Meet the Journalist In that picture below is me, Joycelyn Hope Price. That is me in spirit, but not in apperance (Now, I have an afro). That picture was taken on my first digital single lense reflex camera, sophmore year and my first year(2011-2012) on the Legacy and Newspaper--(the last year for newspaper-staff). I was getting grid paper for our spread theme project, which at the end if the theme was good, then that would be picked for the following year' s yearbook. My theme idea was picked for the second time in my publication career. Over the years I have found out that enjoy taking photographs more than writing. I did enjoy newspaper when the writing was over, but not during write. I figured newspaper was not for me. Yearbook allowed me an outlet for my photography. The yearbook staff felt right for me.

My love for photography arrived when I underrstood photography. After going to SCSPA and SIPA conferences I understood what photography is. It is not a click of a button, but it is a little bit a math--really small bit-and plenty of electronic common sense. Sometimes people are born with electronic common sense, while some are not. I enjoy sports photography and you will see that throughout my portfolio. I enjoy photography. so much that I am vice president of Dutch Fork High School' s Photography Club. My friend Jade, who you will see in my portfolio as well, is the president. She brings the portrait photography, while I bring the candid shots for the club. The yearbook and newspaper has helped me decipher what are my likes and dislikes in the field of Journalism.

First and Worst feature story I ever wrote‚ it was not published. It is a step towards the better side of writing. Wrote this my freshman year (20102011) as an entry to the newspaper and yearbook staff. Pageant season at Dutch Fork was arriving‚ but it never came (at the very end of the article a senior states that it has been cancelled.). Did not focus on why it was cancelled‚ but on people's perception of it.

My friend and I decided to do a documentary on local Civil Rights Activist for a competition. I interviewed and filmed it. My friend edited it‚ minimally. It was extremely fun. The stories were unforgettable. The documentaryi is called "Homegrown By:Dalya Beckett and Joy Price" on youtube. It is about three minutes. Due to the deadline and time restraints we could not include the woman in the picture above. We split the interviews: Dalya interviewed Cecil Williams while I photographed and taped it. Cecil Williams (the top picture taken by myself) is one of my role models. Cecil documented the Civil Rights movement in Columbia and Orangeburg through photography. His work is beautiful. V. Riley is the woman pictured below Cecil's in the right corner‚ which Dalya Beckett took while I interviewed her. She is a teacher and a storyteller. She has an amazing life story. She has marched and displayed her kind spirit all across this nation.
