DEAR FRIENDS, Plans are already underway for the 30th anniversary of our annual women’s conference. And ladies, I really do want you to be in on the big celebration. The women’s conference weekend is a great time for girl time, so call your mothers, daughters, sisters and friends and start making your plans to celebrate with us! We’re highlighting our guest speakers for the conference in this issue. We want you to get better acquainted with Joel Osteen and Christine Caine, two very inspirational and encouraging examples of a heart for God—a heart that is His home. But they’re no different than you or me. God created us all for relationship with Him. Of course, He gave us free will to choose or reject Him, but to be perfectly honest, I don’t believe our lives can be truly fulfilling apart from Him. And He obviously has no desire for anyone to serve Him apart from their own choice. I believe what God wants is to make His home in our hearts. He wants to live in us. That’s not such a bad deal when you think about it. He gives, freely and unconditionally, His love and all that it is. Think about that: His power, His strength, His peace and so much more! And all He wants is our heart.

BLACK

Sure, giving our heart to God means more than just saying a quick prayer of salvation. It means devoting our whole life to Him…for His purpose and His will to be accomplished in us. In return, we get to live good, productive, fulfilling lives.

CYAN

In other words, He lives in our heart, and we live an abundant life. Now that’s not bad at all!

in being a minister. How did you become the pastor of America’s largest church?

A. My dad was the minister at Lakewood Church and he encouraged me to preach for years but I just didn’t have the desire to. I finally agreed to give a sermon five days before he died in 1999. I just knew I was supposed to do

Q. You’re known as a great encourager. What keeps you encouraged? A. To hear people say that God has used me to help change their life. I’m encouraged by people all the time. And I wouldn’t be half the man I am if it wasn’t for Victoria. My wife has sown into me and she’s seen things in me that I’ve never seen in myself.

A. Your best days are still out in front of you. I see a lot of people who get stuck in a rut in their attitude… their marriage…their career. There are practical things we can do to be better. We should always be growing. We shouldn’t be at the same place next year as we are right now. God is a good God, and when we walk in His ways, He’ll take us places we never dreamed of. We’re excited to have Joel at this year’s conference and we pray you’ll come and be encouraged.

God has used Joel Osteen to encourage millions of people around the world. He is one of the most well-known inspirational teachers in America, and quite possibly the most positive. But believe it or not, he wasn’t always popular and he didn’t always want to be a preacher.

INTRODUCING GUEST SPEAKER

CHRISTINE CAINE

BLACK

She exudes purpose—and we’re delighted to have her share wisdom, godly confidence and hope for the future with you at this year’s women’s conference. Meet Christine Caine!

Q. You have a special heart for women. What do you want them to know?

Magenta

CYAN

A. I want every woman to know that she is loved by God and created by Him…for His purposes. There is so much more potential inside of us than we are currently realizing, and I want to help empower women to live out their God-given potential and purpose.

Q. You’re such a passionate speaker. Where does it come from?

A. I am Greek so passion is a part of my DNA, but I also know what Jesus has done in and for me, and I want everyone to experience His grace, love and mercy. I think when you have truly encountered the wonder of salvation you can’t help but be passionate.

Q. You cofounded the A21 Campaign. Tell us about it. A. We’re an abolitionist movement committed to ending human trafficking. I think one of the greatest abominations is to keep human beings in slavery. It is for freedom that Christ set us free, and freedom is the right of every human being and a cause we must all fight for.

Q. This year’s conference is all about hope. What does hope mean to you? A. In a world full of hopelessness, never has there been a more important time to proclaim the hope that is available to all in Christ. Jesus is this hope we have as an anchor for our soul. As many things in our world are crumbling, Jesus is both firm and secure. We’re overjoyed to have Christine back, and we can tell she’s excited about attending too. “Joyce is my spiritual mother and one of the greatest honors of my life is to have the opportunity to share in the celebration of her 30th annual women’s conference,” she said. “This will be a very special gathering.”

Colossians 1:27 says, To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory (NIV). I believe that God lives in us because we don’t have any hope to live the life God wants us to without Him strengthening and guiding us.

IF WE’RE GOING TO REALLY LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE, WHY DON’T WE DECIDE TODAY TO SURRENDER ALL OF OUR HEART AND LET GOD HAVE ACCESS TO EVERY ROOM IN OUR “HOUSE”? One of the things we do that grieves the Spirit of God is we talk to people in ways that don’t please or honor God (see Ephesians 4:29-32). And because God is inside us, when we say mean things to others or we mistreat them, it hurts Him.

In that moment, I realized He was right. I would have suddenly been able to open the door and be sweet. We need to understand that the reality is our great High Priest Jesus, is in the home of our heart all the time, and we shouldn’t be comfortable acting like that in front of Him.

GIVING GOD FREE ACCESS TO THE ROOMS OF YOUR HEART If we’re going to really live the Christian life, why don’t we decide today to surrender all of our heart and let God have access to every room in our “house”? And when God asks you to surrender the things in the rooms of your heart, you need to get excited, because something greater is coming. You need to say, “God, I give You free reign because I know You are good and

I went to church for many years and never knew that. I always felt like I was reaching for something. Then one morning I was praying and told God I felt like I was always reaching out to Him. He spoke to my heart that I needed to stop reaching out and start reaching in. See, I loved God but I had no idea that He actually came to live in me so we could be in close fellowship, and anytime I needed help, He was right there—at home in my heart.

We need to do it because we love Him, honor Him and adore Him. Because if He’s not comfortable, then we can’t be comfortable. Do you ever experience a discomfort in your spirit? If so, ask yourself: Is there something in my life that’s making God uncomfortable?

BLACK

Did you know that once you become a Christian God comes to live inside you? Yes, He lives in heaven, but He also lives in your heart. You are the home of God.

One time I was having a temper tantrum with my kids. I began praying, saying I was sorry and couldn’t help how I was acting and what I was saying. At the time, I really didn’t think I could help it. But God put this picture in my mind. He said, “You don’t have to act like this. If your pastor came to the door while you were in the middle of this fit, you’d be able to get over it then.”

CYAN

One of the things I love most about being at home is that I’m comfortable there. And since we are the home of Christ, we need to make sure He’s comfortable in us.

Here are some “rooms” we may need to give Him access to: The Study or the Library: Your Mind. What kind of things do you think about? The more you think of something, the more it becomes a part of you. God knows what you’re thinking. Are those thoughts grieving Him? Let’s work at thinking things that God wants us to think—things that are noble, pure, trustworthy… (see Philippians 4:8). You can choose what you think about. So when the devil tries to interject thoughts in your mind, remember you don’t have to just take them. Dining Room: Our Desires. Can we come to the point where we can say “God, I only want what You want, and if I’m asking for something You don’t want me to have, then don’t give it to me”? Our desires can cause the biggest problems in our life—especially when someone else gets something we want. But God wants

us to be happy for others when they are blessed and trust that He’ll do what is best for us in the right time. The Living or Family Room: Your Friends. Who are your friends? What do you talk about when you’re with your friends? I’m talking here about the people you spend your time with and those you open your heart to. Does your conversation put a smile on God’s face or does it grieve Him? Get together with people who love the Word and be creative with how you help others. You’ll get happier than you’ve ever been. The Workroom: Your Legacy. Are you bearing good fruit or are you just taking up space? Work with excellence and integrity. Remember: We need to do what’s right when no one’s looking because God is always with us. Recreation Room: Your Entertainment. Do you let God decide what movies you watch, the music you listen to or the things you read? There is nothing wrong with having a good time, but when our entertainment takes a stronger priority in our life than it should, there’s a problem. It’s not that you can’t have

any fun; you just need to choose what is best for you and is pleasing to God. The Hall, Closet, Attic, Garage or Basement: Hidden Things. This is where we hide all those things we don’t think we’ll use again, but we hold on to them just in case, things like self-pity or unforgiveness. God dealt strongly with me about self-pity. But even after I officially gave it up, I put it somewhere in that back closet of my life just in case I wanted to have just one more pity party. How about getting rid of everything that’s not pleasing to God?

ONLY WITH GOD’S HELP What are you holding on to that needs to go? You can’t do any of it without God. Ask Him to help you get rid of everything in the rooms of your life that isn’t pleasing to Him. If you do it in God’s timing, it’ll be so much easier. If you try to do it on your own, you’ll be frustrated and miserable with your striving. Jesus is a divine guest inside of you all the time—one who loves, understands, sees and hears you. He wants to live in oneness with you. Will you make Him welcome in every room of your house?

BY RICK RENNER

When our family first moved to the USSR in 1991, one of our flights required us to make a stopover in Warsaw while en route to Moscow. As we drove toward the center of Warsaw, I couldn’t help but notice the mammoth, Gothic-style building that loomed above the city. It was The Palace of Culture and Science, a structure of enormous size that had been built at the order of Joseph Stalin.

When construction began, it was called The Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science. Little did they know that years later it would be the location of Joyce’s first conference in Poland—a meeting proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Poland’s Difficult History

Poland has had a tough past. World War II devastated much of the country, and the old city of Warsaw was reduced to rubble. Poland lost 6,000,000 people—22 percent of its total national population. In addition, Nazis used Polish territory for the mass extermination of 3,000,000 European Jews. And the heartache wasn’t over for this nation when the war ended. The battle for the Polish soul continued. Quickly the USSR occupied Poland, and a period referred to as “Stalinization,” or “Sovietization,” was abruptly thrust upon the nation. As was true with other nations newly dominated by the USSR, the plan was to systemically demolish everything deemed “Polish” and to create a new Soviet state, including the mandatory learning of the Russian language. It was a grievous and grueling time for the Polish people.

Stalin’s Building a Symbol of Communist Rule

The Gospel Proclaimed

On that first stopover in Warsaw, I dreamed of someone coming one day to preach the Gospel in this building that had been erected by men with evil intentions. Imagine how powerful it would be for someone to preach the Good News of Jesus in this building that has served as a cathedral of Communism and atheism! I thought. So when Dave and Joyce Meyer invited my wife, Denise, and me to attend their meetings in Poland this year in this very auditorium, my heart simply rejoiced! When we arrived early on the day of the meeting, I could see people lining the outside of the building, waiting to take their places in the 3,000-seat hall that had once been used by the Communist party. We entered the auditorium before the main doors were opened, so Denise and I were able to watch as people, mostly young, quickly began streaming like rivers down the aisles to find a seat for the meeting. In a matter of mere minutes, the hall had filled from the bottom all the way to the top-level balconies that encircled the auditorium. What was once a cathedral of Communism for the Polish Soviet State was packed to overflowing with people who had traveled from all over Poland to study God’s Word with Joyce Meyer!

The Power of Books and the Internet

It was a foreboding reminder that the Polish people had fallen under the heavy hand of the Soviet Union, and that Stalin and the USSR were the new masters of the land. After Stalin’s death, his name was dropped from its official title, and it became known as The Palace of Culture and Science.

I asked David Meyer, “How many TV stations carry Joyce’s program in Poland?” I was shocked when I heard his answer. Except for satellite networks that carry Enjoying Everyday Life, there are no other stations in Poland that broadcast the program. Well, if this throng of young people hadn’t discovered Joyce via television, I wanted to know how they had discovered her ministry.

The Polish people had turbulent emotions about this tower that dominated the city. To most of the population, the building was a constant, painful reminder that a new, hideous Soviet reality had been forced upon them. When the doors to the 757-foot-tall building were first opened in 1957, it served as the headquarters for the Soviet-backed government that

David’s answer left me speechless and impacted me deeply. In addition to the many people who have read Joyce’s books, which have been translated into Polish, a large percentage of the 3,000 people in front of us were regularly watching Joyce via the Internet, where Joyce broadcasts her Polishlanguage program online as her primary media outreach

One of the most evident symbols of this “Sovietization” process was the colossal building I saw when I first drove into the city center. I gazed upon it, taking in the giant, Soviet emblems and colossal statues of proletariat workers that crowned the building and its towering spire that reached up to the heavens. The structure was intentionally designed to be identical to seven gargantuan buildings in Moscow, built under Stalin and called Moscow’s “Seven Sisters.” Designing the Warsaw building in such a similar way was no mistake. Rather, it was an intentional strategy to demonstrate the inseparable link that existed between Moscow and Warsaw. This is why many called this building the “Eighth Sister.”

dominated Poland. The imposing structure boasted 3,288 rooms, including a Soviet-style circular conference hall that could accommodate more than 3,000 people.

“what was once a cathedral of communism for the polish soviet state was packed to overfl owing with people who had traveled from all over poland to stu dy god’s word with joyce mey er!”

Soon it was time for Joyce to take the stage. As usual, she honored Dave by asking him to greet the crowd and proudly declared that he was God’s man for her life, joyfully telling the audience that she and Dave had been married for more than 40 years. The crowd applauded wildly, and one could sense the longing in the hearts of these young people to experience the joy of a good marriage. In front of them was living proof that a happy marriage is possible. It was a real-life sermon before their very eyes. As Joyce preached with the assistance of her Polish interpreter, the people seemed to hang on every word. Denise and I have heard Joyce preach around the world, but on that day, it seemed she opened her heart even wider than usual—sharing from the Word, from the abuse incurred earlier in her life, and from her personal experiences.

My mouth literally dropped open in amazement as I watched and thought about how powerfully God is using Joyce Meyer Ministries via the Internet and through books to touch this part of the world. It was a new concept to me that thousands of unsaved people might go online to watch a minister share the Word on a regular basis! The people were given follow-up material, including information on how to connect with one of the many local pastors assisting Joyce with the event. Then the meeting ended, and the team departed for the next meeting that was scheduled for the following day. But as Dave and Joyce left Warsaw, many changed people were left behind—young men and women with a new eternal destination to look forward to and a brand-new walk with God to begin. That colossal building, built years ago as a shrine to Communism and atheism, had truly become a temporary cathedral, where the Gospel of Jesus Christ had been both declared and demonstrated to the glory of God!

As she related how God called a simple housewife from Fenton, Missouri, and used her to touch the world with the RICK RENNER is a highly respected leader, teacher and author within the Christian community, both in the U.S. and abroad. Joyce Shares Her Heart with the People

Then at the end of the day’s meetings, an altar call was given for salvation, and I immediately understood why most of the people hadn’t sung along earlier during worship. Joyce asked people to raise their hands if they wanted to make Jesus the Lord of their lives, and to our surprise, approximately 80 percent of the people raised their hands! The people prayed a prayer of repentance and invited Jesus to be Lord of their lives.

CYAN

Soon the Hillsong team from Kiev, Ukraine, appeared onstage to dynamically lead the packed hall in worship. I could see that a large number of the people didn’t know the songs (I would discover why later). Hillsong gave 1,000 percent as they rocked that building with anointed worship, and the presence of God hovered over the crowd.

How to Trust God with Your Precious Destiny BY JOYCE MEYER

CYAN

Women go through a lot of different stages in pregnancy, some more enjoyable than others. And the stage right before the birth when the pain is so intense that a woman thinks she’s going to die—that’s when the doctor won’t say anything to her but push.

Magenta

Maybe you’re pregnant with a dream or vision from God. Some of you are in the beginning stages and you’re really excited about what God’s called you to do. Others are in the waiting stage thinking, When is this thing ever going to take shape? And a few of you are in that painful stage when God’s getting ready to deliver a blessing and you need somebody to keep yelling, “Push!” Well, I hope that’s what my teaching does for you.

Yellow

I could not begin to tell you about all the times in my life when I wanted to give up on God’s vision for me because I honestly felt like, I cannot take this anymore! But God gave me the grace to keep going. And I want you to know how important it is for you to keep going too.

I want to see more people who are willing to go through the process even though it takes much longer than they’d like it to take. And I want to encourage you that as a Christian you can do it.

What to Expect When Youʼre...Expecting Get a new mindset. Plan to wait. Expect your vision to take longer and cost more than you ever thought it would in the beginning. Just get it into your head that no matter how long it takes or how hard it gets, you’re going to keep going.

“The way we carry children and give birth to them is a great example of how we’ll give birth to everything in our life.” A lot of us try to make things happen quickly. We look for the fastest, easiest way to get things done because we just don’t want to wait on God. One of the surest ways to know if you’re operating in the flesh is if you’re frustrated all the time.

Dreams are

knocking on your

door .

Open up to what God’s calling you to do... no worries, no excuses.

The Bible says it’s only by faith and patience that we inherit the promises of God. And you can wear yourself out trying to earn those promises or you can receive them as a free gift through Christ. Many of us will learn this lesson simply by going through it ourselves. But I want you to know there’s a better way.

Learning to Live in Reliance on God

The way we carry children and give birth to them is a great example of how we’ll give birth to everything in our life. There’s a seed, the stages of preparation, and the transition to a birth—a new thing that’s coming. And if you have to go the long, hard way to learn it, which most of us have to do, then so be it.

What did Jesus say? Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest (Matthew 11:28). God’s power comes to us freely, enabling us to do with ease what we could never do on our own with any amount of struggle and effort.

BLACK

You know what I pray for now on a regular basis? I pray for a holy ease. I don’t expect everything in my life to be easy. But I believe even in the hard stages of life you can be spiritually at rest. That’s when you know God’s all over it. The work may be hard, but it’s good. And you know in your spirit there’s going to be a harvest because you’re not trying to do something yourself—you’re relying on God.

Yellow

No matter how long it takes, just know this: God’s working with you the way it has to be done, for reasons that only He understands. But God has a good plan in mind. And the last thing you want to do is give up in the middle and miss out on God’s reward. So please, keep on trusting Him. Push!

Are you willing and ready to become a student of the love walk? If so, you need to know that it requires education and commitment.

we choose to love someone, it will cost us something—time, money or effort. That’s why we are told to count the cost before we make the commitment.

We must have our minds renewed to what love really is. Love is tangible; it is not just a spiritual thing that cannot be seen or touched. It is evident to everyone who comes in contact with it. Love is a decision we make—a decision to treat people the way Jesus would treat them.

First Corinthians 14:1 says, Eagerly pursue and seek to acquire [this] love [make it your aim, your great quest]….

Love Wants to Pay the Price

If you and I want to learn about love, we will have to study it. We will have to read books about it, listen to teachings on it, familiarize ourselves with everything Jesus and the apostles said about it.

Look for love in action. Try to find someone who operates in love and study that individual. Watch how he or she handles people and difficult or tense situations. Observe how they give. Examine the fruit of their life. I encourage you to view love as your first priority in life. Study it, seek it, pursue and acquire it, because God’s Word boldly tells us that we’re nothing without it.

When we make a true commitment to walk in love, it usually causes a huge shift in our lifestyle. Many of our ways— our thoughts, our conversation, our habits—have to change. For instance, we may be accustomed to spending all our extra money on ourselves only to discover that walking in love requires that we spend it on others.

APPROACHING THE BIBLE IN TODAY’S MODERN WORLD WHY STUDYING THE BIBLE MATTERS AND HOW TO DO IT BY CRAIG GROESCHEL

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. —2 Timothy 3:16,17 (NLT)

Unfortunately, like most kids—and probably many adults—I opened my Bible to the first page and just started plowing straight ahead. No matter how many times I attempted

it, eventually I’d run out of steam. I’d start Genesis strong, and Exodus held my attention with some cool stuff (like fighting!)… but Leviticus would do me in every time. My relationship with the Bible is much better these days. It speaks to me every day, breathing out life and purpose. Just like Hebrews 4:12 says, The word of God is alive and active.…it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (NIV).

As the pastor of LifeChurch.tv, I often meet people who genuinely want to grow in God’s Word, but they simply don’t know where to begin. While I’m certainly no expert, here are a few tips that have helped me over the years maintain a healthy, vibrant relationship with God through His Word:

Yellow

When I was a kid, I wanted to understand why the grown-ups at church seemed so serious about the Bible. It felt like this huge, intimidating book. Though I could tell it was important, I didn’t really understand it.

SHARE.

Someone said, “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” If you just open the Bible randomly and try to read each day, your odds of a meaningful and ongoing commitment are small. I recommend picking a plan and sticking with it. You can easily find Bible plans that break the whole Bible into manageable daily portions, presenting the Bible topically, chronologically or in devotional formats. The Bible App from YouVersion has more than 150 such plans you can choose from. joycemeyer.org/youversion

Connecting with others to share what you are learning reveals insights you can’t get alone. You may try actually reading together, or simply read the same thing others are reading, then meet regularly to talk about what God is saying.

DEDICATE SPECIFIC TIME.

No matter what, when you consistently spend time with Scripture, you will grow to know God more intimately and serve Him more faithfully.

If you’ve ever tried to read the Bible but didn’t understand it, you might have benefitted from a different Bible version. Some people stumble over “thee” and “thou” while others find the traditional language rich and meaningful. Many newer translations use plain language (while staying true to the original manuscripts), making them easier for some to read. In fact, our church developed YouVersion, a free Bible App for your smartphone that offers more than 140 different versions in over 40 languages. Find an easy-to-understand version that best speaks to you. joycemeyer.org/youversion

We find time for what we want, but we actually schedule what’s truly important. I encourage you to give God the best of your day, whether that’s first thing, or in the evening when it’s quiet, or even refocusing midday.

LISTEN.

TAKE NOTES.

Audio versions of the Bible are easy to get too. If reading is challenging for you, you can listen while you’re driving, exercising—even reading along!

Often when you read, your mind will flood with new ideas: sometimes questions, other times answers. Take time to write both down. Record what God is showing you to review later.

KEEP GOING. If you miss a day, don’t quit. It may be tempting to feel like a spiritual failure and stop altogether after skipping a day or two. Simply pick it back up, open your heart and let God continue to speak to you.

AMERICA AT ITS BEST

AMERICA’S DIVINE PURPOSE Following the Call Jesus Gave on a National Level

So, before America could be used to send the Good News to other countries, Christ needed to work on the hearts of the American people first.

Last time, we talked about the circuit-riding preachers. They were one example of the many innovative ways the Lord prepared and shaped our nation to be a beacon of hope. As He prospered our efforts, His purpose for America became clear: Take the Good News to the far corners of the earth. But He needed to get America ready first.

As Christians, we generally believe God has a purpose and a plan for our lives. But did you know God also has a purpose and a plan for the United States?

AMERICA AT ITS BEST AMERICA’S DIVINE PURPOSE Probably the two greatest contributors to America’s godly heritage began with the First (1730-1760) and Second (1795-1845) Great Awakenings. These revivals in the early days of America’s history, filled with circuit riders, camp meetings and prayer revivals, fostered a focus of the American people back toward God. Many who had fallen into a stale routine of religion were “awakened” with a new vigor and passion for the Gospel. Thousands accepted Christ as these seasons of spiritual renewal helped bring about the abolition movement, explosive growth of Sunday schools and Bible societies, and various social reforms. As America’s Christian converts multiplied, churches grew and the newly formed Methodist and Baptist denominations expanded their memberships.

The Birth of “Foreign Missions” The early moves of God received by multitudes of the American people laid the groundwork for God’s primary purpose for America to continue–taking the Gospel around the world. Who did God work through to begin this American spiritual tradition? Most historians agree it was Samuel Mills, Jr.

Praying in a Haystack

One summer day in 1806, Samuel and four friends agreed to hold a prayer meeting in a field near the college campus. As they began, a large thunderstorm rolled in. They found shelter in a nearby haystack and kept on praying. As the thunder clapped, God gave them a fire in their belly to spread the Gospel beyond the shores of America. “The Haystack Prayer Meeting” is considered the seminal event of today’s robust American missions movement. This initial meeting led to a group called the Society of

“These beginnings helped America send out more missionaries abroad than any other country in history.” These beginnings helped America send out more missionaries abroad than any other country in history. God set the stage—a nation with a special destiny.1 But if our nation is going to continue to be a leader in world missions, we must remain a godly nation. Americans must continue to be people with a tender heart toward Jesus Christ—we must have a humble desire to continue to live our lives and conduct our affairs in ways that are pleasing to God—on a personal and national level. The next time you participate in a foreign missions trip or give support to foreign missions, remember how God used “The Haystack Prayer Meeting” to begin the American legacy of foreign missions and opened the door for all Christian Americans like you to freely share the Gospel of Jesus Christ at home and around the world. And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach and publish openly the good news (the Gospel) to every creature [of the whole human race]. –Mark 16:15

FREEDOM AND FAMILY A Desperate Mother Finds Christ and Hope for Life Outside Prison

T

BY KACIE CAMPBELL

Two o’clock—a shower, razor blade and bottle of aspirin. And a desperate mother, serving a four year sentence. Clare was filled with shame, guilt and pain for the decisions that separated her from her precious children. But it was in this moment of intense despair that she found God.

But He did. Not audibly, but He clearly let Clare know I am here and I will hold you, protect you and make sure you are okay.

Magenta

Clare exited the shower to find a group of her fellow inmates praying for her. She knew after this encounter with God and the prayers of these women that her life would never be the same. The next day Clare was introduced to Joyce’s teachings, first through TV and then the book Battlefield of the Mind. “It was as if God sent her to speak into my life…to my battle. It provided me with hope and clarity.”

“My head was spinning and it felt like a dozen knives were taking sharp stabs. With my stomach twisting and the walls closing in, I whimpered, ‘God’ as if He was going to respond, but not actually believing He would.”

into society—a halfway house in St. Louis. One of only a few Christians in the building, the other women began coming to her for advice and to share their many burdens. Her response was to tell them about God and direct some to Battlefield of the Mind. The ladies would go away with a chapter or two to study and find the same help Clare received from those pages while incarcerated. Volunteers from the St. Louis Dream Center came regularly to visit the ladies, offering prayer and food. One night God answered their prayers for Clare, and He changed her life once again.

“The ladies would go away with a chapter or two to study and find the same help Clare had received from those pages while incarcerated.”

“For the first time in weeks, I felt like I could take a deep breath of relief. As they prayed for me, my hope was reinforced and my courage to move forward increased. I felt like I was visited from heaven that evening.”

“The love, kindness, generosity and acceptance that were extended to me at the Dream Center is what I now share with others. I want people to know that they matter and they are loved!”

Thankfully, the Dream Center, was on the list of approved churches for the ladies in the halfway house. Filled with anticipation and joy, she began attending and was comforted by the warmth of the people, especially the lead pastors. Clare grew up in foster homes where she experienced the dysfunction and

Now you can take Joyce’s practical messages on the go with your smartphone, tablet or computer! The YouVersion Bible App exclusively presents Joyce Meyer: Promises for Your Everyday Life – A Daily Devotional to help you pause for prayerful moments throughout your day.

Prayer doesn’t sound like much fun to Harley and Hayley Hippo until a few neighborhood friends teach them how to break the rules. This carefree story encourages kids to talk to God anytime, anyplace—even at the ice cream shop! They can talk loudly or softly, and say silly stuff too. The point is prayer doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be from the heart.

REAL LIFE PERSPECTIVES

God. or God? Preparing to Answer Tough Questions About Salvation

N

BY KACIE CAMPBELL

The only thing that baffled me…he was an atheist. And I’m not talking about just a passive atheist…I mean someone who blatantly speaks out against Christianity and all it stands for. So I’m not sure Facebook was really hitting the nail on the head with this one. If you look at my page, it’s pretty clear I love Jesus, so other than the fact that we are both writers, we have absolutely nothing in common.

Apparently, Facebook analyzes your profile: occupation, education, religion, etc. and then finds people it thinks you might want to be friends with. And that’s what happened with this guy. My profile popped up on the side of his homepage. I’ll give most people a shot as a friend, so there it was…we were now friends. Facebook made a new connection!

Not long ago I received a new friend request on Facebook. His message said, “Facebook suggested that we might want to be friends and you looked interesting, so I thought I’d add you.”

My Heart Began to Grieve But in a strange way, it was actually refreshing for me to talk with this guy, hear his side of things and try to understand what someone who doesn’t know Christ believes in. But still my heart began to grieve for him because I desperately wanted him to know the Jesus who has made my life so complete and full of joy. I’ve always been the sort of person who just believes Jesus is who He says He is. He came to earth to set an example for us, be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins and bridge the gap between us and God. And if I believe that and I seek Him with all my heart, I’ll spend eternity with Him in heaven. (I have to give my mom some credit for this too.)

Why Does Someone Decide to Follow Christ? But this “friendship” made me think about salvation in a brand-new way. It opened my eyes to the fact that people, even other Christians, don’t come about this belief so easily.

It made me start to ask my own questions. Why does someone come to Christ? Where does that desire come from? And if I share Christ with people, what do I say? God reminded me that only He can draw people unto Himself (see John 12:32); He simply allows us to be part of what He’s doing by asking us to love Him and to love others (see Matthew 22:37-40). He doesn’t call us to love others simply for our own benefit. He calls us to love others so when they get a glimpse of the love of God, they don’t want anything but Him. That’s my prayer for my atheist Facebook friend and for everyone who hasn’t experienced the love of Christ. The Bible says anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. So call on Him, get to know Him through His Word and love Him with everything you are. It’s going to be the best decision you could ever make.

If you’ve accepted Christ for the first time, we’d like to give you a book by Joyce, “A New Way of Living,” that will help you learn more about the decision you just made. Forgiveness Heals. Hurt happens. It’s one thing in life that’s essentially guaranteed. Unfortunately, forgiveness isn’t a guarantee. It’s a choice we can make to set ourselves free from pain that keeps us trapped in a state of fear, resentment or anger. So how come we get stuck on issues we just can’t seem to let go of? Why are we so afraid to surrender our pain? Joyce’s newest book brings you face to face with one of the toughest subjects Christians are called to confront.
