design academics The Department of Design offers a creative, challenging, and flexible approach to the study of design with emphasis on socially responsible, humancentered, and sustainable practice. Pursuing your MFA in Design or majoring in Design as an undergraduate offers you the chance to make a difference through design, combining your artistic skill and training with experience in practical and commercial applications. Under the guidance of the Design faculty, you will learn to give the products of your imagination a tangible shape and put your creativity to use solving real-world problems.
EXPLORE THe POSSIBILITIES
The UC Davis Department of Design is the only comprehensive academic design department in the University of California system. We deliver a research-focused graduate (MFA) and undergraduate (BA) curriculum that fully integrates design history, theory and criticism with design thinking, making, writing, visual literacy, and creative practice. Studio courses include design as practiced in exhibition, lighting, fashion, textiles, information and visual communications (digital, environmental, print), interior architecture, and product design. We stress strategies of sustainability, reuse of materials, and inclusivity.
OUR CuRRICULUM Our curriculum encourages students to work interdisciplinarily across different areas of design in order to solve particular problems that demand skills and techniques across disciplines. Students will be introduced to computing skills in all course work without sacrificing knowledge in handcraftsmanship. The department has dedicated studios and computer labs where projects can be constructed in a very collaborative environment. We welcome you to explore our website and to contact and join us, to advance design in the ways you see it needs to grow.
The Design faculty strongly encourages students to study abroad. Through this experience students can gain valuable knowledge about design in other cultures and can develop a much richer understanding of design. Interaction with design students and faculty worldwide provides a distinctive approach and diverse perspective to design problems and their creative solutions. Different geographical and cultural regions offer unique environmental and cultural elements that can greatly enrich the design process, for students and future design professionals.
The design faculty at UC Davis, through their personal travels and collaboration with faculty and professionals all over the world, illustrate the value of international experience, incorporating these international experiences and research into their own design practices and their teaching.
M.F.A. PROGRAM The M.F.A. program in Design unites theory and practice. This two-year program encourages an interdisciplinary approach. The Department of Design at UC Davis offers graduate students a unique opportunity to work with a dedicated and renowned design faculty within one of the nation’s top public research universities. Our graduate students will have the option to focus on intensive studio activity, work on collaborative projects with other design students and faculty, focus on sustainability and its relationship to the design practice, and/or take advantage of collaborative opportunities with over 100 departments and programs at UC Davis. These range from the arts and humanities, to social science and politics, to biological science and agriculture, or projects with the UC Davis Professional Schools of Medicine, Law, or Veterinary Medicine.
