Carter brings arena-style to Red Raiders BY GENE PHELPS DAILY JOURNAL
RED RAIDERS FAST FACTS
Division: 1-4A 2011 record: 5-6, 3-2 division (Lost 1st round of state playoffs) Coach: Darryl Carter (1st year)
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Devan Gilleylen, Sr., QB/LB Will start on defense and could see duty at QB along with Jon Pugh. Nick Clark, Sr., TE The 6-4, 240-pounder is a surehanded target. Nick Gill, Jr., NG At 6-3, 325, expected to be a force in the team’s 3-3-5 defensive lineup.
Shannon first-year head coach Darryl Carter hopes his wide-open offensive style produces enough points to post plenty of victories this season. Carter, who returned to Lee County following a successful three-year run at Kemper County, promises a point-producing, uptempo, arena ball-style attack. “We’re a spread team that will run the ball,” he said. “We want to be uptempo like Oregon. You’ll see a lot of arena stuff.” Carter knows plenty about the 50-yard indoor game, having played quarterback and wide receiver for Tupelo’s arena entries – the FireAnts and Mudcats.
Returning starter Jon Pugh and linebacker Devan Gilleylen entered the fall battling at quarterback. “It’s good to have two quarterbacks you can rely on,” Carter said. “Both are tough kids. I’d like to find one guy. I’ve been up front with them.”

Gilleylen is also the Red Raiders’ top returning linebacker, which means he could be splitting duties on both sides of the ball. Sophomore Deiamonte Pounds opened some eyes in the spring with his play at running back. Chavis Dilworth, a 4.4 40 guy, returns at receiver. Quavay Kolheim and Jalen Thomas return at wide receiver while 6-foot-4 tight end Nick Clark is back. Up front, guard Derriaus Conway and tackles Steven Metcalf and Isaiah Wren return. Conway started at center last season.
Shannon worked out of a 3-3-5 alignment in the spring and plans to stick with it. “We’re not big and we’re not small,” Carter said. “We’re going to fly around out of that.” Nose guard Nick Gill, who sat out last season with a knee injury (ACL), was a standout performer in the spring. The 325-pounder will be flanked by tackles Brenan Cayson, Kentavius Smith and Clark. Zack Finnie, Cedric Nabors and Thomas Walton join Gilleylen at line-
