Minister, PS visit Vodafone

Saturday, 18 May 2013, 10:28

Minister for the Economy, Investment and Small Business, Chris Cardona, together with Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness and Economic Growth, Edward Zammit Lewis, this morning Visited Vodafone’s Head Office at Sky Parks Business Centre, where they were greeted by the CEO Balesh Sharma. Dr Cardona praised Vodafone’s continuous investment in the Maltese economy with new premises at Sky Parks and the investment in its network to provide high standard service both for Voice and Internet. “Consumers are more and more intent on using their mobile to call, surf, shop and use other services such as banking. It is clear that mobile will be the future gateway between the consumer and businesses. There is an increasing demand for mobile internet services, a service which Vodafone have been offering for quite some time and continuously investing in to provide high speeds to its customers. These initiatives put Malta in the forefront when it comes to mobile services, high quality voice services and high speed internet,” Dr Cardona said. Dr Zammit Lewis said that, “Undoubtedly, the mobile phone is the device that is most indicative of the wireless revolution, a lifestyle altering technology that is representative of one of the most explosive developments in telecommunications. Malta is no exception. The history

of mobile telephony in Malta goes back some 23 years when the first mobile services were launched by Vodafone (Malta), known back then as Telecell. At the time, services were limited to purely voice technology with prices affordable only to the elite few.” Vodafone together with other private companies have an important role in reducing the digital divide and increasing digital literacy explained the Junior Minister. “Since then, we have witnessed developments unimaginable at the time. Today there are more subscriptions than the actual population, meaning that some individuals have more than one connection. The proliferation of smart phones has brought a new meaning to ‘connected anytime anyplace!’ Mobile data is a convenient reality, with individuals regularly using email, browsing the net or accessing social networks whilst on the move. 3 nationwide 3G networks ensure a plethora of products and services with different bundle and commercial offers to suit every individual’s needs,” concluded Dr Zammit Lewis. Vodafone’s CEO, Balesh Sharma said that “Being a global company Vodafone fully understand the need to internationalise local companies so that they will be able to tap into the global market. That’s why we welcome your statement that the Government will be assisting local businesses to think ‘globally’. I believe that this is the way forward for Malta’s economy and well-being. As a company we are looking forward to working closely with the government to implement a strategy that will reduce the digital divide that exists.”

Melita Business supports Malta eBusiness seminar Article By: di-ve.com news Melita recently supported the Malta eBusiness seminar organised by CSB Group in collaboration with the Malta Institute of Management. The aim of the seminar, entitled “Ecommerce – The way forward, Opportunities and Implications”, was to explore the benefits and challenges of ebusiness. Businesses of all sizes in all sectors are using the Internet in many different ways - to work with partners and suppliers, for procurement, for internal activities and much more. Addressing the seminar on behalf of Melita Business, Corporate Services Manager Antoine Sciberras commented that a good starting point for those seeking to move their business online is to understand that an online business runs on principles very similar to the traditional bricks-and-mortar retail business. During his presentation, Mr Sciberras explained the audience the basic steps that a business goes through when moving or expanding to the online world. He stressed the importance of ensuring that business owners should not look only at the aesthetics but also the infrastructure used to ensure that customers can access information quickly and in a safe way. “When taking your business online it is important to choose a hosting provider – which would be referred to as a data centre, or co-location service, that ideally stands as close to your client base as possible. If you’re operating in Malta, your clients will have a better experience if the website is hosted locally. The provider you choose should also be robust and large enough to handle your traffic – online visitors don’t have the patience to wait for minutes until your page loads. Everything needs to happen in less than seconds,” he stated. Melita has a dedicated business support team catering for businesses, ranging from self-employed to large international organisations. Venera Bank of Valletta has been privileged to host some of Malta’s leading artists over the past 13 years. Each of these artistic genres is brought to life by his unique approach, where his emotion and passion perfectly complement technical calculation,” Mr Cassar White continued. As in all the past editions, this exhibition is being accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, including a biographical synopsis and reproductions in colour of all the exhibits on display.
