all glorify God in their appointed way. Their songs are always music to His ears. After all, He declared their voices good when He created them at the dawn of time.
As pleased as I am to hear the general ruckus of approaching spring, I prefer the more melodic lines. Only the cardinals and chickadees can carry a winter tune. Well, that’s not entirely true. The mourning doves have lovely voices, but I can only appreciate their funeral dirge when my mood is melancholy. In the end, whether all those bird songs please me is immaterial. It only matters that God is glorified.
Like birds, we’ve each been given a different life song. We naturally gravitate toward some life songs, drawn by a melodic tune or rhythmic style. However, if we’re perfectly honest, we find other life songs less appealing. That doesn’t matter. Each sincerely sung life song is sweet to the Savior’s ear. Together we are a choir, singing to God’s glory.
We’re prone to question, even criticize, those who sing nontraditional tunes. It’s important to remind ourselves that each believer was created for God’s glory, to bring Him joy. In Genesis, God declared everything He created “good.” God challenges us to consider this: “Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand” (Romans 14:4).
Every life song, sung by the heart wholly devoted to Him, is music to His ears — like a chorus of birds singing in the dawn.

“I had a feeling this wouldn’t work.”
One summer evening, my 3-year-old grandson was sleeping over. I did not realize I had fallen asleep until my grandson touched my face gently.
“Nannie, please stop snoring.”
I told him I was going to turn my face away from him and toward the window. This way, the snoring would not bother him.
He quickly replied, “No, Nannie, then you will wake up the baby birds outside the window.”

Ascience teacher decided to conduct an experiment to show his students the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. He took four jam jars. In jar one, he put cigarette smoke; in jar two, alcohol; in jar three, junk food; and in jar four, good clean dirt. He then put an earthworm into each jar, sealed them all, and put them in a cupboard.
At the end of the week, he took the jars out and showed them to the students, saying. “Look, the worm in the cigarette smoke is dead, the worm in the alcohol is dead, and the worm in the junk food is dead. However, the worm in the dirt is alive and well. What do we learn from this?”
One young student put up his hand and said, “If we smoke, drink alcohol, and eat junk food, we won’t get worms.”

Threats to Indonesia’s Religious Tolerance Policy
Jeff M. Sellers is founder and editor of Morning Star News morningstarnews.org, the only independent news service exclusively covering persecution of Christians. Previously he was an associate editor at Christianity Today magazine, where he wrote a regular column on persecuted Christians for five years. He worked seven years as an editor at Open Doors International and three years as a writer at World Vision. With a journalism degree from Arizona State University and a Master’s in Marketplace Theology from Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, he has also reported on persecution, economy, politics, and cultural issues for USA Today, The Globe and Mail, and other media as a journalist in Mexico City, Mexico, and Madrid, Spain.
Islamic extremism is chipping away at the tradition of religious tolerance long valued in the country with the world’s largest Muslim population.
Indonesia has a history of violence by Muslim extremist groups, but attacks are regarded as an aberration to the country’s philosophy of Pancasila, which emphasizes a democratic society of unity and social justice for all. Religious moderates are increasingly alarmed, however, by signs the influence of Muslim extremist groups is growing, as individuals and groups self-radicalize through online resources.
Churches, Christian groups, and others must be on guard against attacks by Islamist cells and individuals in Indonesia, according to Stanislaus Riyanta of the Research Center for Police Science and Terrorism Studies at the University of Indonesia. He said apparent “lone wolf” attacks are often attached to, or influenced by, Islamic extremist groups and that “a very important effort in countering terrorism is to uncover the network in order to thwart future threats.”
“The threat of terrorism is not over yet, and radicalization occurs in many ways, directly or through media such as the internet,” he recently told UCA News. “One of the characteristics of Islamic Stateaffiliated groups is that they also use women as perpetrators of terror acts, and we know that their targets are government offices and places of worship.”
Terrorism Crimes on the Rise
In 2021, authorities arrested 370 people for terrorism crimes in Indonesia, compared with 232 arrests in 2020, according to the Indonesian National Police. The main targets of these crimes have been churches.
One such attack was the suicide bombing of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Makassar, South Sulawesi, during a Palm Sunday service on March 28, 2021. The blast severely wounded at least 20 people. The married couple that carried out the attack were members of the Islamic extremist group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah, and officials found the husband had left a message expressing his desire to die as an Islamic martyr.
At a meeting of religious leaders in early October, the chairman of Indonesia’s Inter-Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB), K.H. Zainal Abidin, urged the leaders to preach “da’wah,” or “messages of kindness,” on social media channels to help counter the spread of radicalism online. “It’s time for all of us to intensify da’wah through social media,” Abidin said, with an aim to strengthen solidarity against growing intolerance and terrorist movements.
Rais Syuriah of the Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) added that radical groups continue to preach intolerance, radicalism, and terrorism through social media. “This is where the important role of religious leaders and church leaders is needed to intensify the preaching of [peaceful] messages, both online and face-to-face,” he said.
In Papua Province, where a separatist movement by the majority-Christian population has resisted Indonesia’s annexation since the 1960s, Christians continue to face hostilities on political pretexts. In the latest move to weaken area civilians, the government in 2022 passed legislation to divide it into more administrative units.
“Human rights organizations agree with the Papuans — the division will serve to accelerate Javanese Muslim colonization, militarization, and exploitation, and hasten the ‘endgame’ of Papuan genocide,” Elizabeth Kendal of the Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin writes.
How Christian Leaders Are Responding
In response to such violations, more than 100 Catholic priests have called for fair trials in cases of violence against Christians. After four Christians, accused without basis of being separatist rebels, were slaughtered by Indonesian soldiers on Aug. 22, the priests signed a five-point declaration demanding justice for violent crimes committed against Christians in the region. The Rev. Dominikus Dulione Hodo, coordinator of diocesan priests in Papua, said they concluded that most legal processes in the region lacked efficiency and transparency.
In the declaration, the priests “back all legal processes which are being carried out to reveal cases of intimidation, violence, murder, and massacre in

Timika city as well as in Nduga and Maybrat districts. We reject intervention by any party attempting to obstruct the legal processes.”
Throughout Indonesia, the battle against Islamic extremism has met some success. Indonesia’s special counterterrorism squad an-
nounced on Sept. 30 that it had killed the last remaining member of the Islamic State-linked East Indonesia Mujahideen (MIT) terrorist group. The terrorist had carried out at least 10 of the group’s executions, including the killing of four Christian farmers in May 2021.
Opposition in the City of Cilegon
Two local officials in western Indonesia recently joined Islamist organizations’ call to block construction of a Christian church, signaling government complicity in violations of religious rights.
In western Java Island’s Banten Province, Cilegon Mayor Helldy Agustian and his deputy, Sanuji Pentamarta, were among those who signed a petition to ban construction of Maranatha Church in Cilegon in September, sparking complaints of government interference in religious freedom.
“This incident harms the 1945 Constitution, which guarantees equality of every citizen to adhere to a certain religion and to worship freely in accordance to their own religions,” the Rev. Jerry Sumampow, spokesman for the Communion of Churches in Indonesia (Persekutuan Gereja-gereja di Indonesia, or PGI), said in a Sept. 9 statement.
The proposed building was to serve a Protestant Christian Batak Church (Huria Kristen Batak Protestant, or HKBP) congregation. The HKBP Maranatha congregation started 25 years ago, growing to 3,903 members from the Cilegon, Anyer, and Merak areas.
Abd Rohim Ghazali, executive director of the Jakarta-based Maarif Institute for Culture and Humanity, said in a Sept. 9 press statement that the Cilegon mayor’s and deputy’s involvement against the church violated Indonesia’s constitutional rights of religion and belief.
Rights advocates say requirements for obtaining permission to build houses of worship in Indonesia are onerous and hamper the establishment of such buildings for Christians and those of other faiths.
Indonesia’s largest political party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), has stated that it was com -

mitted to overseeing the establishment of the HKBP Maranatha Church in Cilegon.
Establishment of such a worship building would require overcoming centuries of Islamic opposition to Christianity. The province’s port city of Banten anchored the Banten Sultanate, an Islamist trading power of the 16th and mid-17th centuries. Persecution of Muslims centuries later by Dutch colonists has contributed to today’s opposition.
Such anti-Christian sentiment has been passed down from generation to generation. When Indonesia established its largest steel mill, Krakatau Steel Co., Ltd., in Cilegon in cooperation with the former Soviet Union in 1962, it was accompanied by an agreement to ban Christian houses of worship.
Cilegon has no non-Muslim house of worship, according to Wawan Wahyudin, president of the Banten-based Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Islamic State University. Official state data from 2019 recorded 382 mosques and 287 Muslim prayer rooms in Cilegon, with no record of any houses of worship of other faiths.
In a city where the population is now near 435,000, the number of Protestant Christians was recorded in 2019 as 6,740, in addition to 1,743 Catholics, 215 Hindus, and 215 Buddhists.
PRAYER POINTS:
PRAY the Holy Spirit will lead people away from Islamic extremist teaching online and elsewhere.
PRAY authorities will thwart planned terrorist attacks.
PRAY that Christians will remain resilient amid an increasingly hostile society.

More Than I Asked For
Iwas settling into life as a single mom and fostering my new relationship with Jesus. I’d had a knowledge of God since I was a little girl, but I never believed God cared about the day-today needs of my life. He was busy with big things like life and death, heaven and earth, and hurling thunderbolts at those who deserved that level of punishment.
Still living in my old mindset, I would pray but I never really believed my prayers made it to heaven. After all, I had just gotten divorced and, with my past, I was just glad Jesus wanted anything to do with me. I didn’t want to push my luck and ask God for anything.
One day, I noticed my tires were getting pretty worn. The winter had been mild, but I knew snow was on the way. I didn’t mind driving in it, but I knew the balding tires would put my daughter and me at risk. There wasn’t enough money in my bank account to buy new ones. And with the recent divorce, I wasn’t sure I would qualify for a line of credit.
When my pastor called to check on me, she could hear the discouragement in my voice.
“Tracy, why are you so down?”
“I really need new tires, and I don’t have the money.”
“Did you ask God for help?”
“No. He’s got bigger things to worry about than my tires. I should be responsible enough to buy them on my own.”
“The Bible says, ‘You have not because you ask not.’ God loves you, and He cares about all of your needs. Ask Him for help getting new tires.”
When we hung up, I felt stupid. First, because I couldn’t take care of my own needs. But it was even more embarrassing to ask the God of the universe to help me get a set of all-season tires for my car. Strangely, I felt comfort in my faulty belief my prayers didn’t make it all the way to God’s ear. Maybe this frivolous request would just vaporize before it got to Him.
“God? I feel stupid asking You for this, but I really need some new tires for my car. I am worried
about our safety. I can try working harder to make the extra money, but if You can help, just a little bit, that would be great.”
It wasn’t the most faith-filled prayer, but I let go of my pride and shame long enough to ask for help.
About 24 hours later, I received a phone call from a couple who are near and dear to my heart.
“Hey, Tracy, we want to do something special for you. We would like to buy you a new car.”
I was speechless. Tears began to well up in my eyes. In my mind, I was thinking about some older model used cars when my thoughts were interrupted.
“Do some research and select the new car you would like. We will take care of the rest.”
God tells us in His Word that He “is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us” (Ephesians 3:20). In this one phone call, He proved this truth. I asked for a new set of tires. He was faithful. He gave me a set of four brand new tires. He also happened to give me a new car to sit on top of those tires.
Reflecting on this testimony of God’s goodness, it’s important to remember it isn’t just about the physical blessings. The car I chose was beautiful. It worked out great for me and my daughter. However, the bigger gift was learning that God does hear my prayers and He cares about every aspect of my life — even my tires.
When I asked, God gave me a personal encounter with Him as my provider. When He made a way, it wasn’t just enough, it was above and beyond what I had asked. His love, joy, and peace are more valuable than any physical gift He can give. I encourage you to spend some time with God and ask!
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
