Island Dogs for all seasons

They came in all shapes and sizes. Twenty-six entries in all. Their ages also varied. In fact, the top two vote-fetchers are separated by eight years; that’s 56 in dog years. A total of 315 votes were cast online at www.sanjuanjournal.com, for the contestants in the Journal’s “A Dog for All Seasons” contest. In the end, 13-year-old Curie, a Belgian Sheepdog mix, outdistanced Pebbles, a 5-year-old Bassett Hound, by just seven votes. Prizes and treats, donated by local merchants, await the top for vote-getters. Every dog certainly does have its day.

A Doggie Gone Good Contest! Curie outpaces Pebbles for first place, by a nose By Scott Rasmussen

Nearly three weeks after it all began, and after more than 300 votes had been cast, the two dogs at the front of the pack were running neck-and-neck in the Journal’s “Dog for All Seasons” contest. In the end, “Curie” a Belgian Sheepdog mix, whose favorite toy happens to be a stuffed jackalope, beat out Pebbles, who loves Bully sticks, by a nose. “It was a tough battle,” Julie Gralow, Curie’s owner, said of the contest, the last few days in particular. “I think we were able to get just enough people to vote for her with our ‘Campaign for Curie’. Curie outpaced the contest’s first runner-up, Pebbles, a 5-year-old pure-bred Basset Hound by a mere seven votes: 123 to 116. Pebbles’ owner, Leah McConnell, said that she hit the campaign trail on behalf of her dog, too. “I kept pushing as many people as I could to vote for her,” McConnell said of the final days of the contest. “I got up every day and voted and kept checking the numbers.” Voting began April 24 and closed May 9, with 26 different contestants vying for prizes, awards and recognition as San Juan Island’s “A Dog for All Seasons.” Though Pebbles came up just short, McConnell said that she was struck by the amount of votes the former show dog earned over the course of the contest.

Above; the winner of the Journal “A Dog for All Seasons,” Curie, 13, a Belgian Sheepdog mix, likes nothing better than a taste or two of a freshly caught spot prawn. Top right, Curie’s placard at Eddie’s & Friends Dog Park, on Mullis Street, one of her favorite island hangouts. Right, Julie and Hugh Gralow, and Curie, out on the water.

“Someone voted for her from South Africa,” she said. The Gralow’s expect Curie will take her new-found status in stride.

“Her favorite thing to do is to go to the beach and have us throw a stick,” Gralow said. “She likes the foxes and deer too.” She doesn’t expect that to change anytime soon.
