Hall at the University of Mississippi. To the left of the dummy near several shelves filled with many jugs of chemicals and hundreds of glass beakers and test tubes lies a bright orange revolver and shell casing. This was a murder and the kids at the

American Academy for Forensic Sciences (AAFS) CSI Camp are the only ones who can solve it.

Levy takes a lifetime of memories with him from the OFD

John Levy may not be with the Oxford Fire Department in a physical capacity any longer, but his heart will always be with the men of the department. Levy recently retired from the OFD after 28 years of service. His final rank was Battalion Chief, and his final days working with the men came at the new fire station on McElroy Drive.

“It's been great, unbelievable. Without a doubt, it was the best thing I did,” Levy said not long before his sendoff party. “It hasn't sunk in yet. In a month or so, it's going to really kick in to what happened.”

Levy is still young in working standards at 51. Him leaving was more about it being time in relation to how much further he could go up the chain of command.

“In my position as Battalion Chief, I had been in it for four years. I probably wasn't going any higher in terms of rank and in the retirement

John Levy system, after you've been in a certain position for four years, you're pretty much topped out,” Levy explained.

“I thought it was time for the next person to step up in my position and get his high four.”

The Battalion Chief runs the entire 48-hour shift that is on duty at the various stations. There are three shifts, A, B and C. All the fire calls, station duties and general paperwork for that shift is handled by the spot Levy occupied.

As a kid, Levy wanted to fight fire. He owned a number of fire trucks as a child, even one that he could sit on and drive, and extend the ladder up front.

“My grandfather would

take me by the fire stations.

He grew up here his whole life and Oxford was a lot different back then. I was in high school and I would hang around the fire station,” Levy said. “We would play cards … I guess I didn't have a choice.”

There were a number of calls Levy went on over the years he won't forget. Firefighters deal with a lot of heartbreaking moments due to the loss of personal property, or the vehicle wrecks that involve extrication.

“Those extrications where children involved are the most heartbreaking. That's the type of stuff I would like to forget,” Levy said. “I've seen some pretty bad things

If you're not scared, there is something wrong with you, especially when you have fire rolling over your head.”

One of those close calls with a fire came when Levy was a basic firefighter years ago following two others into the old golf shop on University Avenue.

“I came in with another line just to back them up, and the fire rolled all the way over me and cut them off. I went in myself and got it off them. Those guys to this day talk about that,” Levy said.

“It's a brotherhood, it really

is. Especially from shift to shift and station to station.”

Chief Cary Sallis has known Levy since they were both at Lafayette. Sallis got to know Levy better and better through the department.

Sallis said Levy was the last original person from when he started, which means Sallis is the most senior member of the department with Levy retired.

“He was the last of the original B shift when I was hired. One of the first fires I ever got to fight with John was the Better Brand Distributing building back in like 1989. I was on the volunteer side and they called everyone in to help,” Sallis

said. “I got on a hose with John and he told me to hit the fire. He would say 'It's still burning, hit it.' I opened the nozzle. I know we did that for about 10 minutes.

What it was a streetlight we were seeing on the other side of the building through a skylight that burned out.

That's what we were seeing through the smoke. We weren't spraying fire, it was a streetlight thinking it was fire.”

Moments that produced a smile or laugh are just some of the many things Sallis has shared with Levy. The department has grown since TURN TO LEVY PAGE 5

Oxford Film Festival recieves MAC grant

The Oxford Film Festival has been awarded a grant from the Mississippi Arts Council totaling $21,000.

Money from the grant will be going to overseeing many different aspects of the festival, as it will be put in their operations budget.

This goes towards events, special screenings, compensation as well the actual festival itself.

The operating grant from the Mississippi Arts Council is one of the biggest grants the organization awards. The money is a portion of the $1.61 million that the council will give out in 2015 and 2016 to help Mississippi organizations with operational funds. The money to fund these grants comes from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The creative economy

has never been more vibrant than it is today in the communities across Mississippi,” Tom Pearson, executive director of the Mississippi Arts Council, said in a press release last week. “This agency is honored to play a small role in assisting these organizations to continue their work of reinforcing the value of the arts and the role they play in creative place-making and economic development.”

This is the first year that the Oxford Film Festival was eligible to apply for the grant due to their recent addition of a permanent staff member, Executive Director Melanie Addington. She said that the festival has grown significantly over the past couple years and that this grant will play a big role in helping the festival keep up with the increased demand being put on the festival as it expands.

Addington said that she is extremely grateful for what the grant represents and how it shows that people are recognizing the significance of the film festal and the larger impact that the arts can have on the state and its economy.

“It shows that the state is committed to supporting the arts and to sup-

porting our film festival,” she said. “This is the largest grant we’ve ever gotten, and is one of the larger operating grants they award. I have friends from other states who run other film festivals who never see their state supporting them like this. It is a very big deal for a film festival of our level to receive this kind of support.”

Monthly programming being put out by the film festival this year has so far been largely underfunded.

Addington said that they have really just been skating by on the bare minimum of what they were able to do, but this grant will allow them the opportunity to make sure all their bases are covered and breathe a little easier.

A portion of the money will also go toward the production of this year’s Community Film, which is set in Oxford and produced, filmed and performed by locals.

Though much of the details of this year’s Community Film is being kept under wraps, Addington said that the film’s story will center around an Oxford-based superhero as he meets other superpowered beings in the area who have some strange and extraordinarily specific abilities.

Festival taking place in Oxford the weekend of August 11, the film festival will be providing community members the opportunity to be in the Community Film. There will be a large scene being filmed on the Courthouse lawn that will require many extras and anyone in the community wishing to join in is welcome to participate.

Other projects that will be funded by the grant include the film screenings the festival has begun organizing at Shelter on Van Buren every month. Neither Shelter nor the film festival charges an admission fee to these screenings despite the fact that they must pay for the rights to screen the films.

Calvary Baptist Church is currently looking for volunteers to help out with their production of the internationally performed evangelical drama “Heaven’s Gates, Hell’s Flames.” The church will be putting on the show on the evenings of Aug. 7, 8 and 9 at 6:30.

Reality Outreach Ministries Incorporated is an evangelical nonprofit that works with local churches to organize this and other dramas. They are the company working with Calvary to bring the show to Oxford for the second year in a row. The show was so popular the first time the church put it on, they were very quick to invite the company back this year.

When Calvary put on the show last year, Pastor Wesley Hughes said that the turnout was more than they had ever anticipated.

“It was such a great success,” he said. “There were churches that hadn’t had baptisms in six or seven years and then people who were attending this play, went back to their churches and rededicated or got saved. We have numerous letters of churches writing us to thank us.

There were people here from Holly Springs and all the way from Chicago and New York who just happened to be in town at the time. We were able to reach so many people.”

“Heaven’s Gates, Hell’s Flames” was produced for three nights last year at the church, with each night packing out the church designed to seat just under 500 people. Eventually they set up chairs in the aisles in order to provide more seating, but sometimes there was just nowhere to fit everyone.

They are hoping for that turnout again this year, and if the church continues to fill up night after night, the production could possibly even go for longer than three days.

Calvary needs community volunteers to help make sure every part of the production runs smoothly. Volunteers are not required to be mem-

They need everything from actors to stagehands to people helping to seat the large amount of people expected to show up to this year’s production.

“It takes an army to put this show on, and that’s why we open it to the community,” said Jennifer Hughes who is helping to oversee the production.

“Last year, our youngest daughter was actually in the program, and she’s 6.

So we have all the way from 6-year-olds participating to people in their 80s. We want to get as many people involved as we can so that they can see and learn from the play.”

The play is composed of a series of scenes that depict different modern-day scenarios of people losing their lives, most often while going about their everyday activities. These people are then immediately faced with where they will spend eternity.

gels and Satan with his demons also make appearances in the play to show their roles in the Christian belief of the afterlife. The play is meant to give viewers a very visual depiction of what happens when they do or do not choose to accept Jesus. There are sound effects and lights and costumes, all providing the experience of a professional performance with a Christian message.

Calvary’s Youth Minister Jeremy Abbott said that the amount of people who showed up to see the performance last year surprised him as well. But Abbott said that for him, the biggest thing was seeing so many young people in the community get involved with the production.

“It gives church members the opportunity to present the Gospel in a totally different way,” Abbott said. “It involved a lot of young people last year. I’d say that we had nine different scenes and, out of had seven those, teenagers that were able be involved. We got them

involved in another way of sharing the Gospel than just talking to people.”

Baptist Memorial Hospital garners EMS Gold Award FROM OXFORD CITIZEN REPORTS

Baptist Memorial HospitalNorth Mississippi continued to garner awards. The American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Award went to the hospital and those that serve through the Emergency Medical Services. The award is for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks.

According to Baptist, every year, more than 250,000 people experience a STEMI, or ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction, a type of heart attack caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it is critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication.

In both cases, time is crucial.

EMS services that receive the Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Award have demonstrated at least 75 percent compliance for three required achievement measures for two years and treated at least eight STEMI patients for each year.

“This is a great honor for our EMS team members and our emergency services,” said Bill Henning, CEO and administrator of Baptist North Mississippi.

“It’s a testament to the excellent, lifesaving care they provide patients in dire need of medical care.”

Mission: Lifeline seeks to save lives by closing the gaps that separate STEMI patients from timely access to appropriate treatments. Mission: Lifeline’s EMS recognition program celebrates emergency responders for their efforts in improving STEMI systems of care and improving the quality of life for these patients.

EMS providers are vital to the success of Mission: Lifeline.

EMS agencies provide access to 12-lead EKG machines (devices that measure the electrical activity of the heartbeat and can help medical personnel determine if a heart attack has occurred), and follow protocols derived from American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guidelines. The correct tools and training allow EMS providers to rapidly identify the STEMI, promptly notify the medical center, and trigger an early response from the awaiting hospital personnel.

“EMTs and paramedics play a vital part in the system of care for those who have heart attacks,” said Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association. “Since they often are the first medical point of contact, they can shave

precious minutes of life-saving treatment time by activating the emergency response system that alerts hospitals. We applaud Baptist North Mississippi for achieving this award that shows it meets evidence-based guidelines in the treatment of people who have severe heart attacks.”

Baptist North Mississippi is a 217-bed hospital that offers a variety of services, including cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, the Baptist Cancer Center and a 24-hour emergency room. Since the hospital became affiliated with Baptist Memorial Health Care in 1989, Baptist has invested more than $140 million into the facility.

the two were hired, and Sallis said losing a person with Levy's knowledge is a blow or void to deal with.

“We don't have the fires we used to have because of our fire codes and inspection and the building codes over the years have gotten better. So you lose some of that knowledge when you do have a fire,” Sallis said. “The people coming up aren't as experienced because we don't have fires. We used to have 10 to 15 fires in the '90s and now outside of a stove fire, we really only average two structure fires a year, so when you lose that knowledge, it is a blow to your department. You do have to get that knowledge sped back up. John loved his job, loved what he did and he was very good at what he did. If I needed him to do something, he was always there to do it. He loved serving his community and being a fire fighter.”

Levy still plans to work another “10 to 12 years.” He is currently employed at NAPA auto parts, and has been there since 1983, the summer he graduated from high school. In his spare time, Levy likes to hunt and fish. He and his wife also ride horses, and just got back from Missouri where they rode trails.

Levy has one grand child, Gracie, and she will keep him busy in the future.

Anonymous donor gives concert to YAC

The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council (YAC) has just received one its most unusual donations to date — a concert. An anonymous citizen of Oxford has donated the funds required to bring folk musician Sean Rowe to town to participate in a Small Hall concert.

The Small Hall Series is a joint venture between the YAC and the children’s summer program Horizons, with space donated

by Stephen McDavid’s law firm. The concerts are noted for their intimacy, with the space seating at most 80 people. Tickets for the event are priced at $5 a person with the proceeds going to benefit the YAC and Horizons, both of which are nonprofits. All of the concerts open at 7 p.m. with music starting at 7:30.

Small Hall concerts have only recently begun taking place in Oxford and are a throwback to the Music in

the Hall concerts that used to be organized in the city, but with a fundraising twist.

So far the concerts have been successful and managed to stay low-key while still raising money and getting people out to enjoy the arts. YAC director Wayne Andrews said that because the concerts begin at 7 and only go to 9 p.m., it gives members of the community who might not have the chance to go to later shows at other venues, whether it be because of small children or work obligations or whatever, an opportunity to listen to good music at an affordable price at a unique venue, all while supporting local nonprofits.

“They’re a lot of fun because it is a different type of concert,” Andrews said.

“You can sit down and listen to music and then you’ll have the opportunity to interact with the musician.

Then there’s the unique setting and the unique structure of it all. It's a really neat

performer, who usually hangs out after the show to speak with people.

Andrews said that it was really a vote of confidence that the anonymous donor was someone who regularly attended the concerts and loved the idea of it so much that he wanted to bring in one of his own favorite artists for an out-ofseason show. He said that it was really encouraging to see that this concert series was being appreciated by the community.

Rowe, the artist performing, is a folk singer and naturalist form upstate New York. The singer songwriter has been playing and writing music his whole life, but only in recent years has he begun recording albums.

ing about and participating in every step of the process from evidence collection and processing to a mock trial being held Friday in which they will seek a conviction of the suspect.

Each day begins with a lecture lasting nearly three hours where students learn about what they will be doing that afternoon. They learn about DNA and how it is processed and identified, evidence collection, the different kinds of lab testing, how to be an expert witness in a court of law and much more. Then, after they eat lunch, they spend their afternoons putting everything they learned to use in the labs of Coulter Hall.

He has been with Ole Miss since 1997 and loves getting the opportunity to work with kids at the camp.

“This is what I live for,” said Godfrey “We’re trying to impact young minds and teach them the proper ways to analyze data they’ve gath-

ered. We want to show them how science is related to what they do and that it is a very important component of forensics.”

The camp is funded in a large part by the AAFS with additional funds coming from the Ole Miss Chemistry Department. The university’s Division of Outreach handles the logistics of the program: where kids will sleep, what and when they will eat, background checks on staff, etc. It is the forensics department at the school that supplies all of the instruction, classroom space and supervision. For students who are living in the dorms during the camp, which is nearly all of them, the camp costs $550. However, the majority of the students are attending the camp on scholarships funded through the AAFS. This is the second year that University of Mississippi has been chosen to host the camp by the AAFS. Ole Miss is one of three universities in the country to be currently hosting the camp, the other two being the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The camp is open to middle schoolers through high school seniors, with a few exceptions for younger students who get into the program. Ole Miss’s program has over 40 students with about 80 percent of those students coming from different parts of the country. Stu-

dents came from Ohio, California, and others to attend the camp.

Rising high school senior Madison Booth came over 500 miles from Grandview, Missouri to attend the camp.

She said that she half expected to not enjoy her time at the camp, but has so far been pleasantly surprised with the faculty and the work she has been able to do.

“I think it’s pretty cool, actually,” Booth said. “I

thought I was gonna hate it, but I like forensic science. All of our camp advisors seem really cool. They have a lot of knowledge about this stuff and really seem to know what they’re talking about.”

Godfrey’s staff for the week include students that have recently graduated as well as current graduate students. They work directly with the kids by talking with them about and demonstrating the different lab

equipment and about what goes into the work they do.

Capt. Elijah Wilson of the Holly Springs Police Department also made an appearance Monday morning to discuss the role of police in the forensic process. Godfrey said that he wants this to be an important part of the takeaway the kids get, that there are so many people involved in catching the proverbial bad guy.

“What you see on ‘CSI’ isn’t real,” he said. “These kids get the opportunity to understand about what actually goes into solving a crime. In ‘CSI,’ they solve a crime in one hour and it’s one person doing everything from investigating the crime scene to analyzing the DNA to analyzing the blood and bullets and what have you.

City Board meeting hears JA’s annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ drive this weekend appeal, honors lifeguard

The Junior Auxiliary of Oxford will be hosting its annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive event benefitting children attending Oxford and Lafayette schools.

Today and Friday, there will drop offs at Office Depot, Walgreens, CVS, and Fred’s.

All locations will be taking collections on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Items needed include: backpacks (no wheels), wild ruled notebook paper, Number 2 pencils, pencil pouch, plastic three prong folder, plastic folders with pockets (no prongs), composition books, pencil top erasers, bar type erasers, binders (one inch, half inch, or two inch) spiral notebooks, five tab dividers, two pack expo markers, Crayola colored pencils, Elmer’s glue, 24

count crayons, glue sticks, student scissors, highlighters, 3 by 5 notecards (index cards) ten count pack of markers, quart size Ziploc bags, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, Kleenex, and napmats. Monetary donations and gift cards are accepted as well.

“Stuff the Bus started as a provisional project and the chapter decided to keep doing it each year because it was so successful," said Lauren Lauzon, a member of the Junior Auxiliary Oxford chapter. "We pack about 10 to 15 backpacks per school covering kindergarten through sixth grade in both Oxford and Lafayette Schools. If we have any leftover supplies, we box them and donate them to the higher grades. We also keep extra supplies for emergency cases throughout the school year (broken back-

Oxford's board of aldermen meeting Tuesday evening was extremely well attended, kicked off with a collapsing pew. The collapsed pew made quite a bit of noise at the start of the nearly two hour meeting. It caused one lady to fall, but no one was harmed. The damaged pew was immediately removed and Mayor Pat Patterson apologized profusely stating that the courtroom’s seating is very old and that the city has been considering replacing or renovating them.

Even before that, seating was so tight that many people were standing around the perimeter of the room, waiting to speak on or hear about a point on the agenda that they cared about.

One of those points was the honoring of Laurel Tollison. Tollison serves as a lifeguard at the Oxford City Pool and on June 29, she saved the life of a 4-yearold. The mayor recognized her on behalf of the city and thanked her for her work in keeping the children of the community safe. This was met with a standing ovation from the board and all those gathered in the room.

The mayor then went on to announce vacancies in several different city departments. Those include the Oxford Tourism Council, the Oxford Park Commission Board, the Historic Preservation Committee, the Courthouse Square Preservation Committee, the Historic Properties Commission Board, the Planning Commission and the Oxford Reserve and Trust Committee.

The next order of business was to declare that Aug. 13 through 20 be known as Oxford Charger Athletic Booster Week, in order to recognize the role the booster club plays in the school district.

There was then the third reading and a vote that would put in place an ordinance to rezone approximately 1.8 acres of land at

Rezoning would shift the land’s classification from “Multi-Unit Residential” to “Neighborhood Business,” thus allowing different businesses to operate on the land, specifically a “tavern” or liquor store. The board voted to pass the ordinance.

The next point of the agenda took up the majority of the meeting’s time. It was to appeal the board’s decision of denying the construction of new student housing known as UClub Townhomes that would be installed near the Price Hill Drive Community. Ward V Alderman Preston E. Taylor recused himself from the hearing due to a conflict of interest.

The board heard from several members of the community who were opposed to the project and two that said they understood the need of more housing, but had practical concerns about traffic, parking and privacy.

One of the community members that spoke against the construction of the townhomes was Emma George. George was speaking on behalf of the residents of the Price Hill subdivision. She had a list of concerns that she and her fellow community members had compiled in regards to the proposed construction of the U-Club Townhomes.

George said that primary

concern regarding the construction is the traffic. With the road leading to the Price Hill subdivision already busy, adding a new community to the area will dramatically increase the problem and make it difficult for everyone to move around. She went on to voice concerns about safety, privacy and noise resulting from the townhomes.

American Campus Communities is the company that is looking to build these houses. They are the largest company of their kind in the country, according to Chuck Carroll, a representative with the company who spoke at length at the meeting. Carroll said that he and his company have been working hard to get out into the community and meet with people who might have concerns about the project.

At oxfordms.net, under the agenda for this meeting, there is a link to a 222page document that outlines the intentions of the plan and includes the documents filed for the appeal on a previous ruling.

Dog paddling through the dog days

I

f you believe the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the “dog days of summer” run from July 3 to Aug. 11 coinciding with the rising of the Dog Star, Sirius.

Other sources expand the dog days from July 14 to Sept. 5. I’ll go with that second definition but either way, we’re in them. It is a summer-within-summer. It’s a month and half of soaring temps, low wind and the least rainfall of the year. It’s also the time of year when humans – like dogs – want to stick their heads in a bowl of water.

I don’t own a swimming pool, the closest I can come is mixing a gin and tonic in a large glass and getting my whistle wet. Satisfying, yes, but nothing like the fullbody immersion in cold water, stretching out, stroking and kicking. Not Summer Olympic swimming mind you, but more treading water with a destination. Not to insult dogs, but my leisurely stroke is more dog than paddle. I swim like Michael Phelps the night he got his DUI. The TV weather people like to talk about “heat index” or worse, “misery index.” They’ll also tell you, “It’s 99 degrees but “IT’S GONNA FEEL LIKE,” 150. Guess

Dickey's Barbecue offers variety, unique take to Oxford

Oxford has always held a special place in the heart of Ray Smith. The longtime Ole Miss fan appreciated his experiences in town, and when it came time to start a new business venture in his life, he wanted it to happen in Oxford.

Smith is the owner of Dickey's Barbecue Pit, which just opened in the Oxford Galleria shopping center in late June. Smith grew to appreciate the BBQ produced by the Dallas, Texas based company as he has worked in the gas and oil business the past 35 years.

“It was throughout my travels in Texas that I became very familiar with Dickey's Barbecue. I've watched their growth, tried their product at many different locations and I thought what they did, they did very well,” Smith said. “This last October, during this recent downturn in the oil industry, I thought it was time to explore other opportunities. The first question I asked them was there one in Oxford? Of course their answer was no and that's what led me to it. With Oxford being such a dynamic place, I thought it was a great location to start.”

Dickey's is located in the space that was leased by High Pointe Coffee, which was looking to just reside on the Square.

“I thought the location was great. It had a drive thru and it was obviously a coffee offer. Some Dickey's have drive thru offerings but I thought it would be better served if I could close that drive thru in and create at patio with an awning,” Smith said. “It would provide more seating and actual provide a little sizzle to the location with the awning in Ole Miss red. My landlord is a great guy and he approved we could do that and that kind of sealed the deal when he said I could turn that into patio seating. It all kind of worked out.”

“They are very in tune to their franchisee and their business model and what they are offering to the public,” Smith said. “I got to tell you, I refer to Barbecue University as Navy Seals Barbecue. I went from sun up to sun down, and then some, for 30 days. They really do a good job in getting you educated. By the time I got out of there, I had done everything in a Dickey's Barbecue. And I felt really confident going forward.”

For locals who don't much about know Dickey's, there are over 500 franchises located in

43 different states. Smith opened the 15th store in the state of Mississippi.

Dickey's is one of the fastest growing restaurant companies, and it's anything but fast food.

Smith, who resides in Hinds County near Raymond, has been in Oxford since the opening working with his managers. He said the response from Oxford residents has been very good so far.

“It's been well received and I've met so many nice people. I can't say enough about the folks in Oxford,” Smith said. “We wanted to get up on rails before the students got back in town, and football season. It was the plan to open in June. I know the latter part of June and a good bit of July is usually the least traffic, but again, that was a good period for me to get my

folks trained and be able to perform at the high level we want to do it.”

The restaurant has already garnered a good share of regular customers, Smith said. And he was looking forward to the students returning, and forward to a fantastic football season.

There are a number of items to order on the menu. In Texas, beef brisket is the top seller. In the Deep South, Smith said it was all about the pig, and that pulled pork and ribs were the top choices in places like Oxford.

“Beef brisket is the main seller out in Texas. In Texas at Dickey's Barbecue, you will sell 70 percent and 30 percent pulled pork and you can turn that stat right around when you get into Mississippi and Alabama,”

Smith said. “What has been interesting is turning people on to that brisket.

And done right, the way we do it, low and slow and overnight, 12 to 14 hours in that pit, it's just the bomb. People have really raved about it. My comment to my crew is if we can make the BBQ spot on, it will make up for the little mistakes we make getting trained up and ready to go. You make sure that the product is the quality you want to sit down to. That will go a long way should we have a problem with our ice machine or if there is something that's amiss, that will make up for it.”

The other thing that caught Smith's attention about Dickey's was the way they operate from a dining experience. Even though the restaurant op-

erates under the “fast casual” title, Smith said it's not fast food.

“The other thing that makes it so interesting is even though Dickey's is the fast growing barbecue chain in the U.S., it's not chain barbecue,” he said.

“Each location smokes its own meat and burns it's own hickory wood. All that wood is locally procured and that provides a small variance. Each site is really turning out it's own exclusive product.”

Ribs, sides such as fried okra and macaroni and cheese, potato salad and baked beans can accompany a meal. Catering is available for customers who need ribs or pork for a party or family gathering.

Cara-Anne Sallis is a true leader for LHS volleyball

E

ven when practice wasn't possible, or necessary, Cara-Anne Sallis was ready to do her part for the Lafayette Lady Commodores. The sport of volleyball is very important to Sallis, and so are her teammates. She is one of three seniors on the 2016 team, and one of the players coach Clint Jordan is counting on to lead the group. How good the Lady Commodores ultimately are remains to be seen, but their chances increase with Sallis on the floor.

“I think we're so much better as a team.

We're so much closer,” said Sallis when asked about the 2016 edition. “Last year, the seniors weren't really close with the underclassmen where as this year, some of our closest friends are the underclassmen.

I think we have a really, really great team bond. I think that team bond is going to make us go a long way.”

Support is the most important thing that the Lady Commodores can do for each other. Jordan stressed a team-first approach as well as being a key to success.

“We need to talk to each other and tell each other that everything is OK and they need to shake it off instead of telling them that they need to do this,” Sallis said. “We have people with really happy personalities on the team, and it's going to be easy to do stuff like that.”

As an outside hitter, Sallis' biggest contribution in the stat department will be kills. The biggest thing the team can do to earn wins, she believes, is to serve, and receive serves from teams. In a nutshell, the Lady Commodores want matches to last a long time.

“We're not going to be as much of a hitting team this year. We need to pass and we're the best at rallies. We can play a long time. We don't tire out but the other team does,” said Sallis, who also plays tennis for Lafayette.

The reason volleyball is a bigger favorite sport for Sallis revolves around teammates.

Even though she has a partner in tennis, there are more that depend on her in volleyball.

When the 2016 Olympics begin on Aug. 5, there will be seven Ole Miss athletes set to compete in the games. The vast majority of the athletes that are headed to Brazil are track athletes. Raven Saunders is the current Ole Miss athlete who is set to compete in the Olympics. The sophomore shot putter punctuated a fantastic season, that included two NCAA championships, by throwing the second-best mark of her career in the Olympic trials.

Saunders, who is expected to be the youngest shot putter in the Olympics, will be joined in Rio by her head coach at Ole Miss, Connie Price-Smith, who is the head coach of Team USA. Gwen Berry, who is a volunteer assistant coach at Ole Miss, is also set to compete in her first Olympics in the hammer throw.

Price-Smith competed in four Olympics during her career as an athlete, and since 1988, Smith has been at every single Olympic games with the exception of 2004.

“It's exciting time for me as the head coach of the U.S. Olympic team and to be the head coach of athletes who are actually going to the Olympics with me,” PriceSmith said. “Ole Miss has seven athletes, both present and future, that are traveling down to Rio and I'm really excited to be a part of it.

Going into the end of the season and the trials, for me, in my opinion, both (Saunders, Berry) were expected to be traveling down there with me.”

Saunders set every school record she could in her first season in Oxford. She started her career at Southern Illinois, and followed PriceSmith to Ole Miss. Berry also competed at Southern Illinois where she was a three-

time All-American.

Price-Smith said Saunders has “grown up a little bit” since she arrived at Ole Miss.

“She will say that she's not just a kid anymore. Her technique keeps getting better and better and her strength gets better and better and she is more familiar with her turning in the circle and where she's at,” Price-Smith said. “She has always had a great determenation, and that really hasn't changed at all.”

Ever since Saunders started to work out at Ole Miss last September, her goal has been making Team USA. Both Price-Smith and Berry, who helps instruct Saunders, both remember her talking about the Olympics.

“She worked really hard. I don't know what her ceiling is, but she just kept getting better and better every time out,” Price-Smith said. “She is young and fortunately for throwers, we have longevity

in the sport and we can go for a really long time. I think she has a bright future ahead.”

Saunders said she doesn't really feel any different about being on the team now. Part of that is because she doesn't want it to change her work ethic.

“It may push me a little harder to see if I can be the best in what is the biggest competition of the next four years and really rank myself,” Saunders said adding she was shocked at first when she realized her goal had become a reality. “I was sitting in first and the throwers kept going by and going by and even on the last throw when Michelle (Carter) won, I started to cry because I noticed I was an Olympian. Not many people can say that. To finally see all of my work had paid off in that one split, it brought me to tears.”

“Maybe when we get down there we'll plan a few things, but for me, it's all about getting some personal records,” Saunders said.

By the time Tyson Summers brings his Georgia Southern Eagles to Oxford to play the Ole Miss Rebels, he likely won’t feel as much like a first year head coach as in the home opener with Savannah State. Summers was hired away from his role as defensive coordinator at Colorado State to replace Willie Fritz.

The Eagles went 9-4 in 2015 under Fritz. They event put a scare into the Georgia last season, losing 23-17 at Sanford Stadium.

Georgia Southern played in the GoDaddy Bowl last season, beating Bowling Green 58-27. Quarterback Upshaw was Favian tremendous for the Eagles in the game, accounting for four touchdowns and 199 yards on the ground. Upshaw was named the MVP of the Go Daddy Bowl, and the redshirt senior from Titusville, Florida has all the talent to put pressure on the Rebels’ defense. The Eagles have another dualthreat signal caller on the roster, who split time with Upshaw during spring drills. Kevin Ellison, also a redshirt senior, is even more decorated than Upshaw.

He was named to the AllSun Belt second team in 2014 and he saw action in 11 games last season, rushing for 712 yards and eight touchdowns in Frtiz’s runheavy style. By the time the Eagles play Ole Miss on

Then again, it’s possible that both continue to split time, or play on the field at the same time to utilize their athletic ability. Another offensive weapon back for the Eagles in 2016 is senior running back Matt Breida, who led the team with 1,608 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was named to the Doak Walker Award watch list this summer.

Georgia Southern averaged 363 yards per game on the ground last season. Ellison and Upshaw both combined to throw 137 passes, completing 59 for 824 yards and four touchdowns.

Georgia Southern’s defense allowed 23.5 points per game last season. Ironhead Gallon is the top returner for the Eagles’ defense. He made 81 tackles in 2015. In the spring game, he intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. Redshirt senior Jamal Johnson, who 39 stops in 2015, also had a productive spring game.

Ryan George, a redshirt junior, and senior Bernard Dawson are two of the lead-

ers on the defensive line.

Kicker Younghoe Koo is a senior who made seven of his nine field goal attempts last year. Junior Matt Flynn is the only punter listed on the roster for the Eagles.

Coming out of the spring, it appeared that the players had to take a more active role with each other from a leadership standpoint.

“The thing that I’d like to see a better job of is our leadership. I thought we lacked that and have a ways to go with that – when something poor happened, us not being able to stand up and rally the troops and being able to make something happen off of it,” Summers said following the game in a release from Georgia Southern.

Ole Miss and the Eagles have never met on the field.

Besides Savannah State in the opener, the Eagles travel to South Alabama in Week 2 and then go to Western Michigan and Arkansas State in Week 4 and 5. Georgia Southern is actually on the road all but one week in the month of October.

Team-first approach key for Lafayette Lady Commodores

Lafayette volleyball will have to rely on each other in 2016 more than they did a season ago. A team-first approach is being stressed by head coach Clint Jordan. In a season where the levels of experience and talent are less compared to the prior season, Jordan is still upbeat about what the Lady Commodores can do on the court.

“We may lack experience in varsity matches, but our team chemistry is as good as any team I've had already,” Jordan said. “I feel like our seniors are leaders who aren't forceful but are very much a good example. They are very sportsmanlike and the good thing about this group is there aren't any egos. They just want to win. I think that says a lot about this group that doesn't have high expectations as far as what outside people think.

Graduating what we did last year, there are some who think we won't be as good. I feel a little differently. I think those girls set a tone of winning and these girls are kind of picking up that torch.”

When any team, in any sport, starts practices leading up to a season opener, feelings are usually confident and upbeat. Jordan seemed confident that if the team bonded right, and if the unit can serve and receive like he thinks they can, then a division title is realistic.

“I think we can make a little push in the playoffs,” Jordan added. “I think we will be completely different. Last year, we could move around and play fast and control tempo going fast. This group is going to have to do it the opposite way. We're going to have to control tempo, but it's going to have to be slower. Everything is going to have to be about hitting over blocks. If we can make a team hit over blocks, we have a real shot because we're strong passers and we're quick in the back end.

And we're really, really good blockers. Our success is going to hinge on the fact that we can slow it down a little bit and force you into a game where you can only hit

She is one of the three senior leaders.

“She makes every play she can get to,” Jordan said.

“Cara-Anne (Sallis) is more of our vocal leader. Now, she's yelling and screaming, but she is very encouraging.

Because of how easy she is, she is easy to follow. And she is one of the smartest players I've coached and I've had some smart ones. I'm very appreciative of her commitment to being a teammate.

And then Orianna (Shaw), this isn't her natural sport, but she went to play in the All-Star game. When they get out on the court to start and hit, they're going to see why she's there. She's an incredible blocker and the thing about Orianna is she is still getting better. This summer she showed such improvement on her swing. I'm excited to see her become a scorer this year.”

There were times last season that Lafayette defeated teams 25-15, and some were over good teams. Jordan didn't see this year's team being able to run away with a game, but he also didn't see his Lady Commodores al-

lowing another team to run away from them.

“We're going to be able to keep you from scoring in bunches. We're going to have a hard time scoring in bunches,” Jordan said. “That determination and cohesiveness I've already seen us having, I'm excited about. I know how these things can manifest and I really hope I can foster it in the right direction and we can be that kind of team.”

Lafayette opens the season Aug. 9. In between now and then, the biggest thing for Jordan to focus on were fundamentals.

“It's hard as a coach to sacrifice any wins. I don't mean that we're going to lose our first few games, but we're going to focus on fundamentals and group work. It would be a lot like working offensive line and quarterback separately quite a bit and then putting them together,” Jordan said. “The first few weeks, we will mainly be in groupings, back row, front row, back, middle, outside, setters. Next Step Oxford's Elliott headed to run at Mississippi College

There was a time, not too long ago, when Swayze Elliott didn't think her fantastic running career would extend past her final year at Oxford High. In her head, the plan was to attend Ole Miss, an appropriate choice considering her family ties and proximity.

Things changed for Elliott as she continued to study the book of Matthew in the Bible. Not knowing why she kept highlighting the word “go” it eventually occurred to Elliott that God was speaking to her, inspiring her to take the next step in her career. Her insight was also followed up by an e-mail from Mississippi College assistant track and cross country coach Matthew Reneker.

“It said they were interested in me running for our school. He had been talking with (former OHS standout) Emily (Hankins) and knew that we knew each other and said he would love it I came and checked it out sometime,” Elliott said. “I was doing summer track and I was actually going to a meet in Pearl in two weeks so we set it up to where I could go visit.

Emily had been orientation leader and so I went out to lunch with her and then I met with admissions and everyone I came in contact, I just loved. They were so real and so welcoming and Coach Reneker is just an energetic person. He really cares about the well being of his athletes. He majored in physiology and I'm interested in physical therapy, so I think he's going to help me athletically, socially and academically.”

Elliott was very excited to continue her career running for the Choctaws, adding that “it felt like where I belonged.”

“I did decide to take a few weeks to make sure I wasn't in the honeymoon phase. I knew it was a great opportunity, but I wanted to make sure that this is where I should go,” Elliott said. “I kept thinking and

Even with a massive amount of change in a week, the decision for Elliott proved to be stress free. She hasn't looked back on the choice.

“It only motivated me honestly. I had a negative mindset to cross country. I didn't run last year but then I talked with the coach at MC and he reminded me that cross country only improves your 800 in track,” said Elliott, who will do both track and cross country at MC. “He was just encouraging me so after that, I just realized that cross

country is where it all began. So I was excited and our team has a really good feeling about how strong we can be. We've got great runners coming up, Sarah Perry, Lillie Grace Mitchell and Patricia Hughes. We're all going to push each other. I'm just here to work as hard as I can and be as good as I can. I'm trying to keep a positive mind and give it my all.”

Over the course of her career, which varsity started in seventh grade, Elliott has won a number of medals, and been a part of state-championship teams.

She has competed in the state meets at both cross country and track and

looking to finish her career strong in both this coming school year.

Elliott is healthy again, and hasn't experienced any setbacks from being in a walking boot or from her breathing that sidelined her last year.

“I feel really good about the year. Coach (Chris) Patton is really pushing us and doing it in a smart manner,” Elliott said. “When I couldn't run, when that was taken away from me, I didn't know what to do. I was really frustrated. It was another God thing there. I heard him tell that I was getting caught up in making plans for myself, that I had taken the gift for

granted. I know he is the one who gives me the ability to do this. When I found peace with that, I felt a weight lift off my shoulder.

I knew that it made me stronger. I actually think it was good for me to take a break and let my body completely heal.”

Patton is just so happy that Elliott is back on the course. He added that he felt Mississippi College was a “perfect fit” for Elliott.

“It's a great school, great program. Coach Ard is a great coach and he was at Tupelo for years when I was in high school,” Patton said. “It's the same course she has run on since she was in the seventh grade.

She is very familiar with the program with Emily Hankins being down there who told her about some things.

It's close to home. She can always come back up here and train. I'm excited for her, to take that next chapter in her life.”

Patton felt like Elliott would be back to her old form after missing last cross country season.

“It's her senior year and I'm looking forward to big things. She never gave up, stayed positive and kept working her butt off,” Patton said. “Big things are going to happen for her.” john.davis@journalinc.com Twitter: @oxfordcitizenjd

High Expectations Lady Chargers have talent, depth to reach state tourney

One of the most experienced volleyball teams in North Mississippi resides at Oxford High. A year after advancing to the MHSAA playoffs last season, the Lady Chargers want to take another couple of steps as a program. Tara Ross is entering her 10th season as head coach and the biggest thing she can say about her team is competitive at every single starting spot.

“There is one or two people, three and four people in some positions, fighting for that starting position,” Ross said. “This is really the first year that every single week you're going to have to work for your position.

We feel like we should be in Jackson. That is our ultimate goal, to be there at the end of October. We expect to be there for sure.”

One of the returners, senior Maggee Hobson, hasn't been able to get on the court this summer. Her

first day back was Monday, and she was excited to rejoin the action. Hobson was at the Ole Miss camp, watching her teammates, and she thought the team looked good.

“Before we haven't had players who have been able to fill in to where if I'm hurt, we have someone come in and make it work,” Hobson said. “It's the same thing if Reagan and Jordan (Freeze) are out, we have people that can fill in. It's not been like that in the past. If one person was gone, we're done. This is our year, I feel it. I can't go out of volleyball season without a ring.

I'm not going to let it happen.”

Hobson got a taste of playing in a state championship tournament as a member of the OHS basketball team last winter.

“We have at it all. We have all the tools, we just have to make sure to put it together,” Ross said. “We're in a great place. It's a matter of us putting it all together and taking care of business. This is the year, we have it, it's all about making it work. We expect more from ourselves.”

Last week, the Lady Chargers took part in Ole Miss team camp. The freshmen team got some small group one-on-one time at the high school. Ross saw her players really pushing each other, in a good way, and coming together.

“There are some ups and downs here and there, I thought they played well.

They looked good for it to be mid July,” Ross said.

Free to Hit ‘The Barber’ wants to cut up teams for OHS

More free was the way DT Thompson described how he felt coming into his senior season with the Oxford Chargers. Thompson is playing inside the box at linebacker in the Chargers' new 3-4 look this fall. A season after racking up over 80 tackles, Thompson wants more. And he has the freedom to make even bigger plays in a scheme that fits his overall abilities better.

“The defense is going to wild,” Thompson said with a smile. “We're going to be fast. With the spread, and offenses running side to side, a guy like DQ (Thomas) coming in at linebacker is going to help a lot.”

Like Thomas, Thompson has beefed up and is now at 205 pounds. He feels faster and in good shape.

Thompson also added that he is more mature as a player.

“I feel like that the past seniors, they set a good example for us. The year before that, too,” Thompson said. “I feel like we all need to step up, not just a senior.

It could be a freshman to step up and teach a senior.”

Past seniors like Jack Abraham and DK Metcalf brought more exposure to the Chargers, and they played at such a high level, it rubbed off on the younger guys Thompson said.

The goal for tackles is somewhere over 100. The transition from defensive back to linebacker was something Thompson had to get used to in 2015. Now, it's all about bringing it in the middle of this new scheme. His best game last season came in the first round of the playoffs

“Me and Jack Turner just dominated their line.

(Turner) was a smaller linebacker, but he brought that

hitting power and I watched and learned a lot from him, too,” Thompson said. “I'm excited for this year. I think we can be

good this year. If we do everything we're supposed to do in the weight room, and outside the weight room, I think we're good.”

The workouts this summer have been deemed tougher than in the past, and Thompson said they have been crucial in relation to getting ready for the season.

“It's all a mind thing. We have to push each other,” Thompson said.

When he's not wrapping up tacklers, Thompson cuts grass, and the hair of his teammates. He cuts at his house, and also makes house calls for his teammates.

“It's $10 per cut,” said Thompson, who is also known as The Barber. “I've cut DK Metcalf's hair, Hiram (Wadlington), Quinten Wilfawn. I've cut a little of everybody.”

Cutcliffe said no one on the team will ever outwork Thompson.

“He's make himself better, every year,” Cutcliffe said. “He comes to work every single day. He does extra. His work ethic is off the charts. He's going to play in the box this year and I think he's more comfortable there. He's able to play downhill. I think you're going to see increased production from him on the field. He's a leader and he has the respect of everyone on the team. He's just a guy that does everything right.”

Cutcliffe added that Thompson not only had a great spring, but he's also had a great summer. That includes 7-on-7 work and the most recent work completed at team camp.
