just finished writing about Dr. Helen Roseveare. She was a medical missionary to the Congo and Zaire in the mid-1900’s who established hospitals, training centers for nurses and EMTs, and regional clinics. She saw much of her work in the Congo destroyed during the civil war in 1964. She also endured brutal beatings and horrific abuse. God revealed two vitally important things to her through her gains and losses: 1. The privilege of suffering for Christ is greater than the price.

2. It must be Jesus only, not Jesus plus.

Ouch! I’m not sure which of those statements hit me the hardest.

I’ve become quite accustomed to my comfort. Should God call me to suffer for His name, would I consider the privilege of enduring pain, hardship, ridicule, or abuse more valuable than what it cost me personally? This was the attitude of the apostles in Acts 5:41.

Gary Chapman’s Enduring Legacy

t has been over 30 years since Gary Chapman wrote The 5 Love Languages® and 50 years since he started serving on staff at his church. There’s no doubt he has had a meaningful impact in the past several decades — as an author, a counselor, a pastor, and a speaker. He has written dozens of books, including the perennial bestseller The 5 Love Languages®, which has sold 20 million copies and has been translated into 50 languages. As part of his ministry, Gary has spoken at countless conferences and hosted a nationally syndicated radio program.

In light of such an impact, it would be understandable if Gary was ready to kick back and spend the rest of his days relaxing on the beach or swinging in a hammock. But at age 87, Gary isn’t dreaming of slowing down. “People ask me, ‘Why do you continue to speak and write after all these years, at your age?’ I say, ‘That’s why I’m still alive.’ I don’t have any secret except God.” Gary’s drive is fueled by the belief that God still has work for him to do. “He gives me the energy to do it. I want to spend that energy on what I’m passionate about: helping marriages.”

Gary’s passion has remained unwavering throughout his ministry. He is convinced that healthy marriages lead

to healthy families and that healthy families ultimately lead to a healthy Kingdom of God. “I don’t have a bucket list. I’ve seen everything I want to see. If pressed, I’d say, ‘I’d just like to accomplish everything God has for me.’

I don’t have any hobbies — I don’t golf, I don’t fish. I do a lot of walking, but it’s mostly in airports, traveling to speaking events.” After all these years, Gary still loves what he does. “I tell God, ‘When you’re through, I’m through.’”

Learning About Marriage . . . Close to Home

Gary has traveled the world, teaching thousands of people about healthy relationships. But his passion for this topic started much closer to home — in his own home, in fact.

“Karolyn and I had dated for two years before we got married, and shortly after the honeymoon, I came down off the high. I was bewildered. I thought, If you’ve got the real thing, it’s going to last forever. I assumed that the emotions would stay. I wish I’d known that the average life span of the in-love experience is two years.”

When Gary and Karolyn were dating, they didn’t have many disagreements. “Then, once we got married, we TODAYSCHRISTIANLIVING.ORG

started experiencing conflict, as all couples do. I knew I was right, and she knew she was right. We both felt unloved. When you feel unloved, you become your worst self.”

In retrospect, Gary recognizes that they didn’t have the tools needed to resolve conflicts without arguing. “We sometimes got really heated and said things harshly. I wish I’d known how to listen empathetically and understand Karolyn’s perspective and ask questions to clarify.”

Over the years, Gary has learned to say, “Now that I’ve heard you, I understand; that makes sense.” While they may not always agree, they understand where the other person is coming from.

Every Marriage Needs Support

GARY’S ADVICE TO COUPLES If Gary Chapman could give advice to a married couple, it would be the same, whether they’re newlyweds or they’ve been married for decades: For the rest of your life, every year, read one book on marriage together.

You can read a chapter and then say, “What can we learn from this?”

Every year for the rest of life, go to a marriage enrichment event. This could be a one-day event or a weekend retreat or a class in church.

Gary says, “There are enough good Christian books out there to keep you going for your whole marriage. If you do this, you’ll expose yourself to new ideas and growth every year. If my wife and I go to a conference and take away one idea, it’s worth it. In every book, you can find something that resonates with you as a couple.”

If you’re looking for a book this year, consider Gary’s new book, A Simple Guide for a Better Marriage, cowritten with John Hinkley. “It’s written in a simple format, covering 31 different subjects, with short chapters. In this book, I get really practical, giving the basic ideas and showing how to use them to enrich your marriage. When it comes to relationships, either we regress or we keep growing.”

Gary believes that one of the biggest challenges facing marriages is that couples haven’t been taught how to resolve conflict. It’s not so much the topic of the disagreement, but the way couples approach it.

“By nature, we argue to win the argument and try to convince the other person. The implication is ‘You’re wrong, I’m right.’”

As Gary points out, if you win an argument, that means the other person loses. “It’s no fun living with a loser! We need to shift our thinking and recognize that we’re not in competition with each other; we’re on the same team. We want to utilize our differences for the good of the relationship and the good of God’s Kingdom.” Gary is known to say to men, “Why limit yourself to your own ideas when you have a spouse who is made in the image of God who probably has other ideas?

Two minds are better than one.”

When there are unresolved conflicts that build up in a marriage, each spouse starts thinking, ‘We’re too different — this isn’t working, and they give up.’ That’s why Gary is passionate about teaching couples how to resolve conflict in healthy ways.

Gary also believes that technology can be a destructive force in marriage. “If you’re having a conversation with your spouse and they start engaging with their phone instead, you think, Well, I guess that conversation is over. People may not realize this is what they’re communicating, but they’re saying someone else is more important than their spouse.”

Seeking Something Better than Happiness

Gary believes faith plays a significant role in healthy relationships.

important aspect to it, because it protects us and our bodies and ensures that we eat and drink and sleep. But when that turns into selfishness, we start to approach marriage as a way to make us happy, and we want to bail out when we’re not happy.”

The Bible offers another perspective: “We’re called to serve each other with an attitude of humility and sacrifice. A husband is called to love his wife like Christ loved the church — so much that He gave His life for her. We need to love like Jesus: He didn’t come to be served but to serve.” According to Gary, an attitude of love says, “I want to enrich your life. I want to do whatever I can to help you become the person God wants you to be.”

Fortunately, we have help in this endeavor. “Romans 5:5 reminds us that the love of God is poured into our hearts.

We’re not limited to our own efforts or our own love; we have God’s help to love our spouse. His love pours into us, and then we can pour love into our spouse.”

Leaving a Legacy of Love

As Gary reflects on the enduring impact of The 5 Love Languages®, he is as amazed as anyone else. When asked what he attributes its longevity to, he says, “The short answer is God. The long answer is God. I could not have made that happen if I wanted to.”

As Gary talked to couples who have read the book, they tell him it has opened their eyes to how they’ve been missing each other. “They were sincere, but now they see why their efforts

weren’t connecting. They take the quiz and start speaking each other’s love language, and their love tank fills up. Then they say, ‘I wish my brother/sister/friend would read this.’”

And that’s how the book has taken off — going out by word of mouth, all over the world.

Although Gary never set out to become a bestselling author, he believes it wasn’t an accident. “I think most of us sense that God has led us to where we are. Many of the significant parts of my life were not things I imagined. I never thought counseling would be part of my ministry — it wasn’t part of my job description. And I never thought about being an author.”

All these years later, Gary is convinced that even as the world changes, marriages still need help. “I hope that the couples who have been influenced by my counseling and books and speaking will carry on what they’ve learned to the next generation and the generation after them.”

Gary’s prayer for the future of the church is that congregations would seek to do things that enrich marriages, such as providing classes, conferences, and counselors. “The central unit of culture is the family. If Christians can get it together with the family, we’ll have tremendous impact. The Good News

A

man was accused of murder and brought before a judge.

The man admitted his guilt, the jury found him guilty, and the judge pronounced his sentence with deep sorrow: the death penalty.

The guilty man was his own son.

Despite the judge’s deep love for him, he could not dismiss the charges or avert the penalty. He must uphold the law or be a corrupt, unjust judge.

He was caught in a heart-wrenching dilemma. Then he thought of a solution.

The judge stepped down, removed his robe, and exchanged places with his son.

He was executed in his son’s place.

That’s what Jesus, in His grace and mercy, did for us when he died on the cross. He was not guilty but paid the penalty for our guilt; He was sinless but paid the price for our sin.

God’s forgiveness is available to anyone who will own, ask forgiveness for, and turn away from their sin (repent) and put their hope, faith, and trust in Christ alone. Only His blood, shed on the cross, can wash away the guilt of our sin so we can forever enjoy God’s forgiveness and fellowship.

The question is, will you accept God’s free gift? It’s only a sincere prayer away.

If you’d like to find new life in Christ, tell God you are sorry for your past wrongs and want Him to be your Lord and Savior.

He’ll send the Holy Spirit to live in you, guide you, and change you from the inside out.

“It is by grace you have been saved through faith — and this is not through yourselves, it is the gift of God — not of works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

onflict. None of us relish it. Some of us avoid it like broccoli, or tuna, or whatever food we find most distasteful. But through the years, Richard Parrish has come to understand that healthy conflict, whether it’s internal or external, is a divinely-ordained gift meant to mold us to Christ’s image.

God led him to begin pastoring a church when he was just 19 years old. In hindsight, Richard feels he was probably too young, in some ways, to lead a congregation. Yet, God blessed his work and the church grew. In fact, it grew so much he approached the board about hiring a youth pastor. One of the members replied, “If we get anyone younger than you, we’ll be having children’s church.”

Unhealthy Conflict

What Now, Lord?

Richard Parrish, founder of Richard Parrish Ministries, knows the pain of unhealthy conflict. His childhood home was riddled with unconstructive strife. When household discussions got too heated, or his brothers would intentionally pick fights with him, Richard would retreat to his hiding place in an old, abandoned well. There he found the peace and solace he needed to face the world again.

Although he accepted Christ when he was a child, he had many questions about his faith, questions that weren’t always well-received. “It seemed like I was often the black sheep of my family because I would ask questions rather than just agree and move on.” Over time, Richard came to understand questioning was part of the growing process. His relationship with God was not “a one and done deal.”

It was ongoing. He was on a journey, moving from a cognitive understanding of who Christ was to a heart-level, intimate relationship with his Savior.

Are You Sure, Lord?

When Richard was 14 years old, he had what he describes as “a very unusual encounter with the Holy.” It was Richard’s “Moses” moment. He stuttered profusely and endured mocking throughout his childhood. Because of this, he was painfully shy, never wanting to be the center of attention, and always trying to blend into the crowd — until that day he encountered the Lord.

“I knew God was asking me to go into ministry; to proclaim the gospel, to teach and to instruct. I was afraid of it. I had seen so much conflict in the church, I didn’t want anything to do with it.” He wrestled with God long and hard. God certainly has this wrong, he thought. But in the end, “all my attempts to convince God were unsuccessful.”

When 15-year-old Richard spoke for the first time, at a church youth gathering, something miraculous happened. He opened his mouth to speak and God met him there. He never stuttered. God further honored Richard’s obedience by prompting 17 young people to follow Him, in response to Richard’s teaching. “I knew that this wasn’t about me. This was simply about God. It was then I said, ‘God, I will do my best to follow your lead.’”

After a number of years in the pastorate, Richard faced a series of trials, culminating in a divorce that disqualified him from the pastorate in his denomination. He was hurt, bitter and confused. He was angry with God. In his wounded state, he rebelled.

“And yet, God never took His hand off of me.” From the internal conflict a new understanding was born. There were no guarantees life would be full of comfort and ease. When all else was stripped away, Richard realized his relationship with Christ was all he really needed.

In time, God led Richard into a new ministry. He now devotes his time to supporting pastors, church leaders and individuals, helping them strengthen their relationships with Christ. Success, by the world’s standards, is immaterial. Richard teaches the most valuable thing he learned when life took an unexpected turn; a relationship with Christ is everything. But relationships with others are important, too. God uses the people in our lives to direct us and refine us.

“If you desire peace, and you have conflict, ignoring it does not encourage peace.”

Refined Through Conflict

Conflict is unavoidable. No matter how hard we try to get along perfectly with everyone, we will inevitably hurt someone or be hurt by someone — because we are flawed, sinful people. If addressed right away, the small offenses never need to become significant conflicts that end with harmful behavior to ourselves or others. Even the big offenses, the one’s that seem insurmountable, must be addressed.

“Stuffing is great in turkey but it’s not healthy for us.” When we stuff our hurt, unresolved feelings, they can become a root of bitterness that destroys us. All sweeping things under the rug does is create a big lump that will eventually trip us up.

God’s heart is for us to be reconciled, not only to Himself but to one another. If we honestly and gently address conflicts, with the end goal of healing broken relationships and restoring peace, God will use our conflicts with others to reveal His will for us, “As iron sharpens iron.” (Proverbs 27:17) He will use the temporary discord to conform us (and the person we are at odds with) to the image of His Son. Disagreements give us opportunities to understand each other better, to build a deeper bond than we had before. “Conflict is the world in which God can work. We can never get to peace without going through the road of conflict. So, do you desire peace? If you desire peace, and you have conflict, ignoring it does not encourage peace.”

Approaching a controversy from this perspective requires each party to truly listen to what the other is saying, rather than using “listening” time to formulate responses. Both parties should understand the goal is not to win a battle but to find a resolution. It also requires some prayerful self-control so we can slow down, process what’s being said, and respond rather than react. Peace, reconciliation, and understanding will not result from conflict for conflict’s sake.

External conflicts are fairly easy to recognize. But what about those wars that rage inside us; the deep struggles we face with our own insecurities, the inner unrest we feel about life’s uncertainties, the tumultuous battles between the flesh and the spirit? These are often harder to address because they are more difficult to pinpoint.

Praise God, He knows us better than we know ourselves. “That’s why I really stress the importance of being with Christ, not just in a cognitive understanding of who He is but in an intimate relationship. He knows my inward heart more than anyone. As I become comfortable with Christ, then I know He is going to reveal those hidden things in my life that He needs me to work on,” Richard said.

Richard has, over the years, struggled with feeling inadequate for the assignment God has given him. Once God helped him label it, he was able to face it when it reared its ugly head. While addressing a group of pastors in Armenia, the Holy Spirit gave him a message to pass along. Richard was fearful his words would not be wellreceived. He wanted to shut down, remain silent. Despite feeling he was inadequate for the task, he mustered his courage and obediently addressed the issue the Holy Spirit had revealed to him — and the pastors were very receptive.

We all have internal obstacles we must overcome to do God’s work; a besetting sin, a lie Satan has told us about ourselves, or uncertainty about a pressing decision. When faced with these inner battles, believers have the great privilege of bringing them before God’s throne and seeking His insights. If we truly believe Christ is leading and guiding us, we can take time to slow down and pray. We can calm ourselves before our loving Father and “create some space to be able to think with Christ, rather than just think on our own.” We can ask God questions and seek direction through prayer, through His Word, and through the wise counsel of others.

Unresolved Conflict

Many of us have unresolved conflicts keeping us from enjoying God’s perfect peace. What are the signs we’re stuffing things? We might become defensive when someone suggests there’s a problem. Or we might recognize there’s a problem but shift the blame to others. Or perhaps we might adamantly insist we are right and demand our own way, even if we’re wrong. All of these responses undermine unity and the well-being of Christ’s body.

Richard offered these words of advice for those who have a broken relationship with someone else or have an internal conflict tearing them apart: •

“Take a deep breath and realize conflict is just conflict. It’s not going to destroy you.”

• Discover the other side of the story. Get the facts before you react.

• Put your own preferences and desires aside and listen.

• Consider the validity of someone else’s viewpoint.

• Be willing to admit you are wrong. Don’t let pride stand in your way.

• Remember God is all about restoring broken relationships.

In the end, it all comes back to the greatest commandment God gave us.

He is the past president of the National Religious Broadcasters and currently serves on its board of directors. Jerry is an avid golfer, equestrian, photographer, and grandfather of 20.

Shirley Rose has been in ministry with her husband, Jerry, for more than 30 years.

Her career in Christian television focused on hosting several programs, including the Emmy Award-winning women’s program Aspiring Women. She has authored five books, including The Eve Factor, A Wise Woman Once Said…, and Significant Living, and has contributed to numerous anthologies and periodicals. She is actively pursuing her calling to help other women through writing, speaking, and hosting women’s groups in her home. ecently, as I was reading Psalms 91 in my morning devotions, I was especially drawn to the first verse.

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

Following this introduction is a score of other benefits, but to me the most significant is simply to live daily in the presence of God. It occurred to me that to live in someone’s shadow means you must stay close to him. You cannot choose your own direction, or lag behind. What an incredible privilege it is to be so close to God that we abide (or live) in His shadow.

As I considered this relationship, I remembered an experience with my earthly father. In fifth grade Tommy, the school bully, was noticeably bigger than most of us. He used his size and mean spirit to make life miserable for several boys, and I was a primary target. However, it all came to a head the day he followed me home, determined to start a fight. The last thing I wanted was to fight Tommy, mainly because I figured my chance of winning was close to zero. However, I realized that unless I stood up to him, the bullying would just go on and on. So, I determined this was the day to end it.

That may sound like a bad decision, but I had a plan. My dad was home and if I could just get there, I believed I would be okay. My dad wasn’t perfect, but I knew he loved me, and would do whatever it took to protect me. With Tommy’s taunts and efforts to knock me off my bike, every block seemed like a mile. But I finally made it to my front yard. I yelled in a loud voice I knew Dad could hear, “That’s it; I’ve had enough.” And I immediately launched a surprise attack on my nemesis.

The shock of my unexpected charge gave me first advantage, but size and experience quickly took over and I was on the verge of a good thrashing.

Then I heard it. Relief washed over me as the wonderfully strong, stern voice of my 6'3" dad called to us. “Okay, boys, stop right there. That’s enough.”

He had heard my challenge, watched from the window, and rescued me just in time. My father’s severe warning, and perhaps the surprise of my unexpected attack, did the job. It was the last time Tommy bothered me.

I still remember that day — my relief and sense of security, feeling my father’s closeness, and our

love for each other. His family came first, and he worked hard to take care of us. If I could just get close to him in that elementary school crisis, I knew he would protect me. And he did.

As I read Psalm 91, I thought if I could trust that kind of closeness in an earthly father, how much more could I trust the love of a perfect heavenly father? I suddenly had a renewed desire to live the rest of my life in the secret place of God, abiding under the shadow of the Almighty. It is the place we all need to be. The benefits there are incredible: • He will rescue us and protect us from danger.

• He will shield us with His wings and shelter us with His feathers.

• He will be with us in trouble. Yes, we will have trouble, but He will be there to lead us through it.

• He will honor us and reward us with long life.

• Most importantly, He will give us salvation.

The question is: How do we find this special place of safety and peace? How do we walk that close to God? The apostle Paul supplies the answer in Colossians 3:1-3: “Since, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” This is a call to total commitment. Unfortunately, many treat their Christianity as one among a long list of activities. Christ gets only a piece of them.

The result is spiritual anemia — a weak, unfruitful and unsatisfying Christian life, one that is far from the shadow of the Almighty. God expects more.

Matthew 22:37 says: “…You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind…

During these uncertain, tumultuous times, the peace and security that come with abiding in the shadow of Almighty God should be the passionate desire of every believer. It is our privilege and God’s expectation. 

My fiancé and I are getting married this year.

We’re both in our 40s with kids, so we’ll be a blended family. The thing that worries me is that we have drastically different views on handling money. I’m a saver, and he’s a spender. I also make significantly more money than he does. He’s been trying to get his production company in Tampa off the ground for about 10 years, making $50,000 a year. I’m an accountant, and I make $300,000 a year.

Considering the uniqueness of the situation, would it be easier for us to keep separate financial lives? I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be hard talking him into being more responsible with money at his age.

Lisa Dear Lisa, You’re going to burn a lot of calories either way, aren’t you? Either you folks are going to do the hard work of getting on the same page, or you’re going to work against each other and underperform, in your lives and your finances.

All the data we’ve collected indicates couples who win with money work together. Nearly 80% of the 10,000+ millionaires we interviewed in “The National Study of Millionaires” were married. On top of that, 80% said they were able to build wealth because they were working together financially with their spouse, instead of despite their spouse.

As far as your fiancé and his business are concerned, it doesn’t take 10 years to get a business off the ground. If you know your stuff, it takes about 10 months. So, he doesn’t really have a small business. He has a hobby. Don’t get me wrong. I admire the dude’s commitment and ambitious spirit. It may be a case of him being good at what he does but he may just need to educate himself on running a business successfully.

Along those lines, I’d recommend that he pick up a copy of “The E-Myth” by Michael E. Gerber.

It’s a great read for anyone looking to get their small business moving in the right direction.

But if that’s not the answer, he needs to find a different career. My guess is he could double what he’s making now working for someone else in the

production world in a place like Tampa.

Looking at you two on the surface, you’ve got a chance to build a beautiful life together. That’s not going to happen, though, if one or both of you are in denial about a job or your finances. The awkwardness of you making literally six times what he makes — and his business situation — needs to be discussed with a good pre-marital counselor before you two walk down the aisle.

Dear Dave, What’s your advice on asking for a raise in a delicate workplace situation? I’ve been with my company almost six years, and I make the same money as one of my co-workers, who has been with the company for an equal amount of time and holds the same title. During our tenure with the company, I have consistently taken on more responsibility and produced bigger, better results than he has. At this point I feel I have the right to complain about the situation, because I think I should be making more money than he does.

Jacob Dear Jacob, Believe me, I understand how you feel. But no, you don’t have the right to complain. You agreed on your pay when you took the job, and you should perform your duties with integrity and character. What someone else does, or in this case doesn’t do, has nothing to do with your title or personal compensation.

Now, if you honestly feel like you deserve a raise because of your effort and performance, that’s fine. It sounds like it may even be understandable, given the situation. If that’s the case, sit down with your leader and make a logical, objective and reasonable argument for why you deserve more money. I wouldn’t mention your co-worker and especially don’t bad-mouth him.

It’s not relevant. As a leader, I can tell you that’s not an attractive look on anyone. What’s relevant is the value you bring to the company. Period.

Do you hear what I’m saying, Jacob? If you think you deserve a raise, and you’ve got the

results to prove it, sit down and have a respectful conversation with your leader. Make your case. Show him or her the value you bring to the company in black and white, and explain why you feel you should get more money. I really think you’ll have a better chance of getting your work recognized and rewarded if you’ll approach things this way.

Dear Dave, My husband lost his job four months ago, and we’re close to losing our home. I’m working three jobs trying to keep our heads above water, while he’s “waiting for the right opportunity.” I understand his feelings, but at the same time I’m encouraging him to find a job like delivering pizzas to help out. Should we continue this way, or should I quit my really hard job, and just let him take responsibility?

I love my husband, and I hate the idea of losing the house, but this is driving me crazy.

Janet Dear Janet, Many guys are task-oriented, and if they’re not careful, they can start defining themselves by what they do rather than who

they are. So, when a guy, in particular, loses a job it can be a huge deal and a massive blow to his ego.

When I went broke a few decades ago, I had to re-think who I was. I’d lost my business, and in many ways, I looked at that company as who I was. My identity was suddenly gone. Lots of guys go through that very same thing with a job loss.

If he’s not willing to listen to you, I think you two need to sit down with a good, objective marriage counselor, because he’s confused as to why he works. There are two reasons we work.

One is to provide for our families. That’s our primary job. The second is to exercise our calling — the reason we were put on this planet. But you can’t accomplish the second one when you’re not doing the first one. You’ve got to provide a home and food for your family. Four months of sitting on his butt is unacceptable. I don’t want to hear about being over-qualified or a career path. Get a job and take care of your family! It can be cutting grass, shoveling snow or delivering pizza. In situations like this, you have to stand up, be a man and take care of your responsibilities.

I’m sorry if that sounds harsh, but it’s the truth. Believe me, I get it. Sometimes people go through problems, and they need a break of some kind to work through the pain. I did that when I went broke. But at the end of the day, we didn’t lose our home because I was sitting around doing nothing.

It’s time for your husband to stand up, brush himself off and make something happen!

Inspired to Lead

I

sat in a circle with my classmates in the youth room, Bible open on my lap, and gazed at the floor, hoping the Sunday School teacher wouldn’t call on me. I didn’t understand the passage we had just read. That was the old me. Who would have known a women’s conference speaker would, years later, tug at my heart and pull me out of my shell?

I grew up with felt boards, Bible stories, Vacation Bible School, and Christmas pageants, all of which provided the backdrop to my spiritual education. The Bible stories were familiar. Reading the Bible was not. Finding a particular Scripture passage seemed to take forever since I didn’t know much about the books of the Bible or where each was located.

I often failed to comprehend what I did read. Bible study felt like a chore and rarely held my attention. More than once, I nodded off trying to read the book of Acts.

Over the years I attended women’s retreats and similar events, marveling at the teaching and Bible savvy of the keynote speakers. I would return home from some events with a combination of new head knowledge and the realization that I still wasn’t very good at grasping the Bible. At other times, I’d become a bit bored with the teaching. The speakers were great! They just didn’t speak to me.

When Everything Changed

Then one year, at a Women of Faith conference, a speaker took the stage, and everything changed. Within the first several minutes of her talk, she had the entire audience laughing.

She taught with humor. What a unique and illuminating concept. I’d never heard Lisa Harper speak before and found her delivery engaging, entertaining, and right up my alley.

Having grown up in the church, I thought Bible studies had to be serious. But apparently, not in Lisa’s eyes. Her storytelling and authenticity kept me captivated, start to finish.

She also brought us to the heart of the story, Jesus. She made connections between the Bible and real life, often including both humorous and serious examples. Thanks to her teaching style, the Bible became accessible and the stories relatable to me for the first time.

Lisa Harper was gifted at translating archaic Bible concepts into modern vernacular. What she shared made sense to the modern ear. Her teaching style made God’s Word approachable. She didn’t oversimplify. Instead, she drew attention to key concepts, making it easier to comprehend and retain. Her casual manner created a welcoming atmosphere, an invitation for her audience to lean in and learn. She didn’t dumb down or patronize but spoke as if she were sharing an intimate secret straight from Jesus, specifically for us.

What a gift.

Her compassionate manner gave me the courage to learn.

Her style planted a seed that would bear fruit years later. Her presentation permitted me to be myself as I explored Bible learning.

Lasting Impact

Lisa’s influence and impact on my life continued beyond that initial conference. I gained confidence to keep working

my way through the Bible. I realized part of what had previously held me back was how I learn — and teach.

When I later led my own group, Lisa’s teaching style influenced mine. Newcomers were always welcomed and conversation included jokes or simply laughing at our shared confusion over what was on the page. This authentic camaraderie while we made our way through the Holy Book kept us going, especially as we studied the Old Testament.

As my confidence grew, I pursued new learning avenues. I joined a large women’s Bible study, drinking in the insights from other gifted teachers. I also learned from the women in my small group. At first, I mostly listened, not confident enough to speak up. I gradually joined in the conversations. I was slowly learning and growing.

While employed at a Christian bookstore, a beautiful world of resources opened up to me. New hire orientation involved training on various Bible resources and translations. It was what I wanted, needed, and didn’t realize was available. As an avid reader, I discovered the world of devotional books, how to read the Bible guides, and many other insightful study companions. After familiarizing myself with many of the resources the store carried, I discovered I loved helping people find just the right resource to make the Bible accessible for them.

In the same way Lisa made the Bible understandable and relatable for me, I discovered I enjoyed leading others on their journey into the Bible. I desired to help them gain the confidence that they, too, could read and better grasp the Bible teachings that had eluded them.

Well, not me.

Grateful

No longer getting stuck at Leviticus or nodding off while reading Acts, I led a group through the entire Bible. Most of the participants had never owned a Bible prior to joining our group. I went from looking at the floor during Sunday School to speaking in front of audiences about the Bible.

I went from not understanding what I was reading, to writing devotional articles, blog posts, and other resources on ways to engage with Scripture, how to navigate it, and find treasure within the pages.

I am forever grateful to Lisa Harper for planting the seed of possibility, showing me what accessible Bible teaching looks like, sharing a deeper connection to Jesus, instilling confidence in what I could learn and understand, and inspiring me to introduce others to the profound love of Jesus. 

Equipped to Lead

Years later, I still hadn’t read the entire Bible. Then God presented the perfect opportunity. A few friends had questions about the Bible so I suggested we read through it together; from Genesis to Revelation. During that journey, I gained confidence in leading a group through the Bible and whose teaching method did I emulate? That’s right, Lisa’s. We laughed, we learned, and we experienced the love of Jesus.

Since then, I have participated in online Bible studies by Lisa Harper. She was the one who first connected the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts for me. Simply understanding that Acts was the continuation of the story from the Gospel of Luke, changed reading the accounts of the apostles from a boring chore to an engaging discovery. But more than making a connection in Scripture, she helped me discover how I best learn and lead.

As I piloted that Bible study, God planted a seed in my heart to help others discover the accessibility of Scripture, creating short summaries of the entire Bible and a general overview of God’s Word. I started a Bible blog to help others easily navigate God’s Word. Who would have thought the

QUESTION: I have always loved my pets, but I was surprised to see a news report claiming pets could improve health of humans. Is that true?

ANSWER:

About two-thirds of U.S. households own at least one pet, with about 44% having a dog and 35% a cat. Millions of pet owners in America attest to the joy and companionship their animals provide and know how much their animal friend improves their quality of life. But did you know there are lots of other benefits of pet ownership?

The CDC reports that the bond between people and their pets can:

• Increase fitness due to increased exercise • Lower stress, perhaps in part due to increased outdoor activities

• Decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels

• Decrease feelings of loneliness • Increase opportunities for socialization Other research shows owning a dog may prolong your life and reduce your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, boost your immune system, improve your fitness, reduce obesity, and reduce stress. In older folks, dog ownership is associated with reduced social isolation and improved perception of well-being. Dog parks are becoming more prevalent, so taking your dog to the park offers opportunities for socialization, which is vital for everyone!

One study followed more than 2,500 older adults for three years and found those who regularly walked their dogs “walked faster and for longer time periods each week than others who didn’t walk regularly” and “older dog walkers also had greater mobility inside their homes than others in the study.” Another study reported that among adults who had suffered a heart attack “dog owners were significantly more likely to still be alive [one year later] than those who did not own dogs, regardless of the severity of the heart attack.”

There has been less research on cat owners, but one study concluded cat owners had a decreased risk for death due to cardiovascular disease (e.g., heart attack and stroke). The researchers suggested acquiring a cat “may represent a novel strategy for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases in high-risk individuals.” Cats offer other benefits, including lower blood pressure and heart rate, and decreased stress levels.

Another study reported cats “contribute to better psychological health.” Cat ownership is associated with improved moods, increased feelings of well-being, and, like dogs, can provide companionship, particularly for those experiencing loneliness or social isolation.

If you don’t have a pet, should you get a dog or a cat? One study comparing cat and dog owners reported, “The main finding was that owning a dog demonstrated several health-related characteristics to a higher positive degree than both non-pet and cat ownership. For example, cat owners showed higher body mass index values and higher systolic blood pressure and reported worse general health status. They also exercised to a lower degree. However, the study authors admitted that the results may have been due “to unrelated confounding factors.” However, at least one other study of older people also found that cat owners had a higher BMI, less activity, and shorter duration of activity than dog owners. The authors speculated this was because dog owners usually walk with their pets at least twice each day.

There can also be a downside to pets. The Harvard Health Letter warns: It’s not always easy caring for pets, however, and sometimes having them in the home poses health hazards for older adults. If you have problems with gait and stability and your pet can get under your feet or jump up and knock you over, then falls and broken bones are a real danger. There are also sanitary risks associated with pet ownership. Animals can carry parasites that can be transferred to humans. Animal feces carry all kinds of bacteria that can make you sick. Dogs and cats can also cause allergic reactions in some pet owners.

It’s important to note that the likelihood of catching a disease from your pet is low, particularly if precautions are taken. Nevertheless, here are some suggestions for preventing pet-related infections: • Wash your hands. Hygiene is key for preventing petrelated infections. After coming into contact with pets, their saliva, or feces, wash hands thoroughly with warm soapy water.

• Pick up and dispose of feces. Quickly disposing of your pet’s feces, particularly in areas where children play—can prevent the spread of disease to humans and other animals. Wash your hands after doing so.

• Avoid scratches and bites. Minimize the risk of infections from pet bites and scratches by avoiding them in the first place. But, if you are scratched, clean the wound immediately with warm soapy water.

• Get your pet vaccinated and evaluated. Visit a veterinarian regularly to ensure your pet is healthy and up to date with required vaccinations.

The Harvard Health Letter also advises: Before getting a pet, consider if you’re physically and mentally able to care for it. Do you have the energy, strength, and mobility to feed it, play with it, clean up after it, and, in the case of dogs, take it for twice-daily

walks? Do you have the financial means to pay for pet food and visits to the veterinarian? The average pet owner spends about $500 to $1,600 per year on each pet’s care.

If you feel you have the physical, mental, and financial means to care for a pet, take the pet’s size into consideration— not too big and not too small. Avoid puppies, which require a great deal of training, time, and energy—just like having a new baby. And consider the animal’s personality. You don’t want a dog that will bark all night or have a lot of separation anxiety if you leave the house.

Consider finding a rescue pet to adopt. Animal welfare organizations strongly advise against buying or adopting pets from pet stores. This is because pet stores often obtain their animals from puppy mills and kitten mills, which prioritize profit over the well-being of the animals. These facilities typically house animals in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions with inadequate veterinary care. In addition: • Adopting from a pet shelter or rescue organization helps reduce demand for animals from unethical breeding facilities.

• While pet store puppies and kittens are often young, shelters and rescues offer a variety of ages, breeds, and temperaments. Adopting a pet from a shelter often allows for a better understanding of the animal’s health and personality.

• Adoption fees are generally lower than the purchase price of a pet store animal and often include vaccinations and other initial care.

• Shelters and rescue organizations often provide resources and support to help with the transition of a new pet into a home.

However, as the website “Best Friends” points out, “As awareness of the connection between puppy mills and puppies sold for profit continues to grow, pet stores across the country are changing the way they do business. Instead of selling puppies who come from inhumane puppy mills, and supporting their cruel breeding practices, many stores are now partnering with local shelters and rescue groups to offer homeless pets for adoption.” They provide a list of humane pet stores in each state at tinyurl.com/54unu8ms.

As kids, many of us had pets for myriad reasons, but what we didn’t realize were that these pets likely enhanced our health! They still can. y husband, Daryl, lived in a mostly-happy home for four-and-a-half years. Then his mother chose to testify in court and was killed because of her brave stand. His father folded in on himself with grief, leaving his four small children with their grandparents and fleeing to Alaska. He didn’t contact Daryl again for seventeen years. No visits, no calls, no letters, nothing. Daryl was raised by his stern-but-loving grandmother and his sternbut-alcoholic grandfather in the constant tension of their emotionally abusive home.

I remember him laughing while telling me he loved going to the dentist. The reality; dentists and hygienists have their work cut out for them trying to keep children seated, all while dealing with toothcare fears. So, they are cheery and encouraging. My dear husband was so starved for affirmation, he did not recognize basic kindness. He thought he was incredibly skilled at dental visits to receive so much positive feedback.

Daryl never wanted to be an alcoholic, but alcoholism has a way of passing from one generation to the next like fog creeping along the forest floor. When did it arrive? How did it get there? No one knows until it has filled the surrounding space, deadening sound and lowering visibility. He didn’t start with beer because there wasn’t any. They had whiskey. So, at the age of twelve, Daryl started stealing his grandfather’s Wild Turkey. He would take a little every night until he had enough to stored in an old sport drink container to get hammered with his friends.

Once he had his driver’s license, Daryl did whatever he could to avoid home, leaving for weights and conditioning before school, going to wrestling or football practice after, then working nights at the local Safeway before heading home at midnight to do his homework. Daryl was the first person in his family to graduate from college. Actually, he was the first to graduate from high school. But leaving home doesn’t erase trauma and his drinking continued. He started a paper called “Criticisms of Christianity,” intending to singlehandedly disprove the Christian faith.

Then Daryl met his best friend at Washington State University. They played video games, tackle football without helmets or pads, and pulled elaborate pranks. Jon took the time to be kind. Several years later, Daryl went home for Christmas. His dog died over the holidays and the shock of being plunged back into an emotionally abusive environ-

ment rattled him. It emphasized the stark difference between home and the Christians who had welcomed him into their world.

He was so impacted by this kindness that when Jon asked if they could pause their game of Joe Montana football, Daryl said yes, even though he was winning the video game. Jon shared the gospel and my husband surrendered to Jesus that day.

Daryl changed the trajectory of his life, leaving behind his harsh childhood environment and forging a new way with the Lord. He became the loving husband and father that I admire today. God called us to full-time camping ministry and Daryl took up the mantle of leadership from my grandparents, who started Camas Meadows Bible Camp in 1973. We have worked in camp ministry for 26 years, seeing kids come as campers, grow up, marry, have kids, and send them to Camas as campers.

The man whose father abandoned him, has been a constant presence in the lives of his three sons, countless staff members and campers. The man who grew up without a mother’s love has stood beside me as I mother our sons and others God sends us.

The man whose childhood home was clouded with tension, cigarette smoke, and stray cat scents has opened our home to teens for food, boardgames and laughter. The man who lost his brother to suicide has walked beside many kids who were headed into darkness. Some were lost, and we grieve them fiercely. But some kept walking until they could see a glimmer of light, and we rejoice over their hard-won victories.

As I finished writing the blog for a middle school camp, I was struck by God’s gentle care. When our camp speaker for that week was thirteen, she planned to kill herself. Then someone sent her to camp. She chose Jesus — and life. There she was at camp once more, loving kids, pointing them to Jesus, and laughing at the crazy skits. God rescues.

He rescued Daryl and then called us to serve. I see God’s power in my husband’s story, but I also see His compassion. Sometimes God calls you to the impossible; a broken heart and hands reaching for children who are forgotten and alone, just like Daryl, so many years ago. It’s worth the heartache, my friends. Stepping out of the darkness and into the light is worth all the pain.  Daryl leading his boys on a hike.

Be Still and Know I am God

will admit that I was intrigued when, as a child, I first heard the story about the tortoise and the hare. When the story ended and the tortoise won, I was stunned at the outcome.

Running the race slow and steady like a turtle had much better results than how the hare ran, fast and careless. The moral of this story surfaced again recently during an encounter with my good friend, Ron. Ron pulled up in the church parking lot with a vanload of children. I was close by, so I helped open the door, which released a load of kiddos. While piling out of the van, various fast food wrappers came with them. Ron was a bit embarrassed as the containers revealed a variety of local fast-food restaurants their family was consistently supporting. We pulled up to a nearby trash can to make cleaning easier.

Something was revealed to both Ron and me that day. The pace of life had increased at record speed, and we needed to do something to slow it down. As we cleaned up the mess, Ron shared that his family was so busy, their dining room table was now used to fold clothes. They ate many meals in their van rather than at home. My good friend was frustrated and a bit overwhelmed by his current situation.

Ron wanted to discuss his current circumstance, but we both had to dash somewhere else. He wasn’t the only one suffering from this issue. On my way home from this encounter, I, too, had to admit my schedule was overextended. It left no time to locate those roses we are supposed to be smelling. I realized that our Lord did not create us to live like this — at the speed of life.

What is a person to do? Better yet, what is a child of God to do? The first order of business was to seek wise counsel. I knew where to go for that; our Heavenly Father. God made one thing clear; it was time to take more than two steps back and do some pruning.

things shall be added unto us. So, the best place to begin is to seek advice and help from our Lord. Priority numero uno was clear: set time aside each day to be alone with God. Rather than listening to the radio on the way to work, I began using this precious time fellowshipping with God. My eyes were open, but my heart was kneeling. It was then that something remarkable started occurring. While praying, I began to get responses from the Spirit of God. With these responses and insights came a profound sense of redirection and great peace.

During this time, some of my beliefs about what characterizes a successful life also began to change. For the longest time I was convinced that having a packed calendar and busy schedule indicated a successful life. This train of thought left me living a shallow life with little substance. Rather than sipping and tasting the miracles happening around me each day, I was guzzling each day, or should I say each day was guzzling me. I could not breathe in the beauty on display all around me. I needed to start sipping.

Something else also happened during this time that has greatly impacted my walk with our Lord. I have often felt a sense of guilt and shame about not reading through the Bible in a year. I have tried this approach and failed. It was during this time that my system changed. Instead of racing through the Scriptures, I began meditating on the verses at hand instead of checking them off my things-to-do list.

As I was implementing this new lifestyle, I came across a quote summarizing my newfound focus. The quote states, “Reading Scripture without meditating on it is like chewing food without swallowing it.” I now use a journal with the day’s Scripture reading displayed at the top. Sometimes, I spend many days on one particular passage. I guess you could say I am now swallowing the Word of God.

A New Outlook on Life

My daily calendar looked more like a lengthy grocery list of activities. The Psalmist tells us to ask God to number our days, not to number our activities. Matthew gives us insights and encourages us to seek the Kingdom of God first, and all these 34

found impact on my life that I have begun it all over again. It’s even sweeter the second time around.

My first impulse was to give you a list of ideas you might implement to live at a more suitable pace. Instead, I will encourage you to consider spending quality time with our Lord.

During this time, ask Him to reveal what needs to be done to live the way He intends you to live. I am convinced it is at a different speed than life. God opened my eyes to the fact that I needed to tame the calendar and live more calmly.

Yes, the calendar had gone wild and behaved like a feral animal. God revealed to me how vital it is to spend time with Him first and how He will then direct my life. The events on the calendar are now under scrutiny. The things-to-do list gets shorter and shorter while the pace of life becomes more tranquil.

God drove this lesson home while traveling in France, some time ago, with a group of high school students. Dinner was

served at a very methodical pace. One of the reasons I believe the food tasted so delicious is the time we had to savor the taste.

Sometimes, we sat for two hours while enjoying each course.

I remember feeling comfortable and content after our meal because the food had time to digest. It was a beautiful illustration of the immense value the Lord puts on living life like our friend, the tortoise.  Edward is a freelance writer from Glendale, California. oday I move an immobile dragonfly from the middle of the road. I coax him onto a dead branch, then gently set him in the sunniest spot I can find. The good news is, he’s not injured. He’s just sluggish from the chill in the fall morning air.

This time of year, all the coldblooded creatures gravitate toward the blacktop. They relish the warmth radiating up and the sun’s rays beating down. This little guy probably settled in yesterday afternoon. Evening came and his body, cooled by the moonlight, shut down. It’s a good thing he settled on a sleepy country road!

Some creatures are not so fortunate.

That pavement is so tempting, they hunker down in harm’s way. Creatures can’t reason in the same manner people do. They act according to their instinctual bents. God designed cold-blooded animals to seek out places to sun themselves. They don’t understand the dangers of resting on a highway.

Like cold-blooded creatures, people gravitate toward warm places; places

they feel appreciated, accepted, and understood. Sometimes those are safe places — a happy home, a solid church, a team, or a club built on common interests. Sometimes they are not.

Gangs, cults, and destructive social circles lure in the lonely, the outcast, or those starved for appropriate love and affection. They put themselves in harm’s way.

Unlike creatures, people aren’t driven by instincts. God created us with the power to reason and to choose, and to consider the consequences of our choices. We are not unwitting victims of our instinctual drives.

God used that dragonfly to challenge me in two ways.

Am I choosing wisely as I move through each day? In Joshua 24:15, Joshua exhorted the Israelites: “Choose you this day whom you will serve.”

Some days choosing to serve God seems like a no-brainer. Some days it’s hard!

Following God can be difficult. It can cost us friendships, financial security, creature comforts, even our lives. That’s why Jesus calls us to count the cost in Luke 14:28. “For which of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first

sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?” But in the end, the earthly sacrifices are worth the heavenly reward.

Which brings me to my next challenge. Am I helping others find the narrow way that leads to life? Am I doing my part to foster a warm atmosphere in my home, my church and my activities that attracts those who still have a cold-blooded heart toward God? Do I give them the healthy love and acceptance they need? Do I tell them they too can choose whom they will serve?

I can’t rescue everyone from the wide path that leads to destruction.

Many will choose to go their own way.

But maybe God can use me to rescue a few. 

Turkey’s Stand Against Christianity

Will Morris is the Middle East Correspondent for Morning Star News and one of its founding writers. He is an award-winning journalist and photographer whose byline has appeared in numerous domestic and international publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post and even Stars and Stripes.

Mr. Morris has spent roughly a decade covering the Persecuted Church and conducting research about freedom of religion — mostly in the Muslim-majority countries in which he lived. He also covers national security and environmental issues.

hen I asked Michal Geske, a Christian and expatriate graduate student, if she was concerned about the possibility of being expelled from Turkey after the government revoked her student visa, she responded in faith.

“If I have to leave, I will be OK, but it will be tough.” she said. “My last day in Turkey is in God’s hands and I have peace in that.”

In May, the government refused Geske’s application for a long-term residency visa. Her approval should have been a nonissue. She has lived in Turkey without incident since she was three.

Worse still, Geske — the eldest daughter of Tilmann Geske, a German missionary murdered in Turkey for his faith in Christ in 2007 — was thereafter informed her visa was cancelled and she had 10 days to leave the country. Geske has appealed the visa decision in the Ankara Administrative Court.

As the daughter of Tilmann Geske, Michal is uniquely and deeply rooted to Turkey in ways that are almost impossible for anyone outside the family to understand.

Tilmann Geske’s Death

On April 18, 2007, Geske, 45, along with Uğur Yüksel, 32, and Necati Aydin, 36, both Turkish converts from Islam, were murdered in the office of the Zirve Publishing House in Malatya, Turkey.

Five men entered the office, then bound, tortured and interrogated the men about their Christian activities before killing them.

The five men underwent a lengthy trial riddled with irregularities. Evidence linking the killings to the Gendarme, a national police force in Turkey, went uninvestigated.

Even the judge presiding over the case said he thought the killings could not have taken place without connections to a criminal organization, but the link could not be established. Eventually, the five men were sentenced to three terms each of life in prison. The men thought to have originated the plot went unpunished.

The Outcome

As a 13-year-old girl at the time of the killing, dealing with intense emotional pressure and the 40

loss of her father, Geske developed spiritual maturity and faith beyond her years. Instead of hating the perpetrators, she chose to follow Christ and forgive them. Instead of rejecting Turkey, she chose to embrace the country, its culture and its people completely. One could easily argue that Geske is as much Turkish as she is German.

Geske credits her spiritual survival to Jesus and the prayers of fellow believers throughout the world. Because she no longer has a physical father, she has a much stronger relationship with God, who in a real sense “has been a father to me.”

“I think it was a lot of grace and there were a lot of people praying for us. When you pray for people, it really does pull them through,” she said. “I know it has been in God’s hands from the start. Even though it was terrible, God will use it for His glory.”

The Turkish Government’s Stance

The government has not given a reason for denying Geske’s residency permit or student visa, but both decisions come at a time when the government is making a concerted effort to expel expatriate Christians from, or deny them entry into, the country. According to Christian

associations and religious freedom groups, the Turkish government has denied entry or expelled roughly 200 expatriate Christians since 2016.

Up until now, the government has primarily focused its actions to church leaders or missionary workers. Article 24 of the Turkish Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, stating, “Everyone has the freedom of conscience, religious belief and conviction.” But the government has deemed missionaries and those in pastoral roles to be de facto enemies of the state. Still, Geske said she doesn’t think she is being singled out. The visa situation is more of a general procedure toward Christians today in Turkey.

“I would assume they know who I am,” she said, adding there is no reason she would rise to their attention. “The only reason I can think of is me being active in church.” Geske is involved in musical ministries.

Geske’s possible deportation is troubling because the government seems to be expanding its strike.

Strangely, the expulsion of expatriate Christians may have an unexpected upside the Turkish government didn’t antici-

pate. As expatriate leaders are stripped away, Turkish leaders within local churches are being forced to rise up and lead.

PRAYER POINTS: PRAY Michal Geske will get her student visa reinstated, and her long-term visa approved.

PRAY God will continue to strengthen the Geske family and protect them while they are in Turkey; that they will be a light to those who are separated from God. PRAY Conditions will improve for all believers in Turkey, especially those who have fled from Iran and Syria.

PRAY All Christians facing possible deportation will get fair hearings in court regarding their status.

PRAY The Turkish Church will remain strong in the face of persecution.

PRAY Turks will see a clear difference between the Islamic religion and following Christ.

LASTING IMPACT When you write about people suffering for their faith in Christ, God speaks to you. There is no booming voice, and definitely no burning bush. Instead, you catch a glimpse of God’s greatness and the nature of who He is… and you praise Him. One of the most profound experiences I had covering persecuted Christians came from writing about the killings in Malatya, Turkey.

For a long time Malatya infuriated me. I simply couldn’t comprehend the hatred, sheer wickedness and brutality it took for a stranger to violently torture and kill Tilmann Geske, Necati Aydin and Uğur Yüksel.

Turkey is set against Christ and Christians who the government portrays as the enemy in the media and in the tens of thousands of mosques that cover the country.

I am sure those who arranged the Malatya killings smugly, victoriously patted themselves on the back at the thought of silencing the voices of these martyred men.

But they didn’t.

Seven years later, I attended the commemoration service for the Malatya victims. I found out how God used the deaths to cut through the lies authorities spread about Jesus and show Turks what it really means to follow Christ.

But I was most floored by the profound way God honored the sacrifice of Uğur Yüksel.

that printed Christian books. When he died, out of spite, the government would not allow him to be buried anywhere but in an Islamic graveyard.

Yüksel was laid to rest in Elazığ, near the entrance of the graveyard. The mausoleum looks innocuous enough, until you read the inscription declaring him a martyr. On blood-red stone the grave states, “İsa gibi öldürüldü,” literally, “Christ-like, he died.”

It struck me. Pretty much everyone in Uğar Yükel’s hometown will, at one time or another, walk by his grave.

They will see the inscription and invariably ask, what does “İsa gibi öldürüldü” mean?

In his death, Yüksel can arguably reach more people in Elazığ than he could if he was alive. Although his voice was silenced, his bones shout the Gospel from his grave.

I

n March of 1991, we received word that the US ambassador at that time, Robert Houdek, was summoning us all to the embassy (Robert is still a friend to this day). At the gathering, I saw that most of the people I recognized from Canada were not wearing the Canadian flag pins they typically wore to distinguish themselves from us Americans.

Ambassador Houdek told us that the TPLF [Tigray People’s Liberation Front] was at Dessie and headed toward Addis [Ababa]. With the Ethiopian army seemingly unable to stop them, the paramilitary group would be in the capital city in a matter of days. He advised us all to get a flight out as soon as possible.

The ambassador warned that if the US government had to order an extraction, the charge could be as much as twenty thousand dollars, an outrageous number at the time. Right away, I heeded the ambassador’s advice. Our third year in Ethiopia, we had brought Coy [son] back to Addis with us.

Of course, I didn’t want my family exposed to open conflict, placing their lives in danger, so we got the next flight out on March 22, 1991. Ambassador Houdek’s wife was also on our plane.

After being back in Boone for several days and getting my family settled, I returned to Ethiopia.

This would be the first time I would work with people who were fleeing a combat zone. The word refugee is actually a technical term for people who have been forced to flee conflict or persecution and have crossed an international boundary to seek safety. Internally displaced people (IDPs) are those who have fled their homes but are still within their own country’s borders.

By the time I returned, everyone was fearful of the TPLF’s takeover. Hoping for safety in numbers,

tens of thousands of IDPs had congregated in a football stadium, attempting to live there. Many were soldiers who had thrown down their weapons and taken off their uniforms. They had brought their family members with them and were now living in squalid conditions. A good number of the women there were pregnant, with some getting close to giving birth.

Seeing that need at the top of the list, I knew I had to come up with some way to help those women and their babies. I had an idea: We had built a greenhouse nearby with tables covered with plants. We had plant beds made out of plywood mounted on steel poles. The greenhouse had a staff of about twenty men, so, mobilizing that team, we cleared away the plants, covered the beds with plastic, and brought all the pregnant women there to get ready to deliver their babies. With the help of a local doctor and several nurses, we quickly turned a plant nursery into a human nursery.

Being in that stadium and seeing the horrific, filthy conditions these people were living in offered me the opportunity to better understand how to assess and meet needs in a crisis situation.

Setting up a birthing center on the fly and using only what we had at hand was a unique experience that helped me develop skills I would use my entire career. My time in Ethiopia taught me so many amazing lessons as I learned to discern what people needed, pay attention to how they reacted, and figure out how I could best meet their needs.

I received an amazing education living the oneday-at-a-time lifestyle of someone called to leave their comfort zone and go where people were fighting for survival every day. From navigating bureaucracy in a communist government to meeting the needs of impoverished and oppressed people to having to rig solutions, like converting a greenhouse into a birthing center, Africa gave me a crash course in how God can work in and through humanitarian assistance.

See, I am doing a new thing!

fter my 95-year-old mother, Mary Kahler, fell and broke her hip in 2020, she relied on a wheelchair for mobility. During her final two years, my sister and I saw firsthand the positive impact a wheelchair could have in someone’s life.

So, when Mom passed away in 2022, we wanted to give mobility to another family living with disability.

We donated my mother’s wheelchair to Joni and Friends, an international disability ministry that, among other things, collects used wheelchairs, restores them in prison-based restoration centers, and distributes them to low-resource countries through its Wheels for the World™ program.

The effort aims at a staggering need. Eighty million people worldwide need wheelchairs, according to the World Health Organization. But in some countries, as few as 5% of those people have access to one. My mother’s former wheelchair is one of nearly 230,000 that Joni and Friends has distributed worldwide since 1994.

I dropped off my mom’s wheelchair at the Joni and Friends Area Ministry warehouse in Bensenville, Illinois, where a few weeks later it was stacked into a 53-foot trailer bound for a restoration center near Kingman, Arizona. I tracked the chair’s progress by its serial number, 417213.

It took a year for the wheelchair to journey from donation to distribution and from prison to port. In that time, my family and I prayed for the stranger who would receive it. I developed a profound curiosity about the wheelchair’s destination and its recipient, so I promised myself I would meet the chair’s next owner.

That opportunity came in April of 2024 when the wheelchair reached port in Guatemala. I volunteered with a Joni and Friends Wheels for the World outreach team and made plans to meet up with my mother’s chair.

That’s when I finally met the chair’s new owner: Jesus Soida Castillo. I assumed my family would have little in common with Ms. Castillo. I was wrong.

After Joni and Friends volunteers matched her with my mom’s chair, I got to know Ms. Castillo. I learned she was a widow who needed a wheelchair because she had half of her foot amputated due to complications from diabetes. Her amputation surgery came just days after my mother’s death.

I was very familiar with Ms. Castillo’s condition.

My own father had half of his right foot amputated due to diabetes. I showed Ms. Castillo a picture of my mother and I explained, through an interpreter, that the chair’s previous owner had once cared for that same wound on her husband’s foot.

As a volunteer photographer, it was my responsibility to photograph Ms. Castillo as she was lowered into her new chair. Within seconds, she gave the team two thumbs up, a communication that needed no translation. She pointed to heaven and joyfully whispered, “Dios! Dios!”

Mom’s wheelchair was one of 193 distributed in San Benito that week, and one of nearly 11,000 wheelchairs that served people in 42 international locations in 2024 through Joni and Friends. The week in San Benito ended with 18 professions of faith in Jesus Christ. Every recipient also hears the Gospel and receives a native-language Bible.

My experience showed me that disability can impact anyone. It also taught me that hope has a name: Jesus Christ’s powerful, redeeming love comes with hands-on help. Everyone needs both of these things.

My mother was born in Canada. Ms. Castillo was born in Guatemala. Both have an eternal home in heaven because of their faith in Christ. Both lived with grueling care routines and struggles that come with diabetes-related disability. And both enjoyed long marriages to Christian spouses who joined them in church work.

Thanks to Joni and Friends, both were blessed by the same wheelchair – serial number 417213. 
