Student Example Targeting an audience The advert’s target audience is women. We know this because of the brightly coloured packaging and the flowers, which imply a fresh scent, which women would like and care about more than men. Stereotypically, it is women who do the washing and buy household goods such as this. It is aimed at women 20-45 as this would include many mothers taking care of the washing for the family. In terms of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the three needs which the advert appeals to are: 

Safety – because this need covers health, safety of the body and employment. If your clothes are unwashed and smelly, the chances of securing a job are low. Love/belonging – this advert appeals to the motherly role of caring for the family. Esteem – having clean and fresh smelling clothes would help you to have more confidence in yourself and raise self-esteem.
