READING ROCKETS BASKETBALL ACADEMIES Dear Players, Parents and Coaches Firstly, let us begin by welcoming everyone to the Reading Rockets Basketball Academies Prospectus. Within this prospectus player, parents and coaches will find the necessary details for all our Academy programs. As we are all aware, and none more so than here at Reading Rockets, the end of the season as well as the end of the academic year provides our young people with some difficult and challenging choices referring to their future. This is why, here at Rockets, we have produced this prospectus on our Academy program to give any player the opportunity to combine a high level of academic achievement as well as perform at the elite level of sport. This prospectus aims to clarify and aid in a young person’s decision at a crucial point in their lives as well as offer information to parents and club coaches to help their young person’s make an informed decision on their future.

Why choose to go to a Reading Rockets Academy? Reading Rockets manage and deliver two Sixth Form College based Academy programs and two Sixth Form School based Academy programs. Its flagship Academies are based at Thames Valley University (TVU) in Reading and The Henley College in South Oxfordshire just outside Reading. These two Academies provide a unique opportunity for a player to study a wide variety of courses ranging from A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate at The Henley College to the BTEC in Sports Science at Thames Valley University. Each academic route will aim to compliment a players training schedule making sure we stay true to our Academy motto “Work done, sneakers on!” The partnerships with the respective institutions give students a unique opportunity to study a wide variety of courses as well as develop an elite level of performance in Basketball. Along with these two academies the club will deliver within Windsor Boys School, Windsor and John Madejski Academy, Reading. THE ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP IN SPORTING EXCELLENCE (AASE) Reading Rockets Basketball Club was one of the first institutions to be awarded the AASE after England Basketballs initial pilot year. The AASE is a level 3 National Vocational Qualification which is designed to compliment a student’s academic program as well as assist them in tracking their training program throughout their 2 years. TRAINING, ACADEMIES AND THE CLUB Players will train for up to 7-10 hours a week around their academic timetable. In addition to this they will be assessed by a strength and conditioning coach and given an individual program to follow. Perhaps the most important aspect of our Academy program, and one which sets us apart from many other Academy programs, is the opportunity to play at the highest level of English Basketball within our celebrated club structure. Players attending the Academies will be expected to train and play for our U18 Premier or U18 Conference National League squads. In addition to this talented players will have the opportunity to train and play with our highly successful Division 1 Men’s team.

This is not the only pathway into senior basketball as players also have the opportunity to develop their skills before they move into Division 1 by training and playing with our Division 4 team. PLAYER PATHWAYS AND EXIT ROUTES After following a two year Academy and club program the “student athlete” will have the chance to pursue their career in basketball further with the club assisting athlete’s in finding placements abroad in the USA, Europe or at home. Current alumni include Danny Carter, Captain Stoney Brook University NCAA Division 1, Dan McKay former GB Junior international playing EBL division 1, Abdhul Ahmed, Oklahoma University and various other players representing at high school or college level. The prospectus will provide you with detailed information on each of our flagship Academies at Henley and TVU providing students living outside of Reading all the information required to make our Academy your choice of destination for your future. TVU BASKETBALL ACADEMY The Basketball Academy at TVU was set up 4 years ago to help bridge the gap for basketball players wanting to balance their education with a high level of performance in their chosen sport. Over the past two years the Academy has grown from a small number of interested players to a three tiered performancebased programme of excellence linked with the Reading Rockets five star club in the National League. This season the Academy has 13 selected performers and another seven players that are part of a development group. Average week Each student will get approx 11 hours of basketball each week on top of their chosen full time TVU study programme. The week is split into the following:

THE HENLEY BASKETBALL ACADEMY

COLLEGE

The Henley College Basketball Academy provides a unique opportunity for student athletes to pursue academic excellence, sporting excellence and gain valuable coaching awards. The Academy Head Coach Jonathan (JP) Campbell, under the direction of Reading Rockets Head of Junior Development and Thames Valley University Basketball Academy Head Coach Matt Johnson, has implemented a development program working in partnership with The Henley College and Reading Rockets Basketball Club, that gives students the opportunity to pursue a wide variety of educational courses as well as pursue their achievement of excellence in basketball. Unlike many other academies The Henley College Basketball Academy aims to bring together a high achieving academic environment with that of performance sport. Students attending the college can choose from a wide variety of courses such as A-Levels, National Diplomas, First Diplomas and the world-renowned International Baccalaureate. The Academy’s first aim is very clear and that is to ensure its Student Athletes gain a high standard of qualification while they train. Within the Academy itself athletes will develop their skills through a challenging program consisting of 4 main training areas: • • • •

Individual Co-operative Shooting Strength and Conditioning

Athletes competing at a high to elite level will be assessed by a Strength and Conditioning coach and given an individual conditioning program to follow. Each player will be fitness tested as well as undergoing shooting and skills tests. Along with developing the athlete the Academy combines the delivery of the UKCC Basketball Level I and II qualification with basketball. Overall the Academy provides an environment of high achievement on and off the court. With the successful partnership between Reading Rockets and The Henley College players have the opportunity to play at the highest level of club basketball whether it is at a junior level with our premiership or conference U18 squads or training with division 1 or 4 men. The Rockets system allows players a clear pathway of development into the highest level of senior English basketball.

READING ROCKETS CLUB STRUCTURE AND PERFORMANCE PATHWAY One of the major reasons that our Rockets Academies are successful is due to a strong elite development pathway and partnership with the club structure. The club prides itself on offering the highest level of coaching and competition making it an ideal choice for the player wishing to pursue their basketball career beyond that of an English league structure.

READING ROCKETS PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY

Our organisational structure and performance pathway is very clear for each player moving through our system. As an Academy player from outside the club the Academy system will allow you to make a seamless transition into our own player pathway. On arrival at the Academy a player will undergo an initial player profile to evaluate and record their future goals for the Academy. The players will undergo regular 10 weekly reviews always identifying their short term goals in relation to their long term ambitions for their future along this pathway and beyond!

ROCKETS ACADEMY STAFF COACH MATT JOHNSON Matt Johnson is the lead coach of the Academy programme and is also the Head Coach of the Rockets Junior programme. One of the most important roles of the lead coach is to ensure that all the elite players have effective training diaries, high level competition and a smooth pathway towards the top levels of competition in this country. Matt is Level 3 Advanced Coach, and is the only FECC qualified coach in England. Matt is also a Coach Tutor. Matt has led our U18 club side to 3 Final Fours winning once.

COACH JP CAMPBELL JP Campbell is the newest member of the Coaching team at the Rockets and is also one of the best individual tutors of technique. JP has coached all over Europe through the APC programme and has recently stepped up to work with the very best juniors in the club at our U16 and U18 programmes. JP Is the Head Coach of The Henley Academy and is one of the Coaches responsible for writing the Academy programme. JP is a Level 3 Coach. JP has just guided the U18 team to second place in the country.

STEPH JOHNSON Steph currently works as the nutrition advisor for the Reading Rockets basketball academy which involves advising the players on their food intake, timings of meals, hydration and also being on hand to discuss any problems the players have with their food intake in relation to the nutritional goals they are trying to achieve. Steph has a strong background in basketball being a player herself as well as being an advanced level 3 coach. She has run basketball programmes both in the UK and America and now currently runs Rockets girls programme. She studied nutrition at University as well as having a Diploma as a Nutrition specialist

THE ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP IN SPORTING EXCELLENCE (AASE) The AASE is designed to “support elite athletes in an educational environment” - England Basketball. The AASE is a Level 3 NVQ Apprenticeship. Reading Rockets was one of 10 places to be awarded the AASE in 2009/2010. Currently the program has the second biggest intake of students with 9 in the country highlighting the standard of program and its standing within the country. The 2 year program covers a variety of different areas and is designed to aid an athlete’s transition into the professional arena whether it is as a player or another professional such as a coach within basketball. As an apprenticeship it runs alongside the player’s technical certificate and other qualifications such as A-levels and the BTEC. The AASE covers areas such as nutrition, career and financial planning, monitoring training programs, game analysis and goal setting. The AASE forms an integral part of an athlete’s development allowing an athlete to easily track his development through the year. For the first time next year the players on AASE will be able to take advantage of cutting edge technology as the club will be running state of the art video technology acquiring a license from England Basketball to use Gamebreaker. Gamebreaker is a specialist piece of software designed to analyse video. Each AASE student will have additional support in the following areas; • • • •

Nutritional advice and support Strength and Conditioning Coaching support Academic support with completing the AASE

HOW DO I APPLY? After this initial meeting the coaching staff will advise the player on; a) the best route educationally and b) the best route for basketball. The above factors will influence and effect the decision of the Head Coach’s on giving the student the best advice, as to which educational establishment the player would be best suited. From this process the player can continue on their application to the relevant college or school. AND FINALLY... As a club and coaching staff we will offer the best possible advice to any player wishing to apply for one of our celebrated academies.
